This hospital is absolutely amazing! I don't typically post reviews, but we cannot thank the staff at NC State Vet Hospital enough. We brought our boxer to them during an after-hours emergency. Not only was the ER team incredible, but they were able to call-in their cardiology team for a same day evaluation. They took such amazing care of our baby. The doctors, students, and staff were incredibly kind, empathetic , and thorough in their approach. They worked within our budgeting constraints while also providing the absolute best care possible. The ER team, with support from cardiology, were able to drain nearly 3L of fluid from our boxer's abdomen and lungs. The procedure went seamlessly, in large part due to their expert hands. Afterwards, they came up with a treatment plan for his heart disease to keep him comfortable and here with us for as long as realistically possible. All lab work and diagnostics were done on-site, and we were able to schedule our 2-week follow-up with cardiology right then and there. The amazing doctors also followed up with us the very next day to see how our sweet baby was doing. I truly cannot say enough nice things about this hospital. I also wish to shout out the front desk staff. Some of the other reviews have said that they were unprofessional, but my experience could not have been further from that. When I called ahead of time, I was sobbing and in a panic. They spoke to me with such kindness and empathy, and were able to calm me down enough to explain the situation and give them our ETA. They never made me feel silly or bad about being emotional. When we arrived, they checked us in quickly and provided me with tissues when I inevitably started crying again. They were polite and professional throughout every single interaction I had with them. Working in vet med is notoriously stressful and heartbreaking, and these ladies handled our entire interaction with grace, understanding, and kindness. Every single staff member we encountered was amazing. They are truly a world-class vet hospital. read more

My cat has been a patient here for a year within their internal medicine department, specifically the nephrology and urology department. My cat has a very rare condition and while living in California, was under the care of UC Davis and an internal specialist based in LA. My experience with NC State has been drastically different than my experiences in CA. NC state is extremely difficult to communicate with and they refuse to listen to patient concerns. In my entire adult life of having animals, I have never dealt with a veterinary facility that was so incredibly lacking in their ability to answer the phone and listen to their clients whom they claim to be serving. I would advise against using them if one of your goals is to have effective communication and support. They treat you like just another number and couldn't care less. read more

I rate NCST Veterinary Hospital only on the billing aspects of this hospital. The doctors and assistants have been excellent. But, somehow someone needs to look into their billing department. My dog spends considerable amount of time at the Neurology department and the doctors (to include emergency room doctors) are very good through my many, many experiences. The emergency room doctors are amazing.. It's the reception staff are not very friendly. The ladies are Direct and are hiding behind computer monitors so they can't even see you when you come in. Saw a girl run in needing help with her large dog in her car that could walk and she needed help. A couple minutes later 2 techs taking their time run a gurney to the car a the front door. It's very expensive and this hospital is supported from our state taxes..but the prices are like a private hospital. read more

I took my beautiful eight and a half year old king charles spaniel to their hospital hoping they could help with his chronic kidney disease. Overall I felt they really didnt care much for him and didnt really try to save him. They did do diuresis which did help at first. But when that started to be ineffective dialysis was never brought up to me. It may have been impractical to do but I sure wish we would have discussed it. I feel like I let my dog down by not challenging them more on this and on the last day I just forgot to bring dialysis up - I sure wish they had. He may have been near the end of his life but it seemed like their whole focus was to euthanize him. At the end they had put a hose in his nose making him bleed (without actually using it apparently according to the person who did it) and he looked so miserable and it seemed so hopeless I said ok to euthanize him. I regret that and resent that they didnt just discuss it with me instead of having 4 people gathered around me and him - all of whom were telling me there was no hope. I will not go back there again if I can help it. I am not saying all the people there were bad or anything but nobody honestly cared for my dog the way I wanted them to. I think he may still be alive if handled better - although probably not. read more

