I had a deeply disappointing and costly experience with Dr. Carpenos at New England Spine and Disc. I came in with leg pain caused by two degenerating discs pinching a nerve. During my initial visit, Dr. Carpenos recommended spinal decompression therapy -- a treatment not covered by insurance. He then started to talk to me like a snake oil salesman: fast and confusing. I explained that I had a very limited budget and needed clarity before committing. So I asked him to slow down and I asked some very specific questions about how the treatment wold work, what the success rate typically was, and what I could expect if I decided to follow the treatment plan. Instead of answering my questions calmly, he became visibly annoyed and said he felt "pressured" by me. I reminded him that it was MY body and my very limited, hard-earned money -- and I was the one feeling pressured to spend it without him having the patience to explain this therapy that insurance wouldn't even cover a significant portion of. His first response was to say that financial hardship shouldn't be a barrier to treatment. When I said I'd have to decline since I couldn't afford the full amount he wanted (Close to 4,000 as I recall) he suggested fewer visits for about half the price. , When I expressed concern and asked if I'd still get relief he assured me I would, so I agreed to take part in the treatment. But at the end of the treatment, I felt no improvement. When I reminded him of his earlier assurance, he said, "I expected that you'd feel a bit better, see the results, want more improvement, and then commit to the final visits." He'd completely ignored my statement at the beginning that there WAS no more money. I felt completely misled and taken advantage of. The experience was not only financially draining but physically uncomfortable. His chiropractic adjustments were rushed, and during one session, he failed to check the placement of my arms during a bear hug/anterior thoracic adjustment. When "hugged" me sharply my fists were jammed into my voice box which hurt so I reflexively pushed back. He asked what was wrong and I explained what had happened. The following week, he asked if my cold was better. When I looked at him, confused, he said "Well, last week you had a sore throat, didn't you?" [It was surreal, like he just was unable to take any responsibility for his own actions.] He also gave questionable medical advice outside his expertise -- once telling me not to use sunscreen despite a family history of skin cancer -- and another time I heard him telling his staff that he'd advised another patient to ignore their cancer doctor's recommendations and to follow his own. Dr. Carpenos' demeanor throughout my treatment was pushy, rude, and evasive when asked direct questions. His team failed to track the decompression machine's pressure settings, so I had to remember my own numbers to ensure proper progression -- a detail that made me feel my investment wasn't respected. If you read his responses to other negative reviews, you'll see a pattern: sarcasm, deflection, and a refusal to take responsibility. I strongly caution anyone considering treatment here. While some patients may find relief, many don't -- and Dr. Carpenos seems far more focused on securing payment than on assessing whether spinal decompression is truly appropriate for your condition. read more

Reported everything exactly as it happened. The entire appointment didn't last 20 minutes including "treatment." There was no explaining except the one item of feeling improvement once they left - there was none and it got worse. The rest of the time was just rudeness and yelling. So sad he doesn't deal in reality or truth and so many others have had the same experience as we did. read more

This guy is like a used car salesman. He comes off really genuine, but then tries to pressure you and even can insult you until you decide to do his program . When I told him I had to think about whether I wanted to sign up for his program, he asked me what do I have to think about "the word" I said no I need to just think about the program. And his staff is also trying to be overly friendly until maybe you're not happy with something, and then they become very abrupt. This guy does not believe in doctors! But he dresses with a white coat and a telescope, and makes believe he looks like a doctor. He's a complete phony. read more

I began treatment here with great confidence and attention to my needs seemed prevalent. I started treatment after securing a loan to cover "my share" of the cost since insurance wouldn't cover my spinal decompression treatments. After 15-20 treatments, I lamented that my pain had not subsided, but had gotten worse. As I got code to the end of the series I was told by an employee that I needed to consider a different treatment as this one didn't seem to be helping for an additional cost. I had to suspend treatment for a few weeks to handle another issue and called the office to get my treatment records to see progress and current condition. It took 3 calls and I finally got an email from the clerk and never heard from Dr. Carpano regarding my progress or lack there of. I will not be continuing any treatments here and am rescinding my previous praise. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this office based on my experience. read more

Really disappointed with Dr. Carpenos. - he was much more interested in discussing insurance coverage (you have terrible insurance) than as to the reason for the visit and what he could do to help. Just to be clear, I called my insurance company first to make sure we were covered before booking the appointment. There was no examination performed and isn't that funny how he never mentioned the "We offer 2 free visits of nonsurgical spinal decompression". I'd rather pay out of pocket to an out of network provider with a clear desire to treat people because he cares than use my insurance to visit a substandard practitioner. read more

