Dr. Yousefi is an awesome, energetic, informative doctor. She is a breath of fresh air. She is the second orthopedic doctor I went to about my knee and I am so thankful I decided to try someone else. I work for Medstar and my co-worker had told me how amazing she was. I am a 50 year old above knee amputee. I have been an amputee for 30 years. I had no cartlidge in my knee. I had been constantly on a crutch for 3-4 years . I do not feel I will ever be a candidate for a knee replacement due to being an above knee amputee. When I went to doctor Yousefi, I had already had an xray and an MRI. She explained what the issue was and showed me in her office with an ultrasound. She took her time and made sure I understood. She then gave me 3 options. I don't remember the medical terms, but the first option was to stick a needle in the knee in various places to get the knee to start producing more synovial fluid which your body makes less of as you age. The second option was gel injections that sometimes work and sometimes doesn't. The third option was a procedure called Lipogems that insurance would not cover because they considered it experimental. It was $3500 out of pocket. Lipogems is technology that gently processes your body's own fat tissue in order to, amongst other things, cushion and support areas of injury or damage as your body heals itself. It promotes healing and regeneration. They take fat from your stomach and the fat is processed and injected into your knee. I told Dr. Yousefi I could use my tax return money to pay for the procedure and she suggested to try the needle process first. She said she did not want me to have to pay for the procedure if we could get the knee to function properly without it. I was impressed by this. She did not try to push the procedure at all. We tried the needles and we did see improvement but it was very minimal. She asked if I wanted to try the injections and I told her no, I wanted to do the Lipogems procedure. The procedure was done at the Nerve, Bone and Joint Institute in Washington DC. It was immaculately clean and new looking. I tolerated the procedure well. My fiancé got me through the retraction of the fat part which I felt was a little grueling but well worth it. The injecting into the knee I thought was easier. Dr. Yousefi said most patients typically had a harder time with the injecting process. We were there approximately 2 -3 hours. I had it done on a Thursday and I was able to go back to work on Monday. Immediately, my swelling that was constant up to this point, went down and I could see my knee cap again which I had not been able to see for a couple years. I was able to walk a little better and did not ache as much. The knee also stopped "catching" as often. That took longer. After a few months Dr. Yousefi showed me in the ultrasound where the inflammation went down significantly and we could see cartllidge where there previously was less to none. It has been several months now. I no longer walk with a crutch. I continue to regenerate up to a year after the procedure. I love the way Dr. Yousefi communicates. You can see in her face and eyes that you are all that is on her mind while you're in her office. She remembers what we talk about when I return. She makes a point to know me. She welcomes questions where some physicians make you feel you are bothering them. I never had any doubts with Dr. Yousefi where I have had them with other physicians. I am very glad she is young for selfish reasons. I don't want her to retire any time soon. I hope she will be my physician for many years to come. read more

Dr. Hashemi has treated my peripheral nerve injuries following my motor vehicle accident in 2013. He is always caring, compassionate and knowledgeable. He is respectful and spends much time evaluating and explaining everything we discuss. His team is attentive and considerate. I have had multiple surgical and non surgical interventions by other doctors as well as Dr Hashemi. I think Dr Hashemi has been the most thorough and knowledgeable. He brings research and experience to each discussion and interaction. In my opinion, he is one of the best hand and nerve surgeons I have ever encountered. If I was on my death bed I would not go here. Worst experience of my life. The office was always empty you could hear a pin drop and I would wait no less than an hour before he came to the room. You could hear him walking down the halls and then it was silent. Few months go buy then there loud music playing. Assuming someone complained about the wait in silence. My mother n law came with me and she was annoyed by this as well. Then he failed to add a drain after surgery leading to another surgery a week later to then drain the fluid and put a drain. Pushing me out of work for 8 not 4 weeks as promised. Always spoke quietly using medical terminology. I was paying out of pocket 415 for 15 minutes