I spent a week setting this account up for my company. Everything was good but then I tried to deposit a check by mobile. I called up nbkc and asked how do I do this. The only information given was " make sure you have a picture of the front and back of the check" simple enough right? I did just that I had a picture of the check and took a photo of that photo to deposit the check. I've done this several times at ither banks. They first wanted to mislead me and fight with me (first guy i spoke with wouldnt let me speak, and then blew up on me amd hung up the phone) saying they were closing my account because I work in the hemp industry. I explained what hemp was, that it was legal under the farm bill of 2018 and everything was good. But then they decided to close my account because I took a picture of a check off a screen because I didn't have the check infront of me amd needed to pay employees. No where on their website does it say this is not allowed and directions for mobile deposit are vague on the website with it saying "take a photo of the front and back of the check." Which I had done. After fighting with them on it they decided to screw up the time I have in my day forcing me to find another bank after I got everything set up all because I took a picture of a check for $300, not a $20,000 check, not even a $500 check. All for a $300 check after they were vague and said to take a picture of the front and back of the check. This company violated the following with their actions or lack there of; false advertising, fraudulent misrepresentation, and negligent misrepresentation from both the employee I spoke with as well as on their website. UPDATE: Within minutes of leaving my review NBKC reached out to me. Spoke with Brigit in Customer Care and she really knew what she was talking about. There are some workarounds and she will have another expert speak with me about that (possibly a paid service called Positive Pay), but I do wish they would update their system to remove money from the available balance when checks are written without needing to pay for an online register with their Positive Pay service, but I give them 5 stars for customer service. They really do go above and beyond, and in general they truly have no fees. I have used them for years as my personal bankers, and they have been great. I used NBKC to fund a VA loan for my new construction home. The loan closer shifted a tax credit in my loan paperwork to pull my first payment forward from August to July. This was unknown to both the loan originator and I. All verbal and email communications stated my payments would start in August. I was presented a contract with a July start date at title. The loan closer stated they could not reprocess my paperwork to ensure my loan funded that day which puts me at risk of losing my home. It felt like a used car dealership tactic. Anita smith was completely unethical, tried to cover up her actions, and wouldn't step forward to ensure I could close on time with accurate paperwork. This is our second time dealing with this bank for mortgage needs. They are amazing, and I'll keep going back to them and our loan officer Damian Haskamp, for our future mortgage needs. Our first home purchase was a VA loan in 2016 and Damian took great care of us, explained everything to us in an easy to understanding way. There were some initial hiccups due to misunderstandings and communicating with the lender via email, but we quickly resolved everything timely and quickly. NBKC's mortgage rates could not be beat. We did our research, even through our normal banks we usually use that typically are great and are hard to beat (USAA and Navy Federal). NBKC beat them, in both cases by many tenths of a percentage point. It was a no brainer. We just decided to refinance here in 2019, and I knew immediately who I wanted to go through and who I was going to contact. He has guided us through this process quickly and efficiently. On a side note, we live in Las Vegas and nbkc isn't located here. But, I'm extremely comfortable with doing my banking online and via email. Everything but one item can be digitally signed online and even the item that requires a wet physical signature, you just print it, sign it, and then scan it back in. SUPER easy process doing a mortgage remotely. Additionally, if you have a Costco membership, they offer benefits for rates and sometimes closing costs benefits. It's all based upon market conditions and thus always changing, but Costco membership carries the added benefit. If you decide to go with them and have a local Costco, grab the basic membership first, and save some additional money. If you are looking for the lowest rate WITH professional and prompt service, call up Damian (913-383-6443) & nbkc bank and let them take care of you. It'll save you money in long term with lowest rate as well as headaches trying to find the lowest lendor locally. You won't be disappointed. read more