The review is difficult to provide because the doctors and the care of animals is phenomenal, however the front desk staff are not kind or trained in any type of empathy. Listening to them on the phones as well as interacting with them in person has been a displeasing experience. I brought my animal in after being lost for 2 months. She was quickly evaluated and admitted to the ICU. She remains there and it's been difficult to be able to see our pet because communication between the medical team and the front desk seems to be in need of repair. We were referred to NC State Neurology by our vet. The outcome was not what we expected, but Dr Amaral and all of the staff we interacted with went above and beyond for our love Riddick. They were kind, compassionate and took a great deal of time with us. When it came time to make the hardest of decisions, they let us say goodbye to him outside surrounded by all of his family. A short time later we received a wonderful heart-felt handwritten card form Dr Amaral, Nurse Cassandra, and Nurse Margaret along with a lovely clay paw print. I was already beyond upset with how this appointment went, where my records hadn't been pulled up and I had to email one page of many CSU records and communications, while you had Lucy in the back. How many times did you tell me that i already said Lucy cannot have any Gentimycin? Did anyone notice the word "OTOTOXICITY" written by a professor of Otology and Dermatology who was hired to teach at CSU? In that one page of Lucy's record that I myself emailed you in the middle of the appointment, because you didn't find all my records that were confirmed to be in your system already? And even after I suggested they'd be with ophthalmology if you really needed my help finding them in your system? When you see that word, THAT'S WHEN YOU START ASKING ME QUESTIONS ABOUT HER MEDICATIONS. HOW DARE YOU LET ME WALK OUT THAT DOOR WITH THE VERY ANTIBIOTIC THAT I HAD TO SAY SHE CANNOT HAVE, SO MANY TIMES, THAT YOU TOLD ME I ALREADY TOLD YOU LUCY CANNOT HAVE GENTIMYCIN TWICE THAT MORNING? PLUS YOU SAY YOU ALREADY KNOW FROM SEEING IT IN MY RECORDS (?!?!) After 3 weeks of administering this medication despite that fact that it was oil and gel based, after I was PROMISED it would NOT BE, and PROMISED it would at least be the same saline thin like base that her regular topical ear meds that work is, and it's NOT, I'm seeing Lucy's symptoms go from a 5 to a 10, and the little hearing CSU got her back, has now been taken away. Well on a "positive" note, in regards to OTOTOXICITY, this thick gunk that's stuck in her microscopic ear canals (9 lbs with stenosis) that's on her CANNOT TAKE list, cannot reach the area deep at the drum that's chronically infected (Other Dr's have swabbed and viewed under anesthesia, to know this, this dr had no way to) so HOPEFULLY I can get this GENTIMYCIN gunk deep flushed out under anesthesia again, ASAP, and her now complete loss of hearing and 24/7 head shaking and scratching and fake yawning and now WHEEZING will STOP, then I can get her correct topical compound and injection meds that can finally get Lucy back on track. So I can then FINALLY get her cataract surgery. I cannot BELIEVE how inappropriate this is! THERE IS NO EXCUSE. THIS IS WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO TURN THEIR PHONES' VIDEO MODE ON, DURING ALL MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS TO AUDIO RECORD FROM YOUR POCKETS OR PURSE! No reply to that or my voicemail and it has been 10 days. Avoid this pathetic place!! The other negative reviews of their so called "customer service" reps appear to be accurate. The worst ever experience after spending entire day Friday August 30, 2024. Labrador experiencing severe neck pain still unresolved despite 2 earlier separate private ER's the day before. Very young Intern (Dr Kim) whom has just relocated to Raleigh. Added another pain med but didn't respond to questions about what to do if this failed. She also refused to follow up following day when Labrador still in extreme yelping/trembling, extreme pain. She finallyleft message 12hrs later offering nothing helpful & no way to reach her. Our vet referred us to NC State after our dog failed to respond to treatment for suspected lupus. Not only did they blow off our concerns that there was something systemic going on, they caused more damage by performing a procedure without updated lab work. We knew her liver was compromised because of lab work she had done 3 weeks prior to our consult. We didn't know that her liver had gotten even worse. They performed a fine needle aspiration without updated labs; she didn't have any clotting factors because her liver was so compromised. They caused massive bleeding into her submandibular space because of their arrogance and incompetence. Our dog was obviously VERY sick and they sent us home. The next morning we rushed her back to their emergency department, by that afternoon she was admitted to their ICU. Her liver enzymes were so elevated, they were 40 times what they should have been. FORTY TIMES. They couldn't make heads or tails of what was going on with her but said that a CT would help with differentials. The only problem was that it was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. So our girl was denied the CT she needed because they insisted they were too short staffed on a holiday weekend to get it done. They're supposed to be a 24hr emergency hospital. They're supposed to be the best in the state. We had our consult on a Wednesday and were sent home. We rushed her back Thursday morning. By Friday night, our girl was dead. The worst part is that they robbed us of her final moments. We didn't get to be with her. We live 2 hrs away. We were discouraged from coming earlier that evening and it was suggested we wait till the next day. 6 hours after that conversation she was gone. Her brother didn't get to see her one last time, we didn't get to hold her and say goodbye. She suffered more than she ever should have and I hold NC State personally responsible for that. I've only detailed a fraction of all the unbelievable things that happened. If I were to write out everything that happened you'd be reading a devastating novel right now. Our girl never got to see a board certified specialist, she only had residents working on her. If I could go back in time I would do things so so differently. We will never take another one of our animals there again. I don't care about the prestige of their reputation, the only thing they did for my family was cause unimaginable suffering. read more

