Terrible customer service experience! I was wandering around looking for someone to ask a few simple questions to and had to wait soooo long just to talk to someone. The first employee couldn't help me and sent me to the customer service/lumber ordering desk so they could look up what's on sale online. It's crazy that they don't know what's on sale in the store and you have to point out the sale items online or bring in a flyer to show them. It's 2020! Never seen a retail store that doesn't know what's on sale in their own store. So I get to the help desk and the employee there tells me he can't look up the sale deals because he says he doesn't have internet there (which is a total lie). He flat out refuses to help me and then tells me to wander to the far side of the store where maybe someone can find out (Huh?!?! So the help desk can't help me?). So I go to the cashier and ask her if my item is still on sale and she sends me back to the customer service desk where they DO have internet. Now the FOURTH employee I deal with finally looks up my item online to make sure it's on sale. So the first help desk guy simply refused to look up my item online and lied to me and said he doesn't have internet. This is the worst customer service experience I've had in a very long time. I don't understand why this man was so rude and refused to help me. Isn't that his job? At the time, I felt like maybe he saw that I'm a young woman in a hardware store and didn't feel like helping me because I'm not a professional contractor, and thought he could get away with treating me like that. Or maybe he was having a bad day. But reading other reviews, this type of behaviour and sour attitude seems par for the course. If you come here, you need to look up what's on sale beforehand, so you can tell this store the prices of their own items. And don't talk to anyone unless you absolutely need to. read more

This store caters to builders and renovators - professionals, not Individuals who don't know a hammer from a mallet like me. That said, if you wait your turn, they are super helpful and very kind. If you see a deal in the Home Hardware flyer, don't bother trying to get that sale item at New Canadian Lumber because they don't sell the same stuff and not at the advertised prices if you do see the item. Home Hardware is NOT a standard branded chain store - they are a group of ma & pa stores which pay to belong to the Home Hardware name but that's about it. Each store is run the way that particular store owner wants to operate. They don't have to carry standard inventory, nor participate in advertised sales and will charge whatever they want. All of the negative stories for New Canadian Lumber in Yelp since 2010 still ring true in 2021. Save yourself some grief and go to stockyards Home Depot or Canadian tire. read more

The guy working the lumber desk is a complete a-hole. He should not be customer facing.

They're not selling windows, they're just taking money and delaying. We ordered windows from New Canadians in late July, and were told they would be ready in 2-3 weeks. That timeline worked for us as we were aiming to install them in time to and rent the space by September 1st. We were explicit about the timeline and potential loss of rent at the time we ordered. We paid half of the total as an advanced deposit. After 2 weeks we checked in and were told that they would be ready in another 2-3weeks. We expressed concern and explained that each day after September 1st would cost us money. They said it was a COVID related delay. After Sept 1 passed we called and were told that they could confirm that the windows would be done, not in another two weeks, but by the 18th. We stressed again that every single day after Sept 1 is costing us, making the windows far more expensive for us than what we were paying for the windows themselves. At this point, we're 7.5 weeks out from the initial order date and looking at another month of lost rent for October. We call today, the day that we received explicit confirmation that the windows would be done ... And you guessed it. They assured us that they would be done in 2-3 weeks. So we're thousands of dollars down the drain in lost rent and it turns out that they haven't even started to manufacture them. They kept blaming COVID but we were all well aware of COVID by late July. Manufacturers should know how to adjust their estimates by now. If we're more than a month and a half out from the order date and they haven't started to make the windows I can only assume that they're not making windows at this time. They fought us on getting a refund and didn't even offer so much as a gift certificate or store credit to make up for the losses we've incurred. Which is sad, because we've always liked them for having quality products and informed staff that seem to care about their work. It's why we went to them in the first place. We thought we could trust them. DO NOT ORDER WINDOWS FROM NEW CANADIANS. They may still be selling them, but they aren't making them. read more

Great place to go if you want to be treated like shit by every employee you interact with. From the guys at the lumber ordering counter, to the cashiers, to the guys in the lumber yard, it's nothing but bitterness and anger. Occasionally they have an item I can't find elsewhere. That's almost always online, for pickup, because there is not much in the store. However, even buying a simple item in the store, like a bag of sand, required dealing with 3 employees, paper work, and car pickup "at the back". I got unclear instructions from a particularly rude "backyard" employee. It's hard to think of a good reason to go there, unless you live or work close by. read more

