Things of note to racers: - The race talk is important. - Pay attention when they tell you about the currents. They're not kidding! - There's a bagpiper at the start of the race (LOVE!). - They sang the national anthem. - There's carpeting leading in and out of the water so that racers don't hurt their feet on stones. - Some parts of the course are confusing. The bike and run involve a few loops and are sometimes biking/running along side one another. It's not always clear which way bikes should go and which way runners should go. - Both the bike and run start and end near a challenging hill. Things to note for volunteers: - Although there's a sign-up online, it's not necessary to do so. You can volunteer where needed the day of the race. - The volunteers are SUPPOSED to have specific time slots, but I witnessed several volunteers who were never given relief and felt compelled to stay MUCH longer than they agreed. Things to note for people cheering: - Be careful not to walk on the course. There are many places where it seems okay to stand or walk where it's not. - Since everything starts and ends close to the transition area, it's convenient to set up camp in a single location and cheer on your racers. - You should bring snacks and drinks as there isn't a whole lot available at the race. Not to say that there's nothing. Just not much. - Cell phone reception is spotty. We had three different carriers between us and none of us had a consistent signal. There were times when we didn't have signal at all.

No wonder the many event staff attendants along the beginning of the course were cheering so…read moremuch.....the last mile of the 5K course was pretty much consistent gentle paved rolling hills ahaha phewww. First-time participant at this event and, yeah, as someone who's used to mostly flat courses this one was a little challenging for me lol. Still fun though. The 5K course has a couple of glimpses of the Carquinez Strait, but most of the course is deep in the neighborhood. Other courses at the event are the 10K, Kids 1 Mile, and Kids Mini Run (200 meter dash). In terms of swag, I received a participant medal, a T-shirt, and a tote bag. Upon finish there were tables of fruit, water bottles, and Bodyarmor sports drinks. Nitpicks? Couldn't really hear the announcer at all lol his station was far behind the start line and his voice was pretty muffled because of that. *Highly* recommend arriving early for parking!! I arrived at around 7:15 AM and the closest available street parking spot was a few blocks away from the starting area.

This includes Northgate, Ygnacio Valley, Clayton Valley, College Park, Mt. Diablo, and Concord High. The 2012 race was held on October 7th at Newhall Community Park off Turtle Creek Rd. in Concord, CA. The 2012 program included an electonically-timed Competitive 5K Run, a 5K recreational run/walk, and a Kiddie Race. Pre-registration was $25, Day of Event was $30, and the Kiddie race was only $10. All participants who obtained $50 or more in sponsorships had their registration fees waived. Net proceeds benefit the United Mt. Diablo Athletic Foundation, a Sec. 501(c)(3) organization, which directly funds the high school sports programs of the MDUSD. Awards were given to top 3 finishers by Age & Gender Groups. The 5k is run entirely within Newhall Community Park. The course starts and ends in grassy areas within the park, but the majority of the course is run on paved and unpaved trails which encircle the park, including an entire loop, with a shortened 2nd inner loop. (See course map uploaded as a photo on Yelp as a .jpg file). The trail includes a few inclines and declines (small hills), but the total elevation gain is manageable. The race is a volunteer-run event, and as you would expect for an event of this type, a large number of the runners are local high school athletes and their family members. Overall, a great community event for the Concord, Clayton, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek area . . . and the MDUSD !!

Original review: British Swim School's Vallejo location, run by Cheronda A. and team, advertise their program as being able to "instilling water survival skills that save lives". After 17 months (64 lessons) and $2500 down the drain, we pulled our son from this program due to it being more akin to an aquatic day care (with you as the parent remaining present) than a swim program. The people at the school are nice enough interpersonally, but these are the red flags to notice: - After an initial few weeks you stop getting feedback, which when given is always verbally and never through skill progress item in the British Swim School's app. If you challenge the owner (Cheronda A.) on this, you will be gaslighted in there being more feedback than there actually is, and that it is their policy to only give verbal feedback versus using the app for what it is intended. - You'll notice your child will have many different instructors throughout lessons, with great variety as seniority as instructors. - You're paying about $40 for a 30min session, but on avg. there are 4 kids per classes, meaning even if you round up that's $40 for 10 minutes of instruction, as in the 64 "lessons" we paid for equates to having paid $2500 for less than 11 hours of instruction. - The lessons are utterly simple snd repetitive, and not lessons at all, the same 4 simple things are just endlessly repeated without any coaching or guidance from the instructors towards the child as to what to do different or how to improve. - The final straw, when you confront them on the inadequacies listed above, they will a) gaslight you in terms of feedback cycles, but much much worse, b) blame the lack of results on your child. In summary, this school will happily take your money for providing very little, and in terms of practical outcomes are operating in opposition of their mission statement.