only to discover he was still billing my insurance. Can we say fraud!!! He harassed me repeatedly for days, personally sending me threatening emails over $300 when I caught on to his scam. And just to think I almost let him convince me that i needed another surgery. I've found a new Dr who says the surgery he wanted to do on me was unnecessary and not even my issue. . Save yourself. I wish I would have read the reviews before I went. And he was as referred to me by my spinal surgeon whom I adore. I told him not to send anyone else to this guy. Hopefully he didn't. All of the staff in Holy Cross Hospital was great - they were helpful, and patient. Dr. Shar is incredible. This doctor and all of his staff WILL NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. Horrible experience with their billing department. I had 2 office visits in 2022 with the doctor (who by the way will keep you waiting for more than one hour from your appointment time before seeing you). The visits were OON, so I'm responsible for the balance, which I understand and accept. What is completely unacceptable is that I never received an invoice for the amount I owed. After almost TWO years, out of nowhere, the office starts calling and emailing incessantly demanding the balance be paid,. They never asked what my current financial situation is so we could work out a payment plan (because obviously they don't care). The billing department obviously had not been doing their job and now they have to cover their ass, so the chosen method is constant harassment from their office. They treated me like some sort of delinquent who has not intention of paying, which assuredly is not the case. I used to manage a medical practice, and our policy was always Patients first. I was rushed to the ER at Holy Cross Hospital on February 2, 2018, after a freak accident where I smashed my hand into a brick wall, crushing bones in the pinky finger on my left hand. My finger was literally hanging off my hand, which freaked me (and everyone who saw it) out to the point that I had to hide it from myself! I am a classical musician: a choir director and pianist. My injury was severe and compromised the blood flow into my pinky finger. I was in danger of losing that finger. This would be a nightmare for anyone, but for someone in my profession, there is an added dimension. Dr. Hashemi was the surgeon on call and came in immediately to do the surgery - which not every hand surgeon would do, I have since found out from friends who are also medical professionals. Dr. Hashemi was polite, clear, professional and rather brilliant! I could see that he was anxious to operate in order to achieve the absolute best outcome possible. He earned my trust immediately by treating me with respect and professionalism, as well as true concern. He was everything I could have hoped for in a doctor - especially in this situation! Dr. Hashemi is clearly dedicated to his work and his patients. He is skillful to the point of elevating surgery to a high art. He outlined three different approaches that he might have to take during surgery - assuring me that he would begin with the least invasive. He took time to answer my questions and make sure that I understood his approach. I trusted him completely and I was NOT disappointed. How he put my finger back together without making a direct incision, I'll never fully understand. After the surgery, Dr. Hashemi told me that on his first attempt to reconstruct my pinky, the blood flow into the finger was not good - so he inserted pins to hold the tiny bones in place. As of this date, my pinky is PINK instead of black and blue, It really looked frightening. This was three weeks ago and my finger is healing incredibly well. I'm so grateful that he came in to do the surgery. I thought I would have to settle for a nightmarish doctor because of the emergency nature of my situation. I had peripheral nerve surgery done by Dr. Hashemi. I have seen over 20 physicians for the nerve pain. I recieved meds and blocks by several other physicians, none of the meds helped and the blocks were short lived. Dr. Hashemi explained the surgery to me and my husband in a manner that we understood exactly what he was doing and what needed to be done after surgery in order for it to be successful. Dr. Hashemi's office also helped me with coccyx pain from a snowboard fall. I have seen this office 3 times and got more material relief and correct diagnosis with them than with any other physicians. A nightmare. Doctor Hashemi loves to tell you how good he is. Unfortunately he's a terrible listener, and diagnoses you with 206 diseases that need 2,300 tests. He'll make you wait for hours and hours at your appointment, so take the day off of work. Then he'll want you to make two appointments with his physical therapist and one with his wife. Why? Because he can. I'll give the dude credit - he