They have a descent selection of Maine beers and all the essentials that you'll need at reasonable prices. Unless you want to drive down to Burt Cove Market (also owned by the same family), The Galley is your best chance for food. The Galley was originally in the middle of Deer Isle village but moved to it's current location across from the high school in 1998. Now, Maine is not known for it's pizza, but the Galley actually makes pretty awesome pies for carry-out (make sure to call ahead). The staff is always friendly and helpful. If Donna is working the register, make sure to give her a hard time for me :)

I just couldn't bring myself to shop there, so I changed to a Hannaford's in Bangor. The original building burned down due to sheer recklessness. Blue Hill peninsula was left without a supermarket, so, in step the Lawrence family. About a year later they had built a new structure in the same place, the one that stands today. TradeWinds selection and quality of food is pretty darned good. The store is lovely, the staff are lovely, and the food quality is very good. TradeWinds may be THE best grocery store/supermarket that I've ever experienced. The owners and the employees are top notch, always very helpful and friendly. The Lawrence family prioritize community, they offer locally grown or made choices, they offer a Maine food section, and they've made this store a shining example of what is possible. Employees need daycare, provided. Employees and others need an exercise spot, provided. Need less expensive fuel for your vehicle, provided. Need a more community oriented pharmacy, they bring in Community Pharmacy! I've never witnessed such active community support in my life! Now to the difficult part. After more than two decades ownership is transitioning. Hannaford, the Maine distributor, which supplies TradeWinds, is the new owner. Hannaford's has been a good company as far as I know. But, like most changes, this is a hard for many of us. Will they continue to offer the unique products that TradeWinds has all these years? Will they keep the lower, more reasonable prices for groceries and fuel that the Lawrence family offered us? Will they allow Community Pharmacy to remain? Will the very cool Beer Cave stay, continuing to offer the amazing Maine and small brew company selections? Will the community awareness and cancer fundraising continue? I hope the answer will be a resounding YES, but we have to wait and see. Even though it's a difficult phase, I have to say thank you to the Lawrences and Hannaford, I'm glad the store has a new Maine-based owner with a decent track record. Thank you Chuck and Belinda Lawrence for all you have given us folks on the Blue Hill Peninsula over these many years! You are very appreciated. I hope you enjoy a well deserved retirement. There wasn't a TV in our room so we played cards at the dining room table! Lynae is the innkeeper and was very accessible. Our room, and the Inn in general, was very clean and well kept. There was a jar with travel needs should a guest forget something (toothpaste, comb, etc.). The shower was adequate but don't expect high water pressure; it was fine for us. We got to the Market right at 7am the next morning for some hot coffee and breakfast sandwiches. We brought our own travel mugs so the coffee was less than $1.40 each. The egg sandwiches and pastries were tasty. Two pastries, two coffees and two egg sandwiches cost just under $24. I was pleased to see they offer goods from regional B Corps, Wicked Joe coffee (Maine) and Cabot Cheese (Vermont), were two companies that caught my eye. Finally, we grabbed ready made pizza slices for the ferry ride back to the mainland. There were also some tasty looking sandwich offerings. The staff was fabulous each time we stopped in.

It's smaller than I'm used to and…read moreusually fairly crowded, but neither of these things are points against it, as it's the only grocery store on the island and therefore likely where everyone who lives there goes for their necessities. The staff were very friendly and efficient, and it was clear as I listened to people chat in line that this was an informal community hub. We got some ciders, watermelon and avocado, eggs, milk, steaks, and some cheese. Everything was fresh and well-kept and delicious except for the cheese, which tasted a bit rotted when I got it home and had to be thrown out. Unfortunate, but it happens, especially if the cheese is allowed to reach room temperature in store. I think maybe the cooling mechanism on the cheese display was losing the battle against the late-summer heat and humidity. But the watermelon was the only one I've found this season that wasn't overly ripe, the avocados were delicious, and the steaks were clearly high quality and grilled up wonderfully. Overall, it's a great little place with a staff that's clearly dedicated to the community they serve. They just need to up the refrigeration a bit on the display for their cheeses.
