She never went deeper... I prefer to not have foreign objects in my body so when I opted to have it removed for my menstrual issues, she LAUGHED in my face and said "good luck!" As in, "I know you'll fail!" Well, I didn't fail. I went to my Naturopath and she gave me a massive blood test revealing extremely low progesterone (causing major inflammation) among many other deficiencies (easy to find online after some time and research on my end as well...). My Naturopath then offered several suggestions in terms of herbs, vitamins and nutritional remedies. I can confidently say my Naturopath was on my side, helping me dig deeper. Dr. Pendergrass was more interested in trying to put a Band-Aid remedy on my inflammation that would only help her pay her bills. I actually don't fault her too much for this, as this is what you get from most Med schools -- cover it up until something else happens and then prescribe more pills or intervention until it all spirals out of control and your hormones are out of whack the rest of your life or you opt to get a hysterectomy... because, what other options are there that far down the rabbit hole? I haven't been back to Dr. Pendergrass and am so thankful I listened to my gut. Modern medicine has its benefits, don't get me wrong. I like her as a person... she's sweet and kind. If you are looking for a physician who will listen to you, advocate for you, and take your pain seriously, I strongly recommend Dr. Pendergrass. I felt respected and heard throughout all my interactions with her. I had been living with bad period pain and was diagnosed with fibroids by a different doctor who referred me to her, but I figured that excruciating monthly pain was just the price of having a uterus and I should just live with it. During our first consultation Dr. Pendergrass encouraged me to not downplay the pain I was in and gave me facts and information that helped me decide to go forward with the hysterectomy, which was an option I hadn't even considered before talking to her. When I had concerns up until the morning of surgery, she took the time to discuss and answer my questions fully. The surgery went extremely smoothly, and the post-op pain at its worst was less than half of what I had previously experienced every month. Dr. Pendergrass responded very quickly to all of my questions through the patient app both before and after surgery. She is honest, funny, she listened to me, and and she introduced me to treatment options I didn't know were available to me. My life is so much better and wish I would have seen her years ago!

Yes, people expect to have agency over their own bodies! lf you too feel like you would like to collaborate with a caring doctor I strongly urge you to look elsewhere. (The office staff and medical assistant were professional and this does not reflect on them.) Dr. Kyle could not muster even the pretense of empathy and in fact achieved the opposite. I left feeling like my very existence was an inconvenience, diminished and dismissed, traumatized- more afraid than ever (directly due to the complete lack of bedside manner, not b/c I was there for an emergency, uncommon or embarrassing issue). To her credit she was able to do so efficiently and with minimal time wasted. It's tempting to provide a play by play of what was at most a 10 min appointment to illustrate just how terrible the experience was- I don't want to share medical details online. Dr. Kyle could have in our short time together chosen to speak a single caring statement and I wouldn't not be writing these words, but did not extend a single scrap of empathy during our short time together. (It still would have been a waste of my time, but a little caring goes a long way.) I was not ONCE asked if I had any questions even though I intentionally mentioned it was my first time discussing imaging results with a doctor and that I have never had any surgery. With barely a glance my way, at my chart and with only a single question about my symptoms, the doctor IMMEDIATELY tried to push me into what I consider an extreme surgery with NO further explanation. I was shut down the moment I attempted to initiate a discussion- asking for "alternatives b/c given my medical history I have concerns re. surgical outcomes." Instead of addressing my concerns I was painted what was to me a terrifying image of a damaging surgery that would leave a long dramatic scar and shown the door.(BUT lol I was handed a FAQ lifted off the web but only the questions were printed- have to click the drop down for answers- I can google things-I see a Dr. to get an experts medical opinion! ) Yes, there is a possible alternative but they didn't even get the referral right- I think they googled it as it was the same place that made the FAQ but didn't bother to check that the procedure is done at the Minnesota office locations. I wasn't given the doctor's expert opinion on how viable of an alternative it is, success rate etc. or anything beyond the name of the procedure and the joke of googled half baked handout. Nor the opportunity to ask. I know many doctors have a hard job that in recent years have faced added challenges. I'm trying to give someone like this the benefit of the doubt- first