For an organization that doesn't have an office and no full time staff they run a pretty tight outfit at this church. The kitchen managers know their stuff and have their system down. If you want to help there's always something you can do, be it anything from setting up tables to cooking the food. I've seen numerous groups participate, whether it be military, local university or small organizations there's never a lack of people willing to help out. Sometimes it's even too crowded. How many places have you helped out where they have too many volunteers? And what's best is that they don't force their volunteers to make any commitment. Which I think works to their advantage as to why they get so many people. You can come when you can, be it once a month or how ever frequently you can fit it into your schedule.

You get to do everything from, set tables, get condiments ready, prepare food, cook it, serve the food, and then clean up. Not only are you directed the whole way on what to do, but you get to be a part of the whole meal preparation and delivery process and you get to own it. The best part about SB is that it is almost completely volunteer run. The team leaders are volunteers, the church has offered up its space and groups of people just show up to help. You can meet new people as well as see an immediate impact that volunteering provides. There is usually leftover food too, so you too can sit down and enjoy a late lunch if you feel inclined.

Events are timed in a way to fit into the schedules of working professionals, as they occur in the evenings or on the weekends. And for us commitment-phobes, there are no regular meeting or training requirements - just sign up for an event, show up on that day, and volunteer with cool people! And better yet: One Brick includes a social component to volunteering! After the majority of events, the One Brick Event Manager will invite the volunteers to an optional social (usually at a nearby bar), so they can continue getting to know each other. One Brick also hosts monthly volunteer socials at a different spot every month. Past socials have been held at Slumbrew's Brewery, American Fresh Assembly Row, Bantam Cider Tap Room, the Asgard, Dillon's, Highball Lounge, Howl at the Moon, Boston Beer Works, and the Lawn on D among others. I attended an event that helped high school students who wanted to go to college with the process. I had a good time and I really enjoyed the experience. However, there was a lot of volunteers there and I couldn't tell or find anyone who was with One Brick. In the email before the event the organizer said they'd be wearing a one brick t-shirt but I couldn't find anyone at the event. Believe me I looked!! I didn't have the names for anyone else involved and had no idea how many people were supposed to be there from one brick. It was a huge bummer that no one made an effort to seek me out either knowing my name and that I was new. Definitely not an easy group to get involved with. Really a bummer and pretty disappointing.

In addition to being the office of over 40 nonprofits, it also has meeting space available for other nonprofits to use (you do not have to be a tenant). I've been to meeting here sponsored by Tech Networks of Boston, Women in Development (fundraising), The Communications Network, Public Relations Society of America, and Third Sector New England. The event space is great, but my one warning is to triple check the microphones with the nonprofit center events staff if you have speakers. About half the times I've been to events there, audio problems occurred, so I always sit in the front to be sure I can hear. I'm jealous of the employees of the nonprofits in this building! I researched every venue I could find, over 55 in total. We couldn't afford to spend thousands of dollars, and time was running out - as were my options. Then I came across The NonProfit Center - after my initial inquiry I was contacted by Faisal and literally everything was smooth sailing from there! I took a look at the space and it was perfect, they were available the date I needed, and the price was right. Faisal answered all of my (many) questions and kept in touch to make sure there was nothing else I needed. Moreover, the employee working at the front or the intake area was extremely unprofessional with her assumptions that I should have known the protocol & procedures in donating. Clearly, I did not as I was following the incorrect instructions provided to me over the phone. Nor be told in a condescending manner to "walk down the street to Goodwill or Salvation Army"...I walk myself back to the parking lot & along the street blessing individuals who were in need as I waited for my Uber. I applaud the charge of any shelter nurturing the betterment of others, expressly as a former shelter occupier & volunteer. Nevertheless, all employees/volunteers should know the basic processes when representing a temporary housing environment, specifically if there are non-wavering guidelines to adhere to.
