Everyone is a friend here, from dancing to karaoke, it was an absolute blast, bar lines weren't insane, and we had the most fun ever.

We had so much fun stopping by on a Thursday evening. We missed some of the line dance lesson (which starts at 7:30) but caught the end. It was packed! I like how the instructor talks about the steps on the mic but there are people positioned throughout the dance floor who know the dance who you can follow. We stopped by with a few of our friends who come more regularly and have mastered some of the dances! Some are more complicated than others but in general these are fairly tricky dances. There's a website you can use to practice the dances at home to prepare for each week. After the lesson there is more open dancing and they play various line dance songs for anyone to join. They also include the song that was covered during the lesson. It's fun to watch - so many folks here are really talented. We only bought some waters and did not try any of the drinks so I can't comment on those. Service was good and the lines at the bar move pretty quickly. We've already been talking about going back here to check out another line dancing class! Would definitely recommend. read more

This is a cute country bar! The dance floor is decorated with very eye catching decor. They play a good mix of music to two step and line dance to. I liked that there were pool tables, darts, and a karaoke room as well. The place does get a little stuffy, so I found myself standing underneath a fan a lot throughout the night. Drinks were also pretty affordable here. A BIG criticism I have about this place though is that they charge for water... who does that?! Their competitor, Whiskey River North, has free water stations located throughout their bar so coming here and finding out I had to pay like $2 for the tiniest cup of water was a bit insulting. Y'all better do something about that. Other than that, I'd like to check out their line dancing Thursdays sometime.... They seem fun. read more

I've been to Neon Boots a few times, only when Mario, Stephanie, and sometimes Lindo are teaching West Coast Swing though. They are fantastic instructors--I've taken classes with Mario and Stephanie elsewhere, and they're both super nice and incredibly talented. While I personally prefer a more structured classroom setting, this is still a solid place to get your dance fix. Neon Boots is a good spot if you enjoy country-western. If you're into West Coast Swing, it depends on the night. It's generally an older crowd unless the west coast dancers are there. Because of the timing for classes, traffic is a nightmare coming from the downtown area. If you are coming from west Houston, it won't be as problematic. Another nightmare -- the drinks. The wine is terrible, the margaritas are worse, and the cranberry vodka tastes cheap --barely tolerable. My official recommendation? The water. Overall, this is a good spot, but be prepared for a couple of older guys leading whip instead of west coast. They can be pretty rough - I hate it, but it's only three minutes of pain and suffering. read more

A few friends and I wanted to learn how to line dance and saw that Neon Boots had a free class on Thursdays so we went out to learn a couple of dances. When deciding to go, we didn't do much research and had no idea it was primarily for the LGBTQ community, but that wouldn't have stopped us anyways. While it's pretty empty at the start of the class... the dance floor is packed by the end of the class. I will note that we have been multiple times and our experience has varied based on the instructor and the dance difficulty. For our first class, we had two great instructors with medium level of difficulty dances and had an incredible time. The patrons visiting are so friendly and everyone helps each other out with the steps as needed which is also nice. Our second visit had a difficult dance and even the instructor seemed to be lost so we didn't really learn much and just ended up chatting most of the time but regardless - it's a fun place to visit. The drinks are reasonably priced and they also have karaoke! Definitely worth a visit! read more

