I recommend the surgeons at Orthopedic Associated of North Chelmsford, MA. As a retired RN with…read moreO.R. experience, I tend to be very critical of surgeons. Since 2019, I've had several procedures to alleviate the pain of osteoarthritis. First, a left rotator cuff repair then, in the fall, a left knee replacement, by Dr. Scott Sigman. High praise for him and his team. I had minimal post op pain and was walking the day of surgery. Several years later I had the pleasure of bilateral hip replacements, 1 yr apart, by Dr. Stephen Designa. Again, minimal post op discomfort and, with physical therapy, return to normal with no more pain. And such tiny incisions--I can barely see them! Thank you and bless you, Dr. Designa. Now, in 2026 I'm back for more magic, seeing Dr. Howard Wu for bilateral shoulder arthritis . He is urging me to have the surgeries, first the left which is giving me the most discomfort and limited range of motion, then, after a time, the right. But, since I'm elderly and also caring for my disabled husband, I've been putting it off. He's right,of course, I need them ,and I'm not afraid but he listens to me and, I think, understands. It's comforting to know that, when I'm ready, he'll do his best to give me real golden years. We baby boomers are lucky. Modern technology and talented surgeons. Replace the old, worn out joints and we'll feel better. Maria S, Lowell, MA August 2026

From my experience, I felt his bedside manner could be better. I often left feeling like my injury and concerns were being minimized and that I wasn't being fully heard. My impression is that he has a very direct, surgeon-focused approach, which may work well for some patients but wasn't the best fit for me. I can't say he's a bad doctor. However, beyond providing me with time off from work, I don't feel much was done to fully evaluate all of my complaints. For example, I never received comprehensive strength testing for the various issues I reported. One thing that also concerned me was that the office seemed to use a standard template in the medical notes. Some of the statements about my care did not accurately reflect what occurred during my visits, which I found frustrating. I've also spoken with three other people who were not particularly happy with their experiences when I mentioned Dr. Alter. Of course, that's anecdotal, and it doesn't mean he isn't an excellent surgeon. This review is simply my personal experience as a patient. I will say Amanda the medical receptionist was great, every request I asked for, she promptly responded to me with the information I needed.

Most of my experience over the years is with Al Visnick but I've also seen Judy & Todd who are fantastic too. Most recently they weren't under my insurance but I went there out of pocket anyway because I don't trust anyone but Al Visnick to work on my spine. I have chronic issues with my spine and neck, exacerbated by my profession. Among his many talents, Al is an expert on the spine. Not only did he completely adjust my thoracic spine and neck to be better than ever, but he trained me to change my working environment and setup as well as my postural habits to the point where my chronic pain has essentially disappeared so long as I follow his advice. And because of the great work he did on my neck and spine, along with the simple at-home exercises he taught me to maintain it, I am able to very quickly get back to being pain free if I ever slip back into old habits. He's taught me to manage this essential part of my life so that I can work longer and more productively without any pain. I am forever grateful to him for this as I'd not be able to do my job without it. In addition to Al being a miracle worker, there's Todd, who is meticulous and amazing. My husband went to him for his chronic back issues. He used to regularly throw his back out and suffer a lot each time, but not only did Todd fix it every time, he taught my husband how to avoid re-injuring himself, as well as how to do maintenance and recovery exercises and stretched at home to the point that my husband hasn't had to go in for many years now. I've also gone to Judy a few times and find her extremely helpful not just for the physical therapy but also for her attentiveness, the questions she asks, and the incredible advice she gives. She had a gift for honing in on things you should be doing differently to reduce chronic pain, so even one session with her is really helpful.

Scott listens to what I am saying about my pain/comfort levels, and keeps a close eye when I am doing the excercises out on the floor. Everyone here is friendly and extremely helpful. This is the only place I would go to rehab my damaged parts.

I began seeing Dr. Gerber after I had a snowmobile mishap and had a hairline fracture on my hip, resulting later in a torn meniscus because of how I favored my leg. I continue to see Dr. Gerber for Patellofemoral Syndrome a.k.a. runners knee. Dr. Gerber has worked with me on pain management, which doesn't resolve taking pain medications. He's provided me with at-home stretch exercises, as well as physical therapy. I also get bilateral knee injections to help relieve bone-on-bone degeneration. Dr. Gerber has always "listened" to how I was feeling to come up with the best treatment plan for me - no two patients are the same. When I have my office visits, Dr. Gerber always asks not just about me, but also about my son (he had a health scare 5 years ago). He also talks about his family and grandchildren (one of his daughters has twins on the way) and has another grandchild. He's an MD first of course, but also a great human who cares about his patients and overall well-being. In 2022, I moved an hour and a half away from his office. Because he is such a great MD and human, I drive an hour and a half for a 20-minute appointment which speaks volumes in itself. My husband is also a patient who has had bilateral rotor cuff/bicep tear surgery. I've always been greeted pleasantly from my arrival to the nurse escorting me, to the x-ray techs, his secretary, his PA, and so forth. Everyone makes me feel welcome, and I see the same care and respect for other patients. I will continue to be a patient of Orthopedic Surgical Associates and recommend them and Dr. Gerber for the best care. I know you won't be disappointed.
