The office staff called me the day before my first appointment to fill out the paperwork. They did not mention the first time $150 consultation fee until I asked if they really did not take credit/debit cards. When I questioned them, they became defensive and told me it was because Dr. Nelson was a private doctor. I mentioned that I see several private doctors and I had never heard of that. Then the woman I was on the call with put me on hold and had the manager come on the phone to say she is just canceling the appointment. I explained I had never heard of this way of collecting money from patients, even private doctors. She again said she was canceling the appointment. There is a line item on their "office policies" page that states "We reserve the right to refuse service." This was a huge red flag. Doctor Nelson may be a good doctor but if your staff can't answer questions about billing, then perhaps they should receive some training at working at a doctor's office in professional manner. Dr. Nelson is a thorough and experienced heart doctor. He reads your tests results immediately and will call you before your follow up appointment if he has a concern. He explains everything thoroughly and never makes you feel rushed through. He shows genuine concern for your health and will leave no stone un turned to rule out any and all problems. He really is a warrior for you and your health. He conducts most tests right there in his office including the convenience of a blood lab right next door. He is always on time. Dr. Nelson is a nice guy who seems like he knows his stuff. I only saw him for an initial visit, but he was personable and knowledgable. I had no reason not to trust him. Which is why I find it so odd that his office staff is the worst I have ever experienced in my entire life. The customer service is nowhere to be found. There seems to be no training or incentive to offer any true service. These people are clearly trained with a bill collector mentality to be cold, unassuming, and deflective. They will not answer your questions, they will not give you a straight answer, and they will not let you speak to anyone else. I was charged $380 up front for a echocardiogram, and was told it was because it was a new year and a new deductible. I do have a deductible so I took their word for it. When the claim was filed with Anthem, my out of pocket was found to be $15. So I called to inquire about a refund seeing that Anthem had paid the claim. They only accept cash and check, no credit cards. (My personal guess is this makes it harder to fight for your money back. Credit card charges are more easily refuted than cash or check). They also tried to charge me $75 dollars just to call my insurance company for the prior auth they told me I wouldn't get. From what I have read, most contracts between providers and insurance companies forbid this practice of charging unless the provider is out of network. So back to the $365 refund. I call and I was told that I can't speak to the office manager, that the office manager was not involved in the refund process or the billing process, and then later in the same conversation told she would process the refund in a week and write the check. So much for not involved. So, I asked for the name of the office manager and was told I can't have it. That it was private. I asked for a voice mail, phone number, or email so I could follow up and hold them accountable. I wanted to give that information to my insurance company as well, so they could follow. They absolutely refused to give any of this out. Oh and don't try to ask them to file first. They won't see you if you don't pay up front, so they get your money and you have to fight to get it back. So now I feel most of my uneasy suspicion about this place is completely confirmed. Why not give out the office manager's name if you have nothing to hide? How do you let the person that controls your refunds impossible to contact? It is the most shady and unethical thing I have dealt with. I am just hope others take this to their insurance companies and eventually they drop their contracts with them. I have reached out to Anthem to advocate for my refund and to inquire about the odd prior auth charge. Dr. Nelson really does seem like a good doctor, but if he lets his office be managed that way and it really is his shop, then shame on him. If this is the result of bad management and it isn't his call, then that is a bummer because I do think he is a good doctor. No one should go there because they are completely unfriendly, unhelpful, and not trustworthy. Update: I was told that I couldn't come get the check in person because it was their policy to mail it. I got a call back that I can now come get my check in person. So you will have to fight to get them to do the right thing, or save yourself the time and don't go there. In response to your comments "Dr Nelson": I never requested personal info. I simply asked for the name, work voicemail, or a business email to be able to follow up and to provide it to Anthem who had offer to advocate for me based on how this was handled. Simple, professional request and courtesy with most businesses. You say I had an email, but I don't. You don't even have a website. Where is this information? And your office didn't offer to resolve anything quickly until I pressed. I was told it would take months, then "maybe a week," then all of a sudden after contacting my insurance provider, then it was resolved quickly. It was the lack of a clear policy on how this process would be handled that rang another alarm about untrustworthy business practices. And you clearly have policies for how you charge your patients for everything. You see it in multiple copies taped to the check in window. The funny thing is....you and I didn't speak on the matter directly and you were not up front when I picked up the check. Your office manager (who I was told was not in the office that day) was the one up front and continued to be rude and attempted to be intimidating and threatening. In a waiting room full of your patients. At this point, it's not about the policies. It's the insane amount of lying on the phone and now on here. It's shameful. My husband and I have been going to Dr. Nelson for about 20 years. We have received excellent care. Our children also go to Dr. Nelson for a baseline on their hearts. They are