So I went to the Navy pier at night and although it was closed security did let us like walk along the side and it was really cool to see the lake at night. I did eventually get to go to the pier the next day and it was an amazing experience. As a Midwest girly it's always nice to see the lakes up close.
We had a great time at the Navy Pier during our visit to Chicago. We walked around and got to see all the beautiful architecture that surrounds the area and later went inside to explore the shops and restaurants. There is so much to do. They have nice attractions like indoor rollerblading, rides and more.
Navy pier is an interesting place, and a quintessential American visit spot since it's actually the beginning of the famous route 66 that runs from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles! The pier itself is very long -- if you walk all the way through the shopping area in the middle or along either side of the pier, it takes a solid 30 min or so because it is so long. Inside the shopping area, there are lots of souvenier shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. There is also a hotel in the middle, maybe two hotels actually? I wasn't sure, but there was definitely a check in desk for a fancy looking one. There are some public bathrooms throughout the place too that are fairly clean! At the end of the pier there are some benches where you can sit and look out over Lake Michigan which is so big, it feels like you're looking at an ocean. They have the little coin pay binoculars as well. Lots of folks were here just sitting and hanging out, some couples were here maybe on dates, and some friends etc. just running around and skateboarding etc. It's definitely a chill place to gather. The sunset here is just stunning too, since the sun sets over the high rises in downtown in the distance and casts really pretty colors and light over everything. It's definitely a great place to just walk around, especially in the evenings (before it gets too dark). You can easily come here on the public buses too (it's the end of the line). Would recommend a visit when in Chicago!
Navy Pier is a winner for families! We spent the whole day here and never ran out of things to do. The food variety is unbeatable -- every taste and every picky eater in our group was covered. The rides were a huge hit with the kids, and there's genuinely something for everyone, from the little ones to the grown-ups. Pro tip for fellow parents: the FlyOver attraction is fun, but it's pricey per person, so build that into your budget if you're rolling deep with the family. Everything else is well worth it. We'll absolutely be back!
I loved Navy Pier. The views of the lake were amazing. We went on a day where it wasn't too busy. The pier has shops, food, and a carnival at the end. It was fun to walk up and down with a view of the buildings on the way back. We had access here for the river cruise and were able to take the bus from our stay on the Loop I thoughy about going on the Ferris wheel, but it was a bit too pricey, and we already had tickets to the sears tower, so that was enough being high up. I definitely would have tried it I'd we hadn't already booked other activities.
One of the highlights of any trip to Chicago is a visit to Navy Pier--a destination where history, culture, and entertainment come together along the shores of Lake Michigan. Originally designed by architect Charles Sumner Frost, the pier opened in 1916 as Municipal Pier. Built at a cost of $4.5 million atop 20,000 timber pilings imported from Oregon, its design was inspired by Daniel Burnham's visionary Plan of Chicago. It was intended to serve as both a shipping hub and a recreational centerpiece for the city. In 1927, the pier was renamed Navy Pier to honor the naval personnel stationed there during World War I. During both world wars, it played a significant role in military operations--housing barracks, a Red Cross station, and training facilities. In World War II alone, more than 60,000 service members trained here, including 15,000 pilots. In a fascinating and little-known chapter, converted Great Lakes steamers were used as makeshift aircraft carriers; many training mishaps sent planes to the bottom of Lake Michigan, where they still rest today. After the war, the pier entered a new phase. In 1946, it temporarily became home to what is now the University of Illinois Chicago, serving returning veterans on the GI Bill. Over the decades, Navy Pier continued to evolve--from hosting the massive SS Aquarama passenger ship in the 1950s to welcoming Queen Elizabeth II during her 1959 goodwill visit marking the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. It was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1977 and underwent major renovations in 1994. Since 2011, it has operated as a nonprofit dedicated to public programming and community engagement. Today, Navy Pier remains one of Chicago's most beloved attractions, offering something for everyone. A standout experience is the Centennial Wheel, which provides breathtaking panoramic views of the skyline and Lake Michigan. The ride is both relaxing and exhilarating--a must-do while visiting. Laughter was the highlight of the day. We had to laugh to keep from being a smidge upset that almost everything was closed. But what did I expect during a pandemic, right? I guess it would've been better if I hadn't have anticipated going to the Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant only to find out it was closed as well. There were so many wonders from past vacations that I wanted to introduced to my husband; unfortunately, the only piece of goodness that we got to share from the past were the breathtaking views. We got to see the flowers and fountains in The Crystal Gardens, however, we didn't get to ride the Ferris wheel due to the long wait. The churro ice cream and good vibes were plenty to round out my navy pier exploration. There's plenty of walking, a few places for treats and eats and also rides that are kid friendly.