knows how to make himself and friends a lot of money. Problem is he doesn't solve your issue, so the money goes from your pocket to his. Hardy and Pain In February 2005, I fell on the ice. The entire weight of my body came down on my right leg and had a tib/fib fracture. In the ambulance, I pleaded with the driver not to take me to the hospital closest to me but they could not. I had surgery to fix the broken bones and was placed in a cast from my toes to the middle of my thigh. After a few days was sent home with a home nurse coming every day for about a week. The first day home I was having pain in my thigh from a cast that was far too tight. During the entire time I was in the cast I complained of pain beyond what I expected from the admittedly serious break but I was ignored. When the cast came off many months later, the pain I felt on my tight, leg, and foot, not only did not get better but the pain continued to increase. The orthopedic surgeon sent me to a pain doctor and I had my first three spinal injections. I gave up on these two doctors and got a referral to a Physiatrist, who with the EMG results from a neurologist and a consolation with another pain doctor concluded I had Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome Type 2 (CRPS2). At the start, my physiatrist gave me a list of protocols that he would follow to treat my pain. I began with neuropathic drugs, then opiates, PT, dozens and dozens of spinal injections, TENS units, a spinal cord stimulator trial, and on and on. Nothing seemed to help and my pain continued to increase. I was given ever increasing doses of opiates until I was on a dose of opiates high enough to kill a junkie. I saw another pain doctor and under went even more spinal injections while I was switched to a more powerful long-acting opiate along with the Oxycodone I was taking for breakthrough pain. I saw yet another pain management doctor and had more spinal injections. Nothing helped. Eventually, my Physiatrist said to me, "I have tired everything that western medicine can do for you; maybe it is time you talked with this non-pharmacological therapist." I began seeing this therapist who got me meditating. Meditation over the years has brought me to a transformation in how I perceived my chronic pain. Another life-changing breakthrough came in December of 2010. By this time, I was virtually confined to a chair with the opiates not seeming to help with the pain enough for me to want to remain in this intellectually clouded state. I had gotten a new physiatrist who was young and who tired techniques for addressing my chronic at the level of the damaged nerves. He referred me to Dr. Hashemi for consultation about the possibility of peripheral nerve surgery, So I decided to detox from opiates in anticipation of this peripheral nerve surgery. The next step in my directly addressing the cause of my pain and not the symptoms of it was the first peripheral nerve surgery Dr Hashemi performed in May 2011. This surgery involved removing damaged tissue at several parts of my leg and foot and reducing the pressure on the peripheral nerves in my leg. Dr Hashemi is a very careful surgeon. He does not perform a procedure until he is sure that it is necessary because the preceding ones have not solved all of the issues. These surgeries gave me great relief. The swelling and redness that had been ever present for almost seven years subsided. The severe allodynia on the right side of the top of my foot improved markedly. I had not been able to wear of shoe on this foot for most of these seven seven years. I could not even sleep with a sheet touching the top of my foot. I no longer require a cane to walk. I can wear shoes. My posture is improved since I am no longer have contracted my body in pain but have learned to relax. I now get out of my house where I had exiled myself since I had such limited mobility. And I am considerably and noticeably happier and a more pleasant person to be around. As my daughters said, "Welcome back Dad." Dr Hashemi gave me back my life. He is also a remarkable hand surgeon, who has operated on both my arms and hands for my having numbness in my fingers and compression of my ulnar and median nerves. I have known and worked with Dr Hashemi for nearly seven years, and I can attest that he is both a caring and accomplished peripheral nerve and hand surgeon. My son had broken his arm and had damage to the radial nerve in his left arm which left him very little mobility in his left hand. After seeing several doctors, we were referred to Dr. Hashemi in DC. He was great with my son from the very beginning, and took a very positive approach to a very scary injury. Ultimately, Dr. Hashemi performed a nerve graft to repair the damage in a 7 hour procedure. The outcome has really been amazing, the surgery was over a year ago now, and he has started piano lessons, and barely notices