adopted without family history. We have sent enumerable friends to Dr. Nelson without complaint. He is honest and caring. He works tirelessly to figure it out and to help you out. I first saw Dr. Nelson when I was 6-7 months pregnant with my second child. Dr Nelson took all measures to make sure that my heart was healthy and that I wasn't having any problems. After having my son in May of 2012 I decided to continue seeing Dr. Nelson on a regular basis for preventative care. My father died from heart disease at 57 (not a patient of Dr Nelsons) and I absolutely do not want that to happen to me. The Dr is okay but the lady manager is horrible. She came in yelling at me because I asked why they were running over an hr late. They kept trying to get me to pay $150. And I kept stating my co pay is $50. She got furious when I said call my Ins company if you want more. If they tell me to pay I will. Of course that didn't happen. I'm surprised that Dr Nelson doesn't say anything to the lady. It seems she's all about giving the clients a hard attack. They should call her the shark Lady. I went here for about six months or so for AFib. Never found my arrhythmia even after 24 hours with a heart monitor attempted that one time. Had me on four different medications that had me feeling horrible including entresto. My ef was slightly low do to rhythm disturbances do to arterial fibrillation. The entire time I knew I was taking way too much medication. Seen him once a month maybe for two months then a period of three months without checking on me while I was on these meds. Cancel my appointments 4 different times. I had a crazy episode one day and called to see if they could just do an EKG so he could catch it for me. They just said sorry if you are worried go to ER. I have and have record of irregular heartbeat but still wouldn't referral me. He is not a surgeon by the way. Sends out to San Francisco for ablation procedure which plenty of cardiologist in Fresno perform the procedure here. He kept telling me that the entresto was the cure med for me even though it made me feel dizzy and scared! He threatened death if I didn't take it so felt I needed it to stay alive. Kept tooting his own horn saying he was one of the last cardiologist that even cares about his patients and said This Is Serious Shit!! Talking about my condition.... Just scared me more..... I truly wonder if the drug company entresto gives him a kick back??!? To make a long story short I got another opinion from another Fresno cardiologist actually an electrophysiologist and he got me off all but two meds carvedilol and eliquis for my AFib he told me I was way over dosed and the lower ef was do to AFib and I needed an ablation took two months to line me up for the procedure and he caught my AFib right away did a stress test viewed my heart and gave me the help I needed. Here I was over drugged and scared and pushed to the back burner felt let down. He argues with alot of negative reviews so don't be surprised... IF YOU HAVE AFIB DON'T TAKE YOUR CHANCES HERE! I felt obliged to write his review after running across the only other review of Dr. Nelson in this website. I have been a Dr. Nelson patient for well over 10 years and very little in the previous review by"Kristen S," rings true with me. I usually arrive about 5-10 minutes before my appointment time and can not remember waiting more than 10-12 minutes (I used to keep track!) and that included a whole lot more appointments than Kristen S experienced! Once inside, I have always been dealt with by friendly and competent staff in a professional manner for whatever the test of the day is (EKG, meds review, etc. That is usually followed by about a 5 minute wait to see the real live Dr. Nelson. Initially, I saw Dr, Nelson for every appointment. When I got to the point where I was doing 3 and then 6 month follow up appointments I was never scheduled to see one of his (also very competent) Physician's Assistants (PAs) without first being asked if I would rather see Dr. Nelson. As far as care, I feel quite comfortable saying that I do not believe there is any better care available outside an inpatient setting in a hospital specializing in cardiology and lipid control. Of course, Dr. Nelsons specialty is lipid control and he is a recognized authority on that subject worldwide. Besides being Board Certified in internal medicine and Cardiovascular Disease, he is also Board Certified in Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and Echocardiography. More to the point (at least for me) he was THE FIRST doctor to be certified as an expert in lipidology by the American Board of Clinical Lipidology! He is also a part-time Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, one of the finest teaching hospitals on the West Coast. He regularly trains other physicians in lipidology and related cardiac issues. I have found the several PAs that have worked with Dr. Nelson to be professional, more than competent and better equipped than most physicians to deal with lipid control issues. I know that Dr. Nelsons reserves a large part of his Friday schedule to review the files of each and every patient seen by a PA during that week. He has called me to ask a question or two as a follow up on occasion. Kristen S's case may be unusual as, apparently, she only saw Dr. Nelson for initial testing. If she needed follow up care in the lipid control area, I feel sure she has not found anyone more effective in that practice than Dr. Nelson. My only issue in well over 10 years of being a patient was an initial issue with an Office Manager who didn't want to be bothered with dealing with my particular insurance and Dr. Nelson cleared that up as soon as I mentioned it to him. The only issue Kristen S brought up that I can agree with is that perhaps Dr. Nelson's office should at least accept credit cards and/or debit cards - even if they have to add a surcharge to cover whatever fees the credit card companies charge him. I can understand not accepting checks. Something that Dr.Nelson doesn't know is that, although I am now retired, I was a law enforcement officer for 36 years and for about the last 13 years of that time I was part of a Federally sponsored drug task force where I specialized in doing criminal cases on various medically related "professionals" - doctors, dentists, chiropractors, PA's, nurses, pharmacists and others. I don't go to doctors without researching their backgrounds and qualifications beforehand. While the internet makes that chore a bit easier, it also makes it easier for someone to make statements that are not factual and allows opinions to be stated in such a way it misrepresents reality to others. Perhaps Kristen S's experience was what really happened to her, but it certainly is not representative of what usually happens in Dr. Nelson's office, based on my many, many personal experiences. read more

