I called at Miller and Carter to celebrate my birthday, after a bad experience with their…read moreManchester - King Street location, I decided to finally give them another chance due to an improved menu and the fact the Wilmslow location has always looked stunning in a grand old building with car park facilities, opposite the train station (Only 20-25 minutes into Manchester city centre!) The staff were fantastic and always seemed happy to help, my group did get there a little early and they didn't mind sitting them down with drinks even an hour before I arrived and the table was booked for, obviously, they wouldn't be able to do this during peak/busy times but it was nice they offered this. I did mention it was my birthday on the reservation, they didn't seem to acknowledge that but it is easy to miss these things in the notes, and the staff did seem friendly so it likely was the case of forgetting rather than being malicious and not caring. The restaurant had a relaxed, chilled and comfortable vibe, I loved sitting next to the radiator which was perfect on a cold winter's evening. My only criticism of the ambience was it was really dark, to the point where I had to lower my phone's screen brightness significantly as it was straining my eyes. There was a lack of vegetarian options, so one of my guests who isn't a meat-lover had to settle for fish and chips for her main but she did enjoy it. On the other hand, the gluten-free menu had many choices, in terms of different steak, meat and fish dishes. For my starter, I went for the scallops, I didn't enjoy the potatoes with this dish as they seemed to have something in them which meant they weren't as smooth as I would have liked my mashed potatoes, the scallops I didn't enjoy but I won't mark them down on that as this was the first time I ever tried scallops, and it'd be unfair otherwise. I ordered a Long Island Ice Tea to drink, I love how unlike other places (some of them even charge double the price), it tasted so good, and it looked good,t this is down to using household names and good brands in the ice tea, including Kettel One Vodka, Bacardi Rum and Pepsi Max, considering this was £6.75 I was especially pleased, considering a week earlier I had paid double the price for an awful, bitter drink which was also supposed to be a Long Island Ice Tea, so they did a good job here. I went for the chicken dish as my main course and I really enjoyed it, the chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and I loved the dauphinoise potatoes, they were cooked perfectly again and this is such a simple dish but it seems to get right, I've had many issues where they were bland, greasy and inedible, sometimes even with hard potatoes from other restaurants or as a part of a ready meal, and that wasn't the case here. I would have liked more of them, as good as the chicken was I found there was too much chicken compared to the other parts of the menu. The gravy/dipping pot was nice, but it was rich so again I wouldn't want too much of it. The food is a little high-end, but it was worth it to celebrate a special occasion, this isn't a typical restaurant to come to regularly though, but still with good quality food it is nice to come to, especially as the loyalty scheme makes it more affordable, just for downloading the app I was given a free glass of fizz (Normally £4.40) on my first visit. It is also a shame that the chips/fries are fried in the same oil as gluten-containing items (some Miller and Carter locations have separate friers), it's so frustrating, as good as the dauphinoise potatoes are, I wouldn't really want them with a steak, it's a shame they haven't invested in a separate frier yet and I strongly hope they consider it in the future, due to the price of the steaks I really would expect to have chips with it really. 4* - I had a good dining experience, this is one of my favourite places to eat in Wilmslow, after having multiple bad dining experiences on my past visits to the Cheshire East town, it was refreshing to finally have an experience of good food on a trip to Wilmslow and I will look forward to returning, it restored my faith in Miller and Carter.

We started off with scallops - beautifully cooked - with classic cauliflower purée and crispy pancetta and calamari - average. Then we accepted the inevitable and ordered steak, with a bottle of Malbec Rob got the steak with ribs - meat overload! And I just got a ribeye. The waiter was a little pushy on getting me to order medium. I usually eat steak medium rare - but he persuaded me that medium would be better. Not the best idea - I should have stuck to my guns - it was medium to well and a bit dry - at least a medium rare steak has a bit of juice!! Rob also found his rare steak was a tad over cooked - definitely not blue like he asked. For a steak restaurant this isn't good! The other thing was that the steak was overwhelmed with the extra 'stuff' it came with. You got to order a sauce separately - but they came with herb butter anyway. There were fries, onion loaf (? Like a slice of onion ring pie - good but bizarre!), watercress, tomato and a iceberg wedge with a different sauce. Basically a tonne of crap to detract from the actual steak!! This must be how they communicate value for money? Anyway we were pretty stuffed but managed to try some chocolate ganache and the chocolate pot mini dessert that comes with a hot drink. Despite my steak comments it was a pretty good meal - worth a try!