any deficiency with his left arm. Dr. Hashemi and his team at NBJI have a very attractive facility that is brand new. The staff that support the doctors are very helpful and professional. Unfortunately, Dr. Hashemi is not a very good doctor. Beware, he is very convincing, but this guy will try to get you to undergo procedures that are both risky and completely unnecessary. I had repetitive stress injuries from typing and saw him for several months. He was so convinced in his approach that he got me to do an unnecessary diagnostic procedure that put me under. It was unnecessary according to the leading hand surgeon expert at John's Hopkins Hospital. Based on the results of this surgery, which was supposed to test something in my arms and was chalk full of errors and bad readings, he recommended I proceed with a very invasive surgery that would have put me out of work for an entire month and PT for several months to follow. Despite my pointing out to the doctor that his diagnosis did not explain some of the other significant symptoms I was having, he was confident in his plan of action. I am sure that this doctor is good at treating certain health problems, but his narrow focus blinded him from realizing that my symptoms did not fit his diagnosis. He has a vested financial interest in the surgery center where he conducts his procedures and referred me to his wife for both diagnosis and treatment. His billing department had serious difficulty in explaining to me how much I was going to have to pay for my procedures with this doctor, and they had several billing mistakes. Dr. Shar Hashemi, of the Nerve Bone and Joint Institute, was recommended in August 2013 - I had significant damage to my right peroneal nerve. After my first appointment I was excited and relieved to have finally found a doctor who could help me. Dr. Hashemi really seemed to care and had a great bedside manner. I was scheduled for surgery in the next month. The surgery center that was recommended and preferred was a surgi-center in Maryland that Dr. Hashemi is a part owner in. This didn't trouble me - I just was focused on healing. It wasn't until I was recovering from surgery that some red flags appeared. I got an infection in two of the three surgery sites. When I was able to drive for an office visit with Dr. Hashemi, I was told I had a balance on my account. In the past, doctors who perform surgeries had the follow-up charges as part of the surgery fee. I owed money for co-pays that Dr. Hashemi was charging. When I complained at the front desk I was told the new charges weren't considered surgery follow-up since I was being treated for "new" issues. I had an infection from surgery the doctor just performed... In January 2014 I began to experience pain again in my right leg - bad enough to limit me in my activities and my ability to stand and walk. I saw Dr. Hashemi and he recommended I see another doctor in his practice, Dr. Morvarid Yousefi - who happens to be his wife. Although I started seeing some red flags, which I continued to justify, I saw Dr. Yousefi - she was fine - but seemed to rely on her husband's, aka Dr. Hashemi, lead. Everything was followed up with: we'll see what Dr. Hashemi thinks. If it's all above board - why appear to keep it secret your married? Sometime at the end of 2015 I recommended to a co-worker of my husband - who had a leg problem - to see Dr. Hashemi. The first week of February 2014 or so - my husband followed up with this co-worker only to be told that they didn't see Dr. Hashemi because he stopped taking the insurance we all had coverage under. This was news to us. I called the office ASAP and yes - it was true my insurance was no longer accepted and if I wanted to keep my follow-up appointments I would have to pay out of pocket. I couldn't afford that choice and stopped seeing Dr. Hashemi. Thanks for the notice.I never heard anything from the office or Dr. Hashemi. Fast forward to October 2015 - living with my inability to stand or walk for long periods of time and severe pain - I emailed Dr. Hashemi for a referral to see a doctor at Johns Hopkins. The response was undecipherable. Later I was informed I had to make an appointment and be seen by Dr. Hashemi for him to consider a referral. After some complaining on my part and calls to try and get a copy of my medical record, I received an email from the Nerve Bone and Joint Institute's attorney, who is on staff, that all communications were to go through him from now on. On December 11, 2015 I was sent a password protected letter via email that Dr. Hashemi would no longer be my treating physician. It stated that a good relationship between doctor and patient was essential for safe and quality medical care and we longer had that. The letter even stated that : "The reason for this decision is inability to follow my peripheral nerve surgical recommendations...I advised you to follow up...You have not scheduled a follow up." I am disappointed that after trying to get a simple referral too another doctor the situation ended in a giant mess that caused me stress and many hours of frustration. And Dr. Hashemi never writing that referral for me to get help, relive pain and get a new treating physician. In my opinion, Dr. Hashemi and the Nerve Bone and Joint Institute staff don't care about patients well-being - the care is focused on a "cover our asses" attitude and concept - which is all about making money. read more

