Four stars for now. We will now see how well the shrubs thrive that we bought here. Definitely the premier nursery in Northern Virginia, even if it is a long hike for us to get up here. Merrifield Garden Center has a plush abundance of indoor and outdoor plants. We came here looking for evergreen flowering shrubs to replace the gradually and painfully dying shrubs in the beds in front of our house. We looked around their inventory to get an idea of what Merrifield had available. When we were satisfied we were ready to ask questions, a gal nearby appeared and asked if we had any questions. We did, and she answered thoroughly. She also recommended what potting soil to use. There's also a little open air stand out in the shrub section with somebody there available to provide assistance. We settled on several Caventine Andromedas and one Camellia Londontowne Blush. Keeping my fingers crossed that these babies do well in our not the best in the world clay soil. By the way, we also checked out Lowe's and Home Depot to see if they had anything comparable, and they did not. read more

All the plants recommended were wrong for the space, some arrived already dead, and even the mulch they used gave problems afterwards. Also, they were incredibly expensive. The landscaping services at this location are NOT WORTH the money. I'm still trying to recover my garden after a year. Also, their warranty is 6 months, which barely covers 2 seasons, instead of 12 months which is standard for other businesses in the area. I know understand why. read more

I don't know what is wrong with the people working the cash registers or by the cash registers. 2 weeks ago, I went in and tried to get some assistance with a large 50k job I need done (planting, water features, lighting, paving, trellis, etc.) and the middle aged Caucasian woman chatting with the cash register worker told me to "get a designer" and after 2 sentences from me that "I told her more than she needed to hear." She didn't even want to talk to me. Well, turns out you are right. I did tell you too much because I am now working with another garden center and designer because of you. Today, I went in for some plants and needed to sit down due to an injury on my knee and one young cash register woman gave another a look like I was being a burden. My bill was 1k. Don't expect me to come back after 16 years of me being a good customer. read more

Of course I love MGC! I came here on a mission to get a rattle snake plant because the MGC near me was sold out, waaaaahhhhh lol, but the bright side to that was I got to visit this location. Yes, I'm not only a human mama & a fur mama but a plant mama too! So... of course I did a wee bit of shopping hahaha. This location is bigger but that doesn't mean better, just offers some different selections, which is nice. Got my baby, got it a pot, some new gardening gloves (they actually sell nice ones that fit my small hands), got a beautiful handmade bracelet & got a new pot for my son's Bonsai. All in all a good haul considering the heavens opened up & dumped a tidal wave of rain; this is the ONLY reason I didn't get any outdoor plants or goodies. Knowledgeable, friendly service! We got some philodendron (climbing indoor vines) from the Merrifield near Merrifield VA, and over time white worm started to appear and affect the health of our plant. We stopped by this branch (which by the way is much bigger!) to buy a new indoor plant. We were able to easily find someone who gave us excellent, expert advice on what to do. We followed her recommendation and bought some insecticide that we would spread over the soil and water it down (easy application!). We came home with a new philodendron and a bottle of the magical insecticide! read more

Orchid search- I really like Merrifield as a whole (all 3 locations). This past trip I was pleasantly surprised to find some different orchids besides phals. If you're looking for oncidium, zygo, or multinia- they had some. I have seen paphs at Gainesville. No such luck on cattleya or vanda. Overall for other houseplants it's been hit or miss. Some of the ones I've gotten haven't lasted and I'm not sure if that's me or the plant being shocked from a supplier to me. Some items seemed a little high in price. And others have been reasonably priced. So overall I'd say they are average pricing. They have a large selection of terra cotta if you're looking for various sizes. This past time they even had long stranded New Zealand spag moss. They have a rotating selection of Hoya (Gainesville has had the best selection when I've gone. Overal there is a lot more space at this location, so makes sense). read more

