This is an absolute gem of a yoga studio! The owner, Alexandra, is so incredibly warm, kind, and welcoming, and the space itself is just so warm and comforting and friendly. All of the teachers are amazing, whether you are looking for a more slow-paced restorative class, or a faster paced vinyasa class. They also have a wide variety of special events and workshops and I've enjoyed everything I've attended. If you're looking for a true neighborhood yoga studio, I can't recommend Namaskar enough. I've just started attending classes at Namaskar YOGA as I've just moved back to the area and i'm researching studios. They have a variety of classes to attend from beginner to advanced. I've had my fair share of instructors and each one here is extremely knowledgeable about yoga... from pranayama to the obvious - asana. I love that the classes are smaller which means more hands on time for those that like it - like me who enjoys posture correction. There are workshops for you to attend, items to purchase like mats and prayer beads and a large collection of books to read if you like it. I also love the care they give to students. Last October, I was looking to get back into yoga, but couldn't find a studio that had what I needed. I wanted small, personal, friendly, and welcoming, so when a friend recommended Namaskar, I checked it out. I hadn't done yoga in a number of years, so I chose the Monday night Yoga Basics class with David, as a way to try to get back into it. Fast forward to today, I have made my way to that class every week since (give or take a holiday here and there). The studio is everything I was looking for, small, personal, friendly and welcoming, and add to that the fantastic instruction from David and I have found my place. From the first class, David brought me back to yoga with all the care, knowledge, grace, and humor I needed. While I have worked my way into more challenging classes at Namaskar, I keep coming back to my Monday night's with David, as he has this really cool way of introducing yoga to new members, but also making it challenging and beneficial for those of us who keep coming back. I get a workout, if that's what I want, or I can choose a more restorative class, or get both in one! It's all about feeling absolutely amazing when I finish a class here. Don't be suprized if owner Chris DeLizer suddenly has you doing postures you never thought you could, safely and with expert guidance. I've had more transformation here than anywhere else, and absolutely love to be in the space. So easy to get to, as well! Right on Irving Park and Southport. Namaskar YOGA - Feel Wonderful @ Namaskar! - Yoga Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

I'm not wild about commitment, especially with regard to gyms and memberships. I loathe the idea of getting locked into a routine, wasting money, and of missing out on better opportunity. The deal-a-day craze has been great for my commitment-phobic ways; when You Swoop featured a 5-week unlimited yoga deal at Namaskar, I couldn't pass it up. From the moment I walked into Namaskar, I felt comfortable. The studio is simple and not the least bit intimidating. It's worth noting that the studio's washroom and changing area are at the back; the only way to access it is cross the class space. I would advise coming dressed for class. All of the classes are drop-in, which is good in some cases, but tough for some of the really popular ones, and class lengths vary. My first class was Yoga for Runners; I highly recommend this class and urge you get there early. I got there just before the start and it was jam packed. The class is great for addressing typical pain points that plague runners. My only (selfish) wish is that class wasn't on Sundays or was offered more than once a week - it's the same day as another favorite yoga class of mine elsewhere. During my 5-week trial, I also took a several Vinyasa classes with 3 different instructors. I really enjoyed all of the instructors teaching styles. Each instructor was good about providing instruction, demonstration and modifications where necessary. I prefer classes that challenge me without intimidating or overwhelming me and Namaskar fit the bill. I also liked that a lot of attention was paid to form, breathing and holding poses - not just whizzing through a class plan. In addition to yoga classes, Namaskar offers a variety of workshops including Yoga for Runners, Reiki, and acupuncture. I recommended the runners' workshop to friends and they raved about it. I can't say I'm ready to settle down and commit to a yoga studio just yet, but I'd like to become a regular visitor to Namaskar. I really enjoyed my experience at the studio; there are only two small areas, which I think could be improved. First, I'd like to see an online scheduling system, it would be nice to reserve a spot for popular classes. Second, I wish there was more space between classes, at worst there's only 10 minutes for class changes. Bottom line: This is a great, welcoming studio and deserves a strong 4.5 stars. I highly recommend it whether you're a novice or avid yogi. *TIP: Mats are located near the props and you can use them for free. read more

Namaskar is a wonderful neighborhood yoga studio! Alexandra, the owner, is very welcoming and compassionate. If you love yoga, you have the option of participating in work-exchange which allows you to take free yoga classes in exchange for working two shifts (signing people in at the front desk, completing financial transactions, cleaning floors, etc). It's a great program to be involved with. The teachers are fantastic, particularly Alison, Tina, and Jack! Make sure you take their classes :). The space and props are always clean and promote a feeling of zen. If you bring a mat, there is storage place for it but you can also borrow one of the studio mats as well. You can even buy a mat (as well as other props like blocks, eye pillows and essential oils) at the front desk. read more

