The building where my mother lives had an issue for over 8 days making her life unbearable and the City Housing Authority did not respond or even returned calls. My mother is an elderly woman needing assistance and no response from Housing is disturbing. One of the Captains from this Fire House took the time to talk to me about the concern, although there was nothing he and or his Firefighters could have done without causing undue hardship to the other tenants, he took the time to listen and make useful suggestions. The men and women of FDNY should be commended for their professionalism and their genuine care for the community they serve. I regret not getting the name of the Captain, but I want to acknowledge him and his House for all they do everyday!

They had a wonderful time and talked about it for days after! The EMTS and Paramedics there are very professional and accommodated all of our students and made it a very worthwhile community trip. Thank-you Captain Bonet. This teacher truly appreciates all you and your staff do for the community at large and for our youngest residents as well.

This library is on the smaller side but it's always quiet, well kept, and clean. Typically there…read moreisn't too many patrons inside, most people seem to come here to read the newspaper or magazines. Kids come after school, there's a good space for teens and priority seats for those that are grade 6-12 by the windows looking out onto Union St. The librarians are nice and helpful. There's surprisingly a good selection of fiction, some that are often out in other branches. Some shelves have Chinese and Korean books, as well as DVDs for movies and TV shows. I love coming here from time to time, nice place to just sit and relax with a good read sometimes.

I was looking over the books displayed by the counter when the older gentleman that works there abruptly stood up, slammed his umbrella on the counter and exclaimed without looking at me but intended for me, "May I help you!" to the gales of LOUD laughter from an older female staff member. This went on for 15 minutes with him saying, "I understand if you're a teenager but you are older than me and I should be learning wisdom from you" with roars of endless LOUD hysterical, guffawing from the female. How ironic since you don't see how YOUR behavior and that of your colleague mirrors rude teenagers. A characteristic you think you see in others but not YOURSELF. Oh, the irony. If you have a problem with me discuss it with me politely instead of throwing passive aggressive insulting comments and laughing about it. You also blamed me for "causing you to have dark thoughts" (your words). Oh, no. YOU are causing YOURSELF to have dark thoughts. Don't blame that on me. Grow up.

Thankful Thursday 11/24/22 The New York City Fire…read moreDepartment, officially the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), is an American department of the government of New York City that provides fire protection, technical rescue services, primary response to biological, chemical, and radioactive hazards, and emergency medical services responses to the five boroughs of New York City. The New York City Fire Department is the largest Municipal Fire Department in the United States. In fact it's one of the largest on the planet! I'm continuously amazed at the huge responsibilities that they have twenty four hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year. It's my opinion that FDNY needs more resources considering our aging buildings. There's a lot of Fire Education needed for the general public. They are serving around 8 million NYC residents. People move in and out of the city. I let them know how much I appreciate their service every time I see them. I'm posting this review on Thanksgiving 2022 to once again say THANK YOU! I'm recommending you New Yorker's do the same!

Much better and more modern facilities than the Old York Town Police Department…read more The New York City Fire Department are pretty wonderful in many ways (except maybe on Law & Order when they get into fights with the cops due to shady goings on), and a lot more friendly than some of the other New York officials you might encounter. They've done a lot of Brave things over the years, not least on 9/11. It's too sad to talk about that, to be honest. I still don't think we have a clue who or what was behind that and I hope that someday everyone behind it will be brought to justice so all these brave people can have a little more peace, perhaps. This is a great house for a great crew, and everyone in the city should be thankful that they do what they do so well.

Im…read moregoing to come right out and say I have family and friends in the department so my viewpoint might be a bit skewed. This department is made up of volunteers who go through some very rigorous training. Which means someone is leaving thier nice _______(family dinner,cozy bed, kids ball game- you get it) to save your _________(house, loved one, car or butt). This department also provides fire safety instruction and information to the residents of the district. With a fire prevention & safety officer that goes into the schools, local businesses, church and civic groups all year long giving classes. When he comes he gives away printed material and fire helmets, and brings equipment and most times a fire engine to explore. They also have a Fire Prevention Day (date changes but is usually around the National FPday in October) that invites the community to the main firehouse for an afternoon of fun and learning with fire truck rides (you know you want to) real firehose handling, information tables, hands on demonstrations (think fire extinguishers) and actual BURNING OF STUFF (cars & mock rooms). Last bit- if the shit hits the fan or some drunk rams a car or the smoke alarm started shrieking at 2am I am so very glad that Ken or Doug or his wife Rachel or Chris or John or Peter or George or Margaret or her husband Roy or Leslie or Richie or the whole bunch of others are ready and able to come running in when everyone else is running out.

