Maybe the Raf Simmons or Rick Owens of babershops. It's highly respected amongst the classy but cool enough for the young and fly guys. Obviously Rich is the head designer but he has a slew of guys beside him that are great cutters. I usually get a Dark Cesar tapered sides. Rich uses the best equipment SC or Babyliss pros. Somehow, however, Jose (the owner) has managed to make the new set-up feel like a regular, relaxing barbershop with the old school feel, while also making it much safer than other haircut places around here. For example: a couple months back, I went to a (decent) place in Sunnyside for a badly-needed haircut; they made do however they could (plastic dividers, masks, etc.), but they still had like 10-20 people in a relatively small indoor at the same time. Sitting still for 30 - 45 minutes with complete strangers and little to no ventilation isn't something I'd like to do unless I HAVE to these days. The Woodside Barbershop on the other hand has managed to avoid all of that, by setting up appointments (which you can easily book in advance) so you come in for YOUR 30-minute haircut. Just you and Jose, who takes real good care of your hair and is engaging/fun to chat with into the bargain. Will definitely be coming back here soon.

I'm originally from South Jersey and had the same barber in South Jersey for over 10+ years, so for me to find the right barber after moving to NY for 3.5 years was definitely challenging. Today Sunday I had to see Ruben's partner because allowing my friend to perform my cuts due to illness and transportation issues left me with some manifestation of a jagged bonsai on top of my head. I needed it blended and evened out. I go for a short simple cut, nothing fancy but the skill of a barber is demonstrated not only at the point of cut but when the hair grows out, it should grow out blended and fall properly. I am so happy I got my wheels back and can get to the shop on a regular basis. While I know most barbers do not like to handle women's hair, for the cut I get, they are perfect, you will not be disappointed. I used to go to an old school place on Long Island where a Russian barber would give you a shot of vodka while you sat down. I loved that place, but it's a bit far to travel now. The Skillman Barber Shop is pretty close, so decided to give that a try. It's pretty easy to schedule an appointment or walk in. I did the latter and was fit in after a reasonable amount of wait. The owner took care of me and the process was pleasant. The shave was a bit more light-handed than I was used to, but that's totally fine. The process was thorough and professional. Overall, I'm happy with the shave and service and would consider going back. One thing to note though is that someone that was taken care of before me had a bit of back and forth on services rendered and price. I think they were expecting one thing (or asked for one thing) and something else happened. I won't speak to that too much since I didn't overhear enough, but I would advise to make sure to clarify things before you sit down so you don't have any misunderstandings.

The first time was for a regular haircut and herbal facial. Those were great. the second time I came, I got a head shave. It was great. Should be noted that the first chair (closest to the window/entrance) took care of me those two times. But this third time is why I'll never return. Came to get a head shave today. I sit down and nothing is quite remarkable about it, except for the fact that the guy cut me MULTIPLE times. I kinda shrugged it off the first time, but it kept on happening and he guy acted like nothing was wrong. That alone wouldn't make me hesitate to come back, I would just sit with someone else, but the unforgiveable part is that he wiped away the blood, every time, with his thumb. I can't think of anything more unhygienic. The other thing is that he had a paper towel hanging from the frock to wipe the excess hair off of the razor, but chose instead to use the palm of his hand. Again, just seems super unhygienic. I legit went straight home, took a shower, then soaked a paper towel in alcohol to dab my entire head. I was worried about it getting infected. I'd give the place one-star for this experience, but the first chair guy is good people and did me right. I don't see myself coming back here. Maybe it was just the one guy that's bad, but I just can't risk that again.