I've wanted to try Namaskar since I've moved here about a year ago. It's a little far away from me, but I finally was able to drop in for David's intermediate class on Wednesday night. David was so friendly and greeted me right away. Looks like he has a following of yogis and I can see why. His class is a good mix of everything - strength, arm balances, stretching, core, and more. He caters to all levels by offering modifications. I also enjoyed his humor and relaxed vibe. My only complaint about this studio is the lady at the front desk signing people in. I told her I was new and she did not greet me or welcome me. She didn't give me a rundown of the place nor did she tell me how much the drop in fee was until she took my card and I asked her. Fortunately, David and the other welcoming yogis made up for that first impression. I bought a Groupon for this place after researching a few yoga studios. The Groupon was a great deal ($45 for 10 classes). I wanted a studio that was more focused on mind-body connection than hyper-fitness-y yoga (sorry CorePower), and Namaskar fits the bill. They have classes for all levels of students. It's great to be able to try the variety of classes they offer-- basics, yin, restorative, etc. The environment is cozy and relaxing (although can be a little tight if there is a big class). I've done six classes so far with five instructors. All have been warm and caring, and have met students where they're at to try to make the most comfortable experience. I highly recommend this studio if you're a person like me who was a little intimidated to start practicing. It's an incredibly welcoming environment. They also have equipment for you to use, so you don't have to buy or bring your own. read more

I love Namaskar - a true yoga studio without pretentiousness or anything like that. It's hard to fully describe the relaxed, laid back vibe - definitely something you need to experience to completely realize and appreciate. I started going here a little over a year ago. I had been out of practice so I took their Beginner's course to ease back into it, which was great. It's definitely not just for people who are completely new to yoga - it's a slower pace with more detailed instruction that anyone can benefit from. On top of that, Tina is awesome. Please note I have not taken a yoga class here, this review is for customer service. I partook in a Reiki training session here last Saturday (which was great, btw) and in the midst of my Zen afterwards while putting on my coat, left all my materials and my certificate in the lobby. I called Monday morning and not only did they have it safely stowed in the desk, but when I told her I wouldn't be able to get there for several days, she mailed it to me, thus saving me a trip. I am incredibly grateful; it was a very generous thing to do. Small community yoga center (there is even a place to leave your mat). Parking on a Saturday was pretty easy. I fear that I am falling in love with this studio. This is a blessing and a curse at the same time. A blessing because I've been looking for the perfect yoga studio - a studio that has found a balance between working out the body and the mind. I love Namaskar Yoga and have been singing the praises of this small studio for several weeks now. It is simply wonderful. I have been taking their 6 week intro to yoga course and hope to continue with some of their other classes once the 6 weeks is over. I have been wanting to try yoga for many years, but I have always been intimidated by group classes and...well...intimated by anything requiring physical movement. Lately, in an effort to regain control of my health, I have been striving to exercise on a regular basis and improve my overall fitness. A co-worker convinced me to take and intro to yoga class with her, and I will always be thankful that she did. Everyone at Namaskar Yoga has made me feel very welcome. The teachers and other students are all friendly and respectful. I really feel as though I am learning, and I feel challenged by each class. It is nice being in an environment where people are there to practice and learn. I never feel any judgement if I am unable to do something, and I love that the teachers offer variations on the different poses and encourage students to go at their own pace. Yes, they will push you, but they will do so while keeping your own personal strengths and weaknesses in mind, thus making sure that you are healthy and safe. I got my puppy in July and essentially my life ended for a good 5-6 months...she is finally at a place where I am beginning to have my life back again, which meant getting back in the yoga saddle. I love moksha, but my favorite locations are so far away from home, so did some research and decided to check out namaskar yoga over the holidays, because we have 2 wks off of work. I love that they offer $10 class for first time users, or 1st time taking a teacher, which is awesome because more than anything, the key to a great class is finding a teacher that really suits your style. The studio is small, cozy, vintage-y, warm and inviting, just the way yoga should be (at least in my humble opinion). I've been going there over a month, and have tried at least 5 different teachers and can actually say I love them all, which is rare. Of course I discover this place a month before I move to Lincoln Park, but I have no intentions of looking anywhere else. read more