--We bought and paid for a tree, and found out they sold it to someone else when we called to schedule delivery!-- We purchased a tree for a special occasion and paid for the tree and delivery upfront. However, when we called to schedule delivery and planting, we were informed that Merrified had put our tree back out on the lot and sold it to someone else! Yes, we paid upfront, saw them tag the tree with our name, were told they would hold it for us and take good care of it, and had talked to the staff in detail about the delivery timeframe which was even written on the receipt and circled. This was particularly disappointing because we had spent hours looking through the trees and had finally found the one that we wanted. Merrifield took our hand-selected tree that we had already purchased, and then sold it again to someone else without even the courtesy of a phone call or contacting us. During this ordeal, we had a glimmer of hope when they said they had found "our tree"! But this was soon to be squashed as they had just picked another tree and stuck our name on it. No, Merrified: Each tree is unique and has its own character, and you can't sell the same tree to multiple people and then just replace them with another tree that happens to still be on the lot. We picked Merrifield because we thought we would get a great product and professional service. Unfortunately, Merrifield does have the premium prices, but is severely lacking when it comes to customer service. We won't be returning to Merrifield after this unnecessary and extremely disappointing experience. read more

This stores communication is a mess. A couple weeks ago I set up a planting with one of the cashiers for some bushes. Picking out the bushes was great, the staff in the trees was very friendly and helpful, that is, after we found them. Maybe everyone was on a lunch break but staff was very scarce. Same issue with the cashiers, there was a long line but only two very busy cashiers. With the pricing on the plants surely they can afford to hire more people. Eventually we got to someone, and they seemed very confused the whole time, constantly asking for help from the other cashier, who was busy with a customer. It took almost 30 minutes for the paperwork. The whole time the second cashier seemed very upset and rude towards the cashier helping us. I came back a couple days later, after some consideration, needing to reschedule. Neither of the cashiers could find my delivery information. They spent another 30 minutes trying to get help from other employees on the radios. I spent an hour standing around just waiting impatiently while they FIND my paperwork. When they did, the cashier named Laura was very passive aggressive towards me while changing the date of the delivery. I'm very disappointed with the staff and their attitudes. I'm a little upset that I wasted so much time ordering plants online, but I guess there was a pandemic so I'll cut myself some slack. This place is absolutely gorgeous. I just moved to the Fairfax area and randomly decided I needed a bird of paradise. Quick yelp and I found this place and headed out with the fam. Lots of parking and easy to get to. So many plants and paths to take to even more plants, it was a bit overwhelming at first. Everything is so neat and organized that I just enjoyed wandering the aisles inside and out. The butterflies and bees outside were fun to watch with the kids. I found myself a bird of paradise, and couldn't help picking up quite a few more little one's along the way. Each plant comes with a little label with some simple care instructions which was super helpful to get me started once I settled them in at home. My son says this is the best "plant shop" we've ever been to, and I agree :) read more

Worked with Michael this time to buy three(3) trees. Just as always, the tree specialists are extremely helpful and knowledgable. 5/5 ----------- When it came to delivery, similar to the past few times, a complete failure. 1/5 The instruction was to deliver all three(3) trees. I will receive the trees and direct the crew to where the tree will be placed in my yard. The deliverer came to the house with one(1) tree. There are clearly 3 trees on there with clearly written out delivery instruction, but yet 1 is being deliver. So I called the store to let them know about the mistake. The gentleman on the receiving team was very helpful (5/5). The store located my 2 other trees and a second delivery came out the same day a few hours later. The second delivery came. 1 of the bigger tree is going to the backyard, so they needed those special push wheel barrel to move larger tree. They didn't have that tool in the delivery truck. The driver said he forgot the tool. So the tree ended up being left in the front of the house right next to the delivery truck. It's as if the delivering team is intentionally going out of their way to cause damage to a great business. read more

Pretty awesome place that has all your gardening needs. They have indoor plants as well so we picked up a dracanea plant to add some green on my living room. It was probably the most expensive plant I've ever bought but it was tall and healthy looking. We also bought a ruby spice plant and butterfly bush. Lots of other plants, trees, and shrubs they carry. The employees were helpful but sometimes hard to locate esp the ones in the indoor plant section. The one thing I don't understand is why they wouldn't put in identifying plant tags (& location found on site) for each of the lovely perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, ground covers, etc in the various mature gardens at and along the entrance and within. It's special to be able to see the greenery in their more mature size. Seems like a lost opportunity. read more

