This is one of the best kept secrets in Loudoun County. This is a phenomenal place all the way at the end of Loudoun County Parkway and has numerous walking trails and activities for kids and adults. It would be a nice place to visit if there was more to see, that admission is not so ridiculously high, and the grounds were better kept. We really felt that we're offsetting owners' costs by helping them get a tax break in addition to the shamefully expensive entry fee for tickets for an art festival that was, sadly, not really a festival. Probably less than 10 vendors and only 2 food trucks. No music. No party- or festival-like atmosphere. It just felt like we were walking the grounds of some wealthy people who charged us a ridiculous amount to be there for an hour or two. Bathrooms are in portable trailer, so if you're not a fan of portables, you'll want to hold your bladder. Their 250-year old house of which there was much pride sounded more interesting than the gardens, and a tour of that would have made the visit slightly more of a value. But like others have said, if this was run as a non-profit organization, it may have made the high entrance fees slightly more easy to swallow. I can't see their current business model being a successful one unless only very wealthy people take an interest in visiting, financing, and renting their facilities. They have taken landfill & turned it into a pretty place, but for the average family, it's too expensive and not sufficiently entertaining or educational to make a trek out to visit really worthwhile. BLUF: Skip it unless they put some amazing work into the property, reduce entrance fees significantly, and let the public visit more often. read more

It's beautiful for sure. Well done but the prices are outrageous!! Be warned It was pretty but $35/person for anyone over 1 year is outrageous! And $45 if you want to climb the mountain . We literally paid $200 to walk around as a family of 4 with two kids in a double stroller. I wish they would reconsider their fees because otherwise that was a one and done. And trying to find a restroom is a where is Waldo situation. read more

This place is not worth the time or the money. I bought tickets for this month's event (fig themed, though you could have fooled me) with high hopes for something interesting to do with the family. At $30/person, the price of entry is very steep, especially as there are no discounts for kids. Along with fees of $3.85 per ticket (which I printed out myself at home), I spent over $135 for my family of four. We were there for about an hour, and that felt like stretching it. It feels like they are coasting on the name of "National Botanic Garden" and making it sound like it's something more or fancier than it is. You're better off heading to the National Arboretum or the United States Botanic Garden in D.C., and both of those are free. The place is still obviously under construction, massive spools of conduit and piping and such around the place. The Castle is closed as it isn't finished being built. Signposting is inadequate, starting at the main road and leaving several visitors confused about how to enter the grounds and trying to exit from a one-way entrance. Once inside you're left to follow random signs or download an online map. There are some buildings and patio areas which are nicely done, but there was nothing there. In the stone barn there were a few tables set up as vending stations, but there were only 2-3 there... one selling drinks (and snacks?), and another selling paintings. Given this is a special monthly event, I expected more vendors or something interesting. Much of the garden area did not seem to be very well maintained outside of the hardscaping. There are very few signs pointing out anything interesting about the plants. It's early September and while I understand we're heading into Fall, there wasn't anything there that was either late blooming, or wildflower-y or giving much visual interest. The Kyoto area with its bamboo grove is nice, and the Hobbit styled areas are nice, but after you've spent about 5 minutes at each, that's it. I will not ever return, and I will not recommend this place to anyone. In fact, I may go out of my way to warn anyone I know against going to this place. I feel resentful that I was charged $34/person for an unfinished botanic garden that had little of interest to offer. I can get a better walk for free if I go to any number of area hikes, and I can get more entertainment value by going to the Maryland Renaissance Festival or Cox Farms or any number of things. read more

This place was so fun and unique and like no other botanic garden I've ever been to! There are so many different areas to explore, including two small islands, a bamboo trail, and the best part was definitely the little hobbit house area (you can actually go in one of the hobbit houses!). This was a really fun area to walk around as a date. There were also a bunch of picnic tables if you wanted to bring food which would be really nice as well. read more

We spent 3-4 incredible hours here at the gardens today and were just blown away by all the beauty of this place both naturally and creatively. We spent some time speaking to the owners who sold delicious fruit grown on the grounds and found out this has been their labor of love creating everything you see! We were amazed by all the buildings and landscaping they've finished and that are still being created from initial vision into reality. The Kyoto bamboo garden area is absolute genius, I could spend everyday sitting in that peaceful place if I could. And if you are a Tolkien fan like I am you will appreciate touring Hobbiton without traveling all the way to New Zealand. What a gem to have here near Ashburn! We look forward to more event weekends to have another picnic by the lake and revisit all the lovely nature we saw today. read more

I visited this garden for the first time in June 2024 and I was pleasantly surprised. I think there are way too many negative comments on yelp for this garden that is not deserved nor all accurate. I think often people have way too high of expectations and no open mind to the massive work of art that is in progress at this place. If you are looking for a unique place to visit that is calm and peaceful for the soul then this place is worth a return visit. It's a family run place and during my visit the garden was well maintained. What I most liked about this place was that it was so big it would be impossible to see it all on one visit. Every turn had a small surprise that was intentionally created and put there. It was a beautiful day when we went and we saw alot of families who had brought their own picnic food and were enjoying the lake. It's not an amusement park so no you won't have restaurants and vending machines. Only small snack options in one location. Its very possible if this park makes it to the national parks service as the owners intend then it will get some fancy food options probably. read more

Went today and it was definitely not worth the admission price. A few interesting things to see but it seems to be an unfinished and still under construction. I think would be very disappointing for kids. They are building a castle but it's closed. They have a "boat house" with a lone, unusable paddleboat next to it. Was also disappointing for adults. The website says the owners want to educate people about environmentally sound gardening but there wasn't a single thing to read about or to learn. No signs identifying any of the plants or why they were chosen. They do have nice picnic areas and a pretty lake. I have a funny feeling that the owners have classified this as an "agrotourism" site just to save on property taxes. They are only open a few weeks a year so check the website before going. read more

This place is a treasure ! It is an oasis of calm and beautiful vistas in a natural setting. It supports an abundance of nature and It definitely has merit Botanically speaking with native plants, trees, pollinators and a wonderful example of xerophytic gardens which are drought tolerant. They had a sea of gentle bluets ( Houstonia) blooming this spring, an explosion of daffodils , Blue bells ( Mertensia) and more in the spring. The Bamboo grove is peaceful with a gentle waterfall for folks to enjoy in a serene setting. The Hobbit village and sculpture gardens are whimsical and so creative. Art and Nature intertwine here in these gardens. There is so much potential here. With much of Northern Virginia under development and the loss of so many trees, these gardens will be the future for outdoor experiences in nature. Do visit these gardens seasonally since the natural settings will change with each season. The fall colors were spectacular . There is a large event space for picnics, corporate events and weddings.