impression was they looked exhausted/burnt out. I'm not out to bash anyone but to warn others and validate those who have had similar experiences. I genuinely wonder why doctors like this continue to practice medicine. I guess to pay the bills like the rest of us, it's one thing to quiet quit your office job- when one is a medical doctor there are potentially serious negative consequences for patients. My experience happened at Lake Oswego GYN a few years ago. I was recommended to Dr. Zaander by a…read morefriend who was a patient. I found the office staff to be very short, not particularly welcoming or kind. At first, I felt well cared for by Dr. Zaander. She diagnosed me with a rapidly growing fibroid and we decided immediate surgery was my best option, to remove both the fibroid and my uterus. She did the surgery. It was quite serious, I had to have a c-section due to the fibroid's size. After several months of recovery, my healing was slow and I had alarming symptoms. I started doing some research and came to suspect that my bladder had been damaged by a surgical tool during surgery and that there was hole in my bladder-called a fistula. I brought my concerns (using the word fistula) to the doctor's attention in both an email AND during an office visit. She refused to to admit that a fistula could be possible and kept saying "give it time" and "keep doing kegels" and was dismissive of my concerns. She tried to rush through the appointment until I INSISTED that she refer me to a bladder specialist. A week later, the specialist diagnosed a fistula after a five minute exam, and that's when Dr. Zaander abruptly ended all communication with me. After that first surgery, I suffered for nine months with the fistula before I could have corrective surgery. I've since talked to two other people who have had negative experiences at this office, feeling like they were not listened to. Had I been taken seriously, I would have nine months of my life back. I missed a lot of work and suffered needlessly because a doctor didn't want to admit error.

Always call your insurance provider on the back of your card to any confirm any surgery with any…read moredoctor. This simple task that will save you a ton of grief. You must make the CALL to confirm IF any procedure is approved. The doctor's office may mislead you and what is supposedly pre-approved may stick you with the entire bill. The word of a surgery clerk will not pay the five to six digit bill after the fact, no matter how confident they seem to be. You must make the call to confirm; and remember to keep your cell phone records if there is a timing dispute. I brought my proof of insurance card into the office over a month before the pre-surgery date. It was ignored. The staff laughed and actually told me there are procedural problems with scanning info and not bothering to do the data entry. Not informed, refusal to read notices I brought in from my insurance company about approval policies: there are still wait times for patients even with Obama Care depending on age and prior coverage lapses. This caused a scheduling bump beyond my control. Remember. Direct communication with your insurance company is your responsibility. Had I not called my insurance provider, I never would have known, the afternoon AFTER my surgery I was not told the truth about pre-approvals by the office. My calls were ignored days before by the coordinator, I was dumbfounded when she actually told me she decided to wait an entire day before calling for the surgery approval. By now it is late afternoon a little more than 48 hours before my surgery. The day before the surgery, I started calling for pre-approval. The insurance provider told me (by 3 different staff members) I was not pre-approved! I had to cancel and deal with trying to reschedule. Hence, keep your cell phone records, direct dial numbers of who you talked to AND get emails. I did. Then things get really bad. I was loudly berated by the doctor for canceling . With my coworkers who could hear her almost screaming scary highs and lows in her voice which finally ended with a total lack of control in the conversation. I'm still having nightmares. Obviously an ego blown. Probably another cover up for the staff and for the benefit of someone listening at the office. I was amazed at the shear terror and refusal to acknowledge any blame for the events or an apology; and yet had the nerve to calm down her terror twice and asked me about rescheduling. Update: I've now gone through two pregnancies/births with the Tuality OBGYN Practice and love them…read more(and the hospital) even more than before. Dr Geller stood in for Dr Rajska while she was on maternity leave. Dr Geller was absolutely wonderful in every way imaginable. I'm so thankful to have three doctors that I know and trust all so close to home! The practice went through a few (totally reasonable) hiccups when transitioning to the new OHSU ownership but it's been over a year since the transition and things seem to be running smoothly. And, BONUS, being apart of the OHSU network has been a real benefit as a patient because of all of my health records are basically in one place now and super easy to access in MyChart.