Beautiful place! Tons of shops to look at and places to eat. Theres a couple of stands along the lake and the views are spectacular. Tons of activities for the kids and family as well. When you walk to the end, you see an amazing view of the city.
Amazing and beautiful. You can take a nice long walk, look at the boats, eat, drink, take in the sights. There are no bikes allowed so the pace is casual and relaxing. It all ends with a tribute and statue to The Bob Newhart Show. You young folks google that now! This is a place you should visit for sure.
The Navy Pier is a nice long walk, lined with restaurants, bars, a children's museum, carousel, Ferris wheel, and interesting sculpture. At the end is a large anchor sculpture. On the side is a metal sculpture of a man sitting on a couch with room enough for a selfie. You also get an opportunity to take in the fresh air and ocean view. On the way to the end of the pier, I noticed many restaurants and bars to grab a drink or food. You can also purchase a tickets to take a boat ride. It wasn't until I took the other walkway on the other side that I saw the small amusement park. Because I came in the morning, during the week, it was nice and quiet. None of the restaurants or bars were open yet, and there were only a handful of small parties on the pier.
Came here to see a play at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. It towards the end of the pier. I commuted this time and got to stroll inside the complex. I enjoyed the exhibits and displays as well as the small shops and kiosks. There are also lots of food options. I opted for IDOF and TeAmo for a light snack after the show. On a good day, one can walk outside as well and enjoy the cool breeze of the lake.
What can I say, Navy Pier is iconic year round, even on a chilly afternoon in April. There is plenty to do for all ages, from The Children's Museum to speed board tours, lounging in the sun, riding the Ferris wheel or peddling g your own pedi cab for 4, not to mention the food and bar options too. So bundle up, put on your walking shoes and explore all things Chicago on the water, don't forget your souvenirs.
Navy pier was cool. Go and ride the huge Farris wheel it offers great views of the city and water. Lots of food options available here as well. Navy Pier is a must see when in the Chi!
I'm so glad that I decided to visit the Navy Pier on my last day in Chicago. I feel that this is a must see stop on one's visit to Chicago. It's a tourist spot, however, well worth the visit. This is a nice place to stretch your legs and go for a walk. There is plenty of real estate to walk here. As you get to the very end where you turn back or finish the loop, the view of the lake is beautiful. There is a nice food court inside. I stopped for another Chicago Dog. Yes, I'm definitely sold on Chicago Dogs! There is also plenty of seating around the food court. It was nice to sit down and enjoy my food before walking around outside. On the day I visited it was a bit gloomy outside. I imagine this would be a great spot to hang outside when the weather is nice. After finishing my food and drink, I walked the entire loop of the pier. I enjoyed the city views and the opportunity to breathe in the air emanating from the lake. Take your time to pause every so often and take in the beautiful views of the city and lakefront. This is also a great location to people watch. Plan accordingly as far as weather goes and make sure your phone is charged to take pics. Again, I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to visit before leaving Chicago. I would visit here again the next time in Chicago. hope your experience will be as memorable as mine was. read more
Enjoyed this little pit stop while visiting the city with a friend. Had a pretty nice view of the city and the beautiful turquoise water. Lots of cute spaces for photo ops, especially the holiday specific decorations. It was cold out, so it was nice to duck indoors and use the restrooms as well. Super clean and well maintained. They also had a mini ice skating rink outdoors. Can't wait to visit when it's warmer and less cloudy. read more
We took a ride share to this location and glad we did so I wasn't frustrated w/traffic and finding a park. Came on a beautiful day and was able to just walk and look at different attractions. They have a Ferris wheel and another little ride for people that goes up and drops down fast. There were different places to get alcoholic beverages and other snacks from on the pier. We found a Mexican food hut on the pier that was really good. Music was playing from one of the DJ's set-up outside a restaurant. There were dinner cruise boots getting passengers and various other boats selling tickets for different site seeing adventures. We decided to do a tour since it was nice out and sun was setting (bring a hoodie or buy one while there) we decided to take a 45 min water tour of Chicago and it was so pretty and informative. There's also an indoor complex that has restaurants and various other shops inside (food, clothing, and various other knickknacks). read more

