I live in the neighborhood and have been shopping here for years. The other day the couple in front of me was taking a really long time to check out so I picked up a couple of items as I was waiting for the sale table. This included one bottle of gummy vitamins/ sale @ $9.99. When I went to eat one this morning they were beyond expired/actually turned and rancid. The expiration date on the bottle states: 1/26. I understand that on sale items are usually nearing their expiration date, however these Gummies were absolutely not edible, texture wise etc. even the smell of the container was unmistakably no good. I didn't think it would be a problem I brought back my receipt tonight with the bottle of Gummies. The clerk had a woman named Hannah assist me. As she approached it seemed like she could not wait to get her response out as I told her that understandably the item was on sale and nearing its expiration date but these were actually rancid and completely turned. She didn't skip a beat in saying condescendingly & with a sing song reply: "yeahhh, when items are on sale, we don't do rerurns on them.. sorrrrryyyy.." I was surprised because they are selling to what would've been and has been a loyal local customer an inedible product that is beyond it's sell date (& this isn't grocery outlet). To me that's the equivalent of stealing my hard earned $9.99. My reply was: " that's kind of a rough thing to do to your customers.." as I noticed a few more bottles of the exact same product on the sale table behind me. Unfortunately after spending $140 the other day including this item, I will never be back to this location and they have lost a customer for good. It seems an exception could've been made I even asked her to open the container and smell it but she had no interest other than her pre-prepared response. gross & lame. read more

I'm tired of going to New Seasons and not seeing "organic " produce. Here is where to find it.

I don't know what's up with this store but I've experienced disparate, more negative treatment here than my lighter complexioned girlfriend (we are both Black). When we went to visit a few weeks back for some grocery items for a picnic date, we had an employee repeatedly stare at us, frown her face, audibly shrug, and follow us around multiple aisles [at that point, we honestly felt that we were being racially profiled because we witnessed this same employee show customer service (smiling, asking them if they needed help, etc.) to white patrons]. Multiple times, she helped others in front of us then made an effort to walk past us and roll her eyes. At checkout, the cashier was a man and repeatedly smiled at my girlfriend but when I made eye contact with him, he averted his eyes and looked smug. I didn't want to gaslight myself so I asked my girlfriend if she noticed and she informed me that she did and that we should find another grocer or only patronize via online pick-up order. I agreed but, at this point, I'll go back and you'll see me and be uncomfortable and forced to provide basic customer service (check my items out and answer my grocery questions). *Expressing racist sentiments doesn't change who I am or my confidence in the skin I'm in and the people I come from and surely doesn't erase Black joy, Black love, and the originality of Black culture that is frequently poorly appropriated.* I understand Oregon is a very white state in terms of racial demographics but I still find this treatment deeply unsettling given that we are in an area that once had a more sustained Black population that has since dwindled in the past 10-15 years because of gentrification. Gentrification and then continued profiling of the Black people who remain in or are new to the area is insidious and weird. *Racism on MLK Jr Blvd (where the store is located) is a special kind of irony hallmark of gentrification.* As for the store's selection, it's decent and reminiscent of a Sprout's grocery store that you'd find in other states. I was leaning toward putting one star because of the treatment here and put a second because of the produce selection. read more

Great organic produce and a clean store. I have had 2 experiences of being overcharged by a cashier who enters the wrong code for vegetables. Check your receipts. Security guard is another issue. They appear at front like clockwork every time I'm there. They even stared me down regularly. No clue what's up. read more