Awesome inexpensive place to dance & karaoke! I came Thursday night when they have line dancing lessons and it's country themed (I think). It was actually pretty crowded and parking was a little challenging. I loved the energy! The lesson was at a good pace for me who is ok at dancing (If you aren't coordinated, the lesson may be too fast paced). After the lessons, they have open line dancing and the regulars know the dance to each song. As a newbie, it was intimidating to see how everyone seemed to know the moves to each song - I'd jump in sometimes and not figure out the steps until the very end of the song. FYI, the music can be loud - if you become a regular, I'd definitely recommend getting earplugs. They have a separate room for public karaoke - luckily, not many people were there when I went so we were able to get in plenty of songs! They have free popcorn, $1 jello shots (I think), complimentary water. I definitely want to come back for the free dancing + karaoke opportunities. Online/social media they seem to post pictures of t crowded on weekends and that it's a great place to go. While drinks are cheap for Houston, when I went, we still paid a 5 dollar cover charge for an almost empty space on a Saturday night. The crowd was also very weird (people sucked each others fingers while dancing) and the dance floor was almost empty the whole time. Super fun dance hall! The history in the place is amazing, firstly. The old Esquire ballroom was a huge deal in the 20th century. All of the big Country Western singers came here, and the huge dance floor is still original. We came on Saturday night, which is country night. My husband and I love to dance so we were stoked to finally find a "honky tonk" to dance at. We were not disappointed. They had a DJ, who played requests and a great mix. This is a great place to dance, even if it's not on a country night... Check their schedule for all the cool stuff that's happening. Also, this is an LGBT+ friendly place. Yeehaw! I finally found a place to fulfill my weekend nightlife. I'm becoming a regular on Friday nights. It is advertised as a Latin Night, but they don't just play Latin songs. My first time here, I stayed from 7 pm to 1 am and witnessed variety of entertainment. Neon Boots Dancehall & Saloon is the most diverse club I could find. Talking about diversity, there are men/women, gay/straight, young/old, multi-ethnicity crowd, interracial couples and music from country to popular genre in English and Spanish. It was fun to watch people moving from Boot Scootin line dance to electric slides to cupid shuffle to cha cha slides like no big deal. The disc jockeys really know how to work the crowd. I don't think you'll see me on the dance floor anytime soon. But I plan to take some line dance lessons before I step my own toes. I spent most of my evening in the Esquire Room, where karaoke took place on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The karaoke jockey is skilled to make you feel welcome. I'm so amazed with his resource because he could find any songs from his online library. If there were no one singing, he'll pick up the mic and entertain everyone in the room. Unlike other karaoke bars, I never felt out of place here as have to worry about competing with highly skilled singers. I select my songs and practice with my baritone voice beforehand. So, I won't make a fool of myself. When I first heard about Neon Boots a couple of years ago, I thought it was just a gay bar far away from the typical Montrose district. I was wrong. There are so many different venues during any operating week: Bingo night, steak night and dance lessons. Occasionally, few non-profit groups use their spaces for fundraising activities. No wonder Neon Boots has been recognized as the biggest and best dance club by many local publications. If I had an out-of-town guest, I'll include Neon Boots Dancehall as the final destination. There are more culture experiences to share under one roof as nowhere else on Earth. The place just did some renovations to their back patio area and it looks amazing, so nice. They also have a karaoke section. If that's your thing you enjoy. We took a friend there for her birthday on a Sunday and it wasn't too crowded again probably cause it was a Sunday, but she loves karaoke, so we enjoyed that for a little bit. Every time I have gone to this bar, the male bartenders are freaking rude. It is NORMAL to be hollered at and interrupted by them. They're angry older gay men and really should just retire already. I have seen them do it to many of the female patrons. The Dj...what a joke! For a country music bar, they play a lot of Spanish and pop music. Many times, clearing the floor. I brought my tip money up to the booth and requested a song (not one person was dancing) and the dj told me that it was going to kill his vibe. You don't tell a customer that and I asked him what vibe...no one was dancing. He played my country dance song and couples spilled onto the the dance floor. I think the dance hall is a great idea but the owners really need to clear out the angry old men and hire a more professional group of people. Gentlemen, we are on the same side, be nice! Mr. Dj, chill out on the Spanish music...one or two songs an hour should be enough. As soon as another Spanish song comes on, the dance floor clears and you're customers are bitching about you. Went here for a comedy show (which was super fun) with a group of friends. When the Lyft driver first pulled up we were "uh oh, what is this place". On the outside it looks like maybe it used to a church? Or a strip club? It looks pretty sketchy from the street. However, once you walk in, it is huge and beautiful and super clean! The female bartender was hella slow, but the drinks were tasty! The outdoor area was quite spacious and also very clean with live plants and all kinds of seating arrangements! The crowd was a little older; I didn't really see many young folks there, but the people were very nice and genuine without all the fakeness and drama that comes from the young ones! We will definitely be going back when another fun event happens here (there are signs everywhere for Halloween and other upcoming events) and I heard they do good drag shows for charity. read more

The owners put a lot of heart and soul into this place and it shows. They have a beautiful large patio, free dance lessons, game nights, karaoke nights, they host shows for different community organizations, as well as concerts by country artists like Ty Herndon. I visited your bar, tonight December 30th. For the first time since Covid with 7 friends to celebrate our friends 31 st Anniversary! We arrived there about 10 ish and went to the bar where 2 female bartenders were tending . There were 2 patrons at the bar. We were never welcomed and never acknowledged. We stood there waiting for one of the 2 bartenders to ask what we would like and they totally ignored us, like they were too busy to take an order. You would think after Covid you would want the business, but not these two women! So we left!! And took our business to another gay club! These two were at the front bar, where they were the only ones! I have been to your bar a number of times and never treated so rudely! My friends and I won't be back anytime soon! Maybe you should train these two bartenders on how customer service works! I will be spreading this treatment to many of my friends! There are other gay clubs to go to that know how to treat their customers! They should be ashamed !!! read more

If you are a member of the gay community on Houston, this should be on your radar. Not just as a place to go get your two steppin' and drink on. This is a great place for so many benefits and fund raisers for our community charities and organizations. I am not a go out and close the bar down gal anymore. But I do enjoy a good game of darts, pool or bingo! So I am not reviewing the place as a night club. I am a happy hour or special event bar goer these days and this is a nice place to do that. But if you check their website or Facebook page you are going to see a LOT of events that benefit local gay charities, steak night, dance lessons and special Saturday's for us middle aged ladies who remember The Ranch.
