The store offers a large and unique range of decor and various house pieces that you won't find anywhere else. The staff is always friendly, helpful and willing to offer appreciated advice with ways you can style certain items around your home. Mary Carol Garrity, who started Nell Hill's in historic Atchison, Kansas (Amelia Earhart's hometown) is one of my design heroes. I just love her aesthetic, and coming to Nell Hill's (named after her grandmothers and now located north of the river in Kansas City, Missouri) is like walking around a museum of that aesthetic- classic and comfortable, a bit heavy handed, but not cluttered, at once modern and old fashioned. If you don't buy into her underlying look, you're probably not going to absolutely love her store. But you'll still enjoy your trip- SO MUCH to see!- and I guarantee you can find a gift for someone. Who wouldn't love a candle or a pillow or a paperweight? Any accessory you can possibly imagine is available here. Every time I go to Nell Hill's it's like going into a different store. The overall look is still there, but I'm always impressed how the furniture and accessories are presented differently every time. New displays, new fabrics, new lighting, new art. I swear this staff must work 24/7. It's really remarkable. My favorite part of Nell Hill's is that literally everything you see is for sale!! That side table stacked on top of that credenza holding 100 different accessories with 5 lamps on top & 2 floral swags attached to it? It's ALL for sale!!! No other store that I can recall is like this. This is the difference between decorating and designing. Any regular ol' store can line up a bunch of beds side-by-side or have aisles upon aisles of knick-knacks, but Nell Hill's creates rooms, designs a lifestyle. Nell Hill's is a feast for the eyes. There's a reason design-obsessed people come from all over the world to experience it and why Mary Carol has been profiled often in international publications. What she has created is unique and different and fun. Even if you don't love the overarching style, it's worth a trip. There is really no place like Nell Hills in Kansas City. I go there for all my furniture, decorating and entertaining items...sometimes I just go there and walk around for pure inspiration...seldom do I leave empty handed..even if it is just one of their Nell Hills scented Home candles. Lately I've worked with Anne for some decorating assistance. She has been so helpful identifying my taste and helping choose fabrics that are exactly what I love. Taking advantage of the annual upholstery sale saved me a lot of money!! I even took my mom to see Anne and she helped her redesign her bedroom. I have shopped at Nell Hill since it was located in Atchison, KS under different ownership. ( 30+ years ) Generally, I purchase lamps, art and accessories from the KC Briar Cliff store. I had a personal designer ( independent ) who sold CR Laine furniture and her pricing was better ( even with the Nell Hill upholstery sale ) not to mention her service was EXCEPTIONALLY more professional. Sadly, she decided to retire at age 50. On a whim, I ordered two CR Laine swivel/rocker chairs through Nell Hill. It was suggested I pay in full upfront which I agreed to as the designer had been helpful and it benefited her. I waited 10-12 weeks for the chair delivery which was typical. I have four CR Laine sofas, eight varieties of CR Laine occasional chairs, counter stools, an upholstered ottoman and more. I like the product and I have always received excellent service regarding the CR Laine brand. ( two chairs did not wear as a strong performance fabric should ). They were immediately replaced with not a single issue or inconvenience ... through my original designer! Upon delivery of the CR Laine chairs, the Nell Hill delivery team noticed a flaw on one chair. It was not clear what caused the flaw, but it was noted on the delivery slip that one chair appeared damaged and a manager from Nell Hill would reach out immediately. The delivery team stated they see this problem often. They felt it was related to the shrink wrapping. Three weeks passed with absolutely ZERO contact from Nell Hill. I reached out to the designer I purchased from. She took immediate action and I was contacted within 24 hours by two different departments at Nell Hill. Both claimed miscommunication from the delivery team was the cause of the delayed follow up. My husband and daughter saw them clearly notate a flaw on the delivery invoice and take photos. Not a good look that the people in charge ( store and design managers) "blamed" the delivery team. Nell Hill wanted to send their furniture specialist out to look at the flaw. Despite it being December 23rd and having a house full of out of town guests, I agreed to let him come look at the chair. The furniture specialist ( who is also their warehouse manager ) was a delightful person and completely transparent. He stated he didn't know what the flaw was caused from and he didn't feel comfortable trying to "fix it". In all honesty, the warehouse manager and the delivery team are 100% the best part of my experience with custom furniture orders at Nell Hill. They were honest, forthright people who wanted to do right by the customer! Two weeks later, I received a call from Stephanie at Nell Hill stating that CR Laine would like to have the damaged chair returned to them so they could fix it! My response was absolutely not. I should not be expected to have one of a pair of chairs in my main great room missing for anywhere between 6-16 weeks for a mistake by the vendor or Nell Hill. ( Honestly I feel it's a Nell Hill issue) I expect to receive two replacement chairs made from the same dye lot of fabric delivered as soon as possible. At that time, they are welcome to return the two chairs to CR Laine which I highly doubt would happen. In my past experience with CR Laine, I was not asked to ship the chairs back. The cost is extraordinary as well as the time involved to transport via truck to NC . The items are returned to the designer and likely sold at a significant discount. I am certain the damaged chair would be sold at Nell Hill's warehouse sale in spring 2024. I expressed my disappointment to Stephanie and told her I was a 20+ year buyer of this brand of furniture. I know how they treat customers and what Nell Hill was proposing was not remotely customer focused. Stephanie seemed speechless and said she would get back to me on a resolution. To say the least, I am shocked by my experience at Nell Hill. I know they have experienced multiple management turnovers in the last few years. If they do not become more customer centered, I have concerns about their future. CR Laine is a well known, national brand. They will not have one small entity damage their reputation. Come on Nell Hill do better for your longtime customers and KC! read more