Blown away! This store is spotless and has the largest wellness and beauty area of any grocery store I've seen! Every category has dozens of choices. Lots of hair products, essential oils, homeopathic remedies, herbals, sunscreen, vitamins, natural cleaning products, protein powders - it's all there in spades! Make-up and moisturizers from companies appropriately named Mad Hippie and Wild Chick, with testers available so you can try before you buy. This is not your typical hippie co-op! It's a scrubbed, cleaned-up version where everything is stylishly displayed and presented. Love. As such, Kombucha is offered everywhere! There is a fill your growler area, a first for me. And a refrigerator filled with many varieties at the end of the impulse aisle along with healthy snacks (protein bars, dark chocolate), stress balms, and cookbooks. Every item aligned to their corporate mission statement. No Snicker Bars or DingDongs in this store! The grocery section does not have the breadth within categories, but they certainly have whatever you need. Smaller produce section than some of the traditional chains, but all the basics are available - onions, potatoes, carrots, peppers, greens, apples, garlic, yams, etc - and they are fresh, organic and beautiful. Love how the nuts and bulk flours are housed in a refrigerated section, which is how I store mine to prevent it from going rancid. Several items had In Store Special pricing like 16oz cinnamon glazed almonds for $5.29, a great price. The meat area is well represented, again, not huge, but locally sourced meats of many varieties - chicken, pork, beef. I enjoyed perusing the frozen and pantry sections checking out a plethora of brands I've never seen before. They even have a small wine, beer and hard cider area. This store is not in my neighborhood but it's across from a salon I visit frequently. So while I may not do my weekly shopping here, I will make a point to stop in when in the area. The entire experience was a pleasure from when I entered the parking lot and scored a spot by the door since they have reserved spaces for Low-Emitting and Fuel Efficient Vehicles, so Portlandia! Outstanding customer service, fresh produce and an amazing skin care section makes NG a go-to for me. I'm reminded of my childhood co-op with NG, except NG is clean, bright and professional. There are interesting items to explore, especially in the soaps, body oils and candles area. For some reason, the eggs here are especially excellent. The prices are reasonable and the quality of products matches other, more expensive stores. Right now, COVID 19 is keeping me away, but I'm hopeful to eventually return to my Friday evening stop for veggies, eggs and a few special items that I can only find here. read more

Bad store in so many ways. The lack of friendliness and unwillingness to be of assistance to customers is shocking. Today, I was next in line, as I walked up the cashier, he promptly walked away without a word. I waited for his return for 5 min. The other cashier could clearly see the problem I was having but would not call me over to her till to be wrung up. I mentioned to her the problem and her reply was, " well we don't know what might have been wrong, maybe he was sick". But NO offer to ring me up!! She continued to ring others up behind me. I finally took my few items to her register. She was beyond rude to me, accusing me of throwing my box on the counter etc. would not assist with pin pad that don't work well at all when adding your phone number - definitely my fault. 1. Policy is you may only return 2 items from any given receipt. 2. Very disappointed. I've shopped here 3-5 times a week for years and never had to return something. Earlier this week I bought multiple spices that did not add up to more than $16ish but the cashier Edw**a had to refuse to return more than 2 items (per tiny paper policy tapped on the cash wrap that she pointed out and acknowledged how nobody reads anything up there though") what gets more disappointing is that when I said (to my grocer I see at least once a week on her shift) well that's disappointing and makes me not wanna shop here anymore i mean it's not expensive stuff it's just 5 different spices i can't use with my blood type apparently. Anyways, People make accidental purchases or change their mind. She says "well that's your prerogative" Excuse me? Yes I know that thank you very much. I said Edw**a when a customer says something like that it's not a personal attack on you, it's the customer asking you to relay the message to someone on management who can reconsider the policy. I like to shop at naturals at not more corporate stores - but if the corporate store is where I get treated more human/humane.... Natural grocers is like Whole Foods/new seasons but without the ridiculous price points those stores charge. That being said I'm sure not everything is the least expensive it can be but I appreciate their selection of vegetarian/vegan/dietary options without costing a fortune. The store is always clean and the people working are kind and the overall vibe is very relaxed. they also have a wide variety of supplements and artisan bath/skin/beauty products. they are a no bag store so make sure to bring your own. If you're in a pinch they offer cardboard boxes or reusable bags for purchase. 10/10 for me ! read more

This store opened up across from the fitness center I was going to pre-Covid. I started going there and have been going back ever since. I find what I need, and things I want. It's great having a store with supplements n staff who are knowledgeable--if they don't no they will look for answer. I really like their lower prices (than other grocery stores), and the quality is always excellent; they are expanding their fresh vegetables. I especially like their grains and nuts section, again much cheaper than other stores. The staff are helpful and friendly. I think they have good support in the store as well. Don't know if anyone remembers that this lot used to be empty and it was debated that it was going to become a Trader Joe's or housing for low income people. Instead it became a Natural Grocers, which is always empty. I don't know if it's the design/layout of this store but it feels like scarcity, it doesn't inspire me to want to buy much or anything as I never feel like I find the products I fully want, and those I do are very overpriced. Their coupon system often doesn't work and so often I have issues with their staff. I walked up to the register and was told after being waved over and the cashier just walked away without saying anything. Waited, with a lot of confusion and after I was all rung up I asked about why my coupon didn't apply and she had to rescan every single item and then made me sign something just so it would register. I asked when the eggs would come back in since every time I go in the eggs I like are not there and she didn't know when they would restock them. I feel like every time I come here I'm disappointed and I will no longer shop here. read more

