I'm not sure how this is rated so highly...it is all organic so it is pretty pricey. The food is average, bordering on flavorless for the fruits and baked goods. I got the pistachio croissant, cinnamon bread, and fruit pie as well...it tasted pretty bland and not as good as something you would get at Ralph's for half the price. It tastes more like the typical mass produced baked product, and I was expecting something that tasted pretty close to homemade. The peaches were tiny and half of them were bruised so badly that they were ruined by the next day. Fruits didn't have a lot of taste. Everything else in terms of taste was pretty average and bland. In my particular case, I ordered meat and eggs as well. They left it on my porch and by 5am everything was starting to get warm, so I didn't want to risk getting food poisoning and just a refund for the beef. Very disappointed. I will continue to receive my boxes of Imperfect produce, but I will not be using Out of the Box again. read more

I've tried many CSA's and food deliveries, and this is the best. Jennifer is always responsive and on top of customer service. The variety of the food week to week is much better than your average CSA. The food is organic (with locally produced grains and cheeses, and pastured meats), and the quality of all the food is excellent. OTB saves me a lot of time running to the farmer's market, seafood store, butcher, etc so I think the price makes sense. Oh, and the recipes in the box are fantastic! ;) read more

I get a delivery every other week. I enjoy the organic produce as the mass market by me does have much in the way of organic offerings---and the store "organic" produce is as bland in taste. I would say that about 90% of the time the fruits and vegetables from this company far exceed the taste of the "organic" offerings in my market. Love the peaches, artichokes and melons. Every Tuesday morning, we cannot wait to open the front door to see OOTB box. What we love about OOTB: 1) Produce and other goodies arrive in super-clean, rigid, and securely covered containers, chilled with ice-pack inside. Newspaper guys obviously respect OOTB so much that they neatly place LA Times and WSJ on top of the box! So much easier for me to bring the single pile into the house!! 2) Every item is carefully curated by Jennifer, the brilliant founder. No potato is ordinary. Carrots are sweet and delicately fragrant. When I roasted fingering potatoes while watching an important football game on TV, my husband noticed the difference and (took the time from the game and) asked, "are these.... from the box?" 3) OOTB box arrives early in the morning, so I can put everything in the fridge while making a simple breakfast of super delicious eggs and baguette from OOTB. My husband and I finish 80-90% of the baguette right away. It's delicious!! We are in baguette heaven, feeling like back in Paris!! It is THAT good. read more

If your ordering a box and don't want to feel like you just got scammed then just be aware that what is listed under what is included in your box is really included. The website is very misleading. You think you are getting this great list of items that are clearly listed under "what's included" but half of the items say "default zero" in tiny print which means they are not included. It's on me that I didn't realize this but I'm sure I'm not the first person to get their box hoping for all this great stuff only to realize you just paid $90 bucks for about $30 dollars worth of produce. Needless to say the provisions boxes are not with the money AT ALL. read more

Horrible experience. Both orders missing essential items, no recipes delivered that had any application to the food itself. Maybe they are good for strictly meat boxes, or just delivering CSA at an overpriced rate, but for vegetarians looking for local produce with recipes, huge fail. read more

Back in July, I discovered this business online and was intrigued because they shopped at the farmer's markets in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. I decided to write them an E-mail to find out whether they delivered to Santa Barbara, in the off chance that they did. The reply I received was instantaneous. I was informed that no, they did not, but hoped to implement this in the fall. I wrote back, thanking Jennifer for her response and let her know that this service sounded like exactly what I was looking for because I'm blind and unable to drive so getting out to the farmer's market is a challenge unless I pester my friends. I signed up for the service's newsletter and created an account, but didn't think that I would be hearing much from them about expanding their service, so I bided my time and planned an exodus out of my beloved city down to L.A. I read each of the newsletters and drooled over the scrumptious meal plans and wondered if any CSA in the area would ever adopt themed, curated boxes; allow more customization; provide non homogenized milk; and sweet treats of the week. On November 30, I opened up my Inbox to find an E-mail from Jennifer stating that she had figured out how to get deliveries up to Santa Barbara, and I could finally sign up if I was at all still interested. She stated there would be a $10 delivery fee, but for the privilege of getting meat, produce, and artisanal goods from the best purveyors that the farmer's markets in L.A. and Santa Barbara have to offer, that was completely worthwhile to me, especially if it would eliminate (or at least greatly minimize) my trips to the grocery store. I was ecstatic! Since writing to her, I read books like the Dorito Effect and Pandora's Lunchbox, which spurred me to want to eat more local, sustainable, (and most importantly, flavorful) foods. I've only had one delivery so far, but I've prepared the Rainbow Chard Egg Nests (which got the stamp of approval from my boyfriend) and the Cozy Cozy Ground Beef Chili (it's already gone); devoured the apples (and I usually don't care for apples); enjoyed carrots without any hummus; nearly blew through half a gallon of milk; and have lost weight preparing my own meals! I'm looking forward to preparing the meals from the Polish themed box, and I can't wait to see what other delicious adventures I embark upon as I lose weight, eat more healthfully, and learn to cook. This is such a great find, and I'm so glad that they decided to deliver in this area. Thank you so much! read more

