This is better than most of what you'll find in Providence, and would fit in well in any hip, urban art area. The fact that it's in a beach community dominated by tourist schlock is amazing. And I didn't find the prices high at all - some of the work would easily be triple the price in Boston or NYC, so show some love to this place and the talented roster they've assembled. I had been here years before when some friends had showings here, but now its a bright, clean, professional studio! A great crowd, with an awesome DJ spinning old skool hip hop. Who doesnt love a little OPP while checkin' out some dope art!? The front is like a little gift shop, with books, t-shirts, wallets, etc. Being that it was the opening for this show, there was wine and ice cold PBRs ready for our consumption. I love me some art, dont get me wrong, but daaaaaamn, this stuff was pricey. We are Narragansett people, not NYC. Just sayin'. Over all, I was pumped to see so many young people out and about and being part of something that other people worked really hard for. Its nice to see that there's a solid art community down here that doesnt consist of just pictures of lighthouses (no offense to you lighthouse photogs!).

Poet Jay Primiano, opened the event. This is a terrific space with art work and great light, small enough for a poetry reading and large enough for art, or film. The flowers are beautiful and so are the topiaries. It doesn't take you long to walk through, especially if you're like me and by yourself, but definitely worth the trip outside of downtown Newport to visit.

As for the place itself, its ok. Nothing special, and probably not worth the price, but to get outside and to do something different for 45 minutes or so it does its job. Unfortunately the experience with staff soured the experience.

Courthouse Center for the Arts is an amazing venue for live music, art and entertainment…read more They have a bar on site (but no food, just snacks) and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. The list of bands playing there is top notch and the sound system is amazing. Prices are very reasonable and the money received goes to nonprofit programs for differently abled children. They do excellent community work and you can feel good knowing your ticket money and tips are going to a great cause!!!

Normally, I don't get all gushy over an art store, because they don't strike a chord with me, but this place really did. The proprietress, Ellen, is really sweet and takes the time to find a piece of art that fits you and your budget. Sandywoods is a planned residential arts and agriculture community that opened in Tiverton, RI in 2010. They offer live affordable concerts year round and are a BYOB and BYOF venue. They have tables for eight, but can seat up to 150 people with one of the best acoustical systems in a beautiful room. Our tickets were $12 and today's 8 hour Folk Festival is "pay what you can". They offer monthly Contra Dancing, open mic night, classes, etc. Brook Williams was great - reminded us of a musician we heard at The Narrows for three times the price. Our only regret was waiting so long to go here!

A very Rhode island…read morefestival Johnny Cakes have been around for a while, in fact most historians say they have been around in one form or another for centuries. Even though many places on the east coast have Johnny Cakes, Rhode island is traditionally given as the place where they originated or at least became popular. So what better place than Rhode Island to have a Johnny Cake Festival Just fried corn meal with some salt, hot water and perhaps some sugar, it is amazing how many different types have showed up. Lots of subtle differences and of course everyone claims theirs are the best. Actually the festival was a lot more than just Johnny Cakes and in the whole festival I only saw one vendor actually selling Johnny Cakes. The lines were so long that we didn't even bother and stuck with the lobster rolls, clam chowdah, clam cakes and kettle corn. So much food around that there was no way you were going hungry even without the Johnny Cakes. Some cool critters like sheep, goats and alpacas were around and lots of skillful artists spinning, carving, wefting, blacksmithing, weaving, and painting. A whole bunch of very talented and fascinating folks still knowledgeable about some anachronistic arts. Some great music and several environmental groups were around to entertain and of course lots of traditional and cool food and crafts. The location was lovely with a pleasant pond and several canals and waterfalls. The parking wasn't bad because they wasn't any. Everyone parked at the old fairground three miles away and were shuttled in by old school buses. Actually made it less chaotic. A cool festival and place to learn about New England arts, crafts, history and of course food. It was kind of curious that there weren't more Johnny Cakes. This review is dedicated to Cathy S.and Shiro. I wish they could have been there with us.

As a non-native Rhode Islander I was definitely impressed with this past weekend's Johnny Cake…read moreFestival. It was great to sample some food & wares that aren't available in my part of RI. Lots of cool & eclectic vendors mostly skewered towards the uniquness of the Ocean State. Lots of food & Johnny Cakes too but I didn't have any. Two of my local favorites had a presence there: Grey Sail & Dave's Coffee. There was also live music. I got to sample some pumpkin flavored whiskey from Sons of Libtery that made me want more. I'd drink whiskey but my wife says I turn into a different person so I'll wait for them to release their Dave's Coffee syrup flavored vodka! The only drawback is that transportation to get to the actual festival. Even though you have to take a cramped school bus to get there it's definitely worth & I'll be taking my family for years to come.