This is my favorite grocery store. They do not sell inorganic produce/ products. Everything is organic and they even do not sell "organic" produce coated with chemical products either. The worst store! I have been meaning to write a detailed negative review of Natural Grocers, one of the closest stores to my house in the Sabin neighborhood. Wish there was a different store here. Here are the issues with the store -Tiny meat selection, huge prices in this department, huge supplement selection which i dont care about -The produce bags are almost impossible to open. Ive been so frustrated I've actually purchased less fresh food trying to open the green compostible bags -As you are in the checkout line you are put through the gauntlet like a Wal Mart of impulse purchases next to you in a long aisle shelf -Pretty much required to register for their loyalty card which is annoying -Their card payment machines can't multitask to get your pin entered as the cashier is running the transaction. Have to wait till the end then put your pin in and complete the sale. -No ice for sale. Given the large footprint of the store this seems like an obvious thing to offer -Love that they don't offer bags (except reusable ones to purchase). It's super convenient for me to load up several odd shaped small cardboard boxes with groceries, carry them home stacked in front of me crossing MLK, then have to recycle the boxes myself. And they make the sustainability excuse here. Nice staff though and easy place to duck into and buy the essentials, and stock up on boxes :) read more

Imagine if your local hippy co-op decided to take a shower and get serious about running a business instead of being a cesspool of ego and virtue signalling. And they really liked vitamins. Okay, maybe that's not super illuminating, but I sure liked typing it. Stupid hippy co-ops. ANYWAY, Natural Grocers. Well, it really is like a grown up hippy co-op. They've got a decent spread of items that are all slightly more healthy or animal/environment friendly than what you find in a corporate grocery store. You could conceivably do your primary grocery shopping here. The breadth of selection means that any each area might not be as deep as it might be in a larger store, especially since a large portion of the floor space is in fact dedicated to vitamins and supplements. For instance, there's no meat counter and the produce section is on the small side. The frozen and ready to go selections are larger than you might expect. I've visited the store maybe a half dozen times and I haven't closely examined even half of those sections. The vitamins and supplements, tho. Holy cow there's tons of stuff here and they're definitely cheaper than New Whole Seasons Foods. The checkout is slightly hard to navigate and they don't have any kind of bags. You have to bring your own or buy one but they usually have a selection of boxes you can grab from. All in all, this is a great addition to the neighborhood. Even if they carry far too much kombucha. I've shopped at many health stores and this is my absolute favorite! The employees are all super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Some of the staff including the manager even know me by name. The store is very clean and well stocked. They carry a full array of products including organic produce, meats, pet food, body care and more. They package most of their own bulk items saving their customers the inconvenience of dealing with bulk bins. I'm able to purchase all of the brands I prefer at one location and prices are very competitive. For me, this place is everything an organic store should be! read more

Love having this Natural Grocers in my neighborhood. I've been a handful of times since they opened a few months ago, and I've pretty much always found what I was looking for. One thing I always try to buy is eggs because they have good quality organic eggs for $1.99 a dozen, when you sign up for their member program (which is free). And their avocados are always $.99 each, which is a better deal than most of the other grocery stores. Also, the produce section may be on the smaller side compared to New Seasons or Whole Foods, but the quality is really good. They don't really have a meat section, except a few items in the frozen foods area, but they have a good selection of dry goods (nuts, different types of flours and spices) as well as a huge supplement section. They also have a great selection of Zevia and LaCroix flavors, which I love, since I've given up diet drinks and switched to those. This place may not be for everyone, but I love it, and I think it's a great addition to the neighborhood. read more