Dr. Berman and the entire emergency and internal medicine departments gave outstanding care to my boy Smitten, during a hospitalization this past April. Not only did they give him the best care, but they also gave me constant updates and made sure to schedule times for me to visit. Since he's been home, Dr. Berman has continued to monitor his lab results and adjust his treatment plan accordingly. Before arriving at NC State, we had been to three other hospitals in Virginia. The prognosis was grim, but I wasn't accepting defeat yet. I had a gut feeling to contact NC State, and we made the trip. I'm so glad I did, they saved his life. It's a cost, of course, but I would do it all again and recommend them to anyone in a similar situation. read more

If you are looking for an Internal Medicine Specialist - do not go to NCSU! It takes them 3-7 days to get back to you for questions and the desk people are completely clueless about everything. If you get assigned to Dr. Hixson - RUN! She will not listen to you, or your pet's symptoms, and does not send a discharge summary or medical report. She also said that it was okay for my dog to be overdosing on a medication and to get an additional disease because of it, on top of the several diseases he already has. There are a few ethical issues that were also very concerning with Dr. Hixson. It's sad that it's hard to find a doctor who truly cares about their patients these days. Just go straight to Blue Pearl Internal Medicine and don't waste your money at NCSU. They charge you an astronomical bill and make your dog overdose on medications. read more

My sweet pup ended up passing away while I was out of town. NC State handled a terrible situation so gently. When I finally was home, I got a package one day and it was a set of paw prints they made for me absolutely free of charge. When I went to pick up the ashes, they were so sweet and consoling. They even waited a month or so to bill me for the services to give me some time to grieve without thinking of the expense. I will never forget how I was treated by NC State. My dog was not a regular patient here, and I am disappointed in the care that he received from VCA Triangle Animal Hospital. I wish I would have just brought him to NC State from the beginning. Any dog that I have in the future will certainly be seen at NC State because they are the very best! read more