OOB Collective is the best! It is a tad pricey but the quality is consistently high. I get a weekly produce box that is fantastic. I can even log in to view the fruits and veggies of the week and make swaps if so desired - I think that level of tailoring is very customer-oriented and says a lot about their approach. I used to get regular blooms along with my produce box (the fresh flower delivery option, a surprise each week) but that was shut down for the winter as they couldn't guarantee good flower quality in the cooler months. Can't wait for the blooms to return. In addition the company offers 'real food' boxes which include pantry staples, spices, meats/fish (optional) etc. I haven't gotten one yet but I have added on some pantry items to my produce box. I just got my Malibu honey this morning, woo! The growers that they work with are all in CA I believe and are the best at what they do. I read some vendor bios and they definitely use the best names around. And I have new favorites (like the ridiculously good Ojai Pixies). Another feature I like is that it is incredibly simple to put your standing order on hold. You just log in and let the system know your travel dates (if you'll be away) or post-pone longer term if you're making cutbacks to your grocery budget. Very simple. Highly recommend. read more

We used to like this a lot - a tad overpriced but nice produce and convenient. As of late, however, there always seems to be a mistake in our order (as in, a missing item or an inferior item replacement). Beware as well that substitutions are not guaranteed - even though we cannot use lemons we get them most of the time. The reusable boxes are gone now as well, which were one of the reasons we switched from our previous service. They used to have nice vegetarians recipes, but these are mostly gone now as they have started to push set boxes that include everything for a meal. The meals are not to our taste, so we are looking at other delivery services now - luckily there are quite a few around. If you are looking for set-boxes with recipes and the price point works for you, I would definitely recommend it - the quality is high. For example, we had the best raspberries ever in our box, no comparison even to what you get on the farmer's market. Update: We did cancel, and the owner wrote me a very nice email and even returned the $40 sign-up fee. read more

We've been using OOB Collective for several months now. It is slightly expensive, until you think about how many grocery trips it saves you and the infinite number of extras that sneak into regular grocery trips. OOB has helped me to cook with things I would never have done otherwise (lemon cucumber, okra, sunburst squash in a brown butter sauce) and provides great recipe ideas. Until this week, we have just been getting the produce boxes with a couple of extras added in, but I just ordered our 1st Real Food Box for next week. We chose the vegetarian option since we buy our meat in bulk from a ranch, but we'll supplement our meat into their meal plan. I have been consistently happy with the quality of the items we receive from the amazing Malibu Farm honey to the burrata and all of the produce. I'm excited to use the real food boxes through the school year, to help make life a little easier. read more

One of my resolutions from last year was to get more vegetables in my family's diet. Often when preparing dinners I can get into a rut, making the same recipes with the same ingredients. Ditto for buying vegetables in the market, I kept to the same choices each week. I worried that my family was not getting a variety of nutritional vitamins and minerals from my limited choices. "Out of the Box" produce boxes are an excellent solution to the problems stated above. The weekly produce boxes (I chose 75% vegetables and 25% fruit-jumbo) offer a variety of vegetables I can now include in my family's diet. One of the best features is that you can swap any vegetables to be placed in your upcoming box for those of your preference or other items on the website (flowers, fruit, etc). This way if I have tried a new vegetable one week and felt it wasn't a hit for my family, I can prevent receiving that vegetable in another order.