Finally, after more than 6 years suffering with cervical spinal stenosis, I have found relief in the capable hands of Dr Carpenos and his wonderful staff. In the past I have had two epidural shots, four series of trigger shots, pain meds, physical therapy and even tried acupuncture without lasting results. I have been with Dr Carpenos on/off for 14+ years and have had alternative treatments from other doctors. There is no comparison. I have not pursued another back surgery due to the relief I get from my adjustments. Dr. Carpenos's technique allows him to get a true picture of the alignment. I was so looking forward to receiving the treatments that would fix my shoulder, but I was not comfortable with the open floor plan and he seemed somewhat arrogant. As with most medical appointments your insurance card is the first thing they ask for, which I HATE but expect. After hearing his plan and the cost I sadly said I could not afford and his words were "Well then why are you here". What, really, I am hear to get treatment, I didn't know that my insurance wouldn't cover his treatment plan. And besides if he gets $400.00 from me and the new laser machine cost him $5,000 which he stated then after 12 patients it is paid for so maybe lower your rates cuz from what I saw he has a steady stream of patients. read more

I have a long history of back pain and I've seen a lot of chiropractors over the years. Dr. Carpenos is as good as it gets. What sets him apart from other doctors is that he TRULY cares about his patients and will do anything to get them healthy. I have crappy insurance that doesn't cover any part of my treatment, and he worked with me to devise a payment plan that I could afford. He didn't have to - but he did. I had a slipped disc in my back that was pinching a nerve. At my lowest point, I was in so much pain that I could not bear my own weight or walk. My only other option besides the spinal decompression treatments was disc replacement surgery (which would mean months of unpaid medical leave from my job and the inability to financially support myself). The therapy did take months, but I am now in little to no pain. (Think about it - if you break your arm, does it heal overnight? No, it takes time.) I've had back pain for more than 15 years and for the first time since my freshman year of high school I now know what it is like to live pain-free. Honestly, I am surprised to see negative reviews here. Dr. Carp's demeanor and personality are direct (but not uncompassionate) and I can see how some people may not respond well to that. But if you actually just spend 10 minutes talking with him, you realize how passionate he is about making HUGE differences in people's lives and well-being. I have been doing decompression and laser here since June and it has been a game changer for me. I had disc problems and arthritis in my lower back that caused severe lower back pain. I went to pain management and received 2 epidural steroid injections that only gave me very temporary relief. I saw New England Spine and Disc in Connecticut Magazine and came for 2 free visits. I hadn't thought of posting a review. I was just checking the Saturday hours of the practice and saw a couple of negative reviews and felt that I needed to post my experience. I had an appointment for an injection for a bulging disc with an orthopedist. My son, who is a health professional, suggested that I show my MRI to his chiropractor first. I did. I am so happy that I did! The chiropractic treatment with the team completely relieved my numbness and pain. It continues to be good a year later. I have known Dr. Carpenos and his staff for many years. Initially I started going about 10 years ago due to sciatica from a running related injury. Yes I admit I was skeptical, as I feel most people are when they hear the terms chiropractics, cracking spines etc. That was my first serious running injury. With in a few weeks from using different advance tools, instruments and regular adjustments I was back to consistent training. As a former member of Southern Connecticut State University track and field and cross country teams we worked out hard. As a distance runner, I would be averaging about 80-90 miles a week and our bodies endured quite a bit of pounding. My recovery due to sciatica wouldn't have been so easy if it wasn't for Dr. Carpenos. To this day I don't have a primary care physician as I trust Dr. Carpenos and his associate Dr. John to put me back in proper order. As I am currently prepping for my next marathon, the Marine Core marathon in D.C. my body succumbed another injury. For the first time ever in my running career I was dealing with shin splints. I didn't know what caused this inflammation but it limited my exercise a lot for a few weeks. Until this past week, I have had 4 training days with no pain. Even last week I couldn't get through half of a run without substantial pain. The latest tool I used was shockwave therapy and what a difference it has made. Chiropractic care is more than just a one fix thing when injured of any sorts. To me, it's about my overall well being. I feel most people wait until it's to late before something is done.
