I was impressed by his professionalism and his actual interest in my complaint. An absolute GREAT experience. He has had me in The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods on three separate occasions. I was in for two sets of biopsies and once for insertion of "SpaceOar" for protection during radiation. This hospital, as far as I'm concerned, has always gone above and beyond what should be required for ALL hospitals. The doctors, nurses, orderlies and every other person always goes out of their way to be certain your experience will the best that they can give you. I would recommend this to anyone for whatever ails you. Too bad I can only give 5 stars because it is wsorth so mjuch more.

From the moment I arrived, through surgery, and into recovery, I was surrounded by people who truly care about what they do. Dr. Michael Shumaker, my surgeon, and the entire operating room team were absolutely outstanding. Going into a second surgery can come with a lot of emotions, but I had complete confidence in their skill, professionalism, and teamwork. I am deeply grateful for the care and precision that went into my procedure. I also want to recognize the entire surgical staff in the room that day. While I may not know every name, I know I was in the hands of a highly coordinated and dedicated team that ensured my safety and success. Recovery was the most challenging part, especially when it came to pain control--but this is where this hospital truly showed its strength. The recovery team worked hard to get my pain under control. They did not give up on me, and that matters more than anything. Pain after surgery is real, and having a team that continues to adjust, respond, and care makes all the difference. A very special and heartfelt thank you to Mike Gemma, the anesthesiologist. What he did for me went above and beyond. He stepped in, advocated for me, and made sure my pain was taken seriously by speaking directly with the nursing staff. That kind of advocacy is rare, and it changed my entire experience. I will never forget that. I also want to recognize the nurses and staff who made a lasting impact on me: Patrick D--there are not enough words to thank you. You cared for me during one of my most vulnerable moments, and you did it with dignity, compassion, and zero judgment. What you did mattered more than you probably even realize, and I will never forget your kindness. Patrick G and Anna--you both were phenomenal. Thank you for staying on top of my medications and helping keep my pain controlled. Your attentiveness, responsiveness, and commitment to my comfort made a huge difference, especially during the hardest hours when staying ahead of the pain mattered most. Brooke--thank you for being part of my care and for communicating with the anesthesiologist to help improve my pain management. That effort did not go unnoticed and played a role in getting things where they needed to be. Jessica from Physical Therapy--you were an absolute hoot. You made me laugh, kept me motivated, and somehow made physical therapy feel less intimidating and not nearly as rough as it could have been. That kind of energy is a gift, and it made a real difference in my recovery. Valerie--your housekeeping and hospitality were truly exceptional. You did more than keep the room clean. You brought comfort into it. Your kindness, attention to detail, and warm presence made a huge difference in how I felt during my stay. And to every single staff member involved--from the surgical team, to recovery, to physical therapy, to housekeeping, to those working behind the scenes--thank you. It truly takes a team to deliver this level of care, and it showed in every interaction I had. Having now gone through this experience twice, I can confidently say this is a team that not only provides excellent medical care, but also treats patients with compassion, dignity, respect, and humanity. Tell me it was 11 o'clock but try to be there by 10:30 which I didn't recall that and the next day when they sent me a confirmation confirming my appointment saying 11 o'clock like I must've mest that up so I went then about 10 min after 11 I couldn't get a shirt on nor my pants I was trying to get there with out anyone helping me that's when receptionist started yelling, she was yelling at me, telling me that I had to reschedule my appointment because she told me the day before, when I was still out of it from the accident.i was going to have tobe there half an hour early to fill out paperwork and I lost it for a min and raised my voice I then got control of my self and rescheduled make sure that my insurance was good and then told her what kind of insurance I had for the 3 rd time so then we rescheduled. He has performed three total joint replacement surgeries on me and is about to do another. In addition, he has helped manage any other orthopedic issues that have arisen during the last 27 years. I have always had excellent outcomes. A kind and compassionate individual, Dr. Piston, along with his exceptional team of physician's assistants and nurses, works diligently to ensure his patients achieve excellent results. Not only is Dr. Piston a highly skilled surgeon, but he is also a talented teacher. He has always gone beyond in my care before, during, and after my surgeries. Prior to each surgery, Dr. Piston took as much time as necessary to answer all of my questions and to address any concerns I had. He has a knack for describing procedures or conditions in a way that is easy to understand. After each surgery, he followed my care and progress closely to ensure that I was progressing as per his expectations. Also important is Dr. Piston's rehabilitation team: it is an integral part of his practice. Each member is skilled, supportive, and experienced. The therapists and assistants encourage patients to work hard because they know that the quality of rehab strongly affects the patient's outcome. Not only is Dr. Piston a knowledgeable and skilled surgeon, but he truly cares about his patients and demonstrates that in his interactions with them and their families. He sees his patients as members of his team and includes them in decisions regarding their treatment. Now we are in the Hospice stage of care while in residence at Marian and my admiration for the collaborative team care only grows stronger. The facility, rooms and grounds are immaculately maintained and rural setting is lovely. The residents are friendly, kind and caring as well. Maureen, the activity director arranges a wide range of activities including pottery, painting, jewelry making, yoga, off-site activities and so much more. While transitioning a loved one into a support facility is a tuff choice, my mom flourished in this setting and I'm so pleased we selected Marian so many years ago. First off, she fraternizes with staff, part of the problem. Very shady. She doesnt have the education or empathy needed to run a place like this. "Personal experience" doesn't count Ms. Woodford. Addiction is serious. We weren't treated with dignity or respect by the owner, Cindy in the midst of the hardest time in our lives. They kick people out onto the streets (with nowhere to go) over small infractions and bring new people in. The more people in and out, the more money. It is a churn and burn place, they kick people out and make money with every new intake. Some addicts have nowhere to go and have gone on to die as a result of being let go too soon. Addiction is a hard and serious issue that takes time and empathy to work through. Some of the staff was ok, but many (like Cindy) are cold and mean to patients. Cindy Bermea Woodford comes off with a superiority complex that is off putting to addicts and families. Perhaps a few less reps in the gym and a little more empathy for human beings is in order. The day I met her, she insulted me when I came to pick up my family member (she had never met me before!) while I cried. I was stunned. One of the hardest days of our lives as they kicked him out with nowhere to go. This is very common here. Dealing with addicts is no doubt hard, but it takes people with big hearts, empathy and patience to deal with these issues. This woman does not possess those traits. My family member has been sober for 6 months due to family support and AA, not this place. Stay away from First Step Recovery. It is run by a self-centered, cold egoist with secrets. Fraternizing with staff. Not professional. Pics are on social media. Perhaps she'd be better off running a gym than a recovery center. Then again, she wouldn't be able to pocket as much money. Shame.