Do NOT go here. I saw this doctor as an in-network patient and was taken out of network for a non-emergency non-life threatening surgery (one I'm not certain was necessary!) The surgery was performed at a hospital the doctor picked and one the office stated I was covered for; only to find out after the surgery that I was covered at that hospital but the doctor performing the surgery there was not. Therefore NBJI could foot me an enormous out of pocket bill. I saw them as an in-network provider. This is unethical. I learned after the fact that there were hospital options the doctor could have arranged which were in network and for which my surgery would have been covered. This office knew they were taking me out of network and told me otherwise. The billing department is a shady mess. First, I never received a bill in the mail. They called me to tell me I owed them a ridiculous amount, and later emailed me a bill. I've never experienced such disorganization. While I made good faith efforts to resolve my enormous bill with their office the billing department did not follow-up- even after I went into the office to find a resolve and sent certified mail as they requested. Without notice they sent my bill to collections. When I addressed this with the office the billing department told me I would have received a 90 notice before going to collections. This did NOT happen. One portion of the bill that was sent to collections was for over $1K for an in-office visit which the billing office later admitted was a mistake. A rather large expensive mistake to bill a patient. While I had engaged my insurance way before I was sent to collections when insurance called their billing department they said that myself and the office had come to an agreement, which was false. Only after seeking legal counsel and getting a supervisor from my insurance to communicate directly with their billing department did a resolve unfold. A resolve which involved my paying to be removed from collections which should have NEVER happened and for which their office took no responsibility. The office even casually informed me they sometimes grossly over charge for surgery to make up for the high rent costs to their office space in DC. This place is a complete nightmare. DO NOT SEEK SERVICES HERE. This business is shady and scheming. read more

My daughter was referred to dr Hashemi after 2 cervical fusions in the past year for horrible headaches and muscle spasms in neck and back. I cannot say enough wonderful things about dr hashemi and his entire staff. Within a week of the referral he performed occipital neurectomy surgery and my daughter was headache free for the first time in years. The following week performed brachial plexus decompression and the muscle spasms are 75 percent better within a week post op. He has truly given my daughter her life back!!! Not only is he a truly amazing surgeon, he is a caring compassionate person that went above and beyond to provide exceptional care. Should you have the misfortune to damage your hand - and you are then fortunate enough to be directed to Dr. Shar Hashemi - you will have an excellent surgeon and doctor for your recovery. After an amputation of the tip of a finger - Dr. Hashemi was able to creatively repair the injury. He stood by the patient throughout the recovery and therapy process. The results are positively remarkable with nearly full use and appearance regained. Be prepared for long waits for appointments because Dr. Hashemi does take emergency cases which we appreciated - and he spent a lot of time with us during each appointment explaining and answering all we needed to know. