The joke goes, you want your local Chinese (American) spot to be rated an average 3-star because that's how you know it's good/legit/authentic, no frills and unpretentious. Perhaps the cheap food's good but service is horrible, or some other inconsistency in the overall experience. But here I am bumping up the average because the takeout we got last week was just that good - something you wouldn't really expect walking past this dingy hole in the wall. My husband and I had been craving this for a while and it truly didn't disappoint. We got the fried chicken wings (of course), singapore mei fun, chicken lo mein and general tso's chicken. Since we spent over $40 we got a bonus 2 egg rolls for free. Every single dish hit the spot, and portions were stereotypically generous. All this food for $50 and we had enough for a second meal and then some! I guess the anomaly here was that service was just as great as the food. From taking our order over the phone to pickup, we received pleasant service. Even though we never got to try New Neighbor down the road before it shut down, I hope New HK sticks around - the neighborhood needs a local Chinese spot, especially such a solid one!! read more

Extremely disappointing experience. On a 95+° summer day, the air conditioner was unplugged, yet customers were still being seated inside without being told there was no A/C. The only relief was a fan running on the lowest setting, which did absolutely nothing. I left with my shirt soaked in sweat and was literally sticking to the wooden chair. A simple heads-up before seating customers would have been the right thing to do. Comfort and transparency should be a priority, especially in extreme heat. read more

I am fortunate to live quite close because delivery was not an issue for me. They were prompt. To satisfy my cravings, I ordered a sweet and sour pork and eggplant with garlic sauce. I feel that next to egg foo young, a sweet and sour dish would be my go-to and always with a side of eggplant. I like that they separate the sweet and sour sauce from the pork so before pouring the sauce in, you get that nice crunch from the batter that is coated on the pork. Delicious! Their eggplant with garlic sauce is written as "spicy" and I requested to make it "mild." Not sure if they actually made it mild but I was satisfied with the level of "spice." So delicious! Eggplant for me was in the right consistency that wasn't so soggy. I ordered the chicken and broccoli for my better half who also enjoyed his meal. The pricing and portions are decent. Severe decline in quality. Take-out order that we phoned in and picked up. Barbecue spare ribs very dry. Wontons heavy and thick (the noodle shell) in broth that lacks flavor. Elements of our order were screwed up. Ordered a pint of one dish, got charged for and was served a larger amount. Ordered House special chow mai fun. Got roast pork chow mai fun. The mustard in the cellophane packets is so hot that it ruins the flavor of anything that you put it on. All in all, VERY disappointing! Not too shabby in terms of take out places. I ordered a curry chicken combo with a side of cheese wontons. The wontons were thinner and had less filling than other places, but was still okay. The curry chicken was not too bad either. I wish there was more chicken in it though, most of it was just veggies and a ton of fried rice. Decided to try them out after my usual go to Chinese delivery got closed by the health department (not ordering from there again). Delivery was very prompt. The food turned out to be quite good and pleasantly surprising. Not greasy as I've come to expect from Chinese delivery. Vegetables were plentiful in my protein dishes and the ratio of protein to veggie was just to my liking. I just wish they were a bit more heavy handed with the heat for the spicy dishes, although I've come to expect spicy dishes in Chinese delivery places to be quite disappointing when it comes to heat. i placed my order today at 5:20pm my order arrived at 5:30pm : D fastest delivery, EVER!!! (granted, i live just a few blocks and around a corner away..) BUT STILL!!! 10 minutes??? that's gotta be some kind of record! : ) had to add a star for this SUPERFAST delivery! : ) got my usual sesame chicken - it's made from dark meat, which i wish could be white meat, but hey, you can't have everything you want sometimes. it's crispy crunchy on the outside, and meaty on the inside. served with beautifully crisp, perfectly steamed broccoli, and a sprinkling of sesame seeds. i was happy because the bottom of my container wasn't runny like it sometimes is (i think because they don't drain the broccoli enough after steaming it sometimes). but today i was happy because it only held a bit of the sauce from the chicken. also pleased to see that they now have fortune cookies! Really delicious Chinese place, granted my expectations were low but this place was much better than your usual fast food Chinese place. Plenty of vegetables, the large portions were super big, and the food wasn't greasy (which I don't even get from a Chinese place when I beg them to go super low on oil). Some negatives - one of the dishes I ordered was broccoli with garlic sauce and it was suppose to be spicy but it wasn't. Also I don't like overly salty but I wouldn't mind just a tad more salt in the dish. However, all the other dishes I ordered were well seasoned, salt wise. Another negative - no fortune cookies!! Kinda disappointing since my boyfriend and I like to end the meal opening a cookie each and reading the stupid funny fortunes. Otherwise, great place. Hope they keep up their quality. Let me start by saying thank you fellow yelpers for leading me here. I worked in this area for a the day and yelped it and I'm glad I did instead of using seamless. I got huge portions for cheap. And it tasted good!!! They did take a while to delivery but hey I figured they are a good local choice that is why it's busy. Probably won't ever be in this area again but if I am I know where to go if I'm looking for cheap, delicious, and satisfying chinese food. Barely decent Chinese food, the cooks in the back are very disrespect full. I went in with my girlfriend and they were in the back while we ordering. They were being extremely disrespectful and perverted. Staring at her and making gestures. The young women who took my order is very nice and kind and probably the only good thing about the restaurant. The food all taste dry and flavorless, and I never went again after they made my girlfriend so uncomfortable. Not to mention the store can attract the wrong kinds of crowd, and be very uncomfortable to eat in. After my go to Chinese spot let me down with watery won-ton soup.... twice, and the other places in or near my hood also let me down in one way or another, I decided to try someplace new. I've been avoiding going out of the area because well, having to reheat your dinner as soon as it's unpacked is kind of a big turn off. I gave New Hong Kong House a try because of it's ratings and I was not disappointed. My roast pork egg fo young was great. It tasted fresh and not like those pre-made frozen pucks that most Chines restaurants seem to be using as of late, did you know that some of these places have their fried rice trucked in from Manhattan in large bags like movie theaters do?? Anyway this place seemed spot on. The gravy for the egg fo young was just that, gravy not watery soy saucy,teriyaki like crap that seems to go with the dish nowadays, it was thick gravy and damn good gravy at that. My girlfriend got Vegetable Chow Mein and while there weren't enough snow pea pods for her, the flavor was outstanding. Needless to say, I've found a new take out spot. read more
