Nelly's is a Dominican restaurant located in the Town of Newburgh. It's literally a hidden gem right next to Papa John's. If you're just driving by you've probably missed it a few times like I had. I've ordered now a few times and must say its quality is consistent. When you walk in it's clean and plenty of seating. Drinks and dessert refrigerators are against the right wall. Nice selection of beverages. Their walk up counter is clean and brightly lit. Food on display looks delicious and fresh. All the employees that I've seen have all been helpful and respectful. A warm friendly atmosphere. Arroz con gandules and pernil is my go to every single time. I ordered their Sopa de Fideo when I was sick a couple weeks ago and it hit the spot! I tried the flan and tres leche once and it wasn't good and tasted "off". I can tell that the Arroz con gandules was cooked with a really good sofrito and the pernil is moist and flavorful every single time. I eat twice from a small plate. I believe it was like $12. I came here from the likes of loving the mini combo at "El Valle" and being a regular there, so I assumed that all Dominican spots would be able to at least match the quality of a simple meal. That was my first mistake. I've also seen other Nellys, but strayed away due to the reviews. But, you never know until you try right? That was my second mistake. While the lady who made the food was very nice, I wish I could say the same about the meal. The rice was alright, but tasted like it had been sitting for a while. I'm assuming it was, due to the fact that the place was very empty. The beans weren't very well seasoned, nor did it have that "soupy" feel that to it that I love (I used to always request extra of it poured over the rice at El Valle - If you're in BX you know what that restaurant is). The beans here, were actually mushy and looked like a paste. The 1/2 chicken was very dry and it did have SOME seasoning but it wasn't the best. However, being that I paid my hard earned money for this, I ate it since I didn't want it to go to waste. I will not be returning and the lunch combo was very lackluster. I was really excited to see that planet wings had been replaced by a Spanish Restaurant! It is a different space than it once was and it's more an open concept with there being a serving station where all the cooked food is on display. They also are actively cooking food and keeping everything fresh. I went on a Sunday afternoon for an after church lunch. The people behind the counter were very helpful to answer any and all questions in taking orders. I ordered white rice, beans and chicharrón de pollo con hueso (fried chicken chunks bone in), then 2 empanadas beef/cheese and chicken and an alcapuria which was made from Yuca not from Plantain. My dad ordered yellow rice with guandules and pepper steak and my mother who has many food allergies made a special request which they were more than happy to accommodate in terms of how the food was prepped, and where it was cooked for no extra charge. Added 2 raspberry Country Club and this was official Cuicifrito food!!! As you can see in the pictures everything tasted just as good as it looked. They had all the standards of most Cucifrito spots many city travels are familiar with. The food was freshly made if not already available at the serving station and it tasted just that. Fresh made which is always a concern when you go to a place and the food just looks like it has been sitting. Price wise it is on the much higher side than most spots found on every corner in the city but that quality of food, for that price and all the leftovers I had I gladly will give them 5/5 stars! read more

OMG!!! I just ate the best mofongo with beef stew sauce I've had in a long time, the kids had rice and beans with roasted chicken. Easy to miss if not paying attention and the one way sign can be confusing. The place is set up with a hand full of tables for inside dinning. The serving bar has an array of different meals to pick from at least six different meats, rices and typical Dominican items. They do seem understaffed for all the business they receive, nevertheless I'm glad this place is near by, I'll definitely be ordering from Nelly's again. read more

so happy to have good and quick Spanish food locally, so I finally tried here after picking up a delivery for door dash here and wanted it to try myself. the people at the counter were nice and always asked if I wanted beans with my rice's or extra sauce. got beef stew with yellow rice and beans and fish stew with white rice and beans. The beef was very tender and moist, carrots and potatoes were fork tender. the stew sauce was very flavorful and am glad for extra sauce on the rice. rice was soft and warm, beans was good saucy. now the fish stew, fish was tender, but i wish there was more fish pieces in the stew, all the veggies were tender, no issues. white rice was fluffy and warm. overall very filling to be sure when you get food here. have to try the Tres leche cake and flan next time am here. read more

The service was horrible. The lady named Janet serving the food gave my family a nasty attitude and looked grumpy as soon as we enter their restaurant. This wasn't the first time the lady had an attitude towards the customers. I hear this a lot from others. Thought we'd give this a try last night. Although the food was tasty it was not hot enough. This place is serving from steam trays, nothing is cooked to order. I ordered a half pound of chicharron which was literally cold. They took the hunk of pork from the table at room temperature into the back where they cut it up and put it on a plate with limes. I guess for take out this place would be fine. You'd get the food home and heat it up. But, everything we ate was definitely maybe slightly above room temp. The food is so good here! I'm so happy they around because I miss my mom's cooking and I can not cook for the life of me lol. I miss having some Dominican food so I'm grateful to have a few close restaurants that make some Dominican style food! How ever I wish they had Sancocho sometime. I know it's a seasonal thing because it is a lot of work but when they have it on their menu I kind crave it so much when I do see it on the menu on a specific day and I preorder it for pick up they don't have it when I arrive so I have to get something else. It kind of sucks when you do crave it lol I'm gonna have to learn to make it but other than that the food is deliciously so good and the staff that work there are so loving! I dined here tonight looking to try a new place. I got my food togo. My steak with onions was very dry and the container included 90% of dried white rice. It tasted as if the rice sat out all day. My husbands roast pork was decent. We also got beans with our food and it was in a small skinny plastic container for the two of us.? Portion relations. I didn't think a place this new would serve food this dry. Very disappointed BUT I may give them one more try to redeem themselves bEcause they are local. Stopped in to see and found a great little spot with delicious food. The hot bar was clean and everything on display looked fresh. I decided on the roast pork and yellow rice and beans. The pork was tender and every bite nearly melted in your mouth. The rice and beans was properly cooked and moist as expected. Added some mojito sauce and it was perfect The only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 was the prices were a little higher or the portions were a little smaller. I always have left overs but not this time and I was still a little hungry so I'm leaning e smaller. Overall though I enjoyed my meal and will be going back. I understand the need for authenticity but after posting my first review they no longer have any English speaking employees. During this time of covid I can't place a phone order because no one understands? Sorry gang you're seriously dropping the ball if no one speaks enough English to understand a customers order. I ordered a boneless fried chicken family meal. They gave me a small circle foil pan of a few pieces of fried bones chicken, the white rice was hard and tasted like I was biting a plastic fork. I order a bake whole chicken meal and was given four chicken leg quarters. The beans had no flavor at all. I ordered from here many times before and the food was just ok. Now it's just terrible, I will never order this food again. You are charging a high price for crappy food. It is no longer the larger tray of chicken when you order the boneless fried chicken, and you will not get a whole baked chicken, just four leg quarters when you order that family meal. These meal use to be able to feed my house hold, now it's not enough and still the same price. You called them and they act like they don't understand and say they will call you back, they never call back and when you call again they don't answer. Never again will I order.