This was another stop on the red bus tour with city pass. We stayed the longest here. Took the Architectural boat tour here and ate at Art Smith's. Also rode the scarey Ferris wheel. The views were nice. Definitely spend some time here. read more

Navy Pier was cool. The outside is a bit boring unless you like to look at the ocean. The inside has an indoor type of mall with a ton of stores and restaurants. One of the main things here is the Centennial Wheel. That was pretty cool and you spin around 3 times. read more
Many times I've been to Navy Pier. For eating, for a nice walk, for just relaxing...I've had the simplest hamburger from McDonald's to a huge Margaritaville's Nacho plate. The choices of restaurant and shops are really good....You can catch a boat tour or play some video arcade games inside, it really is a playground for young and old. Navy Pier is basically a 3,300-foot-long pier on the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Navy Pier encompasses over 50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions and exhibition facilities and is one of the top destinations in the Midwestern United States, drawing nearly over nine million visitors annually. Historic Navy Pier is among the most visited destinations in the world. Since its reopening in 1995, the Pier has welcomed more than 186 million guests, including a record-breaking 9.3 million guests per year before the pandemic. Navy Pier has enjoyed a remarkable evolution. Originally designed for shipping and recreational purposes, the facility has evolved into a premiere entertainment and exposition center. It is one of the most visited attractions in the entire Midwest and is Chicago's second-most visited tourist attraction. read more

Nice spot in Downtown Chicago for sightseeing - walking distance to/from the Bean and other major downtown attractions, although it isn't terribly close to any rail stations, unfortunately - there are some buses that run right next door, at least. Wish they opened a little earlier! Not a ton to do other than walk the boardwalk, but the views across the lake are pretty nice, especially when the weather's good. Food offerings are a little on the pricy side, definitely touristy, but overall not too bad - there are water fountains if you look hard enough, so you don't have to shell out if you don't want to. Definitely worth a visit if you're out of town, although it's not exactly a destination to go out of your way for in itself. read more
I recently visited the Navy Pier during Golden-Con, the inaugural Golden Girls fan convention. Though the Pier gets busy on weekends with tourists, families, and young people, it's a great location for a convention and provides stellar views of the city skyline. My daughter and I took a morning walk on a Sunday to appreciate the views without the crowds. Otherwise, the Navy Pier was busy from Friday to Sunday with other conferences, a prom, a car show, and the usual crowds coming to eat, ride the Ferris wheel, shop, or hang out. There are lots of restaurants and clean bathrooms. You can also find vending machines and water bottle refilling stations but those take some patience to find. During our morning stroll, we noticed there are workout stations with suggested yoga poses and stretches. I would definitely use those if I got to run the pier the next time I'm in town. read more

The pier during cold weather seasons gets CRAZY cold! They have so many eateries to choose from inside, I recommend walking around and seeing your options. Outside there are tour services being offered, and bars as well. Everything looks very clean and well organized. read more

How fun when you got boat rides all over and cool places to walk around. With a great view of Michigan lake as well as the whole scenic view of the metropolitan area this place has it all. Located at 600 Grand East Avenue in Chicago. It's not hard to miss as the huge Ferris wheel can be seen birds eye view over the lake. So much fun activities, as I mentioned earlier there are touristic boat rides and shops to explore. They even have the famous Chicago theatre there as well as the cute carousel. If you're feeling hungry they've got different selections of cuisines inside. The boat rides have different tours such as lakeside or industrial which is the city. Definitely a beautiful site to explore! read more

