only been here less for about two weeks but my initial thoughts are very positive. colin the…read moremanager was super upfront addressing any concerns we had about parking, safety and security and the rooms are well-maintained. the restrooms are even clean! the rooms are small but we got a trio and a singer in there with a small PA pretty easily. soundproofing is more than fine unless you are recording and unless the band next door is rocking 100-watt marshalls and an SVT while you are rehearsing for a coffee shop acoustic set. i am talking a 90 sq ft room here. the ventilation is great. AC can get so cold that you can need to put on a hoodie and put your hands in a hand warmer. that's massive especially when you consider how hot van nuys can get in the summer (this weekend it hit 110 degrees or thereabout). 24 hour camera monitoring plus your own specific keycode access to the building (each tenant has a unique keycode which is recorded and tracked) helps with the security. also because there are probably 30+ studios here (all are lockouts) there are always people around. add to that a western bagel which is 24 hrs at the corner and you can at least know where to get a fresh bagel or muffin and coffee, milk or a soda/bottled water if you don't wanna deal with the vending machines there. will update my review in a few months but so far so good.

Pay attention to the 1-star reviews, especially those mentioning the manager, Charles…read more Unfortunately, my experience confirmed many of the concerns raised by other reviewers. When I first met Charles, I felt uncomfortable with his demeanor, but I assumed it wouldn't be an issue as long as our interactions remained limited. For years, I was a reliable tenant who paid rent on time, followed the rules, and caused no problems. I treated my studio with the utmost respect, as if it were my home. Because of my initial impressions, I generally avoided interacting with Charles whenever possible. However, that changed a few months ago. After a 16-hour video shoot, while my band and I were loading in our equipment, Charles screamed at me and aggressively confronted my singer, calling her completely untrue and offensive names. He then repeatedly threatened to call 911 while she was waiting for me in the parking lot. What made the situation even more confusing was that he had met her several times before. When I tried to de-escalate the situation and speak with him, he repeatedly told me to "shut up," then continued to scream obscenities, escalating what should have been a routine load-in into a hostile confrontation. Had Charles not been there that night, or had he spoken with us to understand the reality of the situation, there would have been no issue. We would have stored the equipment safely and respectfully, just as we always had throughout my tenancy. Instead, a routine load-in became one of the most unpleasant experiences I have ever had at a rehearsal facility. Shortly after this incident, I was forced to leave with less than 30 days' notice. By that point, I was ready to move on anyway, as I no longer felt comfortable remaining there, especially with Charles as manager. Equally disappointing is the lack of accountability from ownership. If you read many of the reviews, you'll notice a pattern of complaints. The owner's responses to those reviews often come across as dismissive and, at times, condescending toward former and prospective tenants. Rather than acknowledging recurring concerns, the responses seem to reinforce the same unprofessional attitude that many reviewers describe. When multiple tenants raise similar issues, they should be taken seriously. As for the rooms themselves, they have very little sound insulation. You can hear others practicing almost as if they are in the room with you, which can make it difficult to focus depending on the activity around you. The front door lock takes a while to open as the doorknob is janky. For all the years I was a tenant, it wasn't fixed. The facility itself is clean, and I will give them credit for that. However, of the two restrooms available, it appears that only one has been functional for quite some time. In addition, I personally found the area on Vose Street uncomfortable at times. There is a noticeable homeless presence, including tents, carts, and people frequently staying along the street. Depending on your comfort level, this may be a factor when deciding whether this location is the right fit for you. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend renting a studio here. Proceed with caution, especially when dealing with management.

This all means that I am VERY jaded to the industry and not much, at this point in life, impresses me. So, when something comes along that brightens even my cynical attitude; then it must be something special. That is precisely what the Alley Studios in North Hollywood is and 'special' is an understatement. The Alley Studios is located on the corner of Lankershim/Ostego in the epicenter of the North Hollywood Arts District. From the exterior, one would this is an abandoned building as it is somewhat run-down and there are no apparent windows anywhere. This unsuspecting facade pulls the wool over everyone's eyes as the Alley Studios is basically a legendary facility dripping with music industry history. So what exactly, IS, the Alley Studios? Imagine an incognito basement owned by the coolest punk rocker you know, marry it with a small bar-type intimate performance stage, melt it with a recording studio and creative space, and bake it to perfection with a lounge. The ending result is Alley Studios. When you first walk in from the front (front and back entrances are available), you will see a room to your left with an intimate stage area available for performances or events that transports you to the coolest bar/concert venue in the 70s/80s. Keep walking down the narrow hall to find a lounge-type room with bar and a lovely garden-esque back patio outdoor space. The Alley Studios also has a basement, recording studios, loft etc; available for artists. Basically, this IS the place for public performances or artists wanting to write and record music or just escape the outside world. Which is PRECISELY what happens in the Alley Studios. This spot has housed literally every single musical legend past and present be it recording or just hanging out. You name it and they have been there. Want some examples? The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, Roseanne Cash, Sister Sledge, Tom Petty... even to Jack White, Fergie, Chili Peppers, etc and so forth. In fact, the back lounge rooms consist of white brick walls that all the artists have signed. The Alley Studios allows you to photograph these walls but signs proclaim that no touching is allowed. Again, I am RARELY impressed but something about the energy is overwhelmingly amazing which is probably because no one would suspect this small, hidden building to have such amazing history. I mean, did you know about this place? I didn't, and I live two minutes WALKING distance from it! I went to the Alley Studios for an album release performance/party and the staff from the door to the bar was very kind. No one was stuck-up and snooty which is the usual for Hollywood/LA venues and recording studios and even the staff seemed grateful to be involved with the facility. They happily explained the venue history and pointed out the big names on the brick walls. For those interested in the paranormal, the Alley Studios is supposedly haunted with many experiencing spirits or entities. Take that as you will. The Alley Studios is just drop-dead amazing. The history and energy of the place is riveting but with an humble, quiet air. I really hope that the Alley Studios starts to house more public performances so that people can learn about it and experience it for themselves. Apparently there is a book in the works that will be pitched to publishers about the background of the facility. So whether you are a musician seeking a creative/recording space or just a fan that can make it to a performance at Alley Studios; DO check it out!
