I was certified as a Basic Scuba Diver in 1978 (more about this later). After 30+ years, I decided…read moreto renew my interest in scuba diving on a vacation to Antigua. I took the resort's refresher course and felt pretty good about my skills. On the first open water dive, I had difficulty descending below 30 feet. The dive instructor sent me back to the boat. As soon as I returned from Antigua, I discovered that PADI revised the requirements for certification in 1987 without notifying me of the change. I searched online for dive instructors in the Raleigh, NC area. I contacted another dive shop as well as Kevin about my needs. Only Kevin returned my call/email. Kevin's online reviews all seemed very good so I called him and left a brief message explaining that I wanted to upgrade my Basic diver certification to an Open Water certification (which is what I thought I had originally). Kevin was down in Cozumel on a dive trip (which I strongly suggest) but called me back within a day or two. We discussed my situation and he suggested a "hybrid" approach consisting of the areas that PADI had added to my original training that I could do along with a group course he had starting the following month. (He was scheduled to teach one "diver" to swim before teaching scuba - that's how accommodating he is). The group cancelled so I basically had individual lessons, customized just for me, at no additional cost. In- pool activities were at a local Raleigh pool with "open water" dives at Fantasy Lake, which is a great place to dive. Because of Kevin's understanding and flexibility, I essentially took the whole open water course and was re-certified as Open Water Diver within one month. I strongly recommend Kevin Alexander for scuba instruction for all levels of divers. I have since completed the Advanced Open Water course while on a dive trip with Kevin to Cozumel.

There are four things I want to say about Air Hogs Scuba and its owner, Thomas…read more First, if you're the too long; didn't read type, I HIGHLY recommend Air Hogs Scuba for your needs. In Raleigh? Durham? Drive the extra distance. It's worth it. Second, Thomas and Co undoubtedly know their craft. There are experts, and then there are THE experts. I don't have the largest sample size, but of the shops I've visited in NC and FL, Air Hogs Scuba has THE experts in the field. There is not a question I have asked that has not just been answered but answered in-depth with explanations and reasons why. Third, Thomas has been imparted with Forbidden Knowledge only granted by the Goddess of the Deep after your 1,000th dive about regulator service. I brought my regs in for service, fully ready to get a new pair because they kept leaking at the end of a season. Thomas discouraged me from getting new ones, instead explaining why they did that, what I could do to fix it on the fly, and what he could do to tune my regs to be the best they've been. I just finished using them on eight dives of various depths after service, and not only do they not leak or have any issues; they breathe better than any set I've ever used. The only restriction I had breathing was tweaking the flow setting to try to optimize my breathing effort. The work blew me away. And they work on Hog gear, which many shops won't touch. Finally, I want to say Thomas and those at Air Hogs are genuinely lovely people looking out for the diver and not their bottom line. They went out of their way to ensure I got my regs back in time for a dive. I went in to talk about getting a new BC setup, and Thomas encouraged me to dive a new setup first before spending money on it and even offered customizations if I did decide to go with the new setup (plate & wing). I got the impression I would have to convince HIM to sell me one without trying it first! That's just good customer service and good (diver) community service, in my opinion. Again, I HIGHLY recommend Air Hogs Scuba. They are knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and genuinely care about their customers and craft.

Joe, who I'm learning now is the owner, gave me his cell number so we could stay in contact about my upcoming trip to the Galapagos Islands--a destination he's visited six times, if memory serves. He wants to put me in touch with his contacts there for tours, lodging, the works. That's the kind of out-of-the-ordinary service I wouldn't have expected but received anyway. Honestly, everyone in the place was outstanding. I made my appointment and paid with Marcela, did paperwork with Meghan, and trained with Anthony (Li'l Momoa) for my diving refresher course. Things were a little harried at first, but I didn't think I'd be able to finish this course in a couple of hours, so I cleared my schedule. As usual, it's a question of expectation vs. delivery. I think the quality of equipment, expertise, and instruction are well worth the time spent making sure ducks were in a row and all was prepared exactly right. Safety comes first--diving is a fun time, but it carries its share of dangers. Learning how to avoid them isn't something I'd prefer rushed. I want to know it all very well before I go giant striding into open water. Diving isn't a cheap pastime. But it's one that will be incredibly rewarding if preparation and equipment are in order. And I feel as though Open Water Adventures knows that and puts it into practice.

