I come to Basingstoke on business regularly and am perpetually amused by the places we find. It seems we drive through the middle of nowhere to find these amazing pubs that serve far better cuisine than any bar food I'm used to back home. In general, my travels have found that the really good places require effort to find in the UK. Coal Grill & Bar was a surprising change from these sometimes scary ventures in which I've gotten lost more than once... This place is either in or near the mall (can't quite recall anymore), so my expectations were low. For any American readers - I was expecting a British version of TGI Fridays or Applebee's so I was just hoping to find something worth eating after a long flight in. To my surprise... it was pretty darn delectable! We ordered the firesticks - I think we tried all flavors except the tiger prawns and were super happy with our choice. You can mix & match to try different flavors, which makes it fun if you're a bit of a foodie. The blue cheese sauce was AWESOME. This was in December so there were plenty of holiday parties going on, the place was busy but maintained quality service and all parties were well taken care of. It seemed to be a great meeting place for many. Thanks to Coal for keeping the fire going for this American traveler!

Not bad overall but inconsistent…read more Went there for a 2 course meal including a steak - pretty good value and nice atmosphere My friend had a fish and chips and the fish (I think haddock) was huge with amazing crispy batter. So 2 weeks later my other friend and I returned for the fish and chips and it was nothing like what we saw 2 weeks earlier, this haddock was tiny and the batter was nothing special. Served with American fries and not proper chips Decent atmosphere - no garbage rap or hip hop shite music playing or too many kids there. Overall relaxing ambiance.

I would like to start on a positive and the only reason it didn't get one star, the staff. Very friendly and welcoming, I couldn't fault them. I decided to treat myself to the 50 day matured rib eye, it's recommended to be cooked medium (I usually prefer rare) but opted for the "chef" recommendation. In the very centre of the steak it was barely medium, it soon went to well done and was like chewing an old boot. Flavour wise it was ok but nothing special, not what you would expect for a steak costing £30! Visually it was appetising which left a bitter taste once I started to consume it. The only way this could be classed as melt in the mouth is if it was served with a chaser of acid. In summary if you want a steak to far surpass, go to Aldi and get one for a tenth of the price!
