Must experience this tour! Captain Nathaniel Hutchins aka Matt gave a very engaging Reverse Tour that started at Faneuil Hall and ended at Boston Commons. Great storytelling about revolutionary events, like the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party. He also helped debunk the Paul Revere story and gave credit to the riders that actually helped alert the town. Navigating the car noise, traffic signals, and competing tour groups was tricky in the sometimes-narrow cobblestone streets, so he deserves credit for keeping the group intact. He was also one of only a couple of tour guides that actually dressed the part (Nathaniel was his ancestor), which was a significant bonus in bringing the storytelling to life. First, let me say Jeremiah Poope was solid. He knew his stuff and had good energy. But here's the rub: we had a group of about 90-110 people, and not even a bullhorn would've helped get his voice to the back of the line. At one point in the Granary Burying Ground, we were stretched out single file, practically forming a human cross through the cemetery one path horizontal, one vertical. Unfortunately, I didn't hear or catch much of anything at several key stops: * Massachusetts State House - He pointed at it. That's it. * Granary Burying Ground - Heard something about Mother Goose. That's all. * King's Chapel & Burying Ground - Not sure we even saw it. * Old Corner Bookstore - No idea if this was covered. Couldn't hear. * Old South Meeting House - Again, not sure if it was discussed. * Faneuil Hall - Heard something about Susan Summers or maybe Susan Something? Hard to tell. At the end, we were told the tour technically stops there, and we were left to follow the line and figure out the final five stops on our own. Apparently, someone called in sick that day, but honestly that's not my problem. They still took full price for a half-experience. Jeremiah did his best, but the tour company oversold the group and didn't adapt. If you go, make sure the group size is manageable or be ready to miss half the tour while watching other people nod at facts you can't hear. read more

My family had a Sunday tour for the Freedom Trail, and it was a great way to kick off our Boston trip. This was one of the three tours we had in Boston, and unfortunately it wasn't the best one by quite a margin. While the price was fair, we were in a group of at least 60 (probably closer to 80) others and this weakened the quality of the experience. It became very hard to follow the group leader in such a crowd, and it was also hard to hear our tour guide for a decent proportion of the tour. I would have rather paid a bit more for a smaller-not necessarily small, but smaller-group. Our tour in Salem was much more enjoyable and this was one of the reasons why. I learned several interesting facts. Most notably, I learned that Italian immigrants had taken the tombstones of others to use as a pizza baking plate! I would have enjoyed to walk on my own and read up ahead of time, though. Our speaker was a high school history teacher who brought the subject alive, but her microphone broke very early in the tour. Just a little glimpse of history right before your eyes! The Freedom Trail is the perfect testament to where we've been and to how far we've come. The trail itself is only about 2.5 miles long, but it stops along several significant historical landmarks that you'll naturally want to delve deeper into. The trail begins in the bustling Boston Commons park and ends at the striking Bunker Hill Monument. I started on the trail around noon and ended just before the sun went down around 6 pm. If you really want to explore each site in depth, you may want to split the trail over a couple days or go back to visit some of the landmarks on a different day. Since I was short on time, I decided to spend one whole day on the trail. But honestly, that was enough for me to really get a feel for the significance of this trail. The Freedom Trail passes through 16 prominent historical landmarks, but there are so many more stops that can easily be included too. I'd say the most compelling sites for me were Boston Common, Granary Burying Ground, Boston Massacre Site, Faneuil Hall, and Bunker Hill Monument. Although it's not implicitly listed as one of the sites along the trail, I also found the Holocaust Memorial to be very powerful, moving, and informative. As you walk down this path, you'll be met with some of the most gorgeous scenery in the city. Beautifully manicured gardens, bright city views, striking statutes, and stunning old buildings are just some of the lovely attractions that will grace your eyes as you walk along the trail. There's a wealth of information included here too as you can literally stop just about anywhere on the trail and find a placard detailing the history of the landmark that you're near. Best of all, a stroll along The Freedom Trail is absolutely free (as it should be)! Self guided tours are most popular as you can tour at your own pace, but you can also book a guided tour here as well (this information can easily be found online). Walking along the Freedom Trail was honestly a very humbling experience for me. I feel so honored and grateful to be able to experience this great piece of history that we as Americans so often take for granted. If you want Jeremiah as your tour guide, he usually knows his schedule a week in advance. You can reach out to him on Instagram and ask his schedule. Information about the tour: There are two main tours that cover the Freedom Trail. The most popular and the one I took was "Walk Into History". This covers the beginning 2/3 of the trail. The Freedom Trail is definitely one of those things you should do if you are visiting Boston so that you can see numerous of historical sites and learn more about American history. There are a few ways you can attempt the freedom trail, by which you can join a tour (a few are free but rely on tip/ donation and you pay whatever you feel, such as Tours by the Foot), you can go on it alone with some research online on the places to check out or you can also purchase and download an audio tour and play it while you walk the trail. On a Sunday afternoon, my husband, our little girl dog and I decided to walk this trail on our own and ended up purchasing an audio tour from Tours by the Foot for only $2.99. We saw other groups of people had done the same and were playing their tours from their phone as they walked. One guy was very smart to bring a wireless speaker and played it for his family while they walked (which I would recommend if you plan on doing the trail this way). The Freedom Trail is about 2.5 miles and can be done in 2 hours, but that is if you do not stop and check out some (or all) of the sites along the way. We ended up doing it in 5 hours (but I think we did stop a bit more because our little girl wanted to sniff everything along the way and we also did take time to explore). The Freedom Trail begins at Boston Common, which is one of the oldest parks in America. Boston Common is also home to the famous ducklings (based on Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey). The next things you will get to see on this trail are (in order): Massachusetts State House (the state capitol, unfortunately it was closed on our visit) Park Street Church Granary Burying Ground King's Chapel & King's Chapel Burying Ground Boston Latin School + Benjamin Franklin Statue Old Corner Bookstore Old South Meeting House Old State House Boston Massacre Site Faneuil Hall (next door to Quincy Market in case you wish to make a pee stop and also grab something for lunch) Paul Revere House (very close by by Mike's Pastry and Modern Pastry if you wish to try either of their cannoli) Old North Church Copp's Hill Burying Ground USS Constitution Bunker Hill Monument (the end of the trail) What I do like best about The Freedom Trail is that there are markers on the ground and a distinct path that you can easily follow on the ground in case you get lost or get confused on which way to go. It is also something you can do on your own pace and is a great way to encourage some physical activity and get some sight seeing in (and of course some great photos too). Of the things that we did on our visit to Boston, this was probably the best thing we did (and major bonus that it is dog friendly so our little girl could come along). read more

