I used NBKC bank for my mortgage and then again for my refinance, with their loan officer Caleb Zhao. I have been very happy with NBKC and find them to offer very low rates, and are fair and honest. Caleb is always very responsive too. NBKC has a nice loan calculator feature on their website that shows you how much time you can shave off your mortgage repayment by doing a prepayment. The only negative thing I could say is last time they sold my mortgage to Rocket Mortgage and I didn't like them nearly as much. I hope NBKC keeps my mortgage for longer this time around because I really like dealing with them. read more

As a small business owner, I was receiving payments made from various forms. Cash, credit card, checks, etc. One check i received from a customer's turned out to be fraudulent and I filed a police report. However this bank saw this as a high-risk and terminated my account. I found out about the check when I received a "hold" notification then started tracking the source of the check. However, sometimes these customers are pretty good at deceiving people. Anyways, when I called the bank customer service, we confirmed why the account was closed. They said they tried to email me several times but the email bounced back, never reached me. Then what about the other emails and notifications I receive from this bank? They got through. It seems this bank was just coming up with excuses to find ways to terminate my account in an expeditious way, not notifying me and not calling me. They punish small business owners because of the stupid actions of our customers. I never had a problem with this bank for the past 4 years but then this happens? I will be glad to take my business elsewhere and I hope they learn a valuable lesson in how they adjudicate account actions. read more

I wish I could give this bank zero stars. Do not use NBKC for a mortgage refinance! They are dishonest and will do everything in their power to delay your closing and exponentially raise your closing costs. The initial disclosure they sent said that our closing costs would be less than half of what they ultimately wanted to charge us. I have never worked with a worse company. It was almost comical how many reasons they came up with for having to delay our closing (all things on their end). For each delay that THEY caused, they wanted to charge US more money for it. At one point they tried to blame the delay on the title company and claimed that because of the title company they couldn't close on time (this was after they already had extended the closing date and charged us for it). At that point, I told them I would find my own title company. The same day I found a title company that got everything ready to close the same day. The title company manager said that the problem was NBKC. She said that in 40 years of processing loans she had never seen a bank unwilling to process a mortgage like ours (others subsequently confirmed what she said). Finally, after having the manager of our new title company talk to the loan agent at NBKC and personally expressing their concern, NBKC agreed to let the title company prepare the title. You would think that would have sealed the deal and we would have closed, but NO! They subsequently tried to use three different reasons for delaying the loan closing (and of course.... you guessed it... charge us more for it). Every SINGLE reason was a problem on their end. We are now looking at other mortgage companies. The problem is that we locked in with them in good faith, but now interest rates are higher. Do not go with NBKC for a refinance! read more

