Love training at Qi Tao. Alongside an all-ages group of welcoming students, I was able to learn the 24-move form, the 40, and the beautiful sword form. The forms are like calming, moving meditations I can settle back into whenever I'm feeling tense or anxious. Sifu is caring and attentive - she takes tai chi seriously but not herself, and she loves to crack a joke.

Sad to say, the phrase "you never get a second chance to make a first impression" rings true. I walked down the stairs hoping for a welcoming greeting and someone who could answer questions. What I recieved was an indifferent stare from a woman who pointed me towards the wall with the class schedule and information, who then went back to whatever she was reading. I walked back up the stairs and tossed the brochure in the trash at the first corner garbage can. For the sake of their other students, hopefully their customer service has improved. Or perhaps they're following the "36 Chambers of Shaolin" style of recruitment, where one has to walk across a barrel bobbing in water to be accepted.

Not a lot of tai chi teachers in NY speak English very well and it can be a pretty weird sub-culture. By contrast, Dan is really skilled, very clear, and able to teach even the more complex forms to any skill level because he is really good at breaking the moves down (and also at demonstrating them- this guy is really good at this stuff). This is definitely a more "fun" and well-rounded tai chi class than any other I've taken. In a typical class (I've been going for about 3 years now), you can expect warm-up and stretching exercises, meditation, forms, push hands, and other interesting strength and flexibility training exercises. I've been learning a sword form from Dan and it is crazy fun. He's great about working with individuals while creating a relaxed sense of community. He plays music in class sometimes. And for people who think Tai Chi isn't a work-out, you should come check this class out - it's different than your typical work out, but I always leave feeling like I had solid exercise for the day and feeling a lot more centered.

It was always my plan to study tai chi when I became too old to effectively practice karate or aikido. When that day arrived, I began to visit and practice at various tai chi studios. Sadly, there are too many poorly trained instructors teaching tai chi and a few who have little patience or ability to teach the art to older persons. Happily, I found Master Gang and plan to remain his student indefinitely. He is classically trained with a deep understanding of the art of tai chi. His teaching method is detailed and precise but he is most accommodating to the physical challenges older students can pose. Indeed, he takes particular delight in helping a student deal with an infirmity. This is a rare quality found in only the best teachers. Even with my decades of studying martial arts, he frequently blows my mind with something new I had never even considered. I am learning so much from him! I try not to be one of those students who is always challenging the reason why something is done a certain way as opposed to what I was taught in another art. But when I do ask a question, he always is pleased to explain the purpose of a movement. His positive mindset is infectious. You can't go wrong choosing Master Gang as your instructor.

It's rare to find a teacher who is so dedicated, kind, and knowledgeable about the many benefits of Tai Chi, but Dr. Huang is also patient in helping us improve our practice at our own pace. With COVID-19 and social distancing, Dr. Huang has gone to great lengths to make our online classes as valuable as before without losing either the small class size or the individual attention of face-to-face sessions. I can't say enough good things about Seeking Tai Chi. It is easily the highlight of my week.
