I went ahead and booked my apartment online and showed up on a Friday afternoon at 3 PM. When I first entered the salon I got pretty excited. It had a stylish yet cozy feel. A little counter and sitting area greeted me - I noticed a good amount of seating and of course quite a few little things for sale - shampoos, conditioners, hair products, candles, brushes, etc. It was tastefully done. I popped a squat in the sitting area after checking in and waited for my stylist. It didnt take much time for her to finish with her current client and get to me. I cant remember her name but I do remember thinking our time together was a little awkward. We made small talk once or twice during the hair wash, trim, and blow dry session. It was nice to not have to talk-talk-talk, but we just didnt seem to click until she began straightening my hair. Awkward conversation aside, I can say that she 100% pulled through. She took off the split ends without chopping too much length off of my hair, she then took her time to blow dry and straighten my hair, and then put some glorious product in it that made it look and feel FANTASTIC! I am currently on day 3 of my straight hair and I can testify that it is still straight without me having to take MY straightener to fix it in the mornings. I would definitely recommend this place and plan on coming back. So glad to have a cute, affordable salon just 10 minutes down the road.

My last three experiences have been beyond relaxing more like stressful and annoying. If I ever have to settle here again Ooltewah Nail Bar will never see my partner and I again. Mia is my regular nail technician, and she consistently does a fantastic job. She's not only incredibly skilled, but also personable and attentive. I always leave with beautiful nails and a smile. Tom has also done my manicure a few times, and he's excellent -- especially with shaping and being extra gentle since I have thin nails. I've visited many nail salons in different states, and Zen Nail Spa is truly one of the best. Their customer service is top-notch, and the quality of their work is consistently amazing. I only came in because I was looking for something quick. For starters, there were several times during my appointment where a staff member(s) would either 1) stand by the person doing my nails and talk to them specifically without acknowledging my presence and/or 2) stare at me from a distance with other staff members. Additionally, I noticed other customers staring at me as well. Nothing wrong with the stares perhaps; at the same time, there is a difference between looking at someone briefly and staring someone down. Again, I received "stares." All in all, I would say the "vibe" from a third person perspective (specifically, my perspective) was othering. The only reason I left a one star review is because the person who did my nails was excellent at doing their job. As someone who enjoys getting their nails done, I am very well versed in acrylic nails and what I like in them. So the person (Noah) was meticulous and patient. I enjoyed that. Additionally, I really love the finished product - I did not provide a picture because I want to make sure my words are acknowledged first and foremost. I would not recommend this business to anyone who is similar to my identity: Black, queer, neurodivergent, or (such as myself) ALL the above. Additionally, I would not recommend this establishment to individuals who are new to the world of acrylic nails. Suggestion (if you feel disappointed by this review and you're looking for someone to do your nails): invest in independent nail technicians! After this experience, I have realized that as an intentional kind of person, an independent nail technician may be the best way to go.
