Craving Sichuan food, I decided to come try out Chuan Tuan Xia. I got their fish fillet in tomato, mapo tofu, and pineapple fried rice. My favorite dish was the fish fillet and I found that there was a decent portion of fish. I would say that the tomato is on the sweeter side, and I felt like it has a home cooked style taste. The food here was so good. If you're looking for something spicy, this will give you that for sure. My friends and I ordered the pork with garlic sauce, mapo tofu, and green pepper fish dishes. The pork with garlic sauce was absolutely delicious. This one isn't spicy so it didn't numb the mouth. The mapo tofu was also delicious and a little spicier but still not numbing the mouth. Def better to have it with rice though. The green pepper fish was mouth numbing and honestly I couldn't taste much of the flavor because the combination of spice and the hot temperature of the food was overbearing for me. So if you're like me and can tolerate some spicy but not numbing spicy then I would recommend telling them less spicy. A great meal with excellent service. First off, the staff is super efficient and attentive. They were slammed on a Saturday but the staff was hard at work flying around. Offered suggestions when we were ordering, constantly refilling our water, and adding dishes or removing plates to create room. They even help serve the family style entrees when it arrives. Everything was delicious from the creamy, umami silken tofu with shrimp topped with salted egg yolk. It was rich and decadent and delicate all at once. The fish fillet dry pot was huge and more than enough for 3-4 to share. The sliced cold beef dish was surprisingly refreshing compared to the heat of the hot dishes. Great casual place to stop by for spicy food. This restaurant can get really busy so make sure you make a reservation as they only have a handful of tables upstairs and downstairs. We had the Dan Dan noodles, chengdu spicy wonton, hot spicy fish, and the water cooked spicy beef. The fish was nicely fried and tossed with some vegetables. The beef was really spicy and flavorful, and the portion was nicely sized. We asked for less spicy and I was shocked by how spicy the dishes were still! The Dan Dan was standard and the wontons could have used more sauce and less chili oil. Service was great and staff were great with filling the water. Service was attentive and the staff was wonderful! However, everything that we ordered was wayyyyy too salty except the sweet and sour chicken in a pineapple. The mala pot was way saltier than I've had in other places. The cold beef and tendon dish was also on the saltier side. The cumin lamb was pretty good but hard to taste after eating the mala pot. The mapo tofu was mid. Basically, things were so salty that you had to eat a lot of rice with it or drink a lot of fluids with it. At the end you are stuffed but not in a good satisfying way. I just ordered my two favorite dishes for delivery via postmates. I opened the second dish, the chengdu dandan noodles with beef and it is all noodle no beef. I lie there is a sprinkle of ground beef. Literally less than a teaspoon on the top. I stare at it thinking no way. I move the noodles thinking maybe the beef is under the noodles. Nope! I try to complain to postmates and it won't let me properly describe the issue. AND of course the store is closed. Over several visits here, I haven't encountered a single dish that's a miss. The mao xue wang is one of the best renditions I've had in NYC. The lamb leg, chili oil wontons, beef short rib, and spicy stir fried fish fillet are all great. Service is quick, portions are large, and it's reasonably priced. This place really slaps! I'd highly recommend dining in as you get a free cold jelly dessert if you check in, and also deliciously seasoned and toasted peanuts as a free appetizer. Went back last Friday when I returned to visit my brother in Bay Ridge. Ate in person this time around and it was fantastic! Got there right at six and it was almost empty. It's a relaxing space with oddly huge tables (perhaps to lay out the feast that awaits you). Service was also really prompt and friendly too (and dishes came out really quickly). As to the food: 1. Free dish of spicy peanuts -- amazing!; 2. Cucumber honey water -- delicious and refreshing; 3. Sichuan pickles -- not too spicy but very good and a large portion; 4. Pricey, but enjoyable experience! More like a 3.5 for the overall food. Grilled Grouper: chose mild for spice and it was good enough. The fish is deep fried first before placing it in this huge tray of oil, chili peppers, bean sprouts, lotus root, noodles and kelp knots. While the fish is quite soft and cooked well, this grouper was definitely on the smaller end for the price ($53) - among three people, there was only enough for a simple tasting. I do enjoy this type of Szechuan style fish, so I would definitely get it again somewhere else, as they're also not very generous with the toppings here. I really loved the wide clear (potato?) noodles included tho yummm Chongqing Spicy Chicken: more chili peppers than chicken! The dish that killed my party as they were scooping peppercorns and chilis with their chicken as one bite. It's very mala spicy, though not initially at first. Not too fond of this at the price point of $21 either as the chicken was minimal and sadly, way too dried out. Fish Flavored Eggplant: enjoyable for the most part, but got too sweet for me towards the end. Needs some ground pork :D Chengdu Cold Noodles: free with Yelp check in! I actually really loved this, although I will say that for the "noodle" itself, there's not much texture or flavoring, as you're supposed to eat it drenched in the chili oil.