Having only ever been to the NCSU Vet Emergency Clinic, this trip was a revelation, I'm embarrassed to admit. I guess in the stress of having to make an emergency visit, I never paid much attention to the attached building housing the different parts of the Vet School. Wow -- It's like going to a people-hospital -- multiple specialties available in one spot. I suppose viscerally I understood a vet school would have specialties, but didn't comprehend it would be more than just a vet doc or two working as part of the regular general-practice. Holy crap . . . I wish all my people doctor's offices would be so organized. Treatments and assessments here are by referral. Within hours after my vet called to refer me, I received a call from the "admissions" desk confirming / asking basic information and setting up the appointment. About a week or so before the appointment, they sent an e-mail confirming the appointment and advising of recommended information to have forwarded or to bring and with detailed instructions on how to get to the facility, where to park and lastly, containing a rough estimate of the cost (you pay when you check out, not when you arrive, unlike the process at the emergency clinic). A day or so before, they confirm again with a phone call and answer last-minute questions. The check-in was as easy as it could get. Because this is a vet school, there is an attending veterinarian, but the intake is done by a fourth-year student. The feedback and explanation of the results done by the supervising veterinarian is very thorough. He spent a lot of time explaining what they did, what they saw, answering my questions, and then later sending out an e-mail with a summary of the results and a contact number if I had more questions. If I had needed any medications for my furry friend, the prescription would have been given before I left. At no point did I feel rushed -- for which I was grateful. I didn't find out until my appointment how long it would take. Expecting to return after a few hours, I had time (barely) to finish my coffee before they were calling me to come back. This place is patient-focused from the first call to the follow-up. I never, at any time, had any concerns about entrusting my fur-baby to the ministrations of the students. It's part of the hands-on learning experience for them and for me, an experience reminding me of the dedication and love-of-animals of those in this career path. read more

The staff at this hospital exceeded my expectation! My puppy dog has a pacemaker! Dr. Leo and team corrected a cancer diagnosis her heart wasn't functioning properly! She does not have cancer! We adopted Schatzie at 3 months old and she is now 10 years old and she is a family member and with this pacemaker she can live a good life adding 5 to 6 years. 5 Stars! read more

Date: 7/10/2018 6:30pm Waiting room: 3 with 3 more arriving after Although the folks were all very friendly, it seems they tend to be inefficient in the handling of clients coming into the ER. They run tests but don't seem to follow the evidence and symptoms when making a diagnosis, or in this case, a lack of one. They said there were a lot of emergencies (which didn't seem to reflect in the waiting room so maybe previous ones left and were going to come back) and the pattern seemed to be about 45 mins between every communication they made with a client. For us, it was that way until about 9:30pm when they said they were done and had to finish paperwork to release us. At midnight, they finally realized we were still there and rushed the paperwork. Not the best experience but if you need 24 hour vet services, I would certainly consider them, however keep asking for status and be a squeaky wheel because you'll end up with a squeaky back from those uncomfortable seats in the waiting room. read more

My previous experience with NC State Vet Hospital ER had been very positive. But today I am so disappointed in them! I called their ER yesterday because my dog had been regurgitating, dry heaving, had no appetite, & was lethargic. They told me the ER was busy & had to go elsewhere. I brought my dog to an Urgent Care facility & after the exam & X-rays, I was informed by the vet that my dog had an enlarged heart & a mass in her stomach, & that she had to immediately see a specialist for an ultrasound & further care. Today I went to NC State Vet Hospital, checked my dog in & I waited in the waiting room for my dog to be treated. An hour later, a vet (Dr Susan Musulin) informed me that if my dog required medical care beyond the ER & it required hospitalization, they would be unable to treat her because they were full. I explained my dog's condition to Dr Musulin & asked if she had seen the X-rays. I conveyed to her how serious my dog's condition was. She said she had not reviewed the radiographs, and was adamant that there was nothing she could do; I had to get medical treatment elsewhere. Up until that point, they had not examined my dog or reviewed her X-rays. My dog just sat in a cage for an hour with no medical attention. They could have informed me when I walked in that they were not able to provide medical treatment; instead she remained in a cage for an hour with no treatment!! I am livid at this lack of professionalism. read more

