Issue: Incredibly rude cashier Cashier: Baron…read moreTime: 6/21/26 at 2:57 PM. As I was paying for my groceries, Baron (gentleman with a rose tattoo on his ear) accused me of throwing my grocery bags in the bagging area. He asked me, "Would you like me to bag your groceries?" To which I said, "Yes please". He then said "Okay, well you threw your bags. Don't throw your bags if you want us to bag them because we are providing a service for you." I was confused because I 100% didn't think I threw my bags and also, it was 100% unintentional if it did seem aggressive. What Baron doesn't know is that I'm a big fan of Sprouts. I am friends with an ex-Sprouts store manager. I also recommended to the Mayor of Hayward himself that we should get a grocery store like Sprouts in Hayward. And I'm also friends with current Sprouts employees. I would never, ever be rude to a Sprouts employee. After I clarified with Baron how exactly I should place my bags, he then said, "There are cameras in the store." As if to threaten further action if I did this again. What was most embarrassing was there was another customer right next to me while this was going on. The good thing was that the other customer was smiling at me as if to say that he knew Baron was overreacting. I called the store manager on duty (Thomas) shortly after to report this behavior. I'm writing this review to ensure Baron gets this feedback.

I remembered a place on Jackson Street that I had gone to 5 years ago that had a tremendous selection - looked it up on Yelp and it was no longer on Jackson, but was listed in Castro Valley. So we went thought we'd go by and give it a try. Great decision! The "new" store in Castro Valley is much brighter, cleaner, nicer than the old location. I think the old location had more stuff from Eastern Europe, but this new location seems to have a broader selection, with more stuff from Western Europe and the Middle East. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and helpful - always willing to answer questions and even give tips on how to use the products that they sell. And his recommendations have been great - we asked him about which tahini and zaatar to get (they have many different brands/types of each...) and the ones he recommended have been way tastier than any of the brands that you find in most markets. Especially good was his recommendation on lebnah - he said that the brands they carry are all good, but they have some that they package in-house that was special. I tried it - it was less expensive than the other brands, but was the very best lebnah that I have ever tasted! Richer, creamier, with just the right amount of tang. Wonderful stuff! Anyway, Crossroads is a nice, clean, well-lit place with a great selection of unique products, and friendly, knowledgeable sales staff. Well worth a trip!

I went to pick it up on Wednesday, only to be told it wasn't ready yet. When I explained that I had already called it in on Sunday, the employee initially said she didn't see anything in the system and told me to come back the next day. After I reminded her again that I had called in, she suddenly "found" it and told me to come back in 2 hours and that I would receive a text message when it was ready. I never received the text message they promised. I returned on Friday, and once again they couldn't locate my prescription. After more searching, they finally found it -- but they also tried to give me someone else's order at the same time. I had to explain that I only had one prescription and asked them to verify it using my phone number, not just my last name. The entire experience was very unprofessional, disorganized, and frustrating. On top of that, the drive-thru wait was over 20 minutes. For something as important as prescriptions, accuracy and communication should be a priority. This pharmacy seriously needs to improve its customer service and organization.

I'm also old enough that I can say "I remember when. . . " And not sound like I'm auditioning for a part I am too young for . . . So, here goes: I remember when I lived at 12th&Taraval in SF. Just three straight uphill blocks from a Safeway. I lived in a 3rd story walk up apartment with my boyfriend and two cats, Blitzkrieg and Zippo. I would get groceries just to get paper bags sometimes to change my catliter. So these paper bags had handles and could safely hold groceries carried home often in Carl the fog or straight up rain, and THEN hold 10-15 pounds of soiled cat litter and poop down 3 flights of stairs without so much as tearing, let alone becoming completely structurally unsound. This is my grocery bag upon being picked up once. Once. You can't tell me it's not purposeful that these bags are garbage. It's bad enough Safeway gouges us on grocery prices, but to then disrespect the groceries we do but from them by making sure they drop on the floor immediately because of this shameful excuse for a paper bag. It's unreasonable. Completely unreasonable. This bag has English muffins, a piece of salmon and ladies hygiene pads. Almost no weight, and it tore upon being touched by a human. Safeway is a huge grocery chain . . . Do better.
