I happened upon this store and decided to look through it. The inventory is very limited. The person working there told me they are adding more items and would note my request on their list. Fun concept to have a wish list at a grocery store. Doesn't help much though in reality. I'd already checked out when I saw multiple papers on the counter that were extremely skewed in their views of the situation in Palestine. If you look back at review sites there are multiple posts from people who are likely Jewish and probably felt unsafe when they saw them. Here is a photo as an example of one. I saw this the day after the FBI released new stats showing a jump of 63% in antisemitic hate crime in the US. A store like this should care about making their customers of all religions and ethnicities feel safe. I expect they will likely reply since they have to the other reviews and perhaps make a comment about kids in Palestine like they did to another reviewer, or something similar. So I will close this review with a quote from the recent Democratic National Convention: "In a competition of pain, there are no winners." Those who care, therefore, should care for all and recognize their impact on minority communities especially. Jews are only 2% of the world population and yet constantly need to be on the defense. read more

I'm very excited about this new zero-waste philosophy store done well! You can get grains, beans, spices, dry cooking ingredients, household cleaners, body care, produce, bread, tea, coffee, oil, vinegar, vegan cheese, snacks, household items, and more, here. They list each item's source. A mass consumer grocery could never and would never do that. Many items are organic, they are a good source for gluten-free and dietary restrictions, and a great source for vegan. They have a unique system for food items mandated by Oregon regulations. Food items that go in jars can only go in their own deposit jars. Other food items can only go in the store brown paper bags. There are different rules for liquid soap, just ask. We need to get a focus on state law to update Oregon to post-(plastic) packaging options. They have a loyalty system tied to the jar deposit system. The store is very nicely designed in the Kinfolk vein. I found items hard to find elsewhere. In spices, I found ground rosemary, and baking-cooking ingredients like reishi mushroom powder for umami. They also have seaweeds and powders of beet, rosehip, psyllium, dandelion root, and many powdered ingredients I don't know. They have some unusual original grains in whole form, like spelt, kamut, farro, and other gluten-free options in flour like teff and brown rice flours. If you are a camper, they have some dehydrated camp foods you add water to on your cook stove, like garden veggie lasagna chips. I'm very curious about their lemon-lavender-clove powdered laundry detergent. Their vegan cheeses are packed in their unique compostable wrap. For coffee, they are rotating a small selection of two, with tasting notes and origin, so just check them on your visit. It would be a good stop for tourists and visitors to Portland to see what is possible. The Realm Refillery is a new small family business with unique products which may move you towards zero waste, and their products are healthy too! read more

I absolutely love this store, it's my favorite! I wish it was closer to my home but every trip is worth it. The owners are super friendly and helpful. They have everything you need - vegan cheese, nuts, grains, veggies, oil, detergent, compostable and earth friendly items which is very important to me. You can get reusable containers or compostable/recyclable paper bags that you weigh so you get exactly the amount you need. They also accept EBT in case you were wondering. I love coming here for staple items and unique specialty ones! Take your time the first few goes and you will get the hang of the process! They really think of everything to keep tools sanitary, and the products transparent. If you read the labels and ask questions, you won't go wrong. Absolutely wonderful. As a single person on a budget this place is amazing for me as I can just buy enough for me and don't have to buy a family size of things. The concept is a good one, but it's not unique. I have been using my own containers for many years. Some stores, including both of Portland's food co-ops and some of the other natural food stores, have no problem with using your own containers for bulk items and produce. The selection here is good, but, again, most of the items are available elsewhere at equal quality, for similar or lower prices. The Refillery refuses to provide a receipt for your purchase. This is unconscionable. Anyone buying on behalf of their boss and expecting to be reimbursed, buying for a friend, or anyone who just wants to keep a record of their expenses, should be able to get a receipt. It's also necessary for returns. Instead, The Refillery demands your email address, saying that they will email a receipt, but also allowing them to send you spam, and to sell, trade or otherwise misuse your private information. read more

I love coming here for so many reasons. First, avoiding plastic while shopping at big box grocery stores is near impossible. Second, shopping low waste as a vegan is so hard, and this store makes it so easy to know what food I can and cannot eat, because I can eat it all. The snacks are amazing here, the pastries that are sometimes there are always iconic. From everyday staples like flour, sugar, noodles, to the more avant-garde food items like blue garlic, and local plant based faves in low waste grocery form (Im looking at the Dirty Lettuce chicken, tabor bread, ramblin rose, and Vtopian cheese) in the freezer/fridge. OH AND THE PRODUCE HELLO I EAT that everyday! It is local and seasonal fruits, greens, berries, citrus, and veggies, have to love that. If the produce isn't local, it is fair trade and pays back into the economy from which the food came. Talk about a reciprocal relationship right there! If you are thinking of eating more plant based foods, dont be afraid to chat up the staff, as they have extensive knowledge on the foods and what to eat. I am so excited about this grocery store! It's exactly what the city needed. They have EVERYTHING and the staff is extremely kind about explaining how the store works. They took the time to explain to me how things were kept sanitary, you sanitize your hands right when you walk in, the bins, jars and all containers are closed. I've seen them walk around and make sure everything is clean and sterile, this place is very thought out. It's so easy to get exactly what you need and I've also been trying different foods since they opened, they have grains and spices that I've never even heard of. Ryan, one of the owners, was happy to tell me what the seasonings, grains, etc. were and helped with creative ways to use them. They even have a bulk beauty section with hair products and shampoos, face wash, toners, scrubs and Epsom salts. And it's all "take what you need" so you don't have to buy a full size. You can just try it out. I'm in love with this store! Aside from *single handedly saving the planet* the other thing I love is that it's a very comfortable environment. I tend to avoid grocery shopping and opt for pick up. I am always so excited to grocery shop now! It's not overwhelming and even though I'm just picking up the necessities, it feels waaayyyy cooler than that. I cannot say enough good things about this store and the owners.