Wow. Looks like there's a consensus that this place makes you feel dumb. With it being a building supply store I guess the people who work here don't give a shit about you unless you're buying $500 worth of 2x4s or some expensive tools. I live a few feet away from this place so when I need simple things like light bulbs or a screwdriver then I hit this place up, and will continue to come here for such items, but they always make me feel like a total moron. I don't even bother asking them for anything because I don't feel like being talked down to. I once even went here to get some keys cut and it was like I was completely wasting everyone's time. Also, the girls who work the counter are usually in the most foul mood. Snapping their gum and wishing they were sitting at home watching MuchMusic or texting their friends. I would not recommend this company . After waiting for a few days a gentleman showed up charged me. $316.00 for camera and give me a quote for repairing estimating it by looking at sky , and estimate was $4500 and if you order right now we deduct the camera fee , if you call us later you might not get the camera fees deducted. Having used New Canadians for umpteen items over the last so many years and being familiar with all conditions affecting the customer experience, I can say that I appreciate the courtesy and professionalism of the staff whenever I buy things here. The staff use a no-nonsense approach that is so much better than a chummy or smarmy sales approach. Great place to shop within the city... They have great selection of bathroom, kitchen and light fixtures and their sale prices are awesome... Last pieces are usually 50% off which is less than what they pay for them... I keep going by there when we are doing jobs around town to compare prices and sometimes stock up on items at a good price... They also have a whole tile showroom for anyone looking to renovate their washroom or kitchen... A great place to add to your list of shops when doing any renovations... read more

Terrible customer service in general - there are a few nice employees, but they are few and far between. At first I thought that they were just unpleasant to weekend DIYers, but after conversations with many contractors it seems that the dour attitude isn't discriminatory. I'd rather make a trek to the Junction were the employees at both the Rona and the Home Depot are much more helpful. Oh, and never order tile or lumber there, you'll be waiting in line first at a "help" desk then at the cashier and then you'll have to wait for someone to bring your order to a loading dock - what a mess! read more

Our convenient go to hardware store however, the first time I visited I was taken back at what appeared as rudeness and being ignored. I have since come to understand their system and knowing how it works now understand how to navigate the small "Porteguese village" mentality. If you overlook the indifference of the staff and their attempt to ignore you, and understand that you take a number and wait your turn you will receive excellent service! They will walk you to the exact spot and show you where the item is even give you some advice. Just be patient. Buying lumber? Take your number Be served at the counter where your order is printed up. Next you line up and pay at the cash. Next, you get into your car and drive around the back where the service is efficient & they will load your vehicle for you and on the way out you will turn in your paperwork. They have good internal systems in place that provide service to the customer while keeping control of inventory and pilferage. Patience is the optimum word when visiting this business. The prices are competitive with the large chains & the inventory adequate. I now like shopping here! read more

The service here has always been pretty bad, but today was the first time I was actually humiliated by the staff. Earlier in the day, I called to ask if they sold plexiglas and if they would cut it to size. I was told that they would as long as all I needed were straight cuts. That was fine. Went to the store a few hours later, and the girl behind the customer service counter said that they don't cut plexiglas. I mentioned how I had called and asked about it earlier, and then she rudely told me that there was no way anyone told me that they'd cut plexiglas. She then turned to the three other guys behind the counter and asked them whether they had told me they'd cut it, basically shoving it in my face that I was wrong. Pretty rotten. Finally, she showed me where the plexiglas was and then nonchalantly mentioned that if I was buying a thin enough sheet, I could just cut it myself with a utility knife. "Wow," I thought, "thanks for mentioning that earlier!" I was so fuming by this point that I probably could have just snapped the plexi in half over my knee. Unfortunately, there's no other hardware store near my place and since I don't have a car, I'm pretty much stuck with this crap they pass off as service. read more

