I have always been active on my own and have managed to stay just fit enough to weekend warrior my way through my backpacking trips. As a woman in my early 40s, I know I need to lift weights to help with muscle mass and bone density as I age. I've tried at-home programs but always struggle with consistency, usually getting bored or injured before making any real progress. I've tried to find a gym previously but options are limited when you live and work in rural Maine. It's hard for me to justify the expense if I have to go out of my way to workout, especially if I have the equipment at home but just lack the discipline. My best friend happened across G45 by chance and we joined together in the fall. G45 differs from other facilities because only small group training sessions and personal training are offered (personal session options include fitness, diet, and lifestyle coaching). It's a relatively small space but it is well-equipped and organized. There is modern cardio equipment (stair climber, elliptical, rower, bike, treadmill), dumbbells, kettlebells, functional trainer, rack with a bar/plates, heavy bag, and fitness balls (stability, slam, medicine). Everything is in great condition and well-maintained. Coach Gary has added additional equipment in the time I've been attending which is noticed and appreciated. The facility is clean and comfortable. A changing stall and bathroom are available. There are no showers or lockers. Coach Gary is transparent with pricing and all that information is readily available on his website. You can pay to just drop in, or select a tier for how many workouts you want to attend per month, billed on a monthly basis. He schedules the following month's classes about 2 weeks in advance and you can sign up for what you want to attend easily online. It's also super easy to cancel and reschedule your group training sessions. I think the price per class, even at the drop in rate, is very reasonable and comparable to other local group fitness trainings I've attended (like yoga classes). I cannot speak to the personal training aspect of the business, but I have attended all the different training sessions that are offered. Generally speaking, all the training sessions are comprised of the same/similar exercises which is nice because I like learning how to do something and then monitoring my progress over time. It's also helpful when you can't attend your preferred class but still get to perform the exercises you were working on in another one. Where the sessions differ is in the vibe, focus, and intensity of the workouts. There are multiple stations, each with a set of exercises to be performed during a period of time. All of the G45 training sessions are scalable, so you can decide what level you workout at. What's great about G45 is Coach Gary does all the programming so I just get to show up and execute a well-rounded workout that is challenging and fun in a safe, supportive space. The workouts aren't constantly changing to the point you don't see progress, but change often enough to keep you challenged and prevent boredom. Coach Gary is professional, knowledgeable, and makes fitness approachable for all ages and abilities. He is patient and thoroughly explains how to perform all the exercises. He is always watching to make sure your form is correct and can help you modify an exercise if you're recovering from an injury or don't yet have the strength/range of motion to perform it. Coach Gary will gently challenge you to lift more weight or do more reps so you're always improving. He reminds you to celebrate ALL your wins - better range of motion and improved balance/coordination are just as important in functional fitness as your strength gains. This is training for LIFE, not just aesthetics. I love seeing the same faces week after week across multiple classes and watching the gains my peers are making in the gym. There are no unhealthy egos or competition between the members, it is you vs. you. I have seen a wide range of ages, body types, and fitness levels and I can confidently say that G45 is for everyBODY.

It's great training for anyone looking to improve or excel athletically or merely stay healthy, strong, and extend life with better quality of life. In my case it's all the above, and realistically without an accountability/anchor for this type of work, it's difficult to maintain the consistency to get results entirely on one's own. Staff are top quality people, fun to work with, and small groups make an hour of hard work as fun as working out can be. I know it's working due to performance on the field - quicker turns, surer stops, semi-chronically-injured areas like impinged shoulders getting stronger and have wider pain free range, and an annoying unneeded 10 lbs leaving my body. In my opinion everyone who can ... should ... do this kind of training whether they are athletic or not, and Shelby Trained is, now that I'm familiar with the entire program, an obvious place to do it.

I originally started training at Shelby's to improve myself as an athlete, but as of recently I have used the training as a way to stay fit and healthy. The trainers are extremely kind and knowledgeable and have continually helped me improve myself and stay healthy. I have had problems with chronic low back pain and injuries, and the trainers have helped me recover from these pains and injuries and continue to help me prevent any more injuries or pains from happening. Overall, Shelby Trained is a great place to train with really good people.

Spring through Fall there is a 4th location with additional programs and an outdoor pool. Auburn has dedicated steam rooms for men and women. Lisbon road has a heated indoor pool, large sauna and a hot tub. Classes are terrific, as are the individual trainers. Equipment and programs are up to date. Staff will never ignore you to scroll on their phones. They're always ready to give a tour for new and prospective members.

They allow toys which the kids love. Only knock on it, is that it can get crowded. The gym is a pretty large with a walking track as around it too. They have a little gym/activity area where kids can use some monkey bars and roll on activity mats. Their "basketball" gym is outdoors but is covered. It's a great for 3 seasons, but not built for winter. I have found it to be a great spot. 100 dollars a month for the entire family which I think is a great value.

But, I found out that the Casco Bay YMCA was having an open house, where you could have a 2 week membership for free AND it was only a 5 minute drive from my new digs. Cool. Upon arrival I waited patiently while the desk associate talked another customer through a lengthy list of classes and how strenuous they are. She was apologetic and allowed us to enter the gym area to start our workout, then check in with her later. I thought this was great customer service, so, thank you. The workout area was clean and not crowded. I was able to use 2 different machines and the weight room without having to wait. There is also a nice, small, indoor track to use for walking or cooling down. On the way out, the person at the desk encouraged us to join, explained the benefits, and also told us a membership there included all other surrounding YMCAs (although I thought once you joined the Y you could go anywhere in the country, so that was a bit confusing). She was very friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job, a trait which I appreciate in the customer service industry. This Y has a pool, extensive workout area, outdoor basketball courts, and a lot of weekly classes. If you are in Freeport and want a nice place to do any of these activities, I wouldn't hesitate to go here. Also check online for swim hours and other activities that are happening that day. They have family events throughout the year.

We did have a technology issue that accidentally canceled our class on their end, but our instructor was incredibly accommodating and flexible. Instead of turning us away, she made it work so we could still have our class. We really appreciated her kindness and would absolutely recommend this studio for a group class or special event!

I had many childhood memories here, back when it only had mini golf, water bumper boats, and go…read morecarts. Then they added the Sky Coaster about 25 years ago, an arcade, a ropes course, and more. The Sky Coaster is standing there, but is decommissioned permanently. The ropes course feels like it just showed up 4 years ago, but it's closed forever. No more water boats. The putt-putt has seen better days without an update. The go carts are tired and my 10 year old isn't allowed to drive one because she's 57" tall. Is anyone going to that bar/restaurant? After lots of expansions, it seems to be collapsing back to less than when it started. Needs some creative efforts to compete with everything else that can be found within 30 minutes.