FDNY Engine Co. 53 Ladder Co. 43 East Harlem The Fire…read moreDepartment of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. The Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. Unfortunately I see them hard at work all too often in my neighborhood. Fires are common when you have old residential buildings. Restaurant fires are all to common too. Along with the NYPD these men are risking their lives daily. I'm glad to support their efforts as much as I can and appreciate seeing them in my neighborhood. This Fire Station is a safe haven for anyone in trouble. They are always on duty.

The following is based on my opinion and experience of the CITG Community House Nursery School…read moretouting themselves as a progressive school. Pros: Small Class size - Student/Teacher Ratio is high. Four teachers to about 22 kids per class. Although, I am not clear on what licenses/permits each have. After School programs and camps - I have heard good things about them and the fact that they have them is a plus for many families. Large Classrooms - large classrooms with lots of light, many books, toys, and learning/ activity centers. Great Location - Located in Forest Hills Gardens. The school also has ample outdoor play space. Excellent Enrichment - The *PA WAS fantastic at fundraising, helping to support substantial enrichment opportunities (e.g., visiting nutritionist, visiting Noguchi Museum staff, winter/end of the year show, yearbook, etc.). Great Community - My experiences with the families has been extremely positive. The Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and neighboring communities are replete with a diverse group of pretty friendly families who are very involved in their children's education. Cons: Non-progressive curriculum - If you are looking for a "progressive" curriculum that is "positive discipline" focused, then, in my opinion, you will not find much of that here. It is a problematic issue if they tout themselves as "progressive" school, which they did at the open house we attended. The school is play-based, in part, but with a lot of "structure" and "discipline" weaved in. There was a lot of prescribed art (not process based) and, overall, it's not child-centered enough. They like to say that they "borrow a little from here and a little from there" but, at its heart, it remains traditional. Punitive discipline- As in old traditional schools, they make the nursery kids line up and wait for their teachers before having them walk quietly into their respective classrooms. Kids are also separated based on gender, depending on the activity. Nursery school kids who were "disruptive" or "crying too much" or "emotionally distraught" were regularly taken out of the classroom, so as not to disturb the "learning" of the other kids. If you want to continue to tout yourself as progressive, then take a page out the DOE's mandate. Its two very helpful Early Childhood Learning Benchmarks effectively state that the learning in a nursery-school and pre-school should solely be focused on normalizing and validating kids' feelings and emotions, setting gentle limits to help kids develop a positive sense of self so that they can learn to manage their behavior positively when they are developmentally ready to. To enact a one-size-fits-all punitive approach has long been established as useless and harmful. Once we realized that our child was being regularly punished, we were only then told about their punitive behavioral management approach, which involved giving the nursery kids a "choice" to either comply or to sit alone in either a red or blue chair (deceptively called "cozy corner"). This "choice" would be given to the kids when they were unable to "get a hold of themselves," were disruptive by talking or calling out during say circle time or when they otherwise needed to "calm down." Such unreasonable expectations virtually guarantee, if not sets them up for, failure. What 3 year old do you know that can sit still or stay quiet on command? These approaches single the kid(s) out in front of all of their peers. It's a dunce cap 2.0. Such approaches can inadvertently teach kids nothing but shame and that they are "bad." It's false choice which essentially amounts to a "time out," is counter to progressive education, and it undermines nursery school kids' nascent sense of self-esteem. Leadership issues - Leadership needs to be reconsidered, and the school must give families a voice. *Dismantled PA: Unbeknownst to many, at the end of the year in which my child attended, the school just dismantled the PA. By most accounts I got wind of, parents were shocked and had zero say in that decision. Confusing Admissions Process - In my experience, admission requirments were poorly and inconsistently communicated. They do not have the same age cut-offs the DOE. Plus, you must submit a waitlist card for each program the year before to be on the waitlist to get in. Cost: I think it's expensive!
