Located at 354 Stockton Street, outside downtown Princeton, my partner and I were honored to achieve tickets for their self-guided tour of this beautiful Greek Revival mansion. The house was purchased by the State of New Jersey in the early 80s. Not all governors live here, but it is used for entertaining and other functions. Upon arrival, New Jersey State Troopers coordinated parking and entry into the mansion. Guests viewed six first-floor public rooms (the Governor's formal dining room, the sun porch, the parlor, the music and/or gathering room, the library, and the Governor's office) joyously decorated by the Garden Clubs of New Jersey using fresh arrangements and greenery that complemented the architecture and decor of each room. Enjoyed holiday piano music in the Music Room and a sweet treat freshly prepared at Greta's House. Docents were available in every room to answer questions. Interior photography was only permitted in the library before the magnificent stone fireplace. The interior was filled with history. The most fascinating part was the wallpaper in the dining room, painted by hand and beautiful. It was most definitely elaborate, ornate, shiny, and beautiful. We think there were some fascinating facts about our history and NJ, which we could recommend.

After visiting the State Museum right next door, we wandered over to the capitol building. I had called the day before to make a reservation for a tour at 2pm. They had just changed over to a brand new system of entry and everyone in the building seemed to be confused about where to send us. Entered through the annex, asked if we were in the right spot, were told yes and sent through security. We spent the next twenty minutes being shuttled around the building from one perplexed security guard to another, each one insisting we had come in the wrong door. Finally made it to the tour welcome center where we waited with a few others. Our tour guide was Pam and was excellent. Very apologetic for the odyssey we'd been through, and very friendly and knowledgeable. We got to see both the general assembly and the senate rooms, as well as the governor's inner office (though not his actual personal office). Photos were not allowed in this area and we were accompanied by a NJ State Trooper from the governor's protection detail. The whole thing was free, and we really enjoyed learning about the history of our state's capital. Would definitely recommend to others who enjoy history and politics.

Quakers first founded the settlement in the region that later became Trenton in 1679. The Quaker settlement adopted the title "Trent-towne" by 1719 in honor of William Trent who was among its leading landholders. "The Battle of Trenton" took place in the city of "Trent town" where George Washington achieved his first military victory in the course of the American Revolutionary War. In December of 1784, the Confederation congress briefly convened in Trenton. Most famously, Trenton's Capitol briefly acted as the capital of the US. Yep. It was the capital of the United States of America from November 1 to December 24, 1784 Just for that one reason alone it's worth a visit. A lot of great American history took place in this old capitol building. And it is old, it's the 6th oldest in the US. I used to live in New Jersey. I loved living in Jersey. I traveled all over Jersey, Jersey is amazing! Amazing Italian food and awesome diners. Kinda industrial but urban also. A lively lovely little mini metropolis. The US Census Bureau groups Trenton's large, central Jersey, metropolitan area with that of New York while it also borders the large Philly Metropolitan area. Today, Trenton is a super manufacturing hub/industrial area, with a bunch of bridges that cross the Delaware river. It has its own unique beauty. I loved it there. A lot of American History/Historical significance in this Capitol as "Trent town" is among the seven state capitals situated in the Piedmont Plateau. In those early days it was a very small village alongside The King's Road between the major pre-revolutionary centers of Trenton, NJ and Philadelphia. It thrived economically, providing wares and services in demand in those colonial decades, including blacksmiths, carpenters, carriage builders, wheelwrights and taverns for weary travelers. By the middle of the 20th Century, Bucks County was growing to such an extent that the historic core of this community was being threatened by outside development for homes and businesses wanting to cater to the expanding population. A group of dedicated Quakers in the area determined to protect the historic and cultural qualities of the region were able to secure financing and legislation to form the non-profit Historic Fallsington organization, which has done an excellent job preserving the original village and surrounding neighborhoods as they were from the 17th - 20th Centuries. It has become a living museum, complete with taverns, restaurants, shops and services that attract history buffs and tourists alike, who appreciate what a truly historically accurate community looked and felt like. This isn't Williamsburg, VA, that has been gussied up by the Rockefeller Foundation, but rather a much more low budget, but perhaps more authentic representation of our early American history. You are welcome to walk around town any day, and sample the goods, foods and other services still available to you. However, if you want a guided tour, they are only offered between May and October by the Historic Fallsington NGO. For those of us living nearby, this is one of the Crown Jewels of the early story of the Pennsylvania Colony and the birth of the nation. It is well worth your time.

What a wonderful treat to stop down the street and come across this grand white building…read more Traveling down this way wasn't as planned, but it gave me the chance to learn about this area! There is a historical Fallsington information Center, and it's filled with books and documentation and many historical things ! You can pick up a walking tour brochure for one dollar then take a stroll for about a mile! This area is filled with beautiful stone buildings with beautiful little gardens everything is kept up so nicely it's a treat for the eyes! I'm here now and I'm enjoying the cicada singing while looking at all the goods in this little shop and then just enjoying the local atmosphere it's so Instagram worthy! Great for a nice walk with a friend imagine yourself living here back in the old days! What a treat to enjoy these days! Next month there Will be a local event where people dress up and there will be music and other things to enjoy from local artisans. I look forward to coming back again and again I bought a wonderful book about the local history of this area. As well as some beautiful postcards of the old houses here that friends from far away might enjoy seeing this type of America! There's also a shop next-door that sells some antiques but mostly adorable little traditional items, little sets with tea bags, ($1.50, cute greeting cards, handmade/drawn cards of stone buildings, little gift sets with nice soaps and lots of little treats! The House is original, dating to roughly 1765, and housed George Washington for the week, from December 8th to the 14th, 1776, as Washington wavered between heading to Philadelphia or turning north on the offensive. When leaving he turned north, crossed the river at Washington Crossing and turned the tide of the American Revolution. The best idea of Pre-America likely happened here for Washington. The visitor center sells the tickets, has a gift shop, and quite a thorough exhibit on William Penn and his decision to found a colony and the influences behind how he ran it, including his conversion to Quakerism. The house itself has tours regularly, and our tour group was pretty big. They have evidence of the foundation and recreated his summer house based on multiple sources, and the house has a different vibe than something from the colonial area around a hundred years later. You can see a simpler and English-inspired architecture with dark wooden interiors and focus on basic metal and wooden furnishings. The tour passes through the more public rooms, the bedrooms, and the kitchen where the tour finishes. The tour guide did seem to have a particular interest in herbs that were used medicinally at the time. The overall information was interesting to learn about Penn, his family, and life at the time. On site, they also had a few reenactor tradespeople, including a joiner, two weavers, and two blacksmiths. They were all very enthusiastic about answering questions on their crafts. There is also a garden to walk through and some livestock. Between the indoor and outdoor exhibits, it was a really thorough site with different things for everyone to enjoy.

You can see vegetable gardens, a barn, a wooden boat, a kitchen, and a guy squashing apples to make cider. (Kids love that). There is also a little workshop where a guy does woodworking. Another guy was carving a log into a canoe. There is a gift shoppe which sells pencils and stuffed animals, if you can't find one at the local discount mart in your neighborhood and have a paucity of these in your bedroom. There is also a tour of the mansion. It has no lights. It is not original but recreated to perhaps be like the original. There is also a outhouse adjacent to this structure, but people are prohibited from making deposits in it.

There's some goats, and the grounds are enjoyable to take an hour or so to walk with nice historical signs for context. There is some parking but it likely gets packed in high traffic times. I can't put it in my top gardens available for Philadelphia, it's good to have treasures like these to keep the sense of history and love of horticulture the area has long held.