We have recently ordered on November 29, 2018, a bathroom vanity from the New Canadians Lumber on 804 Dupont St, Toronto. The sales person was Mr. Steve Podpecan.The item was delivered on December 1, 2018, however, to our surprise, the vanity was not delivered in a box, but instead it was simply wrapped in some plastic sheets and some foam. Asking why the vanity is not in it's original box, we were told that "that's how they deliver things", period. A couple of days later the contractor came to install the vanity. After removing all wrappings we found out that the vanity, although similar, was not the model we have ordered, To make matters worse, the installation instructions included in the package were again for a different type of vanity. Tried calling the Quebec manufacturer, couldn't find anybody speaking english. In short, the service offered by New Canadians Lumber is non existent, and we would not recommend them to anybody. Great Place! They gave me great advice on my new kitchen. Designed my kitchen and the installer was great! The tile selection is vast and great prices! Possibly too much to choose from, a little overwhelming. But an in house designer helped me with colour choices.... I need help there. At times the store is packed with customers and seems chaotic, and can be annoying when other customers interrupt... But it seems like a place where everyone knows each other. I feel I can trust them, and will shop there again. read more

It's pretty impressive that the reviews, since 2010, have been consistent in calling out New Canadians Lumber for their poor service. And now, May 2013, those comments are still spot on. Fortunately I do not live nearby and therefore do not have to rely on their bad attitude, rude demeanour and might I add, really horrible parking lot. You could get killed just trying to walk to their front door: between all the trucks and vans jockeying for space, backing up with no regard to the surroundings, and going the wrong way in what was some feeble attempt to direct vehicles to the pickup zone, it's an accident waiting to happen. Once inside, unless you are a contractor or a personal friend, you may as well go right back out again. They are their own little enclave; do not trespass. But you know, they have pretty good washrooms hidden in the bathroom fixtures section. It's why I gave them one star. read more

A completely unfathomable customer service system. To return an item you must take a number at customer service (10 minute wait) and then go stand in line at the checkout (another 10-15 minute wait) while they process an untold amount of carbon copies of printer paper for every order. Busy busy place, and so the staff are sometimes curt, but if you are in there when it's not too busy you will get some very helpful and very good advice. It does have a crazy layout, which is a nice change from the big box suburban stores. Terrible customer service and they either don't know their stuff or are trying to sell you what they have regardless of what you want. They deliver whenever they want not when agreed upon and some of the drivers are very rude and lazy, some are very good but it doesn't make up for the total lack of respect for the customer. I always try and shop at the little guy and support them regardless of cost but if a large chain opened near them I think they would suffer severely. I certainly won't shop there anymore. I find Downtown Lumber(Home Hardware) on Ossington to be much better in all aspects. read more

They have a good location which saves an awful drive to the big box lumber stores. The prices are very competitive and delivery charges are lower than big box stores. The selection is good but they do not carry much high end stuff. Tile prices are very good but it is hit and miss if they have what you like. They make custom doors which is great for those old houses in the inner city. Yes the parking is usually a pain but parking is always a problem in the inner city. You can also fax your order into the sales desk and pay by credit card and arrange delivery. read more

Yes this store serves mainly contractors that buy large volumes of expensive materials and have been doing so for many years, often decades. Running a store like this must be a lot of work and quite frankly if you need to be made to feel better about yourself, tune in to Barney The Dinosaur. The knowledge and service they offer is fine, and in almost every case of building-industry standard. Yes they have attitude, they're human. But they can also help you out if you lose your snotty attitudes to begin with. Now go home, grab your Teddy and cry on your pillow because the world doesn't always have time for grownups that sulk at the slightest little thing. Get real. What a bunch of babies! read more

I have been shopping here regulary since 1998 and after nearly two decades the grouchy service is still a great source of dinnertime amusement among family members. They are often spectacularly rude or dismissive. Most recently, we bought twelve bags of limestone screenings and when the guy in the service yard looked at the order and realized, yes, he'd have to pick up twelve bags of limestone screenings, he said "are you f#ckin kidding me?!" But when it's a block away and they have pretty much everything I need, it's easier just to laugh. I also find their prices very reasonable, and the selection of tools is good. But as mentioned earlier, don't expect the same level of expertise from all staff. Do a little research of your own if you need anything complicated. Other plus-factors: they don't mind dogs in the stiore and they give them cookies; they are locally owned and hire disabled folks, and to be fair I've heard them be pretty good with stupid questions. read more