Although I was grateful for the refinancing of our home, the experience with NBKC was terrible. Jeremy Bell was our contact person. He was very inconsistent and most of the time wouldn't return calls, texts or emails in a timely matter. His lack of communication almost cost our VA loan to not go through. I threatened to seek legal council. That's when Jeremy's supervisor, Kirby Hinton, stepped in and took over. It's because of him that this loan was put together and funded. Horrible experience on my jumbo refinance. Started smooth, then Vic DeSantis my "loan originator" told me I had to buy a Costco membership for $250. After my appraisal was paid for suddenly they need to see more cash for reserves. Not an extra 2000 or 3000, but $28k. I sell some stuff and have the $28k in about ten days, but a few days later, they want to see $50k cash. No explanation on why. Vic goes on vacation, rates drop, but I'm stuck with my current loan as NBKC has no rate guarantee. I need to pay $13k in points, which would have been covered by the rate drop. I tell Vic I'm willing to wait 30 days to avoid paying the points, and he doesn't respond to me for over a Week. I'm being told by NBKC to NOT pay my mortgage as my loan is in the final stage of underwriting at this time. After this long wait with no answers to my emails or voicemails, Vic drops me a 1-liner email telling me he "did the best he could" but I need to show $300k+ cash reserves and he can't make a deal work. This is fifty (50) days into the refinance process, when I've jumped through every hoop and paid every bill NBKC has asked me to. Yes, I'm self-employed, yes it's an expensive house, but keep in mind, I have over 40% equity in my home, I have solid tax returns easily showing I can afford the home, and I have owned my own business since 2011. Also, none of these facts NBKC keeps "discovering" were hidden, they were provided before NBKC even ordered the appraisal. What a giant waste of time and money, worse still, I had been comparing 3 loan Companies and ditched the other two, after all three ran my credit. Now I get to start over with a fresh round of hard credit pulls, because Vic DeSantis is too lazy to know his own bank's policies. Went through a strenuous process of identifying myself for a business bank account to have them receive the final documents and deny my application. With the understanding from one of the reps that I would be able to apply for the account with a driver's license that expired during quarantine as long as I provided other materials (other forms of ID and a statement showing residency) to support my identify, I proceeded to apply. I went through the process of verifying myself and was still told that I needed valid ID's so I paused on the application and I applied for a new license and even a new SS card so I could continue once they came in. After waiting weeks for my new ID's, I returned to the application and submitted them with a utility bill that I sent in the original application to prove my identity. The PDF was locked during the original submission so I sent in a bank statement with my address since I didn't know how to unlock the document. I was rejected on the bank statement and I sent over the bill again once I figured out how to unlock the document. After 5+ more emails back and forth about which documents worked, I was told after submitting two valid ID's and the original approved bill that the bank didn't feel "comfortable" with opening my account. We didn't get into even verifying my business documents, just based on my identity the bank didn't feel comfortable. Not sure if I come off as an uncomfortable person via email or the bank naturally operates in like this because of a bumpy process but I wish I got a call from a rep explaining my case since i followed their instruction rather than all the effort of going back and forth just to be denied coldly in an email. Be prepared to have a "blanket lien" placed against your business ....regardless of then loan amount. For example, my business is worth over $1.6 mil and I borrowed $50k from NBCK but instead of placing a lien for the $50k they placed a lien against the entire business!! Didn't see this in the fine print which is why I'm warning you. I will absolutely call your office to resolve this. Thank you. You are correct in that BHG prepared the loan. However the loan was transferred over to NBCK and the "blanket lien" is placed in NBCK name. I guess I should tell the borrower to beware of both banks in that you will have a blanket lien placed against the entire value of your business regardless of loan size. In my case they placed a blanket lien against a $1.6 mil business for $50k. Borrower may miss that point so I'm just here to let them know. read more