They need to TAKE COVID seriously - most of the STAFF are NOT social distancing! And when asked politely to do so (every time I shop, and multiple staff, including the Security Guard who had to be asked twice) and they give an ATTITUDE - are you kidding?? Only offer one bottle of hand sanitizer (sometimes not even that) in the whole store. Everyone has to touch the bottle as its not an auto dispenser. Surprisingly large store with a good selection of organic produce, as well as vitamins and supplements, cereals, cleaning products, frozen items. Reminds me quite a bit of Market of Choice, though the latter has quite a bit larger selection. I love having Natural Grocers in my neighborhood. I've stopped shopping at New Seasons and now do my weekly shopping at Natural Grocers. The produce is all organic, the prices are much lower than New Seasons, and the quality is exceptional. I had heard that Natural Grocers doesn't have meat, but that's not true -- they have 100% grass fed beef and Mary's Organic Chicken. They also have sausages, bacon, etc. I recently tried some of their frozen fish -- which is from Orca Bay Seafoods in WA -- and it was very good. I typically don't buy frozen fish, but this fish was exceptional. It was more flavorful than the fresh fish that I've bought at New Seasons. read more

I stopped in Natural Grocers with my roommates from the Mango Mansion while we were waiting for our order to be done at Wingstop. It's a chill grocery store. I got a nice kombucha but noticed while in the beverage section that they had every flavor of guayaki yerba mate except for enlightenment. On the way out i mentioned to the very chill and friendly checker that it was my first time in the store. Then he gave me a free reusable bag. This place is dope. Way chiller than new seasons. This is a wonderful grocery store and it is weaning me off of Whole Foods. I have been happy with everything I have purchased here, especially the walnuts and quinoa and olives. First time visiting, and right away this location stands out from Tigard and Beaverton. I was greeted and was made to feel welcomed. Staff were helpful and they had everything I was looking for. Being from Colorado, where NG originated, I was so pleased to see this just down the street in my new Portland neighborhood. I always always get my produce from Natural Grocers. You just can mindlessly pluck things knowing they are going to be fresh and organic. I also appreciate the prepared foods section and cold drinks as this is my go to for healthy quick meals. I don't spend a lot of money in the Frozen section but I do know it is quite extensive. If you have little niche or specialty products (looking at you nutritional yeast and siete foods) that are staples in your home, NG is likely to have them over the bigger stores. Lastly, coming here is not a mental chore. Parking is easy and close to the entrance, isles are wide, store is rarely crazy busy and employees are always helpful. Bring your own bags! read more

Natural Grocers did a good job of luring me in. First, they sent me coupons for a free loaf of bread, honey, and almond butter. So my plan was to go in and get my free stuff. I wandered through the store to see what my closest and newest neighborhood grocer had in stock, and they had $2 per dozen of cage free eggs, $2.25 kombucha, $2.79 for a lb of organic strawberries, and a ton of other great deals! Plus, if you sign up for their rewards program, you can also get $2 off your next purchase. I ended up spending way more than I initially planned (which was $0), but I'm not upset about it in the slightest, and will definitely be back. Welcome to the neighborhood! read more

Not a grocery store. Half supplements, half frozen pizza. Parades as "wellness" but touts keto support groups at checkout (Atkins was debunked as extremely unhealthy, remember?). And oh, if you're 32 and standing next to your 46 year old husband while he buys a bottle of wine, the clerk will refuse to sell it to him because you left your ID in the car. He'll tell you it's "OLCC rules" that he has to check IDs for everyone in "the group" (it's not, it's some weird power trip fueled by eighty five varieties of kombucha). So keep that in mind and go to Safeway instead. Their beer/wine section is bigger than a utility closet, at least. Their kale might not measure up though (that was some - great - kale we got). read more

Natural Grocers is a lot cheaper to shop at than New Seasons. They only sell organic produce. If you want good organic products then this is the place to go. Their selection is not huge, but what they sell is worthy. They only sell meats and cheeses which meet their standard of Organic and safe for you to eat. They haven't sold out their principles, as New Seasons has done, by implementing non-healthy foods into their grocery shelves, and throwing out their best and most healthy products. Alcohol is not sold at this store. They sell Kombucha only. You will find a variety of bulk products, and frozen products which are great. As I said, if you want to pay $1.00 to $2.00 less for your natural food groceries, then shop at "Natural Grocers". It's worth it, and they have some great sales every month. They also have a program where you earn points for purchases, and get coupon discounts at the counter every time you earn more points. They don't limit your points earnings to a certain number, then make you go back to point one again. You keep earning more coupons, and they have "buy $60.00 worth of groceries and get $5.00 off quite often." Watch their promotions and sign up for their free apps to see all the latest and greatest deals. Lots and lots of supplements. More than "The Vitamin Shoppe", and great selection too.
