My wife and I came here today just to look around and left with a puppy. This location always has the cutest puppies and the staff is mostly friendly. There is also a lot of parking and they make the adoption process super easy. If you're thinking about adding a new furry member to your family, don't go to the pet store and, instead, consider choosing the Humane Association and rescue an adorable furry friend that needs your help.

When we first came in, the employees were super friendly and told us how they work when it comes to adopting their animals. As we walked around where the dogs were kept, they seemed to be in clean areas and their cages seemed roomy so they weren't cramped up in little tight spaces. They all seemed to be taken great care of. The second time I came in, I found our new little puppy! The employees were helpful and kind in the adoption process and made it simple and quick. After filling out some papers and paying the small adoption fee to cover all her shots and puppy procedures, they gave me some coupons for her doggy stuff and it was official. I'm so glad we found out about the Nashville Humane Association and hope you'll consider checking them out if you're looking to rescue your new best friend.

I had a decent experience adopting a puppy from the Nashville Humane Association last spring. The people who worked there were nice, and it seems like all of the animals were cared for, but there were a few things I didn't love: They spay and neuter puppies at eight weeks old, or before. Specifically, my puppy was born on about January 17, 2024, and she was spayed on March 18, 2024. I adopted her on March 24, 2024, and she only weighed 7 pounds at the time of adoption. I know other humane societies in other states will let you take home your puppy and have you bring them back to be spayed or neutered for no charge, when they are old enough to have that procedure. Anything I've ever read and any veterinarian I've ever talked to, has said eight weeks is too young to have that operation done. It also made for a stressful few weeks with her, because NHA told us she had just had her operation done the week before I adopted her, and told me to ensure she didn't jump around a lot, so she didn't tear her stitches... Do you know how difficult it is to keep a 7 pound, eight week old puppy from jumping...? Secondly, while you're waiting for the paperwork to go through at the time you're adopting your new pet, they send you over to a desk to talk to somebody about pet insurance, and the options they give you are ridiculous. It's one of the most expensive insurance plans I've ever seen. I think a lot of people probably sign up for the insurance there, because it's the heat of the moment in adopting a new pet, and you want to be sure you have everything to take care of them, so I think it's a little bit of an emotional scam, that I fell for, and I'm sure a lot of other people do. Once I got home and started reading about the policy and the monthly fee and how it didn't cover much of anything, I cancelled right away. So, my advice is, definitely don't fall for that while you're getting your new buddy. pet insurance is a good thing to have, but do your research and get your own, either before or after adopting your pet. Just don't do it while you're at NHA. Lastly, and I've seen numerous other reviews from people who have had the same experience... The Nashville Humane Association will recommend you take your pet to VCA hospitals, as your vet. I can't speak for all of them, but if you live in Nashville, avoid VCA Murphy Road at all costs. You receive a free wellness visit there when you adopt from NHA, but they won't really give your pet a real exam, and then you have to go in multiple times and get charged exorbitant fees, compared to other vets in the area, for the most basic care, and then you basically have to be a vet yourself in order for your animal to actually receive care, because Murphy Road won't care for your animal. It really concerns me that NHA recommends this specific veterinary clinic, because so many people who have adopted from NHA, like me, have had miserable experiences there. I really wish NHA would establish a relationship with another vet. All in all, I think NHA does their best to care for the large amount of animals they have come in, and I believe they ensure each animal goes to a good home. The employees and volunteers there are definitely animal lovers, and want what's best for each of the animals they care for. None of my issues are with the people who work or volunteer there and take good care of these animals. I want to be clear that the people at NHA are FANTASTIC, and the animals living there are happy, healthy, and totally well taken care of. It's just some of the practices NHA has, that I think people should be made aware of before going to adopt a new member of your family. The pet insurance peddling, the age at which they spay/neuter the babies, and the recommendation for a veterinary clinic that has a history of reviews indicating they care more about their profits than they do the care of animals, is what's causing me to give NHA only three stars. As long as potential new pet owners are aware of those things, and react accordingly, I still believe NHA is a great place to adopt a pet. Clean place and friendly staff. Animals looked well taken care of and website is nice too.

I had recently lost my beloved dog and went to adopt a puppy. the puppy picked me and we went home. Less than 12 hrs later I had to return him after several arguments with staff. He stayed for over two weeks and they sent him back home w me. I had him a week and he started same symptoms. they told me to call a veterinarian because the contract I signed doesn't insure the health or behavior of the animal! I did eventually had to surrender my rights and I'm just out 200$. The director won't even speak with me over the phone.

This Humane Society in West Nashville is awesome!! I can only speak from cat side, but I have adopted from them twice, and I LOVE that the kittens and adult cats are already spayed and neutered before adoption, no exceptions. That makes things so much easier and helps reduce pet "accidents". They have different cats on special deals, and my adoption fee was $85, but that covered medical evaluation and treatments up until adoption. The staff is so friendly and helpful but leave you to browse the cages and figure out what you would like without pressure. Also, the month of June they were running specials for 2 for 1 adoptions. Adopt one kitten, get a second one free! Unfortunately my house would not accommodate two furry friends :). They have reasonable prices and even offer low cost vet services. Great location!