TLDR; Bait and switch tactics with their rates. Avoid them if you are trying to obtain a home loan. I discovered this bank through Costco as they offer a discount on origination fees and advertised the lowest 30-year jumbo refinance rates. I was contacted by one of their loan officers, Derek, and I explained that I have been shopping around for the best rates and that the best rates I found were ARMs which I was perfectly willing to do. After describing a very accurate and detailed picture my credit and financial situation, Derek claimed that he could match the ARM rates that I was getting quoted with a 30-year fixed term with 0 origination fees. Of course I asked for his quote in writing (which he later emailed) and I proceeded to go through the whole application process for my wife and I. I completed my application within 24 hours and to my surprise, the quoted rate in our application was a whomping 0.25% higher than what Derek originally quoted me. Of course Derek had many excuses on why the market wasn't favorable and rates just happened to go up a whole quarter percent between the 24 hours of his quote and my application. But he conveniently "locked" in this higher rate for us without my permission so that it would "protect" us from the rate rising any higher than already has. I explained to Derek that I wouldn't proceed until the rates dropped to what he originally quoted me and to let me know when it does. Instead of simply doing what I requested, Derek continuously tried to sell me on why I should just proceed with the higher rate and even tried to sell me other unfavorable types of loans. After about a month of various back and forth emails with reasons and excuses on why rates were going to trend upwards, I got tired of it and simply ask Derek if could simply contact me when or if he could match the rate that he originally quoted me. Instead of simply saying yes, Derek decided to redirect and give more excuses. After that, it became very apparent that Derek was never interested in getting me the lowest rate. He uses a sleazy bait and switch tactic and (like lots of banks) realizes that most people are most likely to just proceed after having their credit pulled during their application process. Instead he just waited a bunch of my time. Note that this is not my first time going through a home loan process. I've had 3 different transactions of home loans for either purchasing or refinancing and have helped many of my clients with their loans as I am a licensed real estate broker. Aside from the dealing with scammers on Craigslist, I've never experienced anything like this in my life. Yes you will be tempted with their advertised low rates but do not fall for it. I highly discourage anyone from wasting their time with Derek and NBKC bank. In the end, I decided to move on with the bank that was still offering the lower ARM rate (and the rates actually went down for this bank and many other banks). read more

Our VA Loan Refinance process started in late May 2019. It took until early October to complete and then only when we threatened to start a lawsuit. Jeremy Bell, the Loan Officer, delayed requests time after time until it was almost too late to complete the transaction. His supervisor, Kirby Hinton, stepped in and did an amazing job in completing what Jeremy couldn't or wouldn't. We are grateful for the completion of the refinance but not at all happy with the unusual amount of delays. read more

Stay away. Complete waste of time and energy and VERY shady business practices. My husband and I worked with Jeff Young at NBKC to get a mortgage for our house. 'Worked with' is a loose term. It was more like dragging a dying dog to water. Jeff lied to our face on multiple occasions, wouldn't keep us updated when new things were needed or when something happened, and then blatantly suggested over the phone to commit tax fraud. To start, during my very first phone conversation with Jeff, I told him we planned on using some Crypto Currency assets for our down payment. He said that he had worked with Crypto Currency and it wouldn't be a problem. I asked multiple times if there would be any problems with having crypto assets and using them for our down payment because I know a lot of banks haven't started accepting crypto assets yet. He said multiple times it wouldn't be an issue and he could handle it. Then, throughout the process he would ask questions that very clearly showed he knew absolutely nothing about crypto. I should've seen the signs and went with another bank, but I thought we were too deep at that point and he kept saying he could make it work. Fast forward a few weeks when we are nearing the last of our contingencies, now he has a lot of issues with the crypto that he didn't mention before. We had to push back our contingencies multiple times because Jeff wouldn't give us the green light on the loan. During another conversation early in escrow, I asked how much of our crypto assets we needed to liquidate and when we needed to have it by. His response was 'As much as possible and as soon as possible'. He wouldn't give us a definite or even ballpark amount and no goal date. We pulled out what we thought would be close to our 20% down payment the next week. He later said that it wasn't enough and we waited too long. He used this to blame us for his part taking longer than it was supposed to. In the heat of it, when we were supposed to be a week away from closing escrow, he said we needed to show different documentation on the crypto than what we had. He said that if it came from a family member, we could use it. We would need to get someone to write a letter claiming to have gifted us the crypto assets. He knew the crypto wasn't from a family member. Doing this would be committing tax fraud. I asked him again for clarification of what he meant and he said 'you can't use the crypto unless it was a gift from a family