I could not be more grateful to NC State Veterinary Hospital. LONG story short, my dog began to experience rapid weight loss and limping on multiple extremities. I went to five (yes, FIVE) vets, including 2 orthopedic specialists and a vet neurologist, and still had not received a clear diagnosis or plan despite extensive bloodwork, x-rays, and examinations under anesthesia. One of the local orthopedic specialty hospitals had even recommended an unnecessary knee surgery based on an incorrect diagnosis. When my dog continued to physically deteriorate I finally took him to NC State, where he received incredibly compassionate, thorough, top-notch care, not to mention an accurate diagnosis of IMPA - Immune Mediated Polyarthropathy (an autoimmune condition kind of similar to rheumatoid arthritis). With the proper diagnosis and proper medications he has now gained back the 30 pounds he lost in the course of one terrible month, has zero limping, and is back to his full-time job of chasing squirrels. I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with NC State Vet Hospital. I highly recommend taking your pet there, particularly if the diagnosis seems complicated or unclear after having been evaluated by your general vet. read more

This last visit they put our mind at ease, assessed our dog and released her without needing any care. Ellie was just wondering. They underfed our equine in hospital! and tried to unjustifiably stretch out our equines' hospitalization. AMA (against medical advice) , we brought our newborn foal home and cared for him per our vet- he then thrived!! Unfortunately it was too late for his mother. We will likely end up in court with them over the death of our jenny. After 4 months they still have not released complete medical records but demand final payment!! read more

Our sweet 8 year old Dachshund ruptured his L-12 disc in his spine. Our Durham vet called NC State and we were on the road to the Emergency Room before they ended the call. We were met at the E.R. lobby by a trauma nurse to receive Joby. They were very nice and spoke in a language we understood. I don't speak Doctor. LOL. They kept our baby overnight and by 10 am the next morning the surgical team was prepping our baby for spinal surgery. Throughout the procedure and all day after we received calls with updates. Fast forward two days and we are bringing our baby home and he is resting comfortably. And the staff and Surgeon still call and check on the patient. Was it expensive you ask. Yeah it sure was. Worth every penny. We have a long road to recovery but We will not give up on our boy. Thank you NC State vets. We are great ful to you. read more

Had two visits here, within a month. One visit was early morning hour (3 AM) during a weekday. The other occurred at 9 AM on Memorial Day. Both visits were very frustrating. I felt pushed to do MRI & multiple tests (which due to his age & cost, I declined). Milo is almost 16 & his age is now starting to show. I was given multiple reasons for his peculiar behavior. First visit, we left with multiple prescriptions & Milo had been given an IV with anti-anxiety medicine. The same day, Milo's regular vet diagnosed him with vestibular disease. At both visits, the staff were not compassionate - vets or vet techs. I was very upset & scared & no comfort was given. Even the receptionists weren't friendly. For an ER visit, up front, you have to pay $140, that's before any treatment is done. read more

I will never go back to NC State emergency or internal med. You'll be stuck with a resident who will give you conflicting information. Information that was said in front of me and my husband. Information that could have helped my cat had she been more careful with her words. Residents don't have decades of experience. So if your pet needs those years of experience, they won't get it. Sure, they do discuss your case with the attending physicians, but it doesn't matter. Your pet will suffer the consequences if they are critically I'll and so will your wallet. They have a month to keep searching for ways to send you additional bills. They know that the average person will find it hard to decipher the bill. So you think that you paid $5k, but just wait... it'll end up being at least $500 more before the month is out. I've received 2 additional bills since my pet was discharged. Stings even more since my loved one passed away 3 weeks after leaving their care, partly due to their conflicting advice on a new medicine my pet was given. There are other emergency vet's in the Raleigh area and surrounding smaller towns. Don't go to NC State. You're paying for their "critically acclaimed" reputation, but you're not getting anything more than another emergency vet could take give you. read more

I brought my dog in for what I thought was going to be surgery. These are my thoughts and observations. - The waiting room is spacious and comfortable but loud if there's a lot of animals. - Check in was prompt and we waited 5 minutes to be seen. - I was told her surgery was that day. Someone called me with night-before instructions and everything. They failed to to tell me it was simply a consultation and that the surgery would be rescheduled for another day. - During my consultation, another doctor entered the room and rudely interrupted the doctors explaining the procedure to inform me that surgery would be pointless. I wish someone would have told me that earlier. Overall, they saved me a lot of money by not performing unneeded surgery, but there seems to be a serious lack of communication between the departments, other doctors and clients. read more

