Sunday Bfast Rescue is one of the ones that started off kind of shabby and now has expanded and redone the whole place to really compete with the likes of AIDS thrift in South Philly or any thrift store found in the Lower East Side in NYC. They are easy to spot on a corner right next to Coffee Cup Cafe (hit them up for bfast first), there is always plenty of meter parking righ up front. Upon going inside you will find clearly sectioned areas for everything in your home to personal items. I think some thrifts are better known for certain things over others, I personally come here for homegoods and furniture. Most of the things are pretty dated, but in great condition and for excellent prices. This is the kind of place that if you know your way around antiques you could find a few treasures. Aside from homegoods they have plenty of clothes, sporting equipment and curtians etc. The best part is that unlike the larger Impact thrifts around where you have to wait for a special day of the week for a sale, here EVERYDAY they have a sale going on. Depending on the color of the price tag, you can take anywhere from 20-50% off! I personally found a carpet stain removing machine for $5 and tons of party decorations for pennies. They always have very friendly customer service too. Another added bonus is that they take credit cards and all your money helps to fund charity needs. Needless to say, I pop in and out to check out what new things they have, you should too.

The staff, volunteers, and clients were so hospitable--not just to me, but to everyone I observed. The genuine care and concern shown for those receiving services was so evident. The staff and regular volunteers are invested in this community. Chester is no walk in the park, and these people choose to come in every day, build relationships, pray for the community, and serve. And they serve people with dignity. Have you heard about their Hope Cafe? In addition to serving cafeteria style meals all week long, on Saturday evenings, the space is transformed into a restaurant, the guests order from a menu, and they are served just as they would be at a restaurant. The Mother-Baby program provides families from the community with necessities they may not be able to afford on their own. Moms can get diapers, formula, clothes, diaper bags, etc. There is a recovery program for men who want to be freed from their addictions, and they do community outreach delivering meals, backpacks, turkeys, and toys. Cityteam Chester does a real good job of celebrating and sharing good news through their social media page on FB. Check them out!

These people are pros at managing volunteers…read more This is not an easy task. You have to understand first what they can learn to do in a very short period of time. Then you need to make sure they're enjoying doing it. Lastly, you need it done right. It's a skill. Philabundance clearly understands this and has the entire process mastered - from check in to departure. I arrived to work with a group of colleagues from my company. The volunteers have their own parking spaces and their own sign in and waiting area. Cleverly they have these little kiosk things that allow you to use your credit card and make an instant donation that adds to a total for your group. Nice. Tables, chairs, clear lockers for storing personal goods, heavy coats along one wall for those working in the refrigerated area. We had a brief orientation where they talked about the mission of Philabundance, then we were split into two projects. I was on a project making up food boxes for elderly people in need. They reviewed what each of us did and we were off. The boxes came along a conveyer belt and we all had stations. I kept thinking of the "I Love Lucy" episode and smiled to myself. We worked a total of 3 1/2 hours with a 20 minute break halfway through. We made up our goal of boxes - 600 - and helped the other team package pints of milk in the cooler area when we were done. Group photo on the way out, and we were leaving feeling accomplished and happy. They were professional, friendly and very organized. Impressed.

They also have a great website dedicated to telling you all about their work, and publish a newsletter about the people they help. Men, women and children really have a voice, and these people really care. This is a great place to do your holiday shopping. This year because of the snow (it would have cost $100 to FedEx just before the holidays), and total lack of feeling like shopping for another craptastic gift, I opted to send my family members a note that said I gave such and such amount in your honor. Project HOME shoots you an e-mail immediately, so you can gift very quickly and easily. I think my mom was mad at first, but then she really loved it, and I bet next year I'll get something similar - instead of two pounds of See's candies... ugh. Also, they are always looking for volunteers, and have job positions open all the time!

I volunteered here as part of a University program for a year, and it was one of the most rewarding and eye-opening experiences in four years of school. You'll never meet more dedicated, warm-hearted individuals than at this place, and you'll certainly appreciate people, and everything they have to offer, a lot more after. You don't need to dump ice water on your head to make a difference here though, just maybe consider reaching out to them about food, clothing, or financial donation options next time you're feeling altruistic and want to help your community.

Especially since I have kids, I can't fit much in my car with both kids in the car so it always takes multiple trips and it's a pain. I had such a pile of boxes because I just didn't feel like making 4-5 trips. I found Purple Heart and haven't looked back. As far as the other reviews, even though they're several years old, I feel the need to respond. Why would you sit and wait? Put the stuff outside and go about your day, that's the whole point. If they have an issue, they'll get in touch. The furniture pickup review? It says right on the scheduling page that they don't accept furniture! Try reading the information about the organization and the acceptable donations before you schedule.
