The leadership stands up to cultural forces that seek to undermine the church, instead of bending the knee in submission, as we've seen others do. The membership skews very young, is fairly diverse, yet united, even with the multilingual (English/Spanish) services, which they continuously seek to integrate with another. It is a wonderful thing to be part of. I grew up hearing stories each Sunday about Jesus, but First Irving is where I finally came to know Christ... And what a blessing it has been.

Nurturing spirits, confirming human dignity, living our progressive values and giving back to the community, these are ideas I aspire to, which this church embodies. Of all the churches I have prayed in since I was little, this is by far my favorite. Compared to other Catholic churches in the area, St. Elizabeth is fairly large. I generally attend the Saturday mass at 5 p.m., since I have to work on Sunday mornings. The services are pretty standard, with lots of music and a very diverse group of parishioners. Getting to the church is pretty straightforward. It's right off Hampton Road, and it's not too far off from I-20. There's plenty of parking space, even when there's a special celebration going on. The inside of the church is very spacious. There are also lots of windows, which gives the whole church an "ambient" feel. There are a couple of things I particularly like about this parish. First is the fact that announcements are made at the beginning of mass. This is great because it gives people an additional five or so minutes to arrive, in case they're running late. The second thing I like is how everyone greets each other at the beginning of mass, which is pretty unique, and really sets the tone for the rest of the service. I enjoy listening all the priests and deacons, especially during their homilies. But my favorite priest is Father Ben. He has a way of tying in the readings and gospels with a lot of our everyday living in the 21st century. Plus, he almost always has a joke of the day, which is a nice way to end his sermons. If you're new to the area and looking for a place to celebrate our faith with the community, you should give St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church a try.