One of my favorite stores to visit when I come to see my parents. This past visit was somewhat disappointing. Store was quite messy, and the Christmas decor was not their usual classy style. Also, one of the young workers was quite rude and not friendly at all. Yes, it is Christmas time but I think she forgot she was in the business of customer service. I am updating this review to five-star. Although it took a minute for them to respond, once they did they promised to make it 100% right and followed through. I am extremely pleased with the remedy and with their commitment to ensuring my happiness. I just purchased a new home in the area and am having a grand time decorating it. A friend told me I should check out Nell Hill's and so I made sure to fit it into a Saturday errand run while I was nearby. I fell in love with a piece of furniture that happened to be on sale (but still not cheap). I asked them to make sure I was getting a warehouse piece as I had noted the one on display was a bit dinged and who wants dinged up furniture in their beautiful new home? Well, I needn't have bothered because not only did they knock it around on delivery leaving significant damage to the piece itself, they banged up my walls, banister, and door. It's a hot mess. Even better? The delivery guy said he would have someone call me to make good. No one did. I've left two phone messages in the six days since. No one has returned them. I have more to buy but I guarantee you it won't be at Nell Hill's. read more

I might try to be a minimalist at heart, but let's face it. Nell Hill's over the top maximalism will make all but Mies van der Rohe smile. This is traditional decor as it should be. Heavily layered. A mix of new and old. Lots of odds and ends. Accessible but high quality. The staff is helpful, and most of the time owner Mary Carol is front and center unabashedly helping people "feather their nests." So many times, her voice is practically hoarse from all of her hearty greetings and chat. The store is immense and you really need to wander slowly to take it all in. Every nook and cranny is packed with various accessories. The case goods are mostly antiques and some new. The upholstery can be purchased off the floor or heavily customized. Upstairs, there are rooms full of fabrics for custom upholstery and bedding. And the bedding. If you like grandiose and opulent bedding, this is your store. Almost everything is quite traditional, but I've found plenty of stuff that I couldn't live without, even for my more mid century modern/not so fussy space. Don't miss Christmastime here either. It's truly decked! This is one of Kansas City's best home stores and it's a plus that it's woman-owned and operated. Mary Carol has created something very special here. Don't miss out. read more

Really disappointed after the change in ownership, probably not total fault of Nell Hills but of their suppliers. Ordered custom curtains and hanging hardware in January, in March was informed the curtains had a flaw and had to be sent back for redo, finally received in late May. Hardware came in April but wrong color so had to be sent back, finally received on June 1 but only the rods, brackets and rings???? read more

People kept telling me I needed to come to this store, during the time I was furnishing my new home...and when I finally made it to the location, I could see why. You walk in to find one of those tastefully crowded with all kinds of lovelies places. Sort of Pier 1, upscaled. The style of most pieces tends to run more toward traditional though there is also a hint of modern. Areas are grouped by color families so if you're looking to find furniture and accessories for your color palette, it's pretty easy to navigate to where you want to be. Last time I was in the store (during the spring season) there were a lot of blue accent items. So tasteful and beautiful and, fortunately, in my home color scheme. There's a section that has the most amazing fabrics! If I were starting from scratch on furnishing a home, this is where I'd start. Well, technically, I'd hire a decorator first and then let her go wild in there among that myriad of exquisite fabric bolts. The employees are super friendly and super helpful. I feel like they manage to find that perfect balance of being helpful without hovering so much they're annoying. One small thing I like to buy as gifts are the Nell Hill's signature scent candles. read more

