The museum is full of historic information and articles to view. One of the coolest part of the experience is being able to board the USS Wisconsin, even for someone like me, a wheelchair user. I was able to tour the deck and check out many areas of the ship. The docents and museum personnel were friendly and knowledgeable when anyone had a question or wanted to know more of the history of "Old Whisky" I am a naval history buff and the chance to be able to get on a ship that helped the US in WWII, it was a treat. Whether you are visiting Norfolk for a long or short visit, put this historic Navy battleship!

The tour bus pulled up and the guide greeted everyone on board and let us know where we would be going and what we would be seeing. He also had handouts which identified the areas we would be seeing. During the tour the guide went into specifics of when significant events happened during the historical time periods. The tour was comfortable and had background music playing to accompany the guide. There were plenty of opportunities to stop for restroom breaks and we were also asked if anyone needed to stop. Overall the tour went by very quickly, did not seem like 3 hours had past. I would recommend this tour, should also mention that the guide was pointing out museums and restaurants to visit.

The only screw-pile lighthouse still standing in North Carolina is the Roanoke River Lighthouse…read morenear Edenton, a unique and durable piece of maritime history. It was constructed in 1886 and lit in 1887 with the intention of directing ships into the Roanoke River from the Albemarle Sound. An inventive answer to the delicate, changing soils of coastal rivers was its distinctive screw-pile foundation, which consisted of steel pilings that were physically screwed into the riverbed. In contrast to the majority of lighthouses of its type, this one was two floors tall and had a lantern tower with a fourth-order Fresnel lens positioned on a corner of the roof instead of in the middle. The Coast Guard sold the lighthouse to Elijah Tate in 1955 after it was discontinued in 1941 because of dwindling river traffic. The building was severely damaged by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, which led to a preservation effort. With the help of the public and private sectors, the Edenton Historical Commission bought it in 2007, relocated it to Colonial Waterfront Park, and repaired it. It now proudly sits on Edenton's port as a museum and a testament to the tenacity of the local community and historical preservation. The lighthouse is free to tour and the "grounds" are accessible 24 hours. It is well worth a stop. Our enthusiastic and entertaining guide was the former police chief of this small town. Starting in front of a coffee shop that was once a bank we strolled around learning about past events and buildings in Manteo. A lot of firsts happened there which I was not aware of. The tour lasted around 2 hours and since he tours with smaller groups we had no issue hearing what was said. Our younger sons enjoyed the tour as well. Fun fact- The guide's daughter has a very popular true crime podcast!

We really enjoyed the ride and all the history they shared with us along the way. It was a hot day but the temperature inside the trolley was comfortable. Barbara's extensive knowledge of the area and Clayton's visible enthusiasm for the tour really exemplifies the magnificent people of downtown Edenton and the sense of community that's obvious as soon as you get out of your car to explore. The ride might not be the best choice if you have small children with you as they would likely find it boring. Buy tickets for the trolley at the Penelope Barker house right across the street from where the trolley is parked. Don't miss this!
