I visited the Visiting Artists Gallery first, where I got to have a nice conversation with one of…read morethe artists. This gallery is located in a basement space which is a little sad compared to the main gallery. Then I moved onto the main gallery. The gallery is divided in different style with Asian furniture on one side and more modern art on the other. I really enjoyed the Susan Freda collection of copper dresses and illustrations. There is also a selection of jewelry, shoes, and photography. Unlike the visiting gallery, the staff here were pretty aloof even with a customer that was looking to buy. Like most art galleries, the prices are in the range of something I could never afford, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy walking around and appreciating the art.

While in Mystic, my friend and I stopped by the Trade Winds Gallery. This is a very small store…read morewhere they sell artwork, antique maps and frames. This really isn't a gallery, the art peices are randomly placed all over the store. Some are a bit difficult to get a full view of because others are blocking it. My friend found an original 1917 map of West Hartford, the same area where his company's office is located. This was a large map at approximately 30 by 40 inches. It was in excellent shape. Despite it's age, nothing had been fading, all of the words were still legible. It came with a protective cover, covering each edge and corner, the front and back. It was $250. My friend is very happy with his new art piece. He talked to Brian the owner of Trade Winds Gallery for a while. He was very personable and knowledgeable about the maps and the artwork in his store. It isn't just ordinary paint on canvas and stock photography, this place has painted seashells, handmade jewelry...it's something you absolutely must see. Normally, I don't get all gushy over an art store, because they don't strike a chord with me, but this place really did. The proprietress, Ellen, is really sweet and takes the time to find a piece of art that fits you and your budget. There are some fantastic seascapes, pictures of lighthouses and some stellar photography here. You need to check it out. Call the gallery though, because there are not specifically posted hours.

I recently checked out this event at the Newport Art Museum with a few of my girlfriends and we had…read moresuch a fun night. It was the perfect excuse to get dressed up and try something new, with a twist of course... delicious cocktails. The Edgar Allan Poe experience itself was really well done. The actors were fantastic and fully committed to their roles. I loved the costumes and the dramatic personalities. It made the whole evening feel immersive without being over the top. I'm actually at the museum about once a month for meetings, so it was fun to see the space used in a completely different way. My only wish is that we had a little more time to wander and take in the current exhibits, because it's such a beautiful setting. My one real downside is parking. With the recent changes, it has become pretty difficult to find a spot that is easy to get in and out of, especially during a New England winter. Definitely something to plan ahead for. Overall, such a unique and memorable night. I would absolutely recommend grabbing your friends and checking this out if it comes back around.

Its a little wonkey in that you have to go outside through a courtyard to get to the 2nd part of the musuem, which I would imagine is a major inconvenience during colder or inclement weather. No staff or docents other than the person at the front desk. A goodbye quick time.

I have to compliment the people who curate/run the gallery for their bold approach to art in an area that is so damn conservative in approach. They got some balls, fer sure. This is better than most of what you'll find in Providence, and would fit in well in any hip, urban art area. The fact that it's in a beach community dominated by tourist schlock is amazing. And I didn't find the prices high at all - some of the work would easily be triple the price in Boston or NYC, so show some love to this place and the talented roster they've assembled. I am definitely a fan!

I had been here years before when some friends had showings here, but now its a bright, clean, professional studio! A great crowd, with an awesome DJ spinning old skool hip hop. Who doesnt love a little OPP while checkin' out some dope art!? The front is like a little gift shop, with books, t-shirts, wallets, etc. Being that it was the opening for this show, there was wine and ice cold PBRs ready for our consumption. I love me some art, dont get me wrong, but daaaaaamn, this stuff was pricey. We are Narragansett people, not NYC. Just sayin'. Over all, I was pumped to see so many young people out and about and being part of something that other people worked really hard for. Its nice to see that there's a solid art community down here that doesnt consist of just pictures of lighthouses (no offense to you lighthouse photogs!).

The art inside is something you may never see again. You must stop if you are in Newport. The hours were confusing to me, so give a call or look at their web site to see when they are open. The art, all of it, on display is wonderful. Each piece is set perfectly, the lighting perfect and the story behind each piece is fascinating. If you are a Rockwell fan at all, you have to go here. You may think you know Rockwell's but I saw illustrations I had no idea existed, from the cute to the serious to the beauty of telling of a time in US history. The John Rogers sculptures are really something to see. This was my first time noticing his work and I just stood there in awe. Enjoy.

This is an art gallery pure and simple and is located in one of the more modest Newport "cottages"…read moreon Bellevue Ave. It just happens to feature art by "commercial" artists--specifically by Norman Rockwell, his predecessors, his protégés, and his contemporaries. You will not find any works that make you wonder about meaning or whether you are being kidded. No abstraction, no bold geometric designs, no blobs of paint, no pure blacks or reds. You are never in doubt about whether these artists possess real talent. These are all artists who made good money while they were alive! I liked it a lot and I'm glad we just happened upon it. In addition to finding a couple of dozen works by Rockwell, you will see landscapes, beautiful women, handsome men, a few portraits, some excellent caricatures, and a lot of art that became the covers of books and magazines. The gift shop has some impressive quality copies of the art that you can take home for a price. The only negatives I should mention is that no photography is allowed (copyright issues) and sometimes it is hard to read the captions in the darkened rooms. Treat yourself to a different genre of high quality art--this is worth a one to two hour visit.