I've waited a few months to post this since I was extremely emotional after losing my pup and reflecting on anything regarding his care was too difficult, so I wanted to now take the time to review the great folks at NC State Veterinary School (emergency and critical care, as well as the social work department). Without getting too far into the details, note that my boy was very ill. Being a senior, and ill, I was distraught with making sure he get help. We had already been to both VSH-Raleigh and VSH-Cary and after spending a s*it- ton of money, because obviously that's what you do when your pup is your child, he was worse, and they discharged him to go home with me as if it would all just work out (both VSH Cary and raleigh location are in separate reviews) but I digress.... He worsened as soon as we got home from VSH and they didn't want to help anymore, so we opted for NC State vet school. When I arrived at NC State Vet School (from now on referred to as NCSVS) I immediately felt at ease as they triaged him and got to it to make him feel better. I know we were in great hands and regretted not going to NCSVS first. The entire care process was critical, heartwrenching, but also professional and top quality. This place, since it is a vet school, they have access to so much research and testing that no other vet emergency facility in the state has. I felt that my boy had nothing but the best offered to him. All of the doctors, residents, and staff were so supportive and since I was there so much during his care, knew me by name and all would tell me updates as I walked in the door. Their level of care superceded my expectations, and anything I had experienced before. Unfortunately, my boy took a drastic turn for the worse during his illness, and I utilized the services of NCSVS for his passing. Again, no deets as it's too difficult, but they seemed to be as heartbroken as I was, yet professional and sympathetic to the unbearable pain it is to lose a loved pet. They abided by my wishes of his passing, and did some things that I asked that were perhaps unorthodox for them, but I didn't want his passing to be in a sterile environment, so I'm grateful they helped us through all of that. NCSVS also offers grief counseling and therapy sessions through a human - animal behavior specialist, Jeannine Moga. I utilized this service, and was so grateful that this was an option for me. There is just no way to state how wonderful these people are. From the front desk, the vet staff, residents, assistant, even the accounts payable - they just all seem to really care about you and your pet. So, why the 4 stars? The only reason, though it was huge to me, was that after my boy's passing, I received a call from a female (assuming a student) asking how Pharrell was doing. (Pharrell was my boy's name). I was gutted since the wound was so raw. I couldn't even imagine how this could happen. I kindly informed her that he had passed away, and that she needed to update her records. I told the staff what happened, they were apologetic, but it is something that is terrible after being in such a terrible situation with losing your furbaby. I worry they have students just go off of a list and call to check on pets who are not there when this should be done by someone on the care team who knew what was going on. The ending is, if I need extended testing, or critical care for another pet, I will always go to NCSVS for treatment. I recommend them to every pet parent I know, even though I am no longer directly in the pet industry, from one pet parent to another, don't hesitate to use their services should you ever need them. read more

Would not recommend. I called early one Sunday am to see if we could get our cat in, who appeared to have broken/dislocated his arm. They answered and told us they were in good shape and we'd only have around a 20 minute wait, so we set off. We arrived to two people waiting in the lobby and they checked us in after several minutes just standing there in awkward silence. Twenty minutes turned into two and a half hours and us having to ask what was going on (they'd taken our cat to the back when we checked in). The doctor called us back about 10 minutes later and said they needed to shave his arm (looking for a bite wound, which we knew didn't exist) and they'd be taking an xray and they needed a $500 deposit. We left and waited for a call, which came another two and a half hours later, and they wanted to perform a $5,000-$7,000 surgery at the end of the week to repair the break (we paid $625 for an exam and an xray). We said no thank you, and ended up taking him to our normal vet who kindly performed another X-ray (because they never sent it to him) and the surgery for around $1,100. If you want to get your heart broken or watch your furbaby suffer this is the place for you!! They will tell you they can help but then their schedule is always "full" for whatever treatment it is that your animal needs and you find yourself begging them to squeeze you in but they "can't". Even when we went to their emergency room and they could see that he needed treatment it still didn't matter to them. So just go to VSH....do your research because you are the only one who can help your baby. You have to make sure everyone knows you are willing to fight and do whatever it takes to save his/her precious life. Your baby can't be replaced and only you know how much they mean to you so go where you know they can help you and most importantly are WILLING to help you and your animal. Good Luck. read more

