3.9 mi, 1050 ft elevation gain, 1hr 22 minutes. Plenty of shaded parking was available. There is a porta potty and a trash can at the main trailhead. Lots of out of state folks here doing this hike- I'm sure it would be quite packed on a weekend. The trail itself was a bit overgrown and narrow in parts. Beware of game trails, I missed a turn and found myself a ways down a game trail before turning around. The view at the top is amazing, definitely don't just view from the lower trail. If you're able- climb up the rock face to see the view from the peak. It's so worth it! read more

It's been a hot minute (read, year) since I've hiked Oregon Coast. From the second I parked my car and started the trail, I was smiling!! The trees, smells, wildlife, freedom, challenge. My husband and I decided to take our 13 and 9 year old with us this time around with a pre warning that this wasn't a beginners trail. We all did fantastic and even enjoyed the winding pitch of the climb. My 13 year old has decided that rock climbing is now on his to-do list. I shall let him explore that alone, since heights are not always my favorite things. That being said, when you reach the top of this trail, the view is miraculous and that view can only be found with the height this trail provides!! I was speechless, which doesn't happen often, I found a flat enough edge to plop on and just zoned out! They don't make trails like this in Kansas. Reason #6254 why I love Oregon read more

Did the hike from the south side. I was happy that I had read online about the gravel road to the trail head otherwise I would've been nervous with our little Toyota Corolla doing some off-roading. The hike started off with lots of switchbacks and was quite steep at times. There were definitely moments that caused me to break a sweat and take a break to catch my breath, but it was all worth it when we saw the view at the top! We opted to climb up the rocky summit to reach the very top of the mountain, and boy, was the result breathtaking. It took us about an hour to reach the top and then another 50 minutes to make our way back down. We went on a Monday morning and didn't run into any other people until we reached the top where there were a few groups relaxing after the climb. Two thumbs up and definitely worth the views at the top. read more

Neahkahnie Mountain - View from the peak was so worth it! - Hiking Near Me - Nehalem, Oregon

If for what ever reason you're doubting why you live in this amazing state of ours - strap on your hikers and take a day trip here. I'm talking physical and spiritual awakening people...in fact, my muscles have continued to let me know that I have "awakened them" all day today. This hike is absolutely stunning. After a 1.5 mile trek through dense woods and a 900 foot elevation gain, you are rewarded with sweeping views of the coast; from the little town of Manzanita, which clings to the southern slope of the mountain, all the way to Tillamook Bay. Off the beaten path you can climb to the rocky pinnacle and sit and enjoy lunch (that I'm assuming you've packed...) in the sunshine. Breathtaking. Literally. The hike continues down the northwest side of the mountain for another 2 miles, and if you're willing to trudge through some muddy sections and brave enough to scamper across highway 101, you'll arrive at my favorite spot along the coast: devils cauldron. One more mile to the north and you'll reach Short Sands Beach...but we'll save that for another review. One day at the Oregon Coast and I'm convinced that I'll live in this state forever...or until the job moves me to Lagos, Portugal of course. read more

Such a beautiful view from the top! The hike itself is 1.3 from top to bottom and I would consider it an easy one. Definitely worth the time to do it! It took us about an hour to reach the top and stayed for about 15 minutes. The hike back down took about 50 minutes. read more

Great hike, but too much hype. It's pretty, definitely. And the trail is challenging in a good way. But the "top" really just looks like a space between switch-backs, and that pinnacle is just on the edge of more trouble than it's worth. And is the view that much better than the views from the turnoffs on highway 101? In other words, go for the hike, but don't expect too much at the top. read more

If you can make it to the top of this mountain on your hike (and it may take you a couple hours of huffing and puffing if you come from Oswald West lot like I did) then you will be rewarded with views so stunning that it is akin to a religious experience and you might even be moved to tears. Did this hike to SHort Sands beach via a shuttle, and it was a beautiful 6 miles. From the South Parking lot, and though I don't remember from the last time so many roots it was still a gorgeous hike and day overall. The view from the top of the peak though, isn't much different than from the trail, so my tip would almost be to skip the short trek up to the peak. It was worth doing once I suppose. My goal though was to get to the beach at the end. I'd recommend poles and good hiking shoes for the roots, though you can do it with sandals like Chacos or what not. read more