Namaskar is my oasis of ease and peace. I have been practicing in the studio for nearly a year and it just keeps getting better the more classes I experiment with and teachers I meet. I got hooked through the community classes - a very welcoming way to enter for someone who had never practiced at a yoga studio before. (I recently moved to Chicago from a rural area where I went to a community center.) The community classes have students of all abilities that just love to practice. The teachers are creative and find a way to support each student achieve their potential at their current skill level. The community class teachers Larissa and Jana are amazing - approachable, knowledgeable, and fun. I always feel good settling in to start class and even better when I leave. Since my community class toe dip in the water I have added some regular classes to my weekly routine. I practice with Larissa on Monday nights for the flow class and have started to take Suzanne's class on Saturdays too. I am happily ready to leave for Namaskar in a few minutes for this more challenging class. I love vinyasa flow yoga and the fact that I learn a new pose or transition each class from these great teachers. Everyone's friendly, the studio is convenient (easy payment, parking's not too bad - even better a bike rack right in front) it's a beautiful space -TONS of natural light - with plenty of props for everyone. This is the kind of place where the owner will get to know you, give you a free class for your birthday, and notice when you don't make it in for awhile. I have grown tremendously in my practice since Namaskar has been part of my routine and it's impossible to put into words how it all works together, you just have to try it. Since moving to Chicago last year, I had been looking for a yoga studio where I can continue to improve my practice. I always try to avoid bigger chain yoga studios because they can be very impersonal and care more about money than the practice itself. Well, Namaskar was exactly what I was looking for PLUS much more! Alexandra (the owner) is so welcoming and down-to-earth and is almost always there to see how things are going. How often do you see an owner so involved? It's obvious that she has a deep passion for yoga and the studio environment is a great reflection of that! The teachers are all amazing as well. I've taken a few different classes and have loved each and every one of them! The teachers always help you improve your postures, and if something proves too difficult, they will always offer an alternative pose that offers the same great benefits! I found this place thanks to yelp so I thought I'd give back and tell everyone how wonderful it is. Coming from a year off of yoga and that year had been spent doing yoga at corporate 24 hour fitness, this studio has been a saving grace and revitalized how I feel about yoga. I thought I loved yoga before but I had no idea how much I could love yoga until this place. It actually feels like a real yoga studio and by that I mean, when you walk in you feel a sense of peace. It's not that big which I love. Classes are small enough that you can get the attention and help you need from the instructors which they do without being pushy. There are mats you can use if you need extra padding for your mat and water and tea are available. There is a discounted rate for students as well. I usually go to Gina's class and she is wonderful. The class is challenging but pushes you in the best way. You don't feel judged if you can't do what other people are doing. Your practice is about you only. Modifications are shown for each pose to fit your level. I got up in to headstand for the first time today and I was able to learn bridge pose a few weeks ago. Going away for vacation soon and am sad because I don't want to fall out of practice! This place will help you grow by leaps and bounds! read more

I've gotten a couple of deals for this studio and i always enjoy the classes. The teachers are friendly and always cater their classes to the requests of the students. Their record keeping is kind of sketchy. I've gotten 2 different calls from the studio owner (I forget her name) over the last 6 months to confirm that I had paid for a class I attended, which I find odd because you have to check-in at the door, before they even let you into the class. I also find the temperature of the studio too warm when the weather is over 85 since they don' t have A/C. I do like the place and continue to go back. read more

This is the most friendly yoga studio I've been to so far in Chicago. It's also only a 4 block walk from my place, so that makes it even better! I decided to try a class because of the location, and I am really glad I did! I went to a Saturday morning class, and there were only about 4 others there, so the instructor was able to correct poses and even give a little foot massage at the end! I also went to the donation class on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and it was packed! But still, the instructor was helpful and made everyone feel as though they were welcome. The owner, Alexandria, greeted me both times I've been, and offered a new student "try different instructors" plan, so that each time I try someone different, it's still the $10 new student price. She also sent a very sweet welcome email! As for other details, they have have mats and other yoga props available to use, and water/tea in the back. I love this studio! It is a small, intimate space with a place to hang your coats, a small desk, and the rest is the actual studio. I really like this set up because they lock the door once the class starts, so no late-comers interrupt! It's warm, cozy, and they provide mats/blocks/blankets/bolsters, as well as allowing regular customers to store their personal mats at the studio. I haven't been to all the instructors but every one I had was great. They did a great job of keeping the class flowing (no pun intended) while offering options appropriate for beginner to advanced. I always leave Namaskar feeling better than when I arrived. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I would like a little more variety in the classes; they seem to offer only vinyasa with a few variations, such as pre-natal or runners'. Therefore, it is perfect when I'm looking for a vinyasa class but to branch out from that I will need to head somewhere else. Definitely worth checking this place out! read more