Love the store contents (creative and beautiful!), and most of the staff are VERY nice, including the owner who is an incredibly talented woman with much to be proud of (go girl! :). However, the lady that runs the 1st floor (Nancy) needs some training in customer service. Her attitude on several occasions was snooty, impatient, and cold (even rolled her eyes), and made me regret the thousands of dollars (yes, thousands) I've spent there. I got the impression that she judges a book by it's cover. (While we do have money and are very well educated, this shouldn't matter. I certainly don't flaunt it, and am very "down to earth". What matters to me is people, not brands, or labels.) I really hate to leave such a low score for a store I adore. My impression is that everyone is welcome (at least if you ask the owner) but if you ask some of the staff, they wouldn't say the same. I certainly took notice of that. I make it a point to spend my money on businesses that I believe in and steer clear of those I don't. I'm certain that the owner - Mary Carol- would not tolerate that sort of treatment if she were aware. I was so bothered, I wished I had let her know. There is something to be said for humility, graciousness, and kindness- life is so very short, isn't it? You never know how a simple smile might transform someone's day. I realize that 80% of Kansas City is drooling about this store, but this stuff is the antithesis of my design taste. I am not interested in living in a home that is pretending to be in another time period or another place- American Country, Tuscany, French Country, Colonial....etc. Cheesy. I can see being inspired by travel, but come on! Dried out bird's nests, plaid couches and ceramic cornucopia's- it's not a decor, it is a lifestyle! I am tired of purchasing all my furniture and home decor on the Internet, do we really need another store like this in KC? If you love this kind of thing, go check it out. The size and architecture of the store is impressive. However, don't drag your man along. This place is awesome - its a more suburban version of the original in Atchison, Kansas. So yes, there are some birds nests, some over-dressed beds, and a whole lot to look at. Would I do ALL of that in my own home? Oh hells no. Would I pick and choose, take a few photos on my phone, and take away a couple of cool things from a store like that? YES. I think that Mary Carol Garrity (the owner) does a nice job of presenting an extreme version of decorating in her store, allowing the consumer to take inspiration from her style. You can couple the art and other lovely items from Nell Hill's with a dining room table from Goodwill, a couch from Costco, a bedspread from Tuesday Morning and a big chair from Pier One. It's a mix and match approach, and that's how I've decorated my apartment. I think Nell Hill's is just fabulous! read more

The owner of Nell Hill's, Mary Carol Garrity, is Kansas City's very own version of Martha Stewart. She has an eye for interior decor, seasonal holiday design, paint color and home accessories. Like Martha, she has her own line of paints and books. The store carries all things home including furniture and upholstery. Having the misfortune of never meeting Martha, I have had the pleasure of being helped by Mary Carol and she is extremely nice and welcoming. She never seems disheveled or out-of-sorts. As if she is a rare bird, my favorite time to spot Mary Carol is when she is wearing riding boots and a smart scarf. The point is, she has developed a lifestyle and she is living it. Is everything in the store my look or my taste, NO, but it is an awesome place to check out if you need something for the house or something for the holiday. There is a large inventory here. Most being traditional but with a nice mix of many different styles and taste. (We just purchased a nice modern/urban metal bookshelf with reclaimed wood for a great price.) The prices are extremely reasonable because she buys for more than just one location. The sales help has always been nice, helpful and fit into the *lifestyle* of the store. This store can get crazy busy during the weekend so if you don't care for wall to wall shopping, check them our during the week day or evening hours. The customer tends to be the" ladies that lunch", or the "suburban house wife", or the "I bedazzle table-runners" kind of client, but don't be afraid, there are a couple of gay men and disoriented "I'm lost" straight men in Chiefs hats walking the store also. The store just feels dated. Doesn't look as fresh as it did when Mary Carol was the owner. Not as many changes on the floor or beds.. Most of the bedding looks like something my grandmother would like. Haven't seen a new fabric in ages. The selection just isn't as fresh as it used to be. The accessories for sale are things you could find at a hobby lobby... (glass owls, heart shaped objects) Music here is old. People working here are old. I miss seeing the owner of the store walking around and the friendliness. She would make me feel like an old friend. I've seen the new owner just a handful of times but never once have I been greeted by her. Just doesn't feel the same. I took my wife to Nell Hill's. I'm in complete agreement with jennifer. What your grandma's house might have looked like if she had been wealthy instead of living on Social Security. The edifice and architecture are imposing, similar to The Crate and Barrel out south. I wished I had taken my camera as all those plump beds in a row, with their ginghams and plaids and pastels, heaped with pillows, would have made a very interesting photo. Too bad I'll never go back. For those who haven't been to Nell Hills in a while, I would encourage giving it another shot. There are several incredibly talented interior designers as well as retail visual designers who work out of this store. They walk a fine line and are able to incorporate a mix of contemporary and traditional. Most of the furniture can be special ordered in hundreds of fabics. The fabric room is located on the second floor. We were told that one of the furniture lines allows you to have the wood on any piece (a dining room chair, for instance) painted in any Benjamin Moore paint color and then cutom fabric chosen for the upholstered parts. FUN! The pillows that are abundantly tossed around the store can be bought unless you want to have custom pillows made. One of the best things about Nell Hills is that even if you aren't shopping for furniture, you can walk out with some really well thought out gifts for friends (vases, candlesticks, lanterns, etc) at an affordable price point. Rumor has it, the store is so popular and they go through so much merchandise, they get a lower price point on pieces and are able to pass that savings on to the customers. That's nice. read more