Visited here for the first time today and LOVE it!!!!! It's 30min drive from where I live but was so worth extra drive! There are so many beautiful healthy plants to chose from!!!! They also have realistic looking faux flowers/stems, all kinds of goodies and cute planters as well!!! I LOVE creative co-op(brand name) planters and they have a lot of them! I'm now regretting that I didn't get a footed planter I saw and need to go back! :) I bought jade plant, maiden hair fern, Dwarf umbrella and 3 planters! I want zz plants and snake plants next time! I cannot believe this was my first time visiting ever. My friend wanted to go and look for plants and I actually wanted to get something to help attract butterflies. This place is much bigger than it appears when you drive past. Such a vast selection of plants and everything they had out looked healthy and cared for. We got some terrific help from the staff as well who was able to help me find some plants that might be resistant to deer. This is probably my favorite garden center in the area! They always have some cool plants but they've been raising their prices a lot recently. I think the price of indoor plants just really skyrocketed dueing COVID-19 but I can't get myself to buy a 4" neon for $25. Even if they're very pretty! I still got a a very nice and full snow queen for $6.99 which I was very happy with. They also have a nice collection of pretty pots- lots to choose from! The staff was also very friendly but I did ask for help to get one of the hanging baskets because I couldn't reach it but the lady never came back and I saw her helping another customer. Oh well! Saved me some money because I ended up not getting it. Still worth going in and taking a look at the pretty plants! read more

The ground are gorgeous and the selection available is so extensive. Even on a crowded Sunday, there was plenty of space to navigate and look around. The greenhouse was the biggest I've seen and I'll definitely be back to look for more house plants as today's mission was looking for a planter pot. The big ones are located outside in the courtyard and the smaller ones are in the green house. The only reason I'm leaving two stars off is due to one of the staff members being so rude to his co worker. Noah was belittling one of the girls. She asked when the manager was coming because we had to wait on a price check. She was concerned about us waiting so long and he kept replying condescendingly. She apologized to us for the wait and we told Noah not to speak to a lady like that. His response was to roll his eyes. Being an asshole is unnecessary but also doing it in front of customer?? Best Christmas Trees at Merrifield Garden Center in Fairfax. Went to 4 places today, found trees that were small, terribly dry and brittle and ridiculously expensive. Found the best selection of the freshest trees, the NICEST people and surprisingly good prices at Merrifield Garden Center, near Costco. Picking out a tree is a family tradition, and it's special for us -- most of the places could not care if we bought or not, and no one except the folks at Merrifield were willing to spend more than a minute helping us find a tree. Worst of all was the stand in Centreville at the PO/Trader Joe's Rt 28 and 29. Don't waste your time unless you want to buy a tree as kindling for the fireplace. The landscaper in charge of our project was incompetent. Plants were put in that could not tolerate the sun. When I asked for advice when the plant did not thrive, she either didn't respond or was rude. Her emails to me were not even full sentences, just off hand remarks. The whole process from trying to arrange a visit to attempting to remedy my problem was difficult, bordering on disrespectful. When I sent the pictures that were requested, she said she didn't receive them when in fact I CCed them to myself so I know for a fact that they went through. Never again. Merrifield is expensive and simply not worth the money. read more

My husband and I visited on a week day recently when it was not busy. There were many employees walking around but we were invisible to them. One guy who worked in the annuals section was very helpful. We came to buy large terra cotta pots. Merrifield usually has a large selection. I've bought the same style of pot there many times over the decades. There was no help to be had anywhere in that area despite seeing numerous employees walking by. They also have pots in multiple areas which you have to wander around to find. The outside area with pots was a bit of a mess. No one ever helped but when we came back inside to finish our shopping and pay we were followed around as if we were shoplifting. We have used Merrifield for decades and this was beyond bad customer service. This is the second bad experience at Merrifield. Last year we visited planning to buy foundation plants. We knew they would have something that would work. The person who "helped" us was rude and seemed to be bothered that we asked about natives. Never in the last 30 or so years that we've shopped there had we dealt with anything like that day. It was also not busy that day. Between that and the prices, they've lost our business. We always tried to go to Merrifield when we needed large orders or bigger items as we've wanted to support their business. We want to support a brick and mortar stores. We went down the road to Betty's Azalea Ranch and found pots we liked and the plants on our list. Bettys isn't anywhere nearly as big but the people there were nicer. Merrifield isn't worth it anymore. This review is looking pretty epic! Nice! read more