member'. I said 'but it wasn't a gift from a family member. We showed you as much documentation as possible on it and told you it was income.' He again said 'Yes, but IF it was a family gift, it would be fine, if you know what I mean'. No, we are not commiting tax fraud for you Jeff. In that last week that was full of stress and pushing back contingencies and potentially not closing on time, we started to email him multiple times throughout the day asking for updates. He kept saying 'when I know anything you will know'. Then after hours of no communication, we would ask for an update and he would tell us that something else was needed and more paperwork was ready. So no, he didn't update us when there was something unless if we asked. So we kept asking. He straight out told us to stop emailing him. That was the absolute last straw. If he would've just given us updates like he said he would, we wouldn't keep asking. Again, lying to our face. Jeff very clearly didn't know what he was doing and didn't think we were worth his time. He caused a lot of extra stress that could've been avoided if he had just communicated what was happening and not lied to us on multiple occasions. Then to top it off, the suggestion of tax fraud really set it off. He knew what he was suggesting and said it anyway. We will absolutely never use NBKC again and try to save everyone else the heartache that Jeff Young caused our family. read more

We found NBKC through Costco. The minute I submitted the quote, I received a phone call from Maggie Nguyen (913-945-2543). She was so great to work with! She was always very responsinve (even during after hours and holidays!) and on top of everything. We got the best rate from NBKC (I checked 3 different lenders) and the loan was non-contingent on the sale of our current home, which was very important to us. We had a 2 weeks delay in the process because of the seller, but thanks to Maggie we closed only 4 days past the initial close date. First things first, use your Costco membership to save thousands on loan fees. Second, you'll get a lower rate. Third, pick Jeff Young as your loan officer as is the real deal. He provided estimates for me halfway through my 30 day purchase. He was my backup until the last second and he was able to jump in and patiently recoup the deal after my primary lender could not close as estimated. He should be your primary lender even if you're not local to his bank. I'm in California and it was actually advantageous to have him in Central Time as he could hash out things before you even start your day. I'll be recommending Jeff to everyone I know. This is my third home purchase so I have enough to compare against and he's top notch. It makes sense why he's designated to handle the Costco program. Thanks Jeff! You're the best. I dealt with an unprofessional, pushy, arrogant and unhelpful agent regarding a VA loan. This is my first home loan so I had a lot of questions and concerns. The agent was not interested in explaining the process or answering all my questions. All he wanted to due was get me to fill out an application. Hopefully I will be able to update this to a better review. I do not live near a branch and had 2 very large CD's coming due. I was told the only way to get my money was to pay a fee for funds to be wired, or they would overnight a cashiers check for free. I chose the later since overnight mail is closely tracked and fairly secure. The next day, no overnight check. I went to my account online to see if $ was sent, the information on the accounts have completely disappeared, and nothing noted under the transactions tab! I can't even see the balance of the amount sent. I then checked my emails, NOTHING from NBKC.....they certainly sent enough emails when I opened my accounts! It took 2 calls and over 20 min on hold to reach a live person. I had to request a tracking number from them. It is 2 days later and I called again to ask exactly HOW the check was sent, as there was no update on usps.com for the last 30 hours with the tracking # they gave me. I am now waiting to get an email with the closing balances and what type of mail it was sent thru. I had to escalate to a manager to request that. They also told me "they don't overnight cashiers checks" although that is what I was told by their representative (who is now denying it) and that is what I based my decision on. Let's hope that mail shows up in the next few days. Overall, no one has been well informed there and they are more than willing to lay the blame on the customer. They helped me look at the numbers to decide if a VA loan would work better than a conventional. I do data analysis and the methodology was spot on. Our loan officer was very responsive. The guidance was much appreciated. The sale was by owner and we didn't have a realtor. We also needed to close quickly. Honestly they don't even deserve one star. We have had nothing but problems with NBKC. We moved out of state and ended up homeless with our 6 kids for 11days because of them. They made endless promises. Then after our mortgage got bought by another company NBKC only reached out to us by email and tried saying we owe them a mortgage payment, but they never sent a bill out to us, only a letter saying that we will be going through another mortgage company. NBKC has horrible customer service. Even our realtor had a very difficult time getting a hold of the lender on multiple occasions.