Chicago's Navy Pier is a cool place to hang out, enjoy the sights, shop and get a good bite to eat. My family and I went to walk along the pier and visit the local attractions. While there, we decided to do the architecture boat tour, which was very informative. Our tour guide was upbeat and had a lot of knowledge about everything along the river's route. My sister and the children enjoyed riding the rides, including the ferris wheel. There is something fun to do for every age group. Even if you just sit and enjoy the scenery of the lake and people watch, you can let hours pass just doing that. The Navy Pier is definity a place to visit when going to Chicago. read more

I must go if you've never been. Lots to do including shopping, eating and fun for the whole family. I walk to the Navy pier on a nice July Sunday morning. I then decided to take a trip on the Ferris wheel, which was pretty with amazing views. I stopped in for a quick margarita and then had ice cream as well. I love the lounge chairs that they have because after my ice cream I ended up dozing off and one it was a very busy day and people watching is fun too. Overall, I would definitely recommend it if you're visiting Chicago. read more
My group of friends and I enjoyed walking around navy pier and rode on the Ferris wheel. The attendant for Ferris wheel tickets suggested that we go on the ride at night to see the skyline lit up and that was definitely the right call! The lights were beautiful and we were pleasantly surprised at how much time we got on the wheel- three full revolutions! The Ferris wheel car was very spacious (can fit up to 8 people) so our group of 5 had plenty of room. There was not a bad seat in the house! There are a lot of restaurants on navy pier also but we just stopped for some popcorn at Garrett's. If that doesn't scream Chicago tourist then I don't know what does! read more
This pier is a cool spot to hang out. Ride share will have surcharge coming and going from here. Tickets to rides are pricy. The boat tour of the river is super awesome. Its 45 minutes and they go around Lake Michigan. The best boat tour is the night time architectural tour. Omg, I was pretty dam amazed. The lights and the way the buildings were built, so amazing. I hope to come back in the near and not too far distant future . read more
The Navy Pier experience was not exactly what I had in mind to be honest. 100% my fault for not doing more research on what exactly the pier has to offer though so I would recommend that before going to review what the pier offers exactly. I am glad to finally have gone but really, it was mostly just little shops and restaurants inside which isn't what I was expecting really. I could see this being a great meeting place if you have kids as there is more for them really here than the adults I felt. There are 4 different rides on the pier but those all come with individual prices to get on and their is the Chicago Children's Museum. They do a fireworks show depending on the dates but that can also be seen from other locations in the city. It was a beautiful day out so we did enjoy walking around looking at everything but we really didn't spend any time here because we already had dinner plans elsewhere and had plenty of other places to get on our way too. read more
Navy pier is basically a larger sized board walk on the lake near downtown Chicago that offers dining options, shopping and entertainment. When visiting Chicago from Louisville I've been to the navy pier about 4 times over the last decade or so. Some of our favorite highlights is eating at giodanos deep dish pizza, the giant Ferris wheel, the stained glass artwork Museum and our absolute favorite the boat tours you can take of Chicago. The pier offers plenty of cool site seeing and opportunity for fun. You can spend a few hours there with the family and get good food and have a good time. Absolutely worth checking out if you're a tourist like my family and wanting to check out the landmarks of Chicago. read more
The pier is beautiful, but the QR code leading to their website for ticketing leads to a broken payment widget. Basically you try to go through all these steps to purchase your tickets, and then the form where you put your card is broken. Please fix! Area itself has a nice park, places to eat, and various rides for families. Masks are required indoors. read more

The wheel goes around 3 times and has AC, it's about $21. You have to take a photo before u go on whether you want to or not. According to the kid it's their policy but u just don't have to buy it if u don't want. And apparently u agree to it at the time of purchase. (Not true, there's no waiver or anything) not worth 21 bucks personally but it does give a nice view of chicago read more