As far as a doctor goes, he's alright. Complains alot about the what government is making him do. As far as his business though, I will never go back. I've been there 4 times. My initial appointment, an appointment for an echo and a heart monitor, an appointment to have the monitor removed, and the final appointment to be told the findings. Not once, was I seen anywhere close to my appointment time. We're talking minimum was 45 minutes. This last appointment, it was a full hour and a half AFTER my appointment time before being seen. I always arrive early to appointments. So I was there an extra 15 minutes, but for fairness I will only count from my appointment time. Which in total... was an hour and 28 minutes. Totally unacceptable. What is the point of a scheduling system if you really get seen whenever? Also, they do not take cards. Cash or check. Huge inconvenience in this day and age. So my last appointment, waited an hour and a half to be told I'm fine. Thanks. Next time, take two seconds out of your day to call me and tell me that. It wasn't even the doctor, it was his PA. In conclusion... if I ever need another cardiologist, I will go elsewhere. read more

Dr Nelson has done wonders for my cardiac health. After going to 7 other specialists, my blood chemistries are now in-line for my age and I am very happy with my results. He is understanding and does try different approaches that many Family Practice and Internists do not either understand or trust, like new medications or therapies. His office staff is as efficient as any other specialist office but they keep a tight schedule. Dr Nelson has accommodated me a few times when I was unable to make a scheduled appointment. I would never expect a physician in any field to have a conversation by email or phone call with such an important diagnosis or prognosis. If that is what someone wants then they should sign up for Kaiser where you talk to a computer or have to email your doctor, who knows if it is a ma, nurse or someone that does not know your case is replying to you. In my opinion doing this is not doing justice for anyone putting in the time to be a doctor in the first place. If you want to be treated like cattle go to someone else and roll the dice. I chose Dr Nelson because of his reputation and experience. I have been very happy with him and his staff over the last 6 years and would highly recommend him to anyone wanting straight answers and a caring doctor. One issue I have and this is purely economics on his part, He does not do credit cards or debit cards in his office. It costs him 3% or more plus the cost of the machine, if you are willing to pay a premium for that service then let him know. If not be prepared with cash or check. read more

if there was would be a negative star I would definitely select it. this was the worse experience EVER. So the staff took me in last min. my appt was for 2:45. Didn't leave till 5 when I told them I need to get my kids by 4. The doctor did his notes with his assistant in the room while I was there. He told the front desk to get me in for an echo next day (even if they have to double book). so the appt was made at 5 pm on wed, I called first thing thurs morning to reschedule (even for the same day different time) and they told me that it will be a 55$ cancelation fee. No matter how much I tried telling them that I didn't even have 24 to begin with, they said if I can't follow the office policies I can't be their patient. ok so I made arrangements and kept my 5 pm. About an hour later, they call me and ask if I can come in at 3:30 instead, no I couldn't. So they ask if I can do 3 pm, and no I couldn't. They ask if I can come in before 3 so I can be done in time to get my child from school. I said no lets keep my 5pm, they asked if I can do 4:40, ok that's fine. But look at all the availability they all the sudden have and wanted 55$ earlier on. So I get there at 4:30, realize that I didn't have my checkbook and not enough cash but they don't take cards (how inconvenient). The girl told me I have enough to go to the bank. As I was about to leave, I called my husband to bring the money was he was on his way to get the kids. While I did the call, the girl says that time would I be rescheduling for....???? wait wait what???? I asked her what she means, and she goes "well you said to reschedule?" really when did I say that I was calling my husband. I told her how ridiculous this day has been. I said my appt is at 4:40 and my co pay will be paid before I leave. she said that the co pay is due at the time of service. (which is was going to be) and then told me that the tech has left for the day since I said to reschedule the appt. What kind of service is that? I told them I am NOT going to reschedule as this was the worst doctors office I have EVER EVER been to and am not planning on ever coming back. So you could have a heart attach and dying and the office will cancel your appt on you right on the spot. So now I have no echo, no answers as to what happening to me, 40$ co pay for my first appt, and wasted gas and time for going to an appt that was canceled when I arrived. And yes, the other person that did the review before me is right, the doctor is too opinioned about what the government has done to his practice. read more

Dr. Nelson is by far the most informative doctor I have ever had and I greatly appreciate the time he takes to sit and thoroughly explain things to me instead of just running through the appointment in order to get to the next patient like so many other doctors. The office is in a nice location and the facility is capable of performing a lot of tests instead of me having to go to several locations and waiting for results to be faxed over etc. The staff is very polite as well and the times that I have had to wait, it has never been more than 10 or 15 minutes before I get seen.
