Tiber circled is no longer with us...

I brought my dog Tiber to the shelter to re-home as the website and statistics seemed to indicate a very high survival rate, e.g. near no-kill for dogs that were not aggressive and not very sick. I know the facility handles an overwhelming number of animals and has to make tough choices every day. Tiber spent about a month there before he was killed. Looking back, I should have realized he would not be able to adapt well. Coming from a loving home but being a nervous dog, simply separating from us was traumatizing enough. The noise and strange people and animals will only have exacerbated it. He was brought in because his brother, out of the blue, began attacking him. The first time, we tried to separate them and could not until the brother tired out and they quit. We tried to integrate them with training and friendly time together and they seemed fine. A few days later it happened again and this time there was blood. I separated them by moving Tiber to my elderly mother's house. It was the holidays and nobody was about. But this allowed us to heal him up where he had lacerations and bruises on his neck from the fight. Re-homing was meant to be the best option to save his life and I and my family were already heartbroken, having chosen to give him to somebody else. My daughter called the shelter to check in about a week before he was killed and was told that he was not depressed but struggling a little to socialize. I thought, I better keep tabs but sounds promising. Had her call again the following Friday and horror descended on all of us when she was informed he had been euthanized on Wednesday just a few days after our first check up call. At no point was it made clear that dogs that simply struggled to adapt would be terminated, similarly to sick dogs or aggressive dogs. I've sent a letter to the director asking that this warning be included as a policy because this was completely unnecessary. I love and loved Tiber so much and would have taken another route had I known he was likely to be put down if he had trouble coping with the shelter environment. Considering we were calling to see how he was doing, a courtesy call indicating euthanasia was imminent would have saved his life. I would have been able to re-adopt him back, keep him separated while we hired a behaviorist and trainer to work with both dogs. I only chose re-homing over training because I was worried another attack by his brother could be deadly. He would have been better off risking that than being guaranteed that after nothing but love and joy, he would be isolated, afraid, and then gone forever from this world. So be very aware...if your dog is loving and loved but doesn't really get along well in new environments or with new people and it takes a lot of time and effort to get them to warm up...they may be killed at this center rather than re-homed. And your heart will be broken too. I just hope the WCAC will take some time to review this case and improve their handling of such matters in the future. John Day

The volunteer in there was very nice and didn't seem bothered that my toddlers wanted to play with and pet all the kitties.

I understood fully that they may not communicate in a timely manner, but good lord was it a struggle to get a response. After asking me questions that were already answered in the application, I had to ask several times for any response. When I finally got one, all they said was I "wasn't a good fit", despite having extensive experience in caring for the dog I was interested in adopting. They say the dog would do best in a home with a single person, despite the foster home he is currently in having multiple people and pets in. It's like the foster home just wants to adopt him, but won't. I don't know. It's just super weird and frustrating. I feel like if I had offered a large donation I would have been approved. If you see Snooty Giggles listed as the organization, STAY AWAY!

I was lucky enough to get a tour OFSDS and this place is unlike any dog shelter I've ever seen, It's truly a sanctuary. They only cater to senior pups that we're either turned in, found, or the owner is no longer capable of caring for the dog. Every room here has a purpose; there areas for dogs who are missing limbs, blind or going blind, large outdoor areas for bigger pups, and even an indoor sensory area for dogs who are sensitive to bright lights and loud sounds. In this same sensory section is a water tank with a treadmill inside to help overweight pups get lean. They also have a huge restaurant sized kitchen, where they prepare and create food for dogs with dietary issues. I could go on forever about Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, but you really should just experience it for yourself. They are always looks for dog loving volunteers!

The initial impression over the phone with staff when they called to confirm my appointment was very friendly and accommodating. I had to reschedule due to a conflict. I believe I spoke with Jen. She was very professional and kind. I got lost on my way and I believe it was Morgan who was patient with me and guided me to their facility. Again, I'm new here and GPS wasn't exactly helpful but Morgan was. They greeted us warm and kindly. The lobby is very spacious. Gives pets room when some are already stressed out. Check in was seamless. They gathered pertinent records for Stella and got us into a room fairly quickly. The vet tech (not sure if that's the proper title) was extremely patient with my skittish yet protective pup. The vet also was patient and very informative. She addressed the vaccines that needed to be done, was very thorough in her examination of Stella and while Stella was taken in the back to have her anal glands expressed, the vet stayed with me and explained her findings, expectations and educated me so I could better understand things going forward. At no time did I feel pressure into being "upsold", as sometimes my previous vet would do. I was able to check out and pay in the room, vs going back out to the lobby and have to struggle and pay while my dog is tugging to get out of there. I received a text the next day following up on Stella, making sure there were no adverse reactions to the vaccines. That was unexpected but very much appreciated! I felt the pricing was a tad bit higher than I'm used to but I would gladly pay a little more to experience exceptional client service and know that Stella is in good hands.