I took advantage of another great yelp promotion and purchased the one month pass to Namaskar Yoga. Well, I have now had my 2nd class (both Vinyasa), both with Larissa and I'm thrilled about it. First, thanks for the yelp deal, as I probably would not have known about this yoga space. Great way to promote yoga and small businesses at the same time. Second, I love the studio! The first time I went for class, I was like this is way too small. But, I was mistaken. It's just right. Cozy, peaceful and calming. Very community orientated and friendly. Major pluses. Third, Larissa is awesome! I've practiced yoga for many years and you come across so many teachers that when you find one or two that you like... you stick with them. I really like Larissa's style of teaching: precise, attentive and calm all at the same time! I look forward going to class. No work on a Friday? Sweet deal. Instead of sleeping until some ridiculously late hour in the day, I decided to get up at a normal hour and wander into a new yoga studio. (Truthfully, I have a whole book of passes to a ton of fitness places around the city and felt like I should really start using 'em.) Namaskar caught my eye since it's semi-close to my 'hood and had convenient Friday class times. Namaskar is the perfect balance between a relaxing and challenging yoga class. The first part of the Vinyasa class was deceiving as we warmed up with very chill movements and lots of breathing. But...then came the multiple chaturangas, upward dogs, dolphin, boat, side planks and sit-ups...oh my! The end of class was truly a moment of relaxation and being grateful for making it through class. Challenging, yet lovely, class for a Friday morning, no doubt. The teacher was perfect (but, sadly, she announced that she would be departing Chicago shortly). She was calming, provided great, detailed instruction and adjusted everyone's poses as she saw fit. With only 7 students in class, everyone received individualized attention and it's really hard to feel intimidated. You can go at your own pace and no one judges. Added bonus! Namaskar's yoga studio space is basically just one large, inviting room! The front part of the studio is used for check-in, hanging coats, storing shoes and mats. The part of the studio where class takes place is sectioned off with a curtain, so people outside can't peer in during class. There are mats, blocks, straps for students to use...as well as water and tea. FYI - If you have absolutely no prior yoga experience, try to attend one of Namaskar's Intro to Yoga classes or else you might be a little lost while the instructor blurts out some random/odd names of poses. Although it's easy to follow along with a demonstration, you might feel a little stressed/flustered at first. read more

I became a quick fan of Namaskar Yoga. Here are the bullet points: -The instructor I had was really great. I'm forgetting her name but she did the 4:45 class on Tues/Weds. She was supportive, calming and engaging, had a great attitude and gave each of us in the class individual attention. I've never been able to do a headstand but with her gentle prodding and encouragement, I managed my backbend/headstand unassisted. Woo hoo! -The studio is small and cozy, but in a good way. Enough room for us to have our own space but could not cavernous or like an airport hangar. -The music is more contemporary than "new agey" which I really appreciate. Soft and not distracting but having lyrics or hearing a favorite artist while relaxing is a bonus in my book. When my schedule allows, I hope to return to Namaskar for a more regular practice. Namaskar is in my hood (kitty-corner from my house) and I have tried it out a few times. The classes are great and the absence of mirrors is actually really appreciated. Alexandra, the owner, is really, really friendly (and she patronizes my favorite coffee spot in the city, Asado on Irving Park, so she gets double brownie points for that). The only thing I wish is that there were more later morning (say, 7:45 or 8 AM) or lunchtime classes. read more

I've been itching to get in the habit of doing yoga regularly for a long time. Before anybody throws rocks at me, I did enjoy yoga on the Wii Fit. Yes, I know it's not the same thing, but it gave me a taste of the practice and made me want to pursue it. After searching for yoga studios near my apartment and getting advice and recommendations from friends, I finally decided to try out Namaskar. Technically, Bikram is closer to my apartment in Andersonville but sweating with a bunch of Groupon fiends just didn't seem appealing to me. So I went two weeks ago to my first class with a friend. We participated in the last class of a 6-week beginners session. I called the studio ahead of time to get advice from one of the instructors. I spoke with Alexandra, the owner of the studio, who was absolutely wonderful and beyond helpful. Jody was my first instructor and she was fantastic. Calming, insightful, and direct. The class was bigger than I expected, about 12-15 people. The atmosphere of the studio is great, too. Hardwood floors, warm furniture and walls, it's perfect for a yoga class. After my first class, I immediately signed on to come in a few days later for a second class, the Vinyasa class with Jody. Again, awesome! There was more of a challenge which was exciting and I definitely felt it the next day. I came back over the weekend for another class with Jana. She was even more challenging with difficult poses and faster movement. But I liked that! You're encouraged to keep up at your own pace without falling over the other students. Another great experiecne. So far, it's been a lot of fun. I'm hoping to make a trip to Namaskar at least twice a week. For beginners like me, I highly recommend it. read more