Nell Hills in Briarcliff is a small piece of decor heaven compared to her flagship 'house/store" in Atchison, KS. You'll find higher priced items as well as smaller ornaments, home decor, furniture etc. This holiday season I bought two decorative lamps with custom 'greenery' for my front door step. LOVE - Great customer service and help for those of us who are 'designed' challenged. Most of the decor is American, Tuscany, French Country or Colonial... so if your home looks like it belongs in Architecture Digest or you live in Cape Cod.. be sure to check it out and you'll feel like Martha Stewart Less the time in the pokey. read more

I've ventured into Nell Hill's a few times now. It's a great place to wander around and take your time finding new things in every corner. I will tell you though that I felt like I was being harassed by a sales clerk constantly, and the prices were not always in-line with the quality. Even though they have always been a bit pricey, but you could always trust this small business. My wife and I got a gift certificate, so while we were up north, we decided to stop in and use it. Everywhere we looked the prices were outrageous. Lamps for $300 with most of which were interested had no indication where they were made, so likely made in China or imported from other country who exploits their workers and likely marked up unreasonably. They had other really nice antiques, again unreasonably marked up, to me anyway. We decided to use the gift certificate for a small item which was marked as an "antique," we liked the design, but was of course more than our gift card, but we liked it. As we checked out, we were informed that "antiques" were non-returnable. Ok, I can understand that, well not fully because every business should have some reasonable return options on everything. That made me curious, I asked for the date of the item, since they marked it as an "antique" and "antiques" had a special no return policy. The staff had no way of verifying if it was an antique. That perturbed me a bit, since it was overpriced and labeled as an "antique." The staff looked at me like, why was I questioning it? The staff said they did not know because "a guy" brings the stuff in once a week and it is already priced. Well, that makes it all right! "A guy," who they did not know, labeled it an antique, and priced it! Wow, what level non-returnable, but could not prove it was an "antique." How arrogant can a business be by offering this and looking at me like I was out of line? Well, we bought it anyway as we had the gift card, and we liked the design. But then the clerk asked my wife if she would initial the receipt we were taking home, I guess so we would be aware that it was non-returnable. It was their "policy." Excuse me? One, we liked it, and two we knew there was a no return policy on the item, because they labeled it as an "antique." They do not trust us????? Can we trust this was an antique??? They poo-pooed that this was maybe NOTan antique, but we could not be trusted? What the heck? We had to trust their unreasonably priced, arbitrarily marked merchandise, but they would not trust us? What kind of customer service was that? We will not be going back. I suggest others think twice about it, and I would be sure it was as advertised, if you spent that much $$ on an item marked up as much it was! read more

Then the clerk asked my wife if she would initial the receipt we were taking home, I guess so we would be aware that it was non-returnable. Excuse me? One, we liked it, and two we knew there was a no return policy on the item, because they labeled it as an "antique." They do not trust us????? Can we trust this was an antique??? They said nothing about this was maybe not an antique, but we could not be trusted? What the heck? We had to trust their unreasonably marked up merchandise, but they would not trust us? What kind of customer service was that? We will not be going back.