Worst service of my life! Came here on the recommendation of my vet after my dog suffered paralysis in his hind legs. Although the vet was obviously intelligent, everyone at this place was rude, cold and unfeeling. Gave me a science lesson and white boarded possible causes. When I told them I chose not to put my senior dog through a $3500 MRI and an estimated $2500 surgery for a potential slipped disc, they then admitted they didn't think it was a slipped disc but an FCE (effectively a stroke in the spine) and quickly recommended bed rest. After a quick google search, and a follow-up call to three different vets, determined that the best course of treatment for an FCE is aggressive physical therapy. Not sure how the team training veterinarians isn't familiar with this information. They didn't bother to mention that dogs who suffer from this often become incontinent and sometimes cannot pee. This seems pretty routine and something that should have been mentioned on my $200 office visit. I received absolutely no instructions on how to care for my dog in his new state. Called them to ask to speak to the vet in question (Fick I believe) about the issue. 6 hours later she still hadn't called me back. So I called again, she told me she was going on vacation for a week and would be out of the office out of that afternoon, but she suggested going to see my vet to get him looked at and he needed to pee soon or could have kidney failure. Went to see my vet on Saturday, they are not opened on Sunday. Vet expressed my dogs bladder and mentioned if we continued to have problems they would call the vet school and get them to express it as a tech appointment. Listened to them while in the waiting room call the vet school and make arrangements if we couldn't get it expressed ourselves. They said it would cost a $20 lab fee, and for us to just call in advance. Fast forward and "Megan" answers the phone and says she'd have to talk to her supervisor to see if they could do it without charging the $180 dollar office visit. She calls back an hour later, and informs me they can't do it without an office visit. As the call progresses it turns out this Megan was Dr. Fick all along pretending to just be a vet tech. (I guess she lied about leaving on vacation) She was familiar with my case and my dogs failing health, and did not even care to explain that we had met before. I have never in my life had a worse experience with any health care provider, if your dog is having an emergency and you don't want to put them through painful and expensive surgery or a $3500 dollar MRI to determine the route cause, I'd recommend going anywhere else. Maybe Ms. Fick should go back to college and take a course on empathy and patient care. I have never in my life felt more like a doctor just cared about my money in my life, when they realized they weren't getting a big fat payday they immediately dismissed me. My husband had a slipped disc and surgery and it was extremely painful and torture for him, and we don't want that for our beloved family pet. They also failed to mentioned that a huge percentage of dogs who have the surgery end up slipping a second disc, and end up being euthanized. All of this is irrelevant of course since my dog never slipped a disc. They should have offered some alternatives, I just can't believe the place training people how to be vets is so heartless. I'm especially angry that they ended up diagnosing him with an illness that doesn't even require surgery after a 5-minute visit with the neurologist. Why didn't he see the neurologist first? I'll tell you why, because they wanted me to spend $3500 on their MRI. Why become a vet if you don't love animals and the special bond they have with people? Nightmare! read more

The vets here saved my dog's life when she had acute kidney injury due to leptospirosis. I received regular updates and they really cared for her. It was pricey, but they're the best in the state and the only facility in NC, I believe, to offer dialysis for dogs. Feel comfortable bringing your pet here. read more