I did pay for a covered chairs for 2 which was worth the price. A disappointment was the rides and pools closed abruptly around 3:30 p.m. due to the threat of rain. While safety always comes first, it ended up not raining at all, so it was frustrating to lose several hours. Also, the staff had no idea and provided little updates when it did close. I wish there were more indoor or covered seating areas to escape the sun and enjoy a meal comfortably and possibly an adult area. I loved the lazee river was able to go around and around and relax. I also enjoy riding the edge it is so thrilling. Also note that on a normal day some rides (located in the back of the park) close an hour earlier than the park's closure and some rides open an hour later after the park opens (soak zone). You do have to pay to park. I had a fun visit and would definitely come back. Hopefully next time the weather cooperates a little better. As most reviews I will be back it is too close to home to not enjoy and next time I will review the food a bit more.

This park is perfectly lined with trees in abundance. Perfect for barbecuing. We enjoyed our morning picnic and the water was very relaxing. I appreciate how clean the sand area was and the garbage was well organized as well. I brought my mother who is 72 and I had concerns about the proximity of the restrooms and showers and overall access. I was relieved to discover how convenient the beach access was for those with mobility impairment and disabilities. There are no pets allowed and no alcohol permitted. I watched the park rangers escort someone with a pit bull to the parking lot to return home and a woman was asked to dump out several beer cans. You have been warned. They run a tight ship here. I plan to return throughout the remainder of the summer months.

She was doing a lot of talking over me so I already was kind of thinking this isn't going to work, but honestly I couldn't find another place that fit with my travel, home location etc. so I decided I wouldn't make my final decision on that. I ended up going into the gym one day in person, there weren't too many people in there so it was a bit awkward but I talked to the owner and he was being extremely short with me and when asking him questions about the gym or plans, he seemed to be extremely annoyed with me and bewildered as to why I would be asking questions and what I wanted to know, after explaining to him that I would like more info. Anyway, I walked around a bit and then left. After that I was still attempting to give it a chance, thinking maybe I'm being too sensitive, so I sign up for the monthly service. I go there one day, no one is to be found, no one is answering the phones at either location. After calling twice I got someone to answer who told me she would find out what was going on (she was at the other location). This was a Thursday, she called me right after that to say she wasn't getting response but when she did she would let me know. I never heard from her again until the following Monday. Mind you, I called Friday, Saturday and Monday as well to get updates. I was trying to get updates on if hours had changed, if something happened, they just didn't want my business, like I just wanted to know what the issue was. Only Monday afternoon did I get response asking me if I wanted to try again and clearly I said no because if I'm paying money but can't even get anyone to respond to me for days on end, I don't understand why I would do that. I did ask her to cancel my membership, she didn't respond that it was done so hopefully it was or I guess I will have to track them down once again just to get some kind of response after they charge me erroneously, because I will not be driving back up there to waste my time. Also when I went to go to the gym it was before the 11am closing they have listed on all places. On that Thursday I went around 10am and when I called that following Friday & Saturday those calls were also made before 11am, so maybe they were just screening my calls at that point but I also called from my work phone with no answer either so who knows! Don't determine anything based on my review, for you but for me it didn't work nor make sense.

The shade is nice on warmer days, and you forget you are in a city walking through the park. I originally stopped by the park to see the nine-foot-tall, bronze monument of the power couple, Shirley and Henry Frye. They have a monument holding hands with plaques for each of their accomplishments. Maria Kirby-Smith created the monument in 2024. Henry Frye was the first African American Chief Justice on the NC State Supreme Court. Shirley Frye was a community leader and activist. She and her husband met as students at North Carolina Agricultural &Technical State University. Henry graduated with highest honors. He majored in biology and minored in chemistry. He joined the Air Force and served in both Korea and Japan. But he was still denied the right to vote in North Carolina because of the literacy test designed to keep African Americans from voting. He became a lawyer to correct the racist system in North Carolina. He was appointed to the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1983 by Governor James Hunt, becoming the first African American justice. He served for 16 years and was elected to this position in 1984. In 1999, he was named Chief Justice before retiring in 2001. Shirley earned her bachelor's degree in Education and English. She taught at Washington Elementary School, then earned her Master's degree in special education and psychology. She served the Greensboro community as a special education teacher. She then went on to be the assistant to the Vice Chancellor at A&T. She also worked for the state Department of Public Instruction. She won an Emmy Award while working as vice President of community relations at WFMY News 2. She earned the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1985, which is the highest civilian award in North Carolina. I also enjoyed the peacefulness of the fountain with the bronze sculpture Libation. Jim Coper created this in 2006; the sculpture consists of two containers that continuously brim over into the fountain. He also created the bending-grass iron fences at the entrances and flowerbeds. A pavilion is used for live performances, and there are plenty of benches for seating, along with some tables if you want to have lunch in the park.
