A taste of the…read morepast Scrimshaw is the art of carving on bones, teeth, baleen and tusks of animals. It really developed in the early 19th century on whaling ships in the Pacific Ocean and helped the sailors pass away the long hours in distant lands. Most of it was never signed and has been called the only original American art form. A Scrimshander is a person who makes scrimshaw and that's the name of this unique store. They have some of the most exquisite scrimshaw imaginable, using ancient walrus and mammoth tusks and various elephant and certain sperm whale teeth. The Marine Mammal Protection Act forbids any whale teeth harvested after 1973 to be used but the items made before this time can be sold and worked on. Scrimshanders meticulously keeps track of every item they sell and will give you a detailed history of it's source. They also have polymer reproductions and will do extremely fine restoration work on existing scrimshaw. Besides scrimshaw the store also have a fine selection of Nantucket Baskets. The baskets are finely weaved, decorative items that were first crafted by men struck on the stationary lightships to help keep from going absolutely bonkers. Some of the baskets are so delicate they look like they can be crushed in your hands and come in all different sizes. Lots of amber jewelery, frames, greeting cards, lighthouse models, Xmas ornaments and fantastic sculptured models and drawings of beautiful sea birds are displayed and just about any type of nautical artwork is available. This is a great store for anyone interesting in art, history or nautical crafts. If you want something unique, historic and at the same time absolutely beautiful this store is worth checking out. Just make sure you bring a fat wallet because fine art like this doesn't come cheaply.

I've never bought a single piece of artwork in my life…read more Call me a boor, but I suppose I just never saw the point. But today, I am a proud owner of a small and humble piece of art. And for that, I have to thank Alexander "Sandy" Nesbitt. Nesbitt is a self-made photography entrepreneur working out of a small studio in Newport, Rhode Island. When you walk into his studio, you see the usual things you'd expect to see in a photography gallery: framed pictures hanging on the wall, canvas prints of boats in still water, collages. But as you delve deeper, it's hard to tell where the gallery ends and where the "lab" begins. He's been all over the world in his decades long photography career, but he's a Newport native and so he's transitioned into doing a lot more local work. I had the pleasure of chatting with him for a good hour and a half before I made my purchase. I really didn't think I would buy something, but at some point in the middle of our conversation, I knew I was going to walk out of there with something--I just didn't know what. In any case, he definitely made my experience worthwhile and I recommend that anyone in the Newport area pay him a visit.

My fiancée found a print that she loved but unfortunately they were out of it in the size she was looking for. Gigi (sp?) from the gallery told us that the owner, Alexander "Sandy" Nesbitt, was out at the Newport Folk Festival with many other pieces and that we should check back after the Festival to see if our piece was among those he took with him. We came back the next day, and a different woman (apologies for forgetting your name) kindly looked up our piece in the inventory and told us there was one left at 89 Thames Street (Sandy's main gallery). She was able to have us purchase it at Blink and have it put aside at the other studio. When we got to the studio the piece was nicely wrapped waiting for us, and we were able to have a great chat with Sandy about his art, the festival, and much more.

Recently attended the "Afternoon with Three Rhode Island Poets". There were two poet laureates,Tom…read moreChandler and Lisa Starr as well as the current RI state poet Rick Benjamin. Poet Jay Primiano, opened the event. This is a terrific space with art work and great light, small enough for a poetry reading and large enough for art, or film. The readings themselves were wonderful and there were light refreshments. Glad to discover this new adddition to the arts scene in RI!