Good for walking, sight and people seeing. They offer a few activities/rides for kids and they also host events here and there (according to there website). I'm not a Chicago native so it was a bit too chilly for me in May. I came here with my husband for our anniversary and we wanted the experience during our stay but other than that I would not have visited the pier until Chicago gets much warmer. Lol read more
Busy, busy spot with great views of the city and water. There are tons of shops, restaurants and things to do in on the boardwalk to keep you entertained. Magnificent views of the city. Boats in the water everywhere. Many photo opportunities exist. There are a few amusement parks rides at the Navy Pier. You can also book a boat ride here. Parked in the parking garage while visiting. read more

Navy Pier is your standard over water tourist trap with requisite gift stores, chain restaurants and overpriced amusement rides including a giant wheel. My favorite thing to do was jogging around the pier before the crowds got too big and posing for pictures with the giant glove. Honestly, there's not a ton to do here unless you're heading to the Children's Museum. read more

My daughter and I loved The Navy Pier! So many restaurants, amazing views, and the rides were so fun! My daughter convinced me to go in the ride that drops you down from high and let's just say never again. See the video for a laugh. HAHA! It was fun but I am terrified of heights. The centennial wheel was great, air conditioned and amazing views of the entire pier and surrounding areas. We cooled off with some ice cream and milkshakes, and enjoyed multiple rides on the swing! read more

Amazing place to spend a day! For children, there is the Chicago Children's Museum. Plenty of indoor activities for families with small children. The Pavilion has countless of food options available, including a super delicious ice cream place, Kilwins. Shakespeare Theatre is also located at Navy Pier! There are numerous attractions, restaurants and boating activities, including the Tall Windy sail boat, what I highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun time and see the city skyline. The Ferries wheel is beautiful, and of course, easy to spot from any direction. Navy Pier has free entertainment, music, dance ... you name it! I also found a beautiful photo exhibit "Water brings life to Chicago" by Barry Butler. The photos are amazing! At the very end of the Pier, there is the Beer Garden, with unobstructed views of the city's skyline. Navy Pier is kept pretty clean, there are numerous trash cans everywhere, including recycling bins too. Employees are very nice and helpful. I had a great conversation with the gift shop employees about the city and generally about life in Chicago. I love visiting Navy Pier again for sure! read more

Is it a tourist destination? Absolutely. Will you have a great time? Most definitely. Saturday nights are very busy and restaurants fill up fast, but the ambiance of a night on the lake with the Chicago skyline in the distance is hard to beat. Highly recommend taking public transportation or a ride share, as parking is hard to come by or a lengthy walk away on the busier nights. read more

For our first visit to Chicago, we stayed at the Sable at Navy Pier Hotel. This gave me an opportunity to really experience the Navy Pier for 4 days. (+) Fantastic views! It was great to just casually stroll along the Pier and take everything in! You are treated to some gorgeous views of the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan. There were a few times we would grab a drink or a bite to eat and just grab a table on the Pier and enjoy the views and beautiful weather. (+) Fireworks show every Wednesday and Saturday and open to the public! They really go all out on the show! The show lasted about 10 minutes and was visually impressive. :) (+) Plenty of food and drink options all around the Pier. Keep in mind that the prices are going to be inflated. They do have some cheap(er-ish) options if you just want a quick bite. We did enjoy some Potbelly's and McDonalds during our stay. (Don't judge me on the MickeyD's. I actually had a Steak Egg McMuffin right before we headed back to the airport that was freaking awesome! Why is this not nationwide?! It was pretty damn tasty! :) (+) They also have the Kids Museum here in addition to some rides for everyone to enjoy! This includes the Centennial Wheel and a Merry Go round, among a few other things. (-) Easily my biggest complaint here would be how early things close here during the week. The vast majority of things here close at 10 pm Monday through Thursday. (Coincidentally the exact duration of our trip) It would have been nice to have some options for food and drink later on. (-) Prices are pretty hefty here everywhere so just brace yourself for that. I am so glad that we were able to stay at Navy Pier for our first ever trip to the Windy City! There are plenty of things to do here for families and couples alike! 4 stars. read more
