If you are looking for Dave Portnoy's favorite type of pizza....crispy and no flop this is not the place for you. I happen to love the flop. Every time I get some thing from natales I enjoy the old-school neighborhood Italian pizza place with a small dining room in the back, having very traditional neighborhood dishes. They have made some menu items low-calorie with everything on the side, so they are very accommodating and very kind. I'm not sure what's going on with Natales lately, but tonight we ordered a large pie, no sauce, with broccoli and garlic. We got no garlic, which completely affected the flavor! The broccoli and cheese were so unevenly distributed that I had to add more cheese and pick off the broccoli to add to the slices that barely had any. This has been happening a lot. They have their own parking lot they share with other businesses in that strip mall. The wood paneling meets purple formica meets fake marble would sicken even the most stoic Partridge Family member (which is Danny Bonaduce because the man simply has a huge appetite for meth, LSD, coke and fallen women). BUT, as a connosseur of such aesthetics, I feel there is a difference between "cool flower power/LSD 70's" and "grotesque suburban bad-taste 70's". This pizza place is the latter, but in such a great way that its entertaining. Time machine. I can just imagine coming here in the old days, high on some delicious quaaludes, admiring the new decor, devouring some delicious 'za, and lubing my drymouth with a pull-tab can of RC cola. A true family restaurant with the best red sauce ever. The setting of the restaurant makes you feel like you've stepped back in time about 40 years - in a good way. Only 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't offer gluten free pasta, and only dairy-containing cauliflower crust for pizza, so I basically can't order anything there. My first choice pizzeria in Berkeley Heights was a 45-50 minute wait on PICK UP (not surprised ) so we had to look elsewhere considering the time. This brought me to Natales based on their 4-star rating. Order: Broccoli Cavatelli with a side salad #4 Italian Hero Cold Sub with the works and side of fries. To start, the cold sub was about 70% bread and 30% cold cut & works. Disappointed in the portion but maybe that's what I get for not ordering pizza? As for my girlfriends pasta, maybe it sat in the aluminum container for a long time (20 min pick up) but it tasted like metal which was odd and the broccoli wasn't cooked enough. Family night out. Boy was I hungry. Awesome meal here at Natales. Started off with a slice of Sicilian and it was fresh and delicious. Along with that I had the penne vodka and it was to die for. The penne vodka has to be their best pasta dish. Highly recommend as "the dish" to try. The portion sizes are of great value here. My mom had the grilled chicken along with spinach and beans and she could not put the fork down it was so good. My dad got a custom dish of his choice with rigatoni, chicken, spinach, and sausage. I work in the area and one day I was just craving a slice of pizza. I don't really like the pizza place around the corner from my work so I was looking for something new and this one popped up on my yelp. Since then, I've been here quite a few times for lunch. I usually stop in and grab a slice of pizza and a fountain soda eat then leave. Pizza has always been better than others I've tried in the area. This is about 10-15 minutes out of my way at work but it's always worth the travel! I did get a Baked Ziti dinner twice from here. Nothing to write home about but it also wasn't bad. Huge portion (big enough for 3 lunches!) and you also get a salad and a giant portion of bread. This was our first visit for dinner and it will not be our last! There were four in our party and we started with two shared appetizers. We had the tomatoes, mozzarella and basil which was absolutely delicious!!! More than enough to share. The salads that came with the meal was much more than the usual side salads. We also had the mussels. A very generous pietism with just the right amount of spice. Our entrees included the stuffed chicken Marsala which was phenomenal and huge portions. The Chicken alla Louise had tender shrimp and chicken and again huge portion. The pasta aka vodka was the same. Delicious and large portions. The veal special with eggplant, ham and mozzarella had just the right amount of saltiness. Both couples had a side order of meatballs which were gigantic!!! There was so much food that we all had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Of course we saved room for dessert which included the Cheesecake, cannoli and Tartufo (unbelievably delicious). And the perfect ending was a full bodied cup of smooth coffee. We ate so much (with tons of leftovers) that we could barely roll ourselves out the door. Although the restaurant was absolutely packed (Saturday night) it was not overly loud. The service, too, was top notch!!! And if all that was enough, the prices are way beyond fair. Although this place is about 30 minutes from our home, it will definitely be a regular place for us to enjoy a delicious very reasonably priced meal. I enjoyed it because it wasn't covered in pools of grease or overly salty like some pizza. I would consider buying from here again.
