Earlier today we stopped at the information booth on the Riverwalk and the lady behind the counter was very clear about where and what time the fireworks will be, no smiles but she was clear about the time 9pm and location: right in front of the "battleship". Well we had dinner and were there, right in front of the battleship at 8pm waited until 9:10pm and the fireworks started about ONE mile away on the river, we could barely see it, we could hear the noise but were very dissatisfied and disappointed. We know you are a very popular Mayor but you failed big time on this 249 anniversary of our Independence. Confederate breastworks were constructed in this vicinity in 1862 to protect Wilmington from an attack from the north and for coastal defense." This is marker D-100. Online, there is more information. "A set of defensive earthworks constructed in the fall of 1862, Topsail Battery was designed to thwart an attack on Wilmington from the north down the old New Bern road (the approximate route of present US 17). A secondary purpose was to guard New Topsail Inlet and Topsail Sound, keeping them open to blockade runners. The attack from the north never materialized. However, plans were made for such an attack by Union Gen. J. G. Foster while he occupied New Bern and reinforcements of troops and artillery were sent to the site in 1864 by Confederate Gen. W. H. C. Warning: The parking lot is one way. You pull in from the north and out from the south. There's two lanes exiting so that those just dropping off letters can throw them in the posted mailbox to their left. There's always tons of parking. They always have a nice variety of stamps. And the rest is pretty standard to your average, small post office.

They changed the parking to the next street and you aren't to enter at the flags like the ticket directions told you. I took a guided tour and learned about the Foy family that had a peanut and sweet potato farm. But the more important part of the story was about the Gullah Geechee people. I had first learned about them when I was in Beaufort SC. But there is a corridor that goes from Wilmington to St. Augustine, FL to protect the Gullah Geechee culture. Poplar Grove was built by the Gullah slaves who were very skilled. 59 lived on the property. They took care of the construction; lumber milling; brick making; tending to the livestock and crops as well as domestic chores. They need to be the focus of the tour.
