Good place. Came here to get a hot towel shave. It's far tougher to find a good hot towel shave than it should be, especially in this part of Queens. I used to go to an old school place on Long Island where a Russian barber would give you a shot of vodka while you sat down. I loved that place, but it's a bit far to travel now. The Skillman Barber Shop is pretty close, so decided to give that a try. It's pretty easy to schedule an appointment or walk in. I did the latter and was fit in after a reasonable amount of wait. The owner took care of me and the process was pleasant. The shave was a bit more light-handed than I was used to, but that's totally fine. The process was thorough and professional. Overall, I'm happy with the shave and service and would consider going back. One thing to note though is that someone that was taken care of before me had a bit of back and forth on services rendered and price. I think they were expecting one thing (or asked for one thing) and something else happened. I won't speak to that too much since I didn't overhear enough, but I would advise to make sure to clarify things before you sit down so you don't have any misunderstandings. read more

As I moved to the area recently, I needed a new barber and I found this place as it had good reviews. The people were very nice to me but the quality of the haircut was the WORST that I've had in 8 years. I asked for a regular fade down to the skin but they just didn't understand what a fade is. After I told them it was way too high and the fade isn't there, another barber tried to save it. He kept saying that I was right and they could fix it for me. Although they tried to save it, it just wasn't working and simply they lacked the skill. As much as I liked the people, I would never come here for a haircut again. The best there is. Prior to Oksana the new owner my hair was cut, shaved and looked like a pineapple too often . A good barber should know what the final product will look like before they pick up the scissors. Oksana a throw back to when hair cuts were a service . Oksana is Amazing! Since the pandemic, I had been doing my own hair cuts. Being foliccly challenged, it's not hard for me - I just shaved my head and buzzed my beard to stubble. When I saw the sign at Skillman Barber Shop for a first time customer special for $20, I gave them a shot. I'm so glad it did! Definitely got more than I paid for. Oksana took me as a walk in and gave me a great beard trim (that I got compliments on.) Not only is she very skilled, she's also super nice and made me feel so comfortable. The shop is very tidy and state of the art. I'll definitely be going back because now I've decided to keep some length on my beard since I've found a great barber shop! I've gone to these guys multiple times because they are conveniently close to my apartment. And every time they just can't get it right; and every time they ask me the same questions.... (first time here? Who cut your hair last? ). God forbid you ask them to do a scissor cut trim instead of a fade. Complete disregard to the shape of my head. And they have the costumer pay for credit card fees which is absolutely unacceptable in my opinion. Did I just walk into a ghetto bodega? Because that's the ONLY place that charges credit card fees to their customers. No professional hair cutter in my life has ever asked me to pay cash to avoid tax and then say that the tax is a cc fee? Go to Nelson on Queens Blvd. no cc fees and better haircuts. Sorry guys won't be back again. $38 for a barber haircut is just unreasonable. read more

Ripoff!!! We agreed on a price to trim part of my beard and hair. The young barber ended up trimming all my beard which I accepted. While he was doing so, the boss talked to him in Russian even though we all spoke English. If they decided to change the price at that moment, they didn't tell me. When I was about to pay, the cost was nearly 70% extra. I will never come back to this place. Thank you for all your messages. Actually, the hairstylist asked you for the cost so it wasn't his mistake. I never asked for a discount but a fair price for a slight trim hair/beard. I asked specific questions before making a decision. At the end of the service, when he told me the higher price and I expressed my discomfort, adding that I wouldn't come back, you were there all the time and not say anything to me but good night. The whole service took about 20 minutes even with the extra trimming of my beard; however the price jumped from $30 to $50. You decided to change the price speaking in another language without letting me accept or not. Total bad customer service. All is recorded, excellent. You should've just started with that. Now any customer who want to can see who is telling the truth and who is lying here. They will judge and that's going to be the end of this unnecessary back and forth. 53 minutes? LOL. Mark is a good barber that charges $30 a cut. Although he is good, he does not understand how to keep an appointment. I made my appointment for 11am and he starts on a guy at 10:52. What the hell is that? If he was finishing up on a guy and its goes over, i would understand, but he was starting on a new guy just 7 mins before my appointment. Other barbers will wait for their customers and give a customer an extra 10 mins if running late, but not Mark. If a Customer comes in at 10:53 and your appointment is at 11, be prepared to wait, because he wont wait for you. By the way, this already happenend twice before. read more

Found this place on yelp after moving into the neighborhood a few months ago. Glad I no longer have to travel to brooklyn or manhattan to get the kind of haircut I want! Mark has great customer service and will balance between giving you what you ask for and also offering his professional advice based on years of experience. Hate to break the chain of 5 star reviews but here's my experience. Got my hair cut by Arvin the first time I went here. He did an excellent job on the haircut, constantly consulting me about what I wanted, and then did a great job on the beard trim too. He charged me $30 and I gave him a $10 tip. Went back about 7 weeks later and I got a hair cut and beard trim from Veronica. She wasn't as precise as Arvin but still gave me a decent haircut and a good beard trim. Upon going to pay, she asked if I were paying cash or card. I asked how much the services cost and she told me $45. Since I was only expecting to pay $40 including tip I had to pay by card and got charged $49.05. I've never been charged more than $30 for a haircut and beard trim at other barbershops so unfortunately I will not be returning here. I was satisfied with the service, but was disappointed in the price discrepancies. read more

Whenever I move to a new area, finding a good barber is really important. I moved to Woodside almost two years ago and luckily, Skillman Barbershop was right in the neighborhood. The shop owner's name is Mark and he is extremely passionate and dedicated to his work as an art and his business as a growing business. He has two other barbers in the shop who have also done my hair and I always leave happy. He will always oversee what they're doing just in case there is something he notices and wants to touch up. Everyone is friendly and I've had great conversations in there. They cut your hair and give you a shape up if you want one. They use straight razors for your hairline. My hairline is a mess so this is crucial to my haircut. They always offer you a bottle of water and there are tv's playing funny television shows yo keep you entertained. There are comfortable couches while you wait with magazines like any other shop. I'll be honest and say I've only waited maybe once or twice after doing a walk in. Mark puts you on a text thread to let you know when the shop will not be open or when he himself will not be working. One day they were closing and I walked in. The next day I was going on a trip for my Anniversary, he called his wife and told her he'd be home a little late and took care of me. There is also a frequenter loyalty card which gets hole punched every time you visit. If you visit enough you can get half off of a haircut. Highly recommended! read more

This place SUUUUUUCKs. All fluff and no substance. It took my barber and HOUR AND a HALF to do a fade, and so over priced. And an hour to do my son's haircut too. I could have gone down the street and paid less than half for the same haircut and better conversation, in a third the time at least- but I was worried there would be a line. Thought this would be faster, holy molly I was wrong. There is a reason this place is basically always empty.