Can I give 10 stars? First, they offer Costco members a flat $250 closing cost deal, and also offer lower rates than anyone around. Judging from the excellent reviews on the internet for so many of their loan officers, I would guess the culture at the bank is one of high energy, attention to detail, and making happy customers' dreams come true. Jeff Hiller, the Loan Originator (NMLS #1017789) to whom we were randomly assigned, was in near continual communication with us and our realtor from the start--even assuring us on Memorial Day weekend that he was only a call or email away! He was absolutely the definition of Superb Customer Service and the bank should be very thrilled to have him represent them!! (And btw, I was "disappointed" at first that I couldn't request one of the other names I'd read in reviews and was assigned the first one who answered the call--Now I hope if I ever buy another house, I'll be able to have him again!!! SERIOUSLY, we just closed tonight on a house and I am not exaggerating that without Jeff, we would have lost the deal. You see, we made a cash offer and had planned to get a mortgage after it closed, but decided that if it could close on time, we'd save fees from cashing in our IRA and not risk another imminent interest rate increase. After the inspections were complete we had two weeks until closing. The sellers would not agree to amend for a mortgage, but if it would close on time and if we'd cover any appraisal discrepancy, why would they care? (On the other hand, if it was late, they could and probably would keep our earnest money and pull the deal as it had been a bidding war originally.) Jeff said that since our financial situation was so clean, and I had most of the necessary docs at hand, he was confident we could close on time, and when the appraiser went out the very next day, we felt even more secure. Unfortunately...the appraisal was not complete and th appraiser was MIA--not returning any calls, several forms weren't accepted by the underwriter or were missing, and on the final day, we were about to lose everything! I had the same experience as Dmytro. I have tried to open a business account with this bank 2 months ago. They gave wrong information as to the required paperwork. After submitting all the information they argued with me about my business location. It took them an additional eternity to open the account. Finally they opened it, and now they are putting holds on my deposits on checks that were issued by reputable institutions. Edit: NBKC reached out to me and put me in contact with someone who listened and was able to address all of my issues and solve my problems. Policy may continue to hinder people who have certain requirements but at least there is hope. Just the fact that they went above and beyond to address and solve my concerns really makes me appreciate this bank even more than I already did. Finally a bank that has a department that listens to customers. THANK YOU NBKC for helping me and giving me solutions to my problems. After a few recent interactions I find myself no longer as happy with NBKC. They went down for days during the pandemic and I couldn't even use my debit card or withdraw cash and their handling of it wasn't very good. They lowered the daily ATM deposit limit at MONEYPASS atms; didn't tell me, then tied my cash deposit up for days.There have been other things as well like how their personal loans and most of their CD products aren't available to customers who can't come to a branch; yet they talk over and over about how they are a great "ONLINE" bank. Yesterday was the final straw for me when I contacted customer service about raising my ach limit and was advised due to my average balance it would be a no. They weren't even willing to listen or maybe talk to me to find out why I needed it raised. Maybe I won the lottery and 500 a day wont cut it but they were not accommodating to me at all. It made me feel so discriminated against. No bank should make you feel that way. I would recommend Dan Steinbrink to anyone looking for a mortgage. I was referred to NBKC by Costco. Well I live in Los Angeles, they are in Kansas City. My real estate broker told us that to have our offer seriously considered we needed to deal with a local lender, and she recommended a mortgage broker she had dealt with before. This broker made it out that this would be the most difficult thing she has ever done. I think she was exaggerating since she has escaped from communist Eastern Europe. I have a new job where I make my living on commission and I've only done it for a year. She said she could only do it using my wife's income, and required documentation that was time-consuming and difficult to obtaincomma including an irrevocable agreement to withdraw the mortgage payment from our retirement savings for 3 years. Dan on the other hand made things easy and straightforward. The documentation that he required seem very logical and easy to obtain. We had a pre commitment letter from him in a several days. Once we had made an offer, the transaction ran smoothly with little hassle. Dan's follow-up was excellent and kept me informed at each step along the way. Spent two weeks trying to set up a business checking account, sending all my documents to verify my business license, tax ID, etc. Their "secure" communication is horrible, they send you emails telling you to apply for a one-time-pass-code to get access to each communication, but the passcode expires in 15 minutes and it takes 20-45 minutes to receive the passcode email so it's a complete waste of time. I ended up calling them for each and every communication. Once they sent me "Congratulations, your account is open" email I had to call AGAIN for my credentials to log in to online banking. I only received a debit card, no account number or routing number, no temporary checks to use to order checks... I had to use their app to try to locate any account info. Second week of having the account as soon as I was ready to link pay services and order checks they asked for my website address... I replied with the address and told them it was still being constructed. With no other communication or questions, they sent me an email stating the account was closed for "non compliance." This was a wasted effort in every sense for both parties, totally unprofessional in their demeanor and communication, will never consider them for banking needs again. read more

I worked with Steve Miller and team from NBKC on our home in Lakewood Ranch, FL. This is our fourth home we've purchased and financed and by far the best. Steve gave us the lowest loan rate and fees out of over 10 lenders and was highly responsive. All my emails and phone calls were answered promptly. It was a VA loan with no lender fees, plus a credit of over $900 (we are Costco members). I don't get excited over home mortgages too much but this was one was truly amazing. RUNNnnnnnn. Lending is a hard thing for most consumers, so having a great lender and loan officer is critical. I work for a real estate company and so I work with a ton of lenders - and there is a huge difference in quality and "do what we say" versus "say what you want to hear" in the industry. I had experience with National Bank of Kansas City at my last company - was also horrible, but this last experience was so bad I had to yelp about it. I can honestly say I have never encountered a lender that blows so much smoke, maybe it was just the particular loan officer, but literally built confidence so high of borrowers, said everything is approved then did not deliver. Even reported loan was all set to all real estate agents, but it was not. This was for a client - the loan officer told us that everything was ready to fund - only to say a week later that they can't do the loan. I have NEVER seen something like this in my 10+ years in the real estate and banking industry. When other lenders took a look at the file, took them 5 minutes to say the loan could not be done as VA. 5 Minutes. But this "we do more than anyone when it comes to VA, trust me", then took over a month to figure out they were wrong - is simply ridiculous and could have been disastrous for clients. So RUNnnnnn, don't believe that volume means they know what they are doing or that they do it well. Maybe some of the loan officers know their stuff - but have to go off of the one we had correspondence with. Honesty would have gone a long way. read more