A small but perfectly formed pub only a stone's throw from Altrincham Market House, it's a great choice if you don't want to face a sea of people. There are actually two floors, so it's not as small as you first think on entering. The staff are warm and welcoming, offering suggestions if you're uncertain what to choose. They've always got something good on their few draught pumps, but don't be discouraged from trying a bottle from another part of the world - check out their eclectic international menu first. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are pots of complimentary peanuts for customers. A sales ploy I'm sure, but I love those small gestures, it makes me love the place even more. Alongside Belgian Bar, Mort Subite and Riddles, with Jack In The Box and Reserve (inside Market House), Altrincham now has a seriously enviable 'drinks quarter'.

As with Chorlton, there's a real neighbourhood bar element to this place and upon arrival the barmaid and one of the customers were having a good chat about the newest beers on offer from a great selection of breweries such as Camden, Brooklyn and some sweet looking Belgium options. I literally had 30 mins to spare before zooming off to my meeting but was hungry like the proverbial Duran Duran wolf so made a quick decision to have the tasty Matador pie (chorizo, beef, butterbeans, potato and olives) with a tasty side of minted mushy peas and homemade mash. The pie was amazing and in all came to £6.95 which I don't think was too bad for fodder of such quality! The hot meat choices were turkey, gammon, pork and beef. I could have added £1.99 or so to get two pigs in blankets (bacon wrapped pork sausages) but I declined. I got two Yorkshire puddings with the meats and set off to choose my cooked vegetables from one heck of a choice; roast, mashed & garlic potatoes, stuffing, carrot & swede, roast parsnips, cauliflower cheese, Brussels sprouts (a real favourite of mine) lots more veg choices, Colman's English mustard (5 stars alone) a rich gravy, an onion gravy and I'm sure I left something out too. It would be easier to say what's not there and I can only think of pepper sauce. I'd been warned off ordering the mega carvery, which apparently includes a giant, plate - sized Yorkshire pudding that the rest of the meal is put into. As if it couldn't get any better they had real ale. So I had a pint of Abbot (I think) ale; they also had Old Specked Hen (they could call it Golden Years speckled hen). The prices are reasonable, the seats comfy and mega friendly staff, oh and there's lots of parking and a play area for kids. Well worth supporting.

The bartender had NO IDEA what it was or how to serve it but we quickly got the ice/lemon/appropriate glass sorted and although it might seem expensive at £4.50 for 50ml it's a good alternative to wine for an aperitif. Prosecco was £22 a bottle which wasn't bad either. I thought the ale selection was a little limited although and I couldn't work out what the microbrewery aspect was (curiously they only seem to have a wine menu even though they have an extensive amount of fancy sprits which you can't see properly). As the evening (Saturday) wore on it became increasingly busy and uncomfortable to sit at the bar with people bashing past you to get their order - they probably need to move some of those chairs on busy nights (/you might want to try another option - amazingly the market was actually quieter by that point!).

I love their pizzas, made on a sourdough base and using the best quality and fresh Italian ingredients, they are cooked in less than 90 seconds in their wood-fired oven and taste incredible. On this occasion I shared an Honest Crust pizza with Neil C. who was as equally impressed with the pizza as I was. We went for a pretty classic pizza - Portobello mushrooms, garlic oil, tomato and mozzarella. It was served on a wooden board, straight out of the oven and was divine! They have around 8 pizzas on their menu to choose from, including some rather amazing specials. Notably the smoked pig cheek, red onion, fennel seed, tomato, chilli, pecorino and mozzarella pizza.. Yes! pig cheeks on a pizza! No wonder i like these guys,

Honest Crust seriously raised the benchmark for quality pizzas when they hit the scene with their…read moremobile wood-fired oven a couple of years ago. They became regulars at markets such as Altrincham's and there was always a queue of customers waiting hungrily for their wares. Fast forward to today and though there have been a few new pizza makers setting up their stalls in markets, at festivals and in bricks-and-mortar venues across Greater Manchester, they are still held in the highest regard. More so for the fact they have a permanent site inside Altrincham Market House which has itself won awards for being a fantastic food destination. Their blue mosaic tiled pizza oven (shipped over from Italy) is a thing of beauty and sits proudly producing probably several hundred doughy masterpieces each week. Their thin, beautifully charred sough dour pizzas are available in a regularly changing range of options, though they are probably better-known for their Atomica which includes 'Nduja, (a hot, spreadable sausage). The city centre, once devoid of seriously decent pizza, now has the likes of PLY, Rudy's, and other restaurants upping their game; Honest Crust are, for me, the real trailblazers and have to be eaten at repeatedly.