This was my first hike in a long, long time and I needed to get some practice in since I was going to also hike Humbug Mountain and Mount Shasta later on. You will definitely be huffing and puffing and sweating a lot particularly in the first 30 minutes of the hike, which is super steep, if you take the trail off of Highway 101. I would say the beginning of the hike is not that pleasant, you're just going through bush and brambles. Once you start hitting the tree line, it gets a little more interesting, you start seeing the giant pine trees which the Pacific Northwest is so famous for. The trail itself can be rocky in places and in some spots amounts to no more than boulders and tree roots which you need to clamber over. To get to the very top, you're actually hiking two separate hills, you'll get near the top of the first, then suddenly go down a it, but it is only a pass to the next hill, from there it's about another 30 minutes until you really hit the top and then you will be rewarded with one of the most amazing views there is. All of Nehalem Bay, Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler, the beaches, the ocean and the surrounding mountains laid out in front of you. Native American's consider Neahkahnie Mountain an especially holy and auspicious place, a place "where the good Spirit lives". Despite all the grunt work in getting there, once you get to the top, you'll understand why. read more

Our book club, a group of 50s-ish (a couple older than but most solidly in) read the book "Trask" about an Oregon settler's travels to Killimook territory, in which they actually lose one of their party over the cliffs along this part of the Oregon Coast. We are not seasoned hikers (most of us anyway), but figured that the view was worth the 1.5 mile/900 foot/moderately steep trail to the the top. It was. We climbed on a clear, and rare 85 degree day, and the view from the top (although certainly treacherous and narrow at the very top) was breathtaking in every direction. However......................................... For the vast majority of those who want to see the top, without the rest of less than inspiring journey down the other side, across 101 and finally down to the State Park (another 3.5 miles in total), I strongly suggest simply turning around and coming back down the way you came. START at the South parking lot entrance. The trail(s) down to the beach are muddy, not well maintained, and not well marked at all. We had a number of people (including myself) slip off of the edge of narrow trails that gave way with erosion. No injuries (except our pride), but annoying. The trails are so muddy and loaded with tree roots, that you really can't look up to see the scenery. You must watch every footfall. In addition, the winding, boring, narrow switchback, through dense hillside foliage above Hwy 101 is nothing but tedious. By the time we finally reached the beach at the State Park...the memory of the amazing view from the top had all but faded... read more

Hike it. Do it. It's so short and satisfying. Just do it. Drive to Neahkahnie Mountain, put on some shoes and hike to the top and don't fall. Take some pictures. Tag yourself and put it up on Facebook. People will think you're an outdoors person. read more

Shame on Oregon State Parks for their complete neglect of the North trail. Overgrown to the point that one person can hardly walk on the trail. There are a number of sections that are washed out and need restoration. It's going to take 3 years to bring it up to par. I'll stick to the south trail from now on. read more

The last review (Yancy) was spot on. My dog and I were drenched in fog for the whole hike, so I didn't get to assess the views, but I really didn't see any clearings near the top where one could look out over the ocean or anything. In fact, it was hard to tell where the summit was - I climbed up to a peak that was off the trail, guess that was it. The hike wasn't much of a challenge either. Cascade Head seems like a more strenuous one, even though it has less elevation gain over the same amount of distance (if you climb Neahkahnie starting at 101). The views at Cascade Head are phenomenal too. read more

Yancy D., you missed the view. You have to get off the trail and clamber out onto the rock face to see heaven. If you head down the switchbacks, you have gone too far. Go back up and take a left at the microwave relay tower. read more

I've vacationed on Neahkahnie Beach five times. The house we rent has a spectacular view of the beach and mountain. Finally, I decided to hike it on my recent trip there. Thank God I did. On a clear day, the views are stunning. There are a lot of switchbacks, which I find fun. You'll get some good views toward Nehalem Bay on the way up. My favorite part, and kind of a surprise, was the views to the north on the way up. At one point, I felt like I was among the higher mountains around Neahkahnie, which was awesome (versus looking up at or down on mountains, like usual). I even got a peek of Cannon Beach/Haystack Rock at one point. The trees, standing and fallen, and variety of flowers are really enjoyable. Though it's an uphill hike for awhile (about an hour from the south trailhead off the 101 to the summit), it's not terribly difficult. When you get to the summit (you'll know from the view), climb up the rock formation directly above you--that's the "real" summit. The easiest way is to backtrack (if you came up the south trailhead) just a few steps and crawl up the side of the rocks. They almost form natural stairs. It was a bit intimidating but doable and worth it. Although you can only see to the south, the view is spectacular. You can't see to the west or north, just so you know, but it's still very worth the effort. read more