We found NBKC through Costco to do our refi. The rates were good and Travis, our Loan Consultant at at NBKC, offered competitive rates and has been very knowledgeable on the process. Fast forward two months later and we still haven't closed on our refi. NBKC has not been able to meet their past 2 closing dates that were listed on our paperwork. When we started interacting with NBKC, our experience was phenomenal. Our loan officer was prompt to reply, readily available and a pleasure to work with. Fast forward to two weeks before our closing. He was out of the office more than he was in, was not responsive to emails or phone calls and the week of our closing my husband discovered that the lender made an error with the closing documents. Supposedly there was a new computer system that he just could not get a handle on, and he was constantly sending out paperwork with errors. At one point my husband spoke to his supervisor who also didn't know where the figures came from. Even though this was the lender's mistake that we noticed, he told us we might not close as planned. He also sent that message to the seller's attorney and she was livid. As of the morning of the closing, we didn't even have a closing amount so my husband wired over an over estimate to be on the safe side. He called and emailed the lender to verify that the closing was still going to happen. 30 minutes before the closing as we were driving there (mind you it was 30 minutes away), the lender calls and tells him that the paperwork isn't ready and might not be today. Thankfully the closing was rescheduled to 4 p.m. that day and everyone was somehow able to reschedule. I would absolutely never refer anyone to NBKC. While they were great sweet talking us in the beginning they completely fell apart when it mattered the most. The lender we worked with had zero regard for anyone's schedule the week of our closing. Not ours, not the sellers or our attorneys'. Rather than admit his mistake and be honest about the delay with our closing, he waited until the 11th hour to tell us and was dodging calls and emails. Given the last minute stress this caused, they were not worth the credit we got towards our closing costs. read more

Like most people preparing to make a significant financial decision, I do my research ahead of time. Unlike most people, I do a ton of research and have spreadsheets to keep track of my spreadsheets that I am tracking info on. It is a passion that I should be more ashamed of. Nevertheless, I continue to do it for any and all decisions that involve more than a thousand or so dollars. With that bit of info to consider, I would like to say, until speaking with Scott Benson of NBKC, I have never met a person that I could quickly tell was more knowledgeable than me on a subject I have researched and actually cared about. I have met plenty of folks who are experts in their field that have eventually impressed me over the course of a lengthy conversation, but no one other than Scott Benson has been able to impress me so quickly with his knowledge of the mortgage industry and the idiosyncrasies involved. I inquired with 10+ lenders initially and immediately eliminated 5+ of them based on the lack of confidence I had in the company after speaking with the broker/loan originator. I continued on with 5 lenders through the application process to compare rates and establish a decent level of trust with the lender. From the very beginning, it was evident to me that Scott surpassed the others in not only knowledge, but responsiveness, frank/honest communication, patience and a complete lack of that awful salesman feel you get from so many folks in the industry. I actually had someone call me back from a very well known company over 10 times in the first 3 days. Each of those times, he could not remember what type of loan I was interested in nor my veteran status (proud veteran). It's a shame that so many people no longer pay attention to detail in businesses based on volume and leads. No need to worry about that with Scott. He recalled everything we spoke about (note taking is easy. more lenders should try it), and answered all of my questions quickly and responded to emails at all hours of the day and evening. Best of all, he was accurate on the length of the whole process from the very beginning and everything was completed even before his estimates, which was a bonus for me. This is the third time I've used NBKC and they've done an unbelievable job every time. Michelle Williams has been my loan officer each time and her professionalism and efficiency were instrumental in getting the job done. Their VA loan rates are amazing, every lender I talked too, local and national were either unable to match the rate or the lender credits provided. Furthermore, Michelle was able to close my last VA loan in 23 days! My agent and I were dealing with incompetence and total lack of professionalism by the listing agent and her "hand picked" lender which by the way I was pressured into by the listing agent and "her" lender. I received an estimate sheet with the rate and closing costs and it was absolutely atrocious. I knew I needed to do something, but it had already been a week in dealings and I was locked in a contract with a 30 day close. I called Michelle and she assured me she could get the job done. I live in Maryland and did the loan 100% over the phone/via fax/scans/e-sign and it was not difficult at all. I worked with Tim Lander and he was great. I recently purchased a home in Virginia Beach, VA and looked into multiple banks to provide the mortgage, to include a couple local guys, USAA, and Navy Federal. Amy Stuhr Paterson and National Bank of Kansas City were easily the best group that I dealt with. They provided an interest rate that was impossible to match by any other bank, beating the other banks by nearly .5% for no greater cost. This is my second home buying experience, and first with NBKC.