Stellar. I could not be more pleased with my experience at the Nashville Humane Society. The facility itself is clean, open and welcoming. The only other Humane Association shelter I've been to is the one in Pasadena, Ca where I adopted my dog and it was like the Ritz for animals. Nashville's shelter gave me a somewhat similar feeling. I had already had my heart set on adopting cats from here because I believe in the institutions mission and I wanted kittens who would be thoroughly examined, already fixed and have their shots. My boyfriend and I brought home Storm and Gambit after an hour of perusing the cat tree room and cat cages with windows looking outside. I think the best thing about this location is that you are able to take any of the kitties out of their cages for a more personal encounter. We brought Storm and Gambit in to the small visitation room at the end of the cat hall and after a few minutes we knew these 4 month old litter mates were the ones. After filling out our paperwork which took about 15 minutes, we were helped by a very friendly employee at the front desk who approved our application, got a box for the kitties and sent us on our way within 30 minutes. After 2 or 3 days we settled on Koufax for the boy (after Sandy Koufax) and Brisby for the girl (after Mrs. Brisby from The Secret of NIMH). We couldn't be more pleased with our adopted cats even if they don't know how to bury their crap up after they use the litter box. The following week NHA called us to check on the kittens and to make sure that everything was going well. Awesome!

Last month we lost our almost fifteen year old Siamese, Scout (her name is from "To Kill a Mockingbird", my favorite). She was a Humane Society rescue back in 1999. As heartbroken as we were, we knew that we gave her a good life complete with unconditional love and pure feline adoration. It took a bit, but we knew we were ready to open our hearts and home for new furbies to be worshipped and adored. So this past Friday after work, I took a trip to the Nashville Humane Society. I was on a mission. I wasn't sure if I'd find new babies, but I was ready to look. And looking is easy in the bright, airy center. All the volunteers were cleaning spaces, scooping litter boxes and lavishing all the cats with affection. They were all kind enough to offer up info about all the guys and gals that were there for adoption. I can't say enough about these kind folks. Lo and behold, Scout gave me a sign. I met a little guy aptly named Atticus. Yes, that was his shelter name and I knew that Scout must have put him there for me. At six months of age, he's still kitten enough but a big enough boy to be easily found. Kittens can be quite good at pulling a Houdini and totally disappearing from sight. I decided that this time I needed a pair. So I selected a few other kitties to introduce to him and see how things worked out. After going through a couple of others in his age range (they did not work out in the kitty visitation room), I found a large one and half year old named Jersey. I put Jersey in with Atticus and there was instant chemistry.... Not like before where there was instant hissing, but a genuine moment of peace, mutual sniffing, and some head butting. I spent another half an hour with them to make certain that this was mutual between all three of us - and it was! Sold!! I completed my paperwork, got a goody bag full of loot and their respective paperwork and then I had two new buddies. The best part was that for a St. Patrick's day special, both my new kitties were just $25 each instead of the usual $85 each. What a bargain since both come fixed and are up-to-date on their vaccines! I was so pleased that I made a donation on top of what I paid since I was getting a deal. I loaded my kitties into the car and we made the trek home. Both are doing amazingly well. I had a follow up call from the Humane Society today to follow up on how they are doing (which made me very happy that they did so). Jersey is now named Mitze Katze (which means kitty cat in German). My husband, a German National, has always named his cats this, so there was no questioning what one kitty would be called. I am proud to say that they are doing well, languishing in the sunny spot, spacing out on cat nip and being adored as all pets should be. Thanks, Nashville Humane Society, for introducing us to these two fine specimens of feline love!

I figured it was stress and anxiety from being in a new environment. However, that was not the case. by Sunday he could not keep his balance and would just lay in his bed. I come from out of town and also work for the airlines so I have travel benefits. Not to mention, I also work with a nonprofit where we transport animals from one state to another for foster and adoptions. When I told the woman at this adoption center my situation, she explained that all the animals there needed to be covered with VCA across the street for a full year. And that if I wanted to take the kitten, it would be about $900 That. Is. Insane. So we walked across the street to VCA for clarity. Not only were they shocked that we were told $900, they also seemed confused so they called the woman on the phone. Upon speaking with her, they explain to me that she will not adopt out to anyone who lives more than an hour outside of Nashville. And that the fees are $750 for 1 year of medical bills at VCA. We go back across the street a second time and ask the woman if we could get her a letter from my veterinarian explaining that the kitten would be in perfect hands and if we could please adopt her for a reasonable flat fee and take her elsewhere for care. The woman changes her story AGAIN and says that she won't adopt the kitten out because she only has 2 and wants to stay open through the weekend. That I can try another facility since it's kitten season. Are you serious? The fact that there are people like her who claim to care about the well-being of their animals, when in actuality it's just a money making business, disgust me.