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Dr. Hashemi is a snake-oil salesman. He asks for all these tests that are done by his buddies, wants you to see his wife for more tests, is arrogant, doesn't answer questions but makes you feel like you're about to die. You get to the office and wait 2 or 3 hours for him to come in. He kept saying "Oh, we're getting more staff - don't worry, the wait times will get less in a few months". That was 2015. I saw him just over a year, and the wait times got ... longer. I bought into his methods for a while; thankfully, I didn't let him operate on me! Read through here or Facebook - there are horror stories! He has a good method of making you feel like crap, telling you "we really want to avoid surgery" but making sure you realize that you're severely screwed up and need to see him and all his friends for a million tests. A never-ending round of tests. He loves to tell you how great he is and how accomplished he is, but you leave the office feeling like absolute crap. I found Dr. Hashemi through a referral in regards to nerve pain in my pelvis, coccyx, legs and feet. After two years of pain, and countless rounds of doctors in Denver, medications that did not work, massage, a year of physical therapy - I finally found relief with Dr. Hashemi and Dr. Yousefi. I highly recommend their office as they listen to the patient's pain complaints, diagnose and treat accordingly. I don't like to waste my time, and feel Dr. Hashemi values his patient's time in finding the root cause of the pain and treat it as quickly as possible. Dr. Hashemi and his team are a great group of professionals. My two-year-old son partially amputated his finger over Easter weekend and Dr. Hashemi made a traumatic time in our life less chaotic. I was an emotional wreck and sleep deprived before my son went in for emergency surgery so Dr. Hashemi took the time to come to our hospital room and spend about 20 minutes explaining not only the procedure, but to make sure we completely understood the procedure and his background and answered every question we had. He is a great surgeon with a calming and friendly bedside manner. He went out of his way for me and my son. My son's finger is completely healed and looks perfect. I cut the tendons and nerve to my left pinky finger in a freak fall. I drove to a local hospital where after a wait two physicians assistants stitched the wound up. But they told me the hand surgeon on call recommended that I have surgery that night. That turned out to be Dr. Hashemi. We couldn't get an operating room until after midnight and I was worried that he might be fatigued. But my fears were immediately allayed when I met Dr. Hashemi. I was recommended Dr. Hashemi by my doctor after I cut my finger that resulted in a severed tendon and minor mallet finger that needed surgery. I am so happy that was sent here! Dr.Hashemi is probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. Pros: -Him and his office worked with me to get my insurance to cover my procedure better -He was able to get me into surgery the same day as I met with him after his clinic hours (I had met with others for opinions, they all same thing but Dr.Hashemi seemed to be the best) -Pre-surgery he did a great job explaining the surgery to me without making me feel confused or stupid -He personally emailed me back after I emailed about a consultation. After the surgery he has contacted me many times making sure I'm recovering pain free and healthily. He phone was present during visits but he didn't seem distracted by it, I can let that go if it means I get the great patient care I have received. -Like I said he is one of the nicest people, as is the lovely receptionist. During out first post surgery meeting I got light headed and almost past out on him. He was patient, attentive, and did everything he could to make me feel better. Afterwards he made sure I was hydrated and feeling well before leaving the office. He also had me email him with how much water/gatorade I was drinking to make sure I stayed hydrated. -Dr.Hashemi was very honest about the procedure and how I will scar, but its my finger and I don't really care. I do appreciate him preparing me. -I have had a great recovery very little pain and healing wonderfully. Which is really the whole point. I have very sensitive skin and was getting a rash from the wrapping they put on me. I emailed him about it early the next day after surgery and he was more than happy for me to come in ASAP to re-wrap it with something else. Afterwords he was very careful with what he used to cover my stitches and always checked on me later to make sure I wasn't having another reaction. -Every other patient in his office seemed to be having the same great service I was Cons: -His office is very new and modern, but sometimes they have you wait in this glass walled waiting room and I found that very awkward. I felt like I was in a fishbowl, but I didn't have to worry about them forgetting about me. The regular exam rooms are fine though, a little boring but its a doctors office. -I live in Alexandria and his office is kinda far away from me. I don't like driving into DC and couldn't with the pain medication so I had to take the metro. He is very close to the Foggy Bottom stop (like a five minute walk tops) so it wasn't horrible. -If this wasn't the third time I heard I definitely needed surgery, I would have felt a little rushed. My injury does need pretty immediate care so I understand the urgency. So if you don't know if you need surgery maybe get another opinion first. read more