I will tell you that if you're coming to Boston, you MUST do this tour. And if you're doing it- I STRONGLY suggest getting Jeremiah. He says he's been at it for 20 years, but his stories, jokes and commentary seemed completely fresh and entirely engaging. The Freedom Trail is one of the iconic touristy things to do in Boston, and there's a reason for that. I did the full trail many, many years ago but decided to go with this shorter, more compact trail with our family. The 1.5 hour length is the right duration for kids, and our guide, Jeremiah Poope (his actual last name!), kept it interesting the entire time. He has been a tour guide in Boston for many years, and he had a ton of interesting stories and facts beyond the typical revolutionary war factoids. The distance traveled is quite short - about a mile - and mainly centers on the areas around Boston Common and Faneuil Hall. At ~$15 per person, this tour is a bargain. That being said, it is a walking tour so you have to do much of the "work" yourself. We bought tickets in advance but I think there's a lot of capacity on each tour as it seems as though the upper limit on a tour is quite high (I think we had ~50 people on our tour). They sell tickets at the Boston Common visitors center. read more

We took a guided walking tour with Ben Soloway (aka Dr. Mather Byles) and he was fantastic! He was extremely knowledgeable and his corny jokes added a delightful touch to the experience. The walk was easy and not too strenuous. Our tour covered 11 out of 16 sites, starting at The Boston Common and ending at Faneuil Hall. Superb trail that takes you 2.5 miles from Boston Common out to Bunker Hill, just simply follow the path from the Visitor Center out on Boston Common to begin your journey. There are 16 stops along the trail, but unless you are truly invested in it, I do not recommend stopping at all of them. The Paul Revere House is great, as are all the cemeteries (including the grave of Revere and Ben Franklin's parents), but it is all special. If you have the time and patience or just want a work out, I highly recommend this and save your money and go walk it yourself. read more

We toured with Margaret Kemble Gage. She suffered through a hot fourth of July with a smile. Her character was interesting--married to a loyalist but having an affair with a patriot. Whoa. She was able to converse with me on the Boston history topics I know: John Winthrop and Anne Bradstreet. The tour was about an hour and a half. It was so hot I doubt we could have taken more. It began at Fanuiel hall and ended in Boston Common. The Freedom Trail is a MUST for anyone visiting Boston! This is the easiest way to see all of the historical sites around the city. There are 14 stops along this 2.5 miles trail. The trail is also marked by a red stone path on the sidewalk and markers at every stop so there is no way to get lost or miss anything. They also have two visitor centers and information stands along the way. One is at the beginning in Boston Commons and the other is in the first floor of Faneuil Hall. There you can get maps that show the trail and explain each stop on more detail. They also have rangers there to ask any questions to. These are also where the easiest bathroom stops are. This trail will probably take all day or two days to complete if you want to stop in and really see some of the historic building. We broke it up and did the first half one day and then stopped for dinner. There are plenty of restaurants along the way along with cafes and bakeries. There are also some really awesome things to see that aren't listed on the trail, but will take you right by. For anyone who is a fan of history, or even if you aren't, the Freedom Trail is an amazing way to spend your time in Boston! read more
