I met with Rachael when I was just a few weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. While I didn't have a bad experience with my first provider I felt like I wanted something different. I fell in love with Rachael as soon as I met her. Her knowledge, her energy, her confidence, her smile, her ability to set me at ease... the list goes on. There's a certain comfort I can't fully explain when you're with the same provider throughout the entire prenatal, birth, and postpartum period. Being with one provider means you really get to know and trust each other. And Rachael really knows her stuff. She is an expert on all things pregnancy, birth and postpartum. She has a way of letting you know when something is important without instilling fear and anxiety in you which I feel is so common in a more clinical setting. There was one moment during my pregnancy when I got worried that my baby wasn't moving as much as I was used to. I texted Rachael and she immediately responded: "Meet me at my office and I'll check you, I can be there in 20 minutes." So she met us there, groceries in hand, and checked on the baby because that's the kind of provider she is. And the baby was fine which meant I was fine, and I felt so thankful so have a real relationship with my provider so that a meeting like this was even possible. My birth experience was picture perfect. I think about it every day. Rachael and her amazing birth assistant Cassandra work so well together and are perfectly in sync with each other. It was calm and comforting. They were supportive and encouraging right when I needed it. They quietly observed, checked the necessary vitals, and let labor naturally occur just as it was meant to. After my son was born they did his first exam right there on my bed while I rested and watched. Then they did the next few postpartum visits and baby checks at my home as well. It felt like such a luxury. We are so lucky to have Rachael providing this exceptional care in our community. We ended up with Rachael by accident. The week before I was due with our first, the midwife we chose had a serious family emergency out of state and had to leave. Rachael was her backup and we set up an in-person meet 2 days before I was due... we never made it to that appointment. Our first meeting was at my house, when I was halfway through labor, wearing only a bralette. "Hi, I'm Rachael!" She said cheerily. She helped me through what she calls an "amazing first birth". And my husband and I really connected with her. She makes it easy! She handled half my postpartum visits. And we decided that next time we got pregnant - it'd be Rachael again. Fast forward a few years, and I'm pregnant again! Having Rachael the whole way through was amazing! We developed so much more relationship and had time to chat about all the birth things and had an incredible 2hr home-birth! About Rachael: She's incredibly knowledgeable, beyond competent (super on top of everything), genuinely kind and nonjudgmental, incredibly easy to talk to, she has fantastic upbeat energy, all the medical paperwork stuff is made super simple, she looks out for your best, is a great communicator and is somehow available 24/7 because she responded so quickly to my texts. (I don't know how she does it... does she ever sleep!?) She encouraged all my ideas about how I wanted to improve things for my second home-birth. I loved every chat we had - at every meeting we had. She makes you feel good and beyond capable of having the best birth experience you can have and backs your choices 100%. Even when she has concerns, she never talks down to/over you and is happy to explain things. She treats you as an equal, even though she's 100% got the most knowledge and experience in the room. This is my second time having Rachael for my midwife and if I have a third child, she will be the first to know. Both of my experiences with Rachael have been nothing short of excellent and supportive. Essentially everything that I could hope for in pregnancy and birth, and they were two very different experiences. My firstborn was at the hospital, where Rachael played a major role in advocating and empowering me to make the best decisions for me and my baby. My second was born at home into water, during the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic (4/8/2020). Rachael has a way of building trust and rapport with her families that makes going through this process feel safe and empowering. She is available to answer any questions and makes sure you understand the information and options available to you so you can make the best decision for you and your baby. Safety is her number one priority. This was especially evident during my most recent birth and being in the middle of stay at home order due to the Coronavirus. Rachael and her assistant took extra precautions, such as wearing masks through out their time in my home, disinfecting their equipment immediately after leaving my home, and changing their clothes before and after leaving my home , to ensure the health and safety of me, my family, and the other families that she serves. What I have enjoyed most about having Rachael for my midwife during both my pregnancies and births, is the trust and feeling of security I have felt with her during my most vulnerable times. There was a moment during my second birth where I was panicking from the pain (something I didn't really experience with my first birth due to the epidural). Rachael calmly but firmly reassured me that what I was experiencing was completely normal and that it did in fact hurt. She also told me that she was going to help me listen to my body instead of fighting it (which is my natural response to pain and panic). That moment for me was magical and transformative. I was able to relax and focus on working with my body. This was largely possible due to how much trust I was able to build with Rachael over the course of my pregnancy. Rachael Cook is a blessing! After switching my care over to her in my third trimester, I had found the support and encouragement I didn't realize was possible. My previous experiences with other pregnancies and for the first 2/3 of this pregnancy, had led me to believe that birthing a baby was a medical emergency and that being treated as a patient file, rather than an individual, was the standard for care. I was so happy to find Rachael, and to develop a connection with the person responsible for our care. She linked arms with me and walked me through everything. I could truly not possibly imagine a better, more supportive midwife. My birth was crazy (baby ended up coming on the floor of her office). Rachael exuded this calm that bounced off of me and made me feel safe and in control even in all the chaos and madness. My son's shoulders got stuck & she knew exactly what to do- she calmly told me I needed to put my leg on her shoulder and out he came! In hind site, I see that this situation could have been a lot scarier if I hadn't had a provider who was so confident and grounded. It's her powerful combination of being both calm, but also logical and serious when needed. I had a few different medical issues during my pregnancy and I knew that, without a shadow of a doubt, I could trust her judgement. She was so balanced- not like any other medical provider I have ever met. Most are either so biased towards doing things "naturally" or biased towards preferring traditional medicine- she was biased only towards truth and results. She is absolutely respectful of a mother's wants as well, which is so rare and valuable. Rachael is beyond incredible and it is very clear that she is in this profession because it is her highest calling & purpose. Giving birth in 2020 came with a ton of unknowns and emotions. It felt like as soon as we found out we were expecting that the excitement was ripped away from us with Covid. I was originally going to an OBGYN and my Husband was not allowed at the appointments, and then we found out that family and siblings weren't going to be allowed at the delivery. This being his first child I knew this was not going to work. I frantically started to search for a new option. We quickly decided on a homebirth and started to ask around the birthing community for referrals. Rachel came highly recommended by multiple midwives. From the moment I spoke with her on the phone my excitement was restored. Over the course of my pregnancy Rachel and her doula Hope became like family. My Husband and I looked forward to every appointment, even with the hour drive to get there. My pregnancy came with a few bumps and Rachel was always quick to answer all phone calls and texts about questions, no matter the time of day or how silly of a question. The day of the birth was long and full of ups and downs. Contractions would come and go; we would get excited and then feel let down when they would stop. Rachel talked me through the whole process and kept me calm. The birth was AMAZING. Rachel and Hope were absolute rockstars. The night was full of laughter and joy. The birth was picture perfect and more beautiful than I could have ever imagined giving birth could be. I would recommend Rachel to anyone. Rachael and her student, Cassandra, are my fairy godmothers. They are the best, funnest, grounded, most down-to-earth and intelligent midwives in Olympia, Washington, and I am certain the whole world.