My experience at NC State transformed my understanding of veterinary medicine. It was not simply top notch veterinary care but veterinary care with compassion. I want to give a special shout out to Kristen Price who went above and beyond during my time at NC State. Not only did she take the time to call me each day after my cat's procedure but also went the extra mile of sending me pictures of him during his stay. She truly made me feel supported during a very difficult and emotional time. I also want to thank the wonderful receptionists at the front desk who greeted me after my 5 hour drive. Yes, 5 hours. They whisked me into an empty room, gave me water, helped me get comfortable, and were very welcoming. It might seem like a little thing but it brightened my spirits. I also want to commend Dr. Yoshikawa and Dr. Magestro for making dreams come true. For any devoted pet owner the scariest thing to hear is a diagnosis of cancer. Not only did both doctors take the time to answer my questions, talk to me on the phone, and email me (and yes, during the holiday season!) but they also made me aware of a special fund that finances treatments for pets like mine. My dog started limping and not bearing weight on one of his legs a little before his first birthday. This was the third vet I took him to to diagnose the problem and suggest a treatment plan; it's also the hospital I chose to work with. Don't let the fact that it's a 'teaching' hospital scare you away; vet students do work with the pets -- but in tandem with certified vets who are always present for the examinations, consultation, and surgeries. And they offer tons of services -- regular exams, cancer treatment, surgery, and beyond. I found VTH to be more affordable (and less snobby!) than the second vet we visited, and more capable and knowledgeable than the first vet we used. The ortho surgeon is wonderful -- professional, friendly, and concerned. He held weekly follow-up phonecalls with me for a month to check on my dog's progress. My dog had corneal surgery about 8 weeks ago, last night it appears she did something to the same eye and tore/cut the cornea in the same spot. I called my normal local emergency vet and they immediately told me they couldn't see her, as they have no ophthalmologists on staff, they instructed I call NC State and get her seen there immediately. So, I called as soon as I hung up with them and was told that they were very busy and were not taking overnight type cases. I explained what happened and she put me on hold to consult her vet. She came back on and told me they wouldn't see her as their ophthalmologist was currently in surgery and was too busy and not seeing anyone else that night and then I was insistently instructed that she HAD to be seen by someone, so be sure to have some other vet check her out (I suspect this was their CYA move?). I won't go into what an ordeal it all was from that point on to attempt to get her seen (Thank God, Ryan, at my regular emergency vet at Blue Pearl, Durham, took mercy on me and called around & gave me a few other options to call and for the TERRIFIC staff at Animal Emergency Hospital & Urgent Care on Vick St. in Raleigh who agreed after 8 clinics declined seeing her, to give me palliative care to get her through to Monday to see her regular ophthalmologist, so she has a chance at maybe keeping the eye). For ALL the great things I've heard about how NC State is the stop gap for all disasters, this being my first time needing their care (desperately), I have to say gravely disappointed is an understatement. SHAMEFUL is more the word!!! read more

My dog hadn't been feeling well for a couple weeks and after several vet visits, she kept getting worse, so we brought her to the ER. She was taken into Triage as soon as we got there and my husband filled them in on her history while I completed paperwork. Everyone was very efficient and very nice. Sadly, my dog did not make it, but that's not because the staff didn't do everything they could for us. They listened to us, explained everything clearly (even though a lot of what was going on was unknown), and allowed us to come visit her. As we came to our decision to put our furbaby to rest, they allowed us to spend time with her in one of their rooms before and after the injection. A few weeks later, we also received a paw imprint on clay of our baby, which now sits in her memorial shadowbox. NC State Vet accepts Care Credit, which is very helpful for higher dollar procedures. But I did notice that (at least for the ER and Neurology), their prices weren't as bad as I thought they would be. I did not have CareCredit walking in, so they let me use a computer to apply and we got everything settled there. TL;DR: I wouldn't hesistate to bring your furbaby here for any reason--especially emergent reasons. If one of my other furbabies ever needed to go to the ER, I would drive here instead of taking them to any closer animal hospitals because I know they would get better care here. read more