What a nice little neighborhood yoga studio.... I came to Namaskar for the Tuesday evening class...it was supposed to be 1 hour and 15 minutes and wound up being 1 hour and 45 minutes! It was great, and with only 3 people in the class we all received alot of person attention and adjustments. The owner was very nice as well even wrote me a "Thank-you for trying our studio" email. What great customer service! The only thing that could have been better was the flooring. Most yoga studios are hardwood and I'm a stickler for having the floor be really clean. Their floor could have used some sweeping or a vacuum, my yoga mat got dirt and dust on it. But other than that the space is nice...it has natural light that shines through the doors and windows. I would recommend Namaskar to anyone in the Uptown/Wrigleyville vicinity who wants a great voga practice in a calming environment. read more

I used a 30 day unlimited Yelp deal in December. Loved this studio. I went at least two and sometimes three times in a week. I think I saw a different teacher at each class and enjoyed the differences. It's nice to have so many choices. I took fun yin classes where the poses flowed and moved at a nice pace. I even took a gentle class, a nice relaxing time. None of the classes felt too hard, but they were challenging. They allowed for those more experienced to up their practice and those who wanted to take it a bit easy could easily do that too. I like the room. I always felt relaxed there, day or night. The only thing I don't really like is the small space to leave your things out front and it seems a bit weird that people bring their bags into the studio near their mat. I did this too, but I wasn't a huge fan. The front area is so small that is gets a bit crazy in between classes. They have mats, blocks, blankets, straps, etc that you can borrow free of charge. Love that. Overall I really enjoyed this studio and would go back. read more

Namaskar studio is a welcoming, easy place for anyone's yoga practice. Alexandra is a beautiful person - I love that she gets to know people and invites suggestions and comments. I had always done flow classes, and I was not familiar with either yin, restorative, or even mindful yoga. I loved them because they didn't involve getting up and down as much - my knees don't like that! But now I am finding that these practices have also connected my body and spirit in ways I never thought possible. Though I don't take the Intermediate classes, they must be great too because there are so many people coming out of them. I do the $99 per month, which I think is a great deal. And, one more thing... the teachers are great. Everyone of them is so kind and will help adapt poses for any physical issues you may have. and remember yoga is not competitive - it's all about you. I think if everyone did restorative yoga on Sunday nights, Monday mornings would be a whole lot better! read more

I went to my first class at Namaskar on Sunday and it was really enjoyable. We took the Sunday afternoon Vinyasa class. The instructor, Jana, was awesome-- very interactive and not intimidating. I felt very comfortable and was super relaxed afterwards. Great mixture of levels and small class size. It was sufficiently challenging without completely kicking my ass. The studio was small but homey and comfortable. I loved that they had incense burning and it smelled really earthy in the studio. The only thing I'd say is, since it's small, get there early so you can get a good spot. And, it isn't super close to the train, so that was a bit of a down side. Otherwise, would have been a five star rating! I'll definitely be back-- because I really liked the instructor. read more

This studio is a warm, magical, yoga community full of friendly people and highly experienced, quality teachers. Their challenging Vinyasa flow classes will leave you with lifted spirit and blissfully yogafied, and the kind, beautiful owner Alexandra has definitely cultivated a welcoming environment here. Newcomers won't be intimidated, though there are definitely many talented practitioners at Namaskar. While it isn't terribly close to public transportation, it's good north Lakeview/south North Center location seems to draw a nice crowd. There is pay-for-parking on Southport, which could be challenging during busy hours, and bike racks out front. It is small - just a single room with a curtain separating the studio from the entrance area, and a bathroom in the back - but maybe that's what makes this place such a hidden gem - the fact that it isn't pretentious. There is tea and water in the back, and mats are available to use free of charge, though most people bring their own. I do. read more

I love this studio! I've been to Namaskar a handful of times and all my experiences have been positive and inviting. The space itself is welcoming and all the instructors I've taken a class from have been educated and clearly communicate what's expected of me. I enjoy Melanie's class on Wednesday morning...she's chill, knows how to teach and challenges appropriately. This studio is a gem on the Southport Corridor. read more

I initially visited Namaskar Yoga with a groupon offer. Every instructor that I've taken challenged me. My favorites though are Lourdes and Gina. Gina's 90 minute Advanced Flow incorporates vinyasa flow with challenging poses (arm balances, twists). The studio is cozy with friendly staff. I highly recommend this studio! read